Signs of atmospheric inhomogeneities in cool stars from 1D-NLTE analysis of iron lines

For the well studied halo star HD 122563 and the four stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397, we determine NLTE abundances of iron using classical plane-parallel model atmospheres. Each star reveals a discrepancy in abundances between the Fe I lines arising from the ground state and the other Fe I lines, in qualitative agreement with the 3D-LTE line formation predictions, however, the magnitude of the observed effect is a factor of 2 smaller compared with the predicted one. When ignoring the Fe I low-excitation lines, the NLTE abundances from the two ionization stages, Fe I and Fe II, are consistent in each investigated star. For the subgiants in NGC 6397, this is only true when using the cooler effective temperature scale of Alonso et al. (1999). We also present full 3D-LTE line formation calculations for some selected iron lines in the solar and metal-poor 4480/2/-3 models and NLTE calculations with the corresponding spatial and temporal average <3D> models. The use of the <3D> models is justified only for particular Fe I lines in particular physical conditions. Our NLTE calculations reproduce well the centre-to-limb variation of the solar Fe I 7780 A line, but they are unsuccessful for Fe I 6151 A. The metal-poor <3D> model was found to be adequite for the strong Fe I 5166 A (Eexc = 0) line, but inadequite in all other investigated cases.

Lobby index in networks

We propose a new node centrality measure in networks, the lobby index, which is inspired by Hirsch's h-index. It is shown that in scale free networks the l-index has power tail with exponent square of the exponent of the degree distribution one. Properties of the l-index and extensions are discussed.

New high resolution synthetic stellar libraries for the Gaia Mission

High resolution synthetic stellar libraries are of fundamental importance for the preparation of the Gaia Mission. We present new sets of spectral stellar libraries covering two spectral ranges: 300 --1100 nm at 0.1 nm resolution, and 840 -- 890 nm at 0.001 nm resolution. These libraries span a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich to very metal-poor (-5.0 $<$[Fe/H]$<$+1.0), from cool to hot (\teff=3000--50000 K) stars, including peculiar abundance variations. The spectral resolution, spectral type coverage and number of models represent a substantial improvement over previous libraries used in population synthesis models and in atmospheric analysis.

Reduction of Guided Acoustic Wave Brillouin Scattering in Photonic Crystal Fibers

Guided Acoustic Wave Brillouin Scattering (GAWBS) generates phase and polarization noise of light propagating in glass fibers. This excess noise affects the performance of various experiments operating at the quantum noise limit. We experimentally demonstrate the reduction of GAWBS noise in a photonic crystal fiber in a broad frequency range using cavity sound dynamics. We compare the noise spectrum to the one of a standard fiber and observe a 10-fold noise reduction in the frequency range up to 200 MHz. Based on our measurement results as well as on numerical simulations we establish a model for the reduction of GAWBS noise in photonic crystal fibers.

The CDFII Time-Of-Flight Detector and Impact on Beauty Flavor Tagging

The new CDFII detector incorporates a Time-of-Flight detector (TOF), employing plastic scintillator bars and fine-mesh photomultipliers. Since August 2001 the TOF system has been fully instrumented and integrated into the CDFII data acquisition system. With a design goal of $100 ps$ resolution the TOF system will provide at least two standard deviations separation between $K^{\pm}$ and $π^{\pm}$ for momenta $p<1.6 GeV/c$, complementing low momentum particle identification by means of the specific ionization energy loss measured in the drift chamber. We describe the design of the TOF detector and discuss the current status of its calibration and initial performances. Finally we review the expected impact of the TOF detector in the flavor tagging of neutral $B_S$ meson.
