Chaotic spin-dependent electron dynamics in a field-driven double dot potential

We study the nonlinear classical dynamics of an electron confined in a double dot potential and subjected to a spin-orbit coupling and a constant external magnetic field. It is shown that due to the spin orbit coupling, the energy can be transferred from the spin to the orbital motion. This naturally heats up the orbital motion which, due to the presence of the separatrix line in the phase space of the system, results in a motion of the electron between the dots. It is shown that depending on the strength of the spin orbit coupling and the energy of the system, the electronic orbital motion undergoes a transition from the regular to the chaotic regime.

Spin-orbital phase synchronization in the magnetic field-driven electron dynamics in a double quantum dot

We study the dynamics of an electron confined in a one-dimensional double quantum dot in the presence of driving external magnetic fields. The orbital motion of the electron is coupled to the spin dynamics by spin orbit interaction of the Dresselhaus type. We derive an effective time-dependent Hamiltonian model for the orbital motion of the electron and obtain a synchronization condition between the orbital and the spin dynamics. From this model we deduce an analytical expression for the Arnold tongue and propose an experimental scheme for realizing the synchronization of the orbital and spin dynamics.

Hamiltonian approach to the charge transfer statistics of Kondo quantum dots contacted by a normal metal and a superconductor

We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of quantum dots in the Kondo regime contacted by normal and superconducting leads or an STM tip. To describe the Kondo resonance we use an effective model for the quantum dot in the Kondo regime in combination with the FCS for tunneling contacts calculated using the Hamiltonian approach. We show that the situation of weak coupling to the superconducting electrode in the case of superconductor gap being larger than the Kondo resonance width can be easily handled and verify the method by comparing our theoretical predictions to experimental data. This allows us to make predictions for the noise and cross-correlation in setups involving a superconductor. We find that a positive cross-correlation is possible in the case of a superconductor and two normal leads contacted via two quantum dots in the Kondo regime.

Quantum fluctuation theorem in an interacting setup: point contacts in fractional quantum Hall edge state devices

We verify the validity of the Cohen-Gallavotti fluctuation theorem for the strongly correlated problem of charge transfer through an impurity in a chiral Luttinger liquid, which is realizable experimentally as a quantum point contact in a fractional quantum Hall edge state device. This is accomplished via the development of an analytical method to calculate the full counting statistics (FCS) of the problem in all the parameter regimes involving the temperature, the Hall voltage, and the gate voltage.

Nonlinear dynamics of two coupled nano-electromechanical resonators

As a model of coupled nano-electromechanical resonantors we study two nonlinear driven oscillators with an arbitrary coupling strength between them. Analytical expressions are derived for the oscillation amplitudes as a function of the driving frequency and for the energy transfer rate between the two oscillators. The nonlinear restoring forces induce the expected nonlinear resonance structures in the amplitude-frequency characteristics with asymmetric resonance peaks. The corresponding multistable behavior is shown to be an efficient tool to control the energy transfer arising from the sensitive response to small changes in the driving frequency. Our results imply that the nonlinear response can be exploited to design precise sensors for mass or force detection experiments based on nano-electromechanical resonators.

Chaotic dynamics and spin correlation functions in a chain of nanomagnets

We study a chain of coupled nanomagnets in a classical approximation. We show that the infinitely long chain of coupled nanomagnets can be equivalently mapped onto an effective one-dimensional Hamiltonian with a fictitious time-dependent perturbation. We establish a connection between the dynamical characteristics of the classical system and spin correlation time. The decay rate for the spin correlation functions turns out to depend logarithmically on the maximal Lyapunov exponent. Furthermore, we discuss the non-trivial role of the exchange anisotropy within the chain.

