A new route for enantio-sensitive structure determination by photoelectron scattering on molecules in the gas phase

X-ray as well as electron diffraction are powerful tools for structure determination of molecules. Studies on randomly oriented molecules in the gas-phase address cases in which molecular crystals cannot be generated or the interaction-free molecular structure is to be addressed. Such studies usually yield partial geometrical information, such as interatomic distances. Here, we present a complementary approach, which allows obtaining insight to the structure, handedness and even detailed geometrical features of molecules in the gas phase. Our approach combines Coulomb explosion imaging, the information that is encoded in the molecular frame diffraction pattern of core-shell photoelectrons and ab initio computations. Using a loop-like analysis scheme we are able to deduce specific molecular coordinates with sensitivity even to the handedness of chiral molecules and the positions of individual atoms, as, e.g., protons.

Fourfold Differential Photoelectron Circular Dichroism

We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) in methyloxirane. By detecting O 1s-photoelectrons in coincidence with fragment ions, we deduce the molecule's orientation and photoelectron emission direction in the laboratory frame. Thereby, we retrieve a fourfold differential PECD clearly beyond 50%. This strong chiral asymmetry is reproduced by ab initio electronic structure calculations. Providing such a pronounced contrast makes PECD of fixed-in-space chiral molecules an even more sensitive tool for chiral recognition in the gas phase.

Photoelectron circular dichroism of O 1$s$-photoelectrons of uniaxially oriented trifluoromethyloxirane: Energy dependence and sensitivity to molecular configuration

The photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) of the O 1s-photoelectrons of trifluoromethyloxirane(TFMOx) is studied experimentally and theoretically for different photoelectron kinetic energies. The experiments were performed employing circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and coincidentelectron and fragment ion detection using Cold Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy. The corresponding calculations were performed by means of the Single Center method within the relaxed-core Hartree-Fock approximation. We concentrate on the energy dependence of the differential PECD of uniaxially oriented TFMOx molecules, which is accessible through the employed coincident detection. We also compare results for differential PECD of TFMOx to those obtained for the equivalent fragmentation channel and similar photoelectron kinetic energy of methyloxirane (MOx), studied in our previous work. Thereby, we investigate the influence of the substitution of the methyl-group by the trifluoromethyl-group at the chiral center on the molecular chiral response. Finally, the presently obtained angular distribution parameters are compared to those available in literature.

Many-electron character of two-photon above-threshold ionization of Ar

The absolute generalized cross sections and angular distribution parameters of photoelectrons for the two-photon above threshold $3p$-ionization of Ar were calculated in the exciting photon energy range from 15.76 to 36 eV. The correlation function technique developed earlier was extended for the case when an intermediate-state function is of a continuum-type. We show that two-photon ionization of Ar near the $3p^{4}$ threshold to a large extent is determined by the $(3p\dashrightarrow\varepsilon d)^{2}$ two-photon absorption via the giant resonance. This many-electron correlation causes (i) an increase of the photoionization cross sections by more than a factor of 3; (ii) the appearance of resonances in the exciting-photon energy range of the doubly-excited states. The predictions are supported by a good agreement between length and velocity results obtained after taking into account of the higher-order perturbation theory corrections.

Rearrangement of electron shells and interchannel interaction in the K photoabsorption of Ne

A detailed theoretical analysis of the 1s photoionization of neon is presented. It is found that the most significant many-electron correlation in computing photoionization of inner shells is the rearrangement of the outer shells caused by the inner vacancy. Further noticeable effects are: (i) the polarization of the ion core by the outgoing photoelectron and (ii) the coherent effect of double excitation/ionization. The core polarization increases the photoionization cross section by about 10% at the 1s threshold, and the coherent excitation results in further increases by about 5%. Incoherent excitation of the satellite channel leads to an additional 10% increase in the photoabsorption cross section in the double-ionization threshold region.

Recovery of high-energy photoelectron circular dichroism through Fano interference

It is commonly accepted that the magnitude of a photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is governed by the ability of an outgoing photoelectron wave packet to probe the chiral asymmetry of a molecule. To be able to accumulate this characteristic asymmetry while escaping the chiral ion, photoelectrons need to have relatively small kinetic energies of up to a few tens of electron volts. Here, we demonstrate a substantial PECD for very fast photoelectrons above 500 eV kinetic energy released from methyloxirane by a participator resonant Auger decay of its lowermost O $1s$-excitation. This effect emerges as a result of the Fano interference between the direct and resonant photoionization pathways, notwithstanding that their individual effects are negligibly small. The resulting dichroic parameter has an anomalous dispersion, i.e. it changes its sign across the resonance, which can be considered as an analogue of the Cotton effect in the X-ray regime.

