Parsing Squeezed Light into Polarization Manifolds

We investigate polarization squeezing in squeezed coherent states with varying coherent amplitudes. In contrast to the traditional characterization based on the full Stokes parameters, we experimentally determine the Stokes vector of each excitation manifold separately. Only for states with a fixed photon number do the methods coincide; when the photon number is indefinite, our approach gives a richer and deeper description. By capitalising on the properties of the Husimi Q function, we map this notion onto the Poincare space, providing a full account of the measured squeezing.

Acoustic search for high-energy neutrinos in Lake Baikal: status and perspectives

We report theoretical and experimental results of on-going feasibility studies to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in Lake Baikal. In order to examine ambient noise conditions and to develop respective pulse detection techniques a prototype device was created. The device is operating at a depth of 150 m at the site of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope and is capable to detect and classify acoustic signals with different shapes, as well as signals from neutrino-induced showers.

Asymmetrical two-atom entanglement in a coated microsphere

We study evolution of entanglement of two two-level atoms placed inside a multilayered microsphere. We show that due to inhomogeneity of the field modes this entanglement essentially depends on the atomic positions (asymmetrical entanglement) and also on the detuning between the atomic transitions and field frequencies. The robust and complete entanglement can be achieved even in the resonant case when the atoms have different effective coupling constants, and it can be extended in time if the detuning is large enough. We study analytically the lossless case and estimate numerically the effect of dissipative processes.

Measurement driven quantum evolution

We study the problem of mapping an unknown mixed quantum state onto a known pure state without the use of unitary transformations. This is achieved with the help of sequential measurements of two non-commuting observables only. We show that the overall success probability is maximized in the case of measuring two observables whose eigenstates define mutually unbiased bases. We find that for this optimal case the success probability quickly converges to unity as the number of measurement processes increases and that it is almost independent of the initial state. In particular, we show that to guarantee a success probability close to one the number of consecutive measurements must be larger than the dimension of the Hilbert space. We connect these results to quantum copying, quantum deleting and entanglement generation.

Anomalous acoustoelectric effect in La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} films

We have studied acoustoelectric (AE) effect produced by surface acoustic waves (SAW) in a monolithic layered structure, composed of piezodielectric LiNbO_{3} substrate and La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film. The experiments unexpectedly revealed in the longitudinal AE effect an anomalous contribution, invariant upon reversal of SAW propagation, which coexists with the ordinary (odd in wave vector) effect. The anomalous effect dominates near the metal-insulator transition, while the ordinary effect prevails at high and low temperatures. We show that the anomalous effect is caused by strong modulation of the film conductivity produced by the SAW elastic deformations.