Transport properties of a molecular quantum dot coupled to one-dimensional correlated electrons

We analyze the transport properties of a quantum dot with a harmonic degree of freedom (Holstein phonon) coupled to interacting one-dimensional metallic leads. Using Tomonaga-Luttinger model to describe the interacting leads we construct the generating function of the full counting statistics (FCS) for a specific constellation of system parameters and give explicit expression for the cumulant generating function. In the resonant case we find the lowest order correction to the current to be negative and divergent when source-drain voltage approaches the phonon frequency. Via a diagram resummation procedure we show, that this divergencies can be repealed. On the contrary, in the off-resonant case the lowest order correction remains finite. This effect can be traced back to the strongly non-monotonic behaviour of the bare transmission coefficient (without phonon) with respect to the dot level energy. We calculate corrections to the noise power as well and discuss possible experimental implications of this phenomenon.

Anderson impurity model in nonequilibrium: analytical results versus quantum Monte Carlo data

We analyze the spectral function of the single-impurity two-terminal Anderson model at finite voltage using the recently developed diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo technique as well as perturbation theory. In the (particle-hole-)symmetric case we find an excellent agreement of the numerical data with the perturbative results of second order up to interaction strengths $U/Γ\approx 2$, where $Γ$ is the transparency of the impurity-electrode interface. The analytical results are obtained in form of the nonequilibrium self-energy for which we present explicit formulas in the closed form at arbitrary bias voltage. We observe an increase of the spectral density around zero energy brought about by the Kondo effect. Our analysis suggests that a finite applied voltage $V$ acts as an effective temperature of the system. We conclude that at voltages significantly larger than the equilibrium Kondo temperature there is a complete suppression of the Kondo effect and no resonance splitting can be observed. We confirm this scenario by comparison of the numerical data with the perturbative results.

Charge transfer statistics and entanglement in normal-quantum dot-superconductor hybrid structures

We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of a single-site quantum dot coupled to multiple metallic electrodes in the normal state and a superconductor for arbitrary transmission. We present an analytical solution of the problem taking into account the full energy dependence of the transmission coefficient. We identify two transport processes as sources of entanglement between the current carriers by observing positive cross current correlations. Furthermore, we consider ferromagnetic electrodes and show how they can be used as detectors in experiments violating the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Charge transfer statistics of a molecular quantum dot with strong electron-phonon interaction

We analyze the nonequilibrium transport properties of a quantum dot with a harmonic degree of freedom (Holstein phonon) coupled to metallic leads, and derive its full counting statistics (FCS). Using the Lang-Firsov (polaron) transformation, we construct a diagrammatic scheme to calculate the cumulant generating function. The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account exactly, and the employed approximation represents a summation of a diagram subset with respect to the tunneling amplitude. By comparison to Monte Carlo data the formalism is shown to capture the basic properties of the strong coupling regime.

Charge transfer statistics of a molecular quantum dot with a vibrational degree of freedom

We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of a single-site quantum dot coupled to a local Holstein phonon for arbitrary transmission and weak electron-phonon coupling. We identify explicitly the contributions due to quasielastic and inelastic transport processes in the cumulant generating function and discuss their influence on the transport properties of the dot. We find that in the low-energy sector, the inelastic term causes a sign change in the shot noise correction at certain universal values of the transmission. Furthermore, we show that when the correction to the current due to inelastic processes vanishes, all odd order cumulants vanish as well.

Spin current generation and detection by a double quantum dot structure

We propose a device acting as a spin valve which is based on a double quantum dot structure with parallel topology. Using the exact analytical solution for the noninteracting case we argue that, at a certain constellation of system parameters and externally applied fields, the electric current through the constriction can become almost fully spin-polarized. We discuss the influence of the coupling asymmetry, finite temperatures and interactions on the efficiency of the device and make predictions for the experimental realization of the effect.

