Temperature driven crossover phenomena in the correlation lengths of the one-dimensional t-J model

We describe a modified transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) algorithm and apply it to calculate thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional t-J model. At the supersymmetric point we compare with Bethe ansatz results and make direct connection to conformal field theory (CFT). In particular we study the crossover from the non-universal high T lattice into the quantum critical regime by calculating various correlation lengths and static correlation functions. Finally, the existence of a spin-gap phase is confirmed.

Ground-state properties of two-dimensional dimerized Heisenberg models

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the ground-state properties of two-dimensional Heisenberg models on a square lattice with a given dimerization. Our aim is threefold: First, we want to investigate the dimensional transition from two to one dimension for three models consisting of weakly coupled chains for large dimerizations. Simple scaling arguments show that the interchain coupling is always relevant. The ground states of two of these models therefore have one-dimensional nature only at the decoupling point. The third considered model is more complicated, because it contains additional relevant intrachain couplings leading to a gap as shown by scaling arguments and numerical investigations. Second, we investigate at which point the dimerization destroys the Néel ordered ground state of the isotropic model. Within a mapping to a nonlinear sigma-model and linear spinwave theory (LSWT) we conclude that the stability of the Néel ordered state depends on the microscopic details of the model. Third, the considered models also can be regarded as effective models for a spin system with spin-phonon coupling. This leads to the question if a spin-Peierls transition, i.e. a gain of total energy due to lattice distortion, is possible. LSWT shows that such a transition is possible under certain conditions leading to a coexistence of long-range order and spin-Peierls dimerization. We also find that the gain of magnetic energy is largest for a stair-like distortion of the lattice.

The 1/2-XXZ spin-chain at finite magnetic field: Crossover phenomena driven by temperature

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of spin-spin correlation functions for the integrable Heisenberg chain. To this end we use the Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM) technique developed in \cite{AK} which results in a set of non-linear integral equations (NLIE). In the case of the largest eigenvalue the solution to these equations yields the free energy and by modifications of the paths of integration the next-leading eigenvalues and hence the correlation lengths are obtained. At finite field $h>0$ and sufficiently high temperature $T$ the next-leading eigenvalue is unique and given by a 1-string solution to the QTM taking real and negative values thus resulting into exponentially decaying correlations with antiferromagnetic oscillations. At sufficiently low temperatures a different behaviour sets in where the next-leading eigenvalues of QTM are given by a complex conjugate pair of eigenvalues resulting into incommensurate oscillations. The above scenario is the result of analytical and numerical investigations of the QTM establishing a well defined crossover temperature $T_c(h)$ at which the 1-string eigenvalue to the QTM gets degenerate with the 2-string solution. Among other things we find a simple particle-hole picture for the excitations of the QTM and we make contact with the dressed charge formulation of CFT.

Thermodynamics of Spin S = 1/2 Antiferromagnetic Uniform and Alternating-Exchange Heisenberg Chains

The magnetic susceptibility chi and specific heat C versus temperature T of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1 and J2) Heisenberg chain are studied for the entire range 0 \leq alpha \leq 1 of the alternation parameter alpha = J2/J1. For the uniform chain (alpha = 1), detailed comparisons of the high-accuracy chi(T) and C(T) Bethe ansatz data of Kluemper and Johnston are made with the asymptotically exact low-T field theory predictions of Lukyanov. QMC simulations and TMRG calculations of chi(alpha,T) are presented. From the low-T TMRG data, the spin gap Delta(alpha)/J1 is extracted for 0.8 \leq alpha \leq 0.995. High accuracy fits to all of the above numerical data are obtained. We examine in detail the theoretical predictions of Bulaevskii for chi(alpha,T) and compare them with our results. Our experimental chi(T) and C(T) data for NaV2O5 single crystals are modeled in detail. The chi(T) data above the spin dimerization temperature Tc = 34 K are not in agreement with the prediction for the uniform Heisenberg chain, but can be explained if there is a moderate ferromagnetic interchain coupling and/or if J changes with T. By fitting the chi(T) data, we obtain Delta(T = 0) = 103(2) K, alternation parameter delta(0) = (1 - alpha)/(1 + alpha) = 0.034(6) and average exchange constant J(0) = 640(80) K. The delta(T) and Delta(T) are derived from the data. A spin pseudogap with a large magnitude \approx 0.4 Delta(0) is consistently found just above Tc, which decreases with increasing T. Analysis of our C(T) data indicates that at Tc, at least 77% of the entropy change due to the transition at Tc and associated order parameter fluctuations arise from the lattice and/or charge degrees of freedom and less than 23% from the spin degrees of freedom.

