Total cross section for p-d breakup below 30 MeV

The total cross section for p-d breakup is studied in terms of the elastic S-matrix through the unitary condition. Calculations using the complex Kohn variational method along with the Pair Correlated Hyperspherical Harmonic basis are presented. The results have been restricted to energies below Ep=30 MeV where Coulomb effects are expected to be sizable and are compared to the existing data. Two different measurements have been found in the literature: 40 years ago, Gibbons and Macklin (1959); and 26 years ago, Carlosn et al. (1973). The calculations are found to be in reasonable agreement with these old data, though a discrepancy is observed near the deuteron breakup threshold. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the contributions to the observable from different partial waves has been presented. Unexpectedly, the main contribution for a wide range of energies has been detected in the J=3/2- state.

Photo- and Electro-Disintegration of 3He at Threshold and pd Radiative Capture

The present work reports results for: pd radiative capture observables measured at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies in the range 0--100 keV and at 2 MeV by the TUNL and Wisconsin groups, respectively; contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral in 3He from the two- up to the three-body breakup thresholds, compared to experimental determinations by the TUNL group in this threshold region; longitudinal, transverse, and interference response functions measured in inclusive polarized electron scattering off polarized 3He at excitation energies below the threshold for breakup into ppn, compared to unpolarized longitudinal and transverse data from the Saskatoon group. The calculations are based on a realistic Hamiltonian with two- and three-nucleon interactions and a realistic current operator, including one- and two-body components. The theoretical predictions obtained by including only one-body currents are in violent disagreement with data. These differences between theory and experiment are, to a large extent, removed when two-body currents are taken into account, although some rather large discrepancies remain in the c.m. energy range 0--100 keV, particularly for the pd differential cross section and tensor analyzing power at small angles, and contributions to the GDH integral. A rather detailed analysis indicates that these discrepancies have, in large part, a common origin, and can be traced back to an excess strength obtained in the theoretical calculation of the E1 reduced matrix element associated with the pd channel having L,S,J=1,1/2,3/2. It is suggested that this lack of E1 strength observed experimentally might have implications for the nuclear interaction at very low energies. Finally, the validity of the long-wavelength approximation for electric dipole transitions is discussed.

proton-deuteron elastic scattering above the deuteron breakup

The complex Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) hyperspherical harmonics method are applied to study the proton-deuteron elastic scattering at energies above the deuteron breakup threshold. Results for the elastic cross section and various elastic polarization observables have been obtained by fully taking into account the long-range effect of the Coulomb interaction and using a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction model. Detailed comparison between the theoretical predictions and the accurate and abundant proton-deuteron experimental data can now be performed.

Weak capture of protons by protons

The cross section for the proton weak capture reaction $^1H(p,e^+ν_e)^2H$ is calculated with wave functions obtained from a number of modern, realistic high-precision interactions. To minimize the uncertainty in the axial two-body current operator, its matrix element has been adjusted to reproduce the measured Gamow-Teller matrix element of tritium $β$ decay in model calculations using trinucleon wave functions from these interactions. A thorough analysis of the ambiguities that this procedure introduces in evaluating the two-body current contribution to the pp capture is given. Its inherent model dependence is in fact found to be very weak. The overlap integral $Λ^2(E=0)$ for the pp capture is predicted to be in the range 7.05--7.06, including the axial two-body current contribution, for all interactions considered.

Benchmark calculations for polarization observables in 3N scattering

High precision benchmark calculations for phase-shifts and mixing parameters as well as observables in elastic neutron-deuteron scattering below the deuteron breakup threshold are presented using a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential. Two totally different methods, one using a variational principle in configuration space and the other solving the Faddeev equations in momentum space are used and compared to each other. The agreement achieved in phase-shifts and mixing parameters as well as in the polarization observables is excellent. The extreme sensitivity of the vector analyzing power Ay to small changes of the phase shifts and mixing parameters is pointed out.

Neutron-3H and Proton-3He Zero Energy Scattering

The Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) Hyperspherical Harmonics technique are applied to study the n-3H and p-3He scattering at zero energy. Predictions for the singlet and triplet scattering lengths are obtained for non-relativistic nuclear Hamiltonians including two- and three-body potentials. The calculated n-3H total cross section agrees well with the measured value, while some small discrepancy is found for the coherent scattering length. For the p-3He channel, the calculated scattering lengths are in reasonable agreement with the values extrapolated from the measurements made above 1 MeV.

Possible three-nucleon force effects in D-P scattering at low energies

We present measurements of the analyzing powers Ay and iT11 for proton-deuteron scattering at Ecm=432 keV. Calculations using a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential (Argonne V18) are found to underpredict both analyzing powers by 40. The inclusion of the Urbana three-nucleon interaction does not significantly modify the calculated analyzing powers. Due to its short range, it is difficult for this three-nucleon interaction to affect Ay and iT11 at this low energy. The origin of the discrepancy remains an open question.

The Three-Nucleon System Near the N-d Threshold

The three-nucleon system is studied at energies a few hundred keV above the N-d threshold. Measurements of the tensor analyzing powers $T_{20}$ and $T_{21}$ for p-d elastic scattering at $E_{c.m.}=432$ keV are presented together with the corresponding theoretical predictions. The calculations are extended to very low energies since they are useful for extracting the p-d scattering lengths from the experimental data. The interaction considered here is the Argonne V18 potential plus the Urbana three-nucleon potential. The calculation of the asymptotic D- to S-state ratio for $^3$H and $^3$He, for which recent experimental results are available, is also presented.

Study of bound and scattering states in three-nucleon systems

A variational technique to describe the ground and scattering states below the break-up threshold for a three-nucleon system is developed. The method consists in expanding the wave function in terms of correlated Harmonic Hyperspherical functions suitable to handle the large repulsion contained in the nuclear potential at short distances; three body forces have also been considered. The inclusion of the pp Coulomb repulsion in the p-d processes does not cause any particular problem, since no partial wave decomposition of the interaction is performed. Accurate numerical results are given for ground state properties and scattering lenghts, phase shifts and mixing parameters at three different energies of the incident nucleon. The agreement with other available results and with experimental analyses is higlly satisfactory.

N-d scattering above the deuteron breakup threshold

The complex Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) Hyperspherical Harmonics technique are applied to study the N--d scattering above the deuteron breakup threshold. The configuration with three outgoing nucleons is explicitly taken into account by solving a set of differential equations with outgoing boundary conditions. A convenient procedure is used to obtain the correct boundary conditions at values of the hyperradius $\approx 100$ fm. The inclusion of the Coulomb potential is straightforward and does not give additional difficulties. Numerical results have been obtained for a simple s-wave central potential. They are in nice agreement with the benchmarks produced by different groups using the Faddeev technique. Comparisons are also done with experimental elastic N--d cross section at several energies.

Neutron electromagnetic form factors and inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized $^{3}$He and $^{3}$H targets

The electromagnetic inclusive responses of polarized $^{3}$He and $^{3}$H are thoroughly investigated at the quasielastic peak for squared momentum transfers up to $2 (GeV/c)^2$, within the plane wave impulse approximation. Great emphasys is put on the effects in the bound-state due to different two- and three-body nuclear forces, and to the Coulomb interaction as well. A careful analysis of the polarized responses allows to select possible experiments for minimizing the model dependence in the extraction of the neutron electromagnetic form factors. In particular, the relevant role played by the proton in the transverse-longitudinal response of polarized $^{3}$He, at low momentum transfer, can be utilized for obtaining valuable information on the proton contribution to the total polarized response and eventually on the neutron charge form factor.