Transient dynamics of the nonequilibrium Majorana resonant level model

The Majorana resonant level model (MRLM) describes the universality class of the two-channel/terminal Kondo model at the Toulouse point as well as of a resonant level between two half-infinite Tomonaga--Luttinger liquids. We analyze the time evolution of the electric current and of the population function after an instantaneous switching on of the tunneling coupling. We find that the only timescale, which governs the relaxation of the initial dot preparation is the inverse contact transparency $Γ$, whatever the dot offset energy $Δ$, applied bias voltage or temperature. The voltage alone determines the superimposed oscillatory behavior of the observables for weak detuning $|Δ|<Γ/2$. In the opposite case of strong detuning $|Δ|>Γ/2$ a beating pattern emerges. For the current the finite temperature plays the similar role as the hybridization. The dot population function dynamics approaches that of a resonant ($Δ=0$) setup upon increasing the voltage or/and temperature.

Transient dynamics of the Anderson impurity model out of equilibrium

We discuss the transient effects in the Anderson impurity model that occur when two fermionic continua with finite bandwidths are instantaneously coupled to a central level. We present results for the analytically solvable noninteracting resonant level system first and then consistently extend them to the interacting case using the conventional perturbation theory and recently developed nonequilibrium Monte Carlo simulation schemes. The main goal is to gain an understanding of the full time-dependent nonlinear current-voltage characteristics and the population probability of the central level. We find that, contrary to the steady state, the transient dynamics of the system depends sensitively on the bandwidth of the electrode material.

Interaction-induced beats of Friedel oscillations in quantum wires

We analyze the spectrum of electron density oscillations in an interacting one-dimensional electron system with an impurity. The system's inhomogeneity is characterized by different values of Fermi wave vectors $k_F=k_{L/R}$ on left/right side of the scatterer, leading to a Landauer dipole formation. We demonstrate, that while in the noninteracting system the Friedel oscillations possess only one periodicity related to the local $k_F$, say $k_L$ on the left side, the interplay of the interactions and the Landauer dipole generates an additional peak in the spectrum of density oscillations at the counterpart $k_R$. Being only present in correlated systems, the position and shape of this spectral feature, which in coordinate space is observable as a beating pattern in the Friedel oscillations, reveals many important details about the nature of interactions. Thus it has a potential to become an investigation tool in condensed matter physics.

Statistics of charge transfer through impurities in strongly correlated 1D metals

We review recent advances in the field of full counting statistics (FCS) of charge transfer through impurities imbedded into strongly correlated one-dimensional metallic systems, modelled by Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs). We concentrate on the exact analytic solutions for the cumulant generating function (CGF), which became available recently and apply these methods in order to obtain the FCS of a non-trivial contact between two crossed TLL.

Full counting statistics of spin transfer through ultrasmall quantum dots

We analyze the spin-resolved full counting statistics of electron transfer through an ultrasmall quantum dot coupled to metallic electrodes. Modelling the setup by the Anderson Hamiltonian, we explicitly take into account the onsite Coulomb repulsion $U$. We calculate the cumulant generating function for the probability to transfer a certain number of electrons with a preselected spin orientation during a fixed time interval. With the cumulant generating function at hand we are then able to calculate the spin current correlations which are of outmost importance in the emerging field of spintronics. We confirm the existing results for the charge statistics and report the discovery of the new type of correlation between the spin-up and -down polarized electrons flows, which has a potential to become a powerful new instrument for the investigation of the Kondo effect in nanostructures.

Full counting statistics of spin transfer through the Kondo dot

We calculate the spin current distribution function for a Kondo dot in two different regimes. In the exactly solvable Toulouse limit the linear response, zero temperature statistics of the spin transfer is trinomial, such that all the odd moments vanish and the even moments follow a binomial distribution. On the contrary, the corresponding spin-resolved distribution turns out to be binomial. The combined spin and charge statistics is also determined. In particular, we find that in the case of a finite magnetic field or an asymmetric junction the spin and charge measurements become statistically dependent. Furthermore, we analyzed the spin counting statistics of a generic Kondo dot at and around the strong-coupling fixed point (the unitary limit). Comparing these results with the Toulouse limit calculation we determine which features of the latter are generic and which ones are artifacts of the spin symmetry breaking.