Thermodynamics of the Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Uniform Heisenberg Chain

We present a new application of the traditional thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic uniform Heisenberg chain and derive exact nonlinear integral equations for just {\em two} functions describing the elementary excitations. Using this approach the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and specific heat C versus temperature T are calculated to high accuracy for $5\times10^{-25}\leq T/J\leq 5$. The $χ(T)$ data agree very well at low T with the asymptotically exact theoretical low-T prediction of S. Lukyanov, Nucl. Phys. B {\bf 522}, 533 (1998). The unknown coefficients of the second and third lowest-order logarithmic correction terms in Lukyanov's theory for C(T) are estimated from the C(T) data.

Pressure dependence and non-universal effects of microscopic couplings on the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO_3

The theory by Cross and Fisher (CF) is by now commonly accepted for the description of the spin-Peierls transition within an adiabatic approach. The dimerization susceptibility as the essential quantity, however, is approximated by means of a continuum description. Several important experimental observations can not be understood within this scope. Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques we are able to treat the spin system exactly up to numerical inaccuracies. Thus we find the correct dependence of the equation of state on the spin-spin interaction constant J, still in an adiabatic approach. We focus on the pressure dependence of the critical temperature which is absent in the CF theory as the only energy scale with considerable pressure dependence is J which drops out completely. Comparing the theoretical findings to the experimentally measured pressure dependence of the spin-Peierls temperature we obtain information on the variation of the frustration parameter with pressure. Furthermore, the ratio of the spectral gap and the transition temperature is analyzed.

Thermodynamics and excitations of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We review fundamental issues arising in the exact solution of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We perform a careful analysis of the Lieb-Wu equations, paying particular attention to so-called `string solutions'. Two kinds of string solutions occur: $Λ$ strings, related to spin degrees of freedom and $k-Λ$ strings, describing spinless bound states of electrons. Whereas $Λ$ strings were thoroughly studied in the literature, less is known about $k-Λ$ strings. We carry out a thorough analytical and numerical analysis of $k-Λ$ strings. We further review two different approaches to the thermodynamics of the Hubbard model, the Yang-Yang approach and the quantum transfer matrix approach, respectively. The Yang-Yang approach is based on strings, the quantum transfer matrix approach is not. We compare the results of both methods and show that they agree. Finally, we obtain the dispersion curves of all elementary excitations at zero magnetic field for the less than half-filled band by considering the zero temperature limit of the Yang-Yang approach.

Exact Thermodynamics of Disordered Impurities in Quantum Spin Chains

Exact results for the thermodynamic properties of ensembles of magnetic impurities with randomly distributed host-impurity couplings in the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model are presented. Exact calculations are done for arbitrary values of temperature and external magnetic field. We have shown that for strong disorder the quenching of the impurity moments is absent. For weak disorder the screening persists, but with the critical non-Fermi-liquid behaviors of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. A comparison with the disordered Kondo effect experiments in dirty metallic alloys is performed.

Competition of Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Order in the Spin-1/2 XXZ Chain at Finite Temperature

An analytical study is presented of the crossover in the gapless attractive XXZ chain from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behaviour at low to high temperature, respectively. In particular, an analytic formula for the crossover in the long distance asymptotics and explicit results for the nearest-neighbour longitudinal correlation are obtained. We also provide results for the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility for various anisotropies.

Finite Temperature DMRG Investigation of the Spin-Peierls Transition in CuGeO$_3$

We present a numerical study of thermodynamical properties of dimerized frustrated Heisenberg chains down to extremely low temperatures with applications to CuGeO$_3$. A variant of the finite temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) allows the study of the dimerized phase previously unaccessible to ab initio calculations. We investigate static dimerized systems as well as the instability of the quantum chain towards lattice dimerization. The crossover from a quadratic response in the free energy to the distortion field at finite temperature to nonanalytic behavior at zero temperature is studied quantitatively. Various physical quantities are derived and compared with experimental data for CuGeO$_3$ such as magnetic dimerization, critical temperature, susceptibility and entropy.