Set-up for multi coincidence experiments of EUV to VIS photons and charged particles -- the solid angle maximization approach

The coincident detection of particles is a powerful method in experimental physics, enabling the investigation of a variety of projectile-target interactions. The vast majority of coincidence experiments is performed with charged particles, as they can be guided by electric or magnetic fields to yield large detection probabilities. When a neutral species or a photon is one of the particles recorded in coincidence, its detection probability typically suffers from small solid angles. Here, we present two optical assemblies considerably enhancing the solid angle for EUV to VIS photon detection. The efficiency and versatility of these assemblies is demonstrated for electron-photon coincidence detection, where electrons and photons emerge from fundamental processes after photoexcitation of gaseous samples by synchrotron radiation.

Emitter-site selective photoelectron circular dichroism of trifluoromethyloxirane

The angle-resolved inner-shell photoionization of R-trifluoromethyloxirane, C3H3F3O, is studied experimentally and theoretically. Thereby, we investigate the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) for nearly-symmetric O 1s and F 1s electronic orbitals, which are localized on different molecular sites. The respective dichroic $β_{1}$ and angular distribution $β_{2}$ parameters are measured at the photoelectron kinetic energies from 1 to 16 eV by using variably polarized synchrotron radiation and velocity map imaging spectroscopy. The present experimental results are in good agreement with the outcome of ab initio electronic structure calculations. We report a sizable chiral asymmetry $β_{1}$ of up to about 9% for the K-shell photoionization of oxygen atom. For the individual fluorine atoms, the present calculations predict asymmetries of similar size. However, being averaged over all fluorine atoms, it drops down to about 2%, as also observed in the present experiment. Our study demonstrates a strong emitter- and site-sensitivity of PECD in the one-photon inner-shell ionization of this chiral molecule.

Machine learning applied to single-shot x-ray diagnostics in an XFEL

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the only sources currently able to produce bright few-fs pulses with tunable photon energies from 100 eV to more than 10 keV. Due to the stochastic SASE operating principles and other technical issues the output pulses are subject to large fluctuations, making it necessary to characterize the x-ray pulses on every shot for data sorting purposes. We present a technique that applies machine learning tools to predict x-ray pulse properties using simple electron beam and x-ray parameters as input. Using this technique at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), we report mean errors below 0.3 eV for the prediction of the photon energy at 530 eV and below 1.6 fs for the prediction of the delay between two x-ray pulses. We also demonstrate spectral shape prediction with a mean agreement of 97%. This approach could potentially be used at the next generation of high-repetition-rate XFELs to provide accurate knowledge of complex x-ray pulses at the full repetition rate.

VUV Spectroscopic Study of the D^1ΠState of Molecular Deuterium

The D^1Π_u - X^1Σ_g^+ absorption system of molecular deuterium has been re-investigated using the VUV Fourier -Transform (FT) spectrometer at the DESIRS beamline of the synchrotron SOLEIL and photon-induced fluorescence spectrometry (PIFS) using the 10 m normal incidence monochromator at the synchrotron BESSY II. Using the FT spectrometer absorption spectra in the range 72 - 82 nm were recorded in quasi static gas at 100 K and in a free flowing jet at a spectroscopic resolution of 0.50 and 0.20 cm^{-1} respectively . The narrow Q-branch transitions, probing states of Π^- symmetry, were observed up to vibrational level v = 22. The states of Π^+ symmetry, known to be broadened due to predissociation and giving rise to asymmetric Beutler-Fano resonances, were studied up to v = 18. The 10 m normal incidence beamline setup at BESSY II was used to simultaneously record absorption, dissociation, ionization and fluorescence decay channels from which information on the line intensities, predissociated widths, and Fano q-parameters were extracted. R-branch transitions were observed up to v = 23 for J = 1-3 as well as several transitions for J = 4 and 5 up to v = 22 and 18 respectively. The Q-branch transitions are found to weakly predissociate and were observed from v = 8 to the final vibrational level of the state v = 23. The spectroscopic study is supported by two theoretical frameworks. Results on the Π^- symmetry states are compared to ab initio multi-channel-quantum defect theory (MQDT) calculations, demonstrating that these calculations are accurate to within 0.5 cm^-1.