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain: thermodynamics, quantum criticality and spin-Peierls exponents

We present numerical and analytical results for the thermodynamical properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at arbitrary external magnetic field. Special emphasis is placed on logarithmic corrections in the susceptibility and specific heat at very low temperatures ($T/J=10^{-24}$) and small fields. A longstanding controversy about the specific heat is resolved. At zero temperature the spin-Peierls exponent is calculated in dependence on the external magnetic field. This describes the energy response of the system to commensurate and incommensurate modulations of the lattice. The exponent for the spin gap in the incommensurate phase is given.

Quantum phase transition in spin-3/2 systems on the hexagonal lattice - optimum ground state approach

Optimum ground states are constructed in two dimensions by using so called vertex state models. These models are graphical generalizations of the well-known matrix product ground states for spin chains. On the hexagonal lattice we obtain a one-parametric set of ground states for a five-dimensional manifold of S=3/2 Hamiltonians. Correlation functions within these ground states are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations. In contrast to the one-dimensional situation, these states exhibit a parameter-induced second order phase transition. In the disordered phase, two-spin correlations decay exponentially, but in the Neel ordered phase alternating long-range correlations are dominant. We also show that ground state properties can be obtained from the exact solution of a corresponding free-fermion model for most values of the parameter.

Reexamination of the microscopic couplings of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet CuGeO_3

Experimental data for the magnetic susceptibility and magnetostriction of CuGeO_3 are analyzed within a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic model with nearest ({J_1}) and next-nearest neighbour interactions ({J_2}). We show that the ratio of the exchange constants in the antiferromagnetic chains of CuGeO_3 amounts to ${J_2}/{J_1}$ = 0.354(0.01), i.e. it is significantly larger than the critical value for the formation of a spontaneous gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum without lattice dimerization. The susceptibility data are reproduced by our numerical results over the temperature range from 20K to 950K to a high degree of accuracy for ${J_1} = 80.2 (3.0)$ and ${J_2} = 28.4 (1.8)$. The pressure dependence of the exchange constants is estimated from magnetostriction data. Furthermore, the specific heat data are checked on consistency against the calculated entropy of the above model.

A new integrable two parameter model of strongly correlated electrons in one dimension

A new one-dimensional fermion model depending on two independent interaction parameters is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe ansatz method. The Hamiltonian of the model contains the Hubbard interaction and correlated hopping as well as pair hopping terms. The density-density and pair correlations are calculated which manifest superconducting properties in certain regimes of the phase diagram.

Exact solution of new integrable nineteen-vertex models and quantum spin-1 chains

New exactly solvable nineteen vertex models and related quantum spin-1 chains are solved. Partition functions, excitation energies, correlation lengths, and critical exponents are calculated. It is argued that one of the non-critical Hamiltonians is a realization of an integrable Haldane system. The finite-size spectra of the critical Hamiltonians deviate in their structure from standard predictions by conformal invariance.

Critical exponents of a multicomponent anisotropic t-J model in one dimension

A recently presented anisotropic generalization of the multicomponent supersymmetric $t-J$ model in one dimension is investigated. This model of fermions with general spin-$S$ is solved by Bethe ansatz for the ground state and the low-lying excitations. Due to the anisotropy of the interaction the model possesses $2S$ massive modes and one single gapless excitation. The physical properties indicate the existence of Cooper-type multiplets of $2S+1$ fermions with finite binding energy. The critical behaviour is described by a $c=1$ conformal field theory with continuously varying exponents depending on the particle density. There are two distinct regimes of the phase diagram with dominating density-density and multiplet-multiplet correlations, respectively. The effective mass of the charge carriers is calculated. In comparison to the limit of isotropic interactions the mass is strongly enhanced in general.

Exact solution of a one-dimensional fermion model with interchain tunneling

A fermion model consisting of two chains with interchain tunneling is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe ansatz method. The interchain tunneling leads to Cooper pair like bound states and a threshold energy is required to overcome the binding energy. The correlation functions manifest superconducting properties.
