Ti alloyed $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$: route towards wide band gap engineering

The suitability of Ti as a band gap modifier for $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ was investigated, taking advantage of the isostructural α-phases and high band gap difference between Ti$_2$O$_3$ and Ga$_2$O$_3$. Films of Ti:Ga$_2$O$_3$, with a range of Ti concentrations, synthesized by atomic layer deposition on sapphire substrates, were characterized to determine how crystallinity and band gap vary with composition for this alloy. The deposition of crystalline $α$-(Ti$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$)$_2$O$_3$ films with up to x~5.3%, was demonstrated. At greater Ti concentration, the films became amorphous. Modification of the band gap over a range of ~ 270 meV was achieved across the crystalline films and a maximum change in band gap from pure $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ of ~1.1 eV was observed for the films of greatest Ti fraction (61% Ti relative to Ga). The ability to maintain a crystalline phase at low fractions of Ti, accompanied by a significant modification in band gap shows promise for band gap engineering and the enhancement in versatility of application of $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ in optoelectronic devices.

Dark Energy Survey Year 1 results: The relationship between mass and light around cosmic voids

What are the mass and galaxy profiles of cosmic voids? In this paper we use two methods to extract voids in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 redMaGiC galaxy sample to address this question. We use either 2D slices in projection, or the 3D distribution of galaxies based on photometric redshifts to identify voids. For the mass profile, we measure the tangential shear profiles of background galaxies to infer the excess surface mass density. The signal-to-noise ratio for our lensing measurement ranges between 10.7 and 14.0 for the two void samples. We infer their 3D density profiles by fitting models based on N-body simulations and find good agreement for void radii in the range 15-85 Mpc. Comparison with their galaxy profiles then allows us to test the relation between mass and light at the 10%-level, the most stringent test to date. We find very similar shapes for the two profiles, consistent with a linear relationship between mass and light both within and outside the void radius. We validate our analysis with the help of simulated mock catalogues and estimate the impact of photometric redshift uncertainties on the measurement. Our methodology can be used for cosmological applications, including tests of gravity with voids. This is especially promising when the lensing profiles are combined with spectroscopic measurements of void dynamics via redshift-space distortions.

The IRAM/GISMO two-millimeter survey in the COSMOS field

We present deep continuum observations at a wavelength of 2mm centered on the COSMOS field using the Goddard IRAM Superconducting Millimeter Observer (GISMO) at the IRAM 30m-telescope. These data constitute the widest deep 2mm survey to-date, reaching a uniform $σ\sim0.23$mJy beam$^{-1}$ sensitivity over $\sim250$arcmin$^2$ at $\sim\,24''$ resolution. We detect four sources at high significance (S/N$\,\geq\,$4.4) with an expected number of false detection of 0.09 sources, and five sources at $4.4>\,$S/N$\,\geq\,3.7$ with an expected number of false detection of 1.65 sources. Combined with deep GISMO observations in GOODS-N, we constrain the 2mm number counts over one decade in flux density. These measurements agree with most galaxy evolution models tested here, except those with large population of dusty star-forming galaxies at $z>7$. Five GISMO sources have counterparts in (sub-)millimeter catalogs available in COSMOS. Their redshifts suggest that all but one lie above $z\sim3$. These four high-redshift ($z>3$) galaxies have $\tilde{z}=3.9$, SFRs $\sim\,$400 - 1200M$_{\odot}\,$yr$^{-1}$ and $M_{\rm dust}\sim10^{9.5}\,$M$_{\odot}$. They provide a relatively complete selection ($\sim66\%$) of the most luminous ($L_{\rm IR}>10^{12.6}\,$L$_{\odot}$) and highest redshift ($z>3$) galaxies detected within our survey area by AzTEC at 1.1mm. We thus conclude that 2mm surveys favor the selection of massive, vigorously star-forming, high-redshift galaxies. This is corroborated by GISMO-C4, a source with a low false detection probability ($\sim\,6.2\%$), for which the absence of a (sub-)millimeter counterpart supports a high redshift origin ($z\gtrsim3$).

More out of less: an excess integrated Sachs-Wolfe signal from supervoids mapped out by the Dark Energy Survey

The largest structures in the cosmic web probe the dynamical nature of dark energy through their integrated Sachs-Wolfe imprints. In the strength of the signal, typical cosmic voids have shown good consistency with expectation $A_{\rm ISW}=ΔT^{\rm data} / ΔT^{\rm theory}=1$, given the substantial cosmic variance. Discordantly, large-scale hills in the gravitational potential, or supervoids, have shown excess signals. In this study, we mapped out 87 new supervoids in the total 5000 deg$^2$ footprint of the Dark Energy Survey at $0.2<z<0.9$ to probe these anomalous claims. We found an excess imprinted profile with $ A_{\rm ISW}\approx4.1\pm2.0$ amplitude. The combination with independent BOSS data reveals an ISW imprint of supervoids at the $3.3σ$ significance level with an enhanced $A_{\rm ISW}\approx5.2\pm1.6$ amplitude. The tension with $Λ$CDM predictions is equivalent to $2.6σ$ and remains unexplained.

Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Results: Curved-Sky Weak Lensing Mass Map

We construct the largest curved-sky galaxy weak lensing mass map to date from the DES first-year (DES Y1) data. The map, about 10 times larger than previous work, is constructed over a contiguous $\approx1,500 $deg$^2$, covering a comoving volume of $\approx10 $Gpc$^3$. The effects of masking, sampling, and noise are tested using simulations. We generate weak lensing maps from two DES Y1 shear catalogs, Metacalibration and Im3shape, with sources at redshift $0.2<z<1.3,$ and in each of four bins in this range. In the highest signal-to-noise map, the ratio between the mean signal-to-noise in the E-mode and the B-mode map is $\sim$1.5 ($\sim$2) when smoothed with a Gaussian filter of $σ_{G}=30$ (80) arcminutes. The second and third moments of the convergence $κ$ in the maps are in agreement with simulations. We also find no significant correlation of $κ$ with maps of potential systematic contaminants. Finally, we demonstrate two applications of the mass maps: (1) cross-correlation with different foreground tracers of mass and (2) exploration of the largest peaks and voids in the maps.

Imaging stray magnetic field of individual ferromagnetic nanotubes

We use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device to map the stray magnetic field produced by individual ferromagnetic nanotubes (FNTs) as a function of applied magnetic field. The images are taken as each FNT is led through magnetic reversal and are compared with micromagnetic simulations, which correspond to specific magnetization configurations. In magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the FNT long axis, their magnetization appears to reverse through vortex states, i.e.\ configurations with vortex end domains or -- in the case of a sufficiently short FNT -- with a single global vortex. Geometrical imperfections in the samples and the resulting distortion of idealized mangetization configurations influence the measured stray-field patterns.

Imprint of DES super-structures on the Cosmic Microwave Background

Small temperature anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background can be sourced by density perturbations via the late-time integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. Large voids and superclusters are excellent environments to make a localized measurement of this tiny imprint. In some cases excess signals have been reported. We probed these claims with an independent data set, using the first year data of the Dark Energy Survey in a different footprint, and using a different super-structure finding strategy. We identified 52 large voids and 102 superclusters at redshifts $0.2 < z < 0.65$. We used the Jubilee simulation to a priori evaluate the optimal ISW measurement configuration for our compensated top-hat filtering technique, and then performed a stacking measurement of the CMB temperature field based on the DES data. For optimal configurations, we detected a cumulative cold imprint of voids with $ΔT_{f} \approx -5.0\pm3.7~μK$ and a hot imprint of superclusters $ΔT_{f} \approx 5.1\pm3.2~μK$ ; this is $\sim1.2σ$ higher than the expected $|ΔT_{f}| \approx 0.6~μK$ imprint of such super-structures in $Λ$CDM. If we instead use an a posteriori selected filter size ($R/R_{v}=0.6$), we can find a temperature decrement as large as $ΔT_{f} \approx -9.8\pm4.7~μK$ for voids, which is $\sim2σ$ above $Λ$CDM expectations and is comparable to previous measurements made using SDSS super-structure data.

Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the internal and lattice structures of skyrmions by off-axis electron holography

The internal and lattice structures of magnetic skyrmions in B20-type FeGe are investigated using off-axis electron holography. The temperature, magnetic field and angular dependence of the magnetic moments of individual skyrmions are analyzed. Whereas the internal skyrmion shape is found to vary with magnetic field, the inter-skyrmion distance remains almost unchanged in the lattice phase. The amplitude of the local magnetic moment is found to depend on temperature, while the skyrmion shape does not. Deviations from a circular to a hexagonal skyrmion structure are observed in the lattice phase.

Low Noise Titanium Nitride KIDs for SuperSpec: A Millimeter-Wave On-Chip Spectrometer

SuperSpec is a novel on-chip spectrometer we are developing for multi-object, moderate resolution (R = 100 - 500), large bandwidth (~1.65:1) submillimeter and millimeter survey spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. The spectrometer employs a filter bank architecture, and consists of a series of half-wave resonators formed by lithographically-patterned superconducting transmission lines. The signal power admitted by each resonator is detected by a lumped element titanium nitride (TiN) kinetic inductance detector (KID) operating at 100 - 200 MHz. We have tested a new prototype device that achieves the targeted R = 100 resolving power, and has better detector sensitivity and optical efficiency than previous devices. We employ a new method for measuring photon noise using both coherent and thermal sources of radiation to cleanly separate the contributions of shot and wave noise. We report an upper limit to the detector NEP of $1.4\times10^{-17}$ W Hz$^{-1/2}$, within 10% of the photon noise limited NEP for a ground-based R=100 spectrometer.

Resolving the Merging Planck Cluster PLCK G147.3-16.6 with GISMO

The $Planck$ satellite has recently completed an all-sky galaxy cluster survey exploiting the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect to locate some of the most massive systems observable. With a median redshift of $\left =0.22$, the clusters found by $Planck$ at $z>0.3$ are proving to be exceptionally massive and/or disturbed systems. One notable $Planck$ discovery at $z=0.645$, PLCK G147.3-16.6, has a dual core and hosts a radio halo, indicating it is likely in the process of merging. We present a 16."5 resolution SZ observation of this high-$z$ merger using the Goddard-IRAM Superconducting 2 Millimeter Observer (GISMO), and compare it to X-ray follow-up observations with XMM-$Newton$. We find the SZ pressure substructure is offset from the core components seen in X-ray. We interpret this offset as possible line of sight temperature or density substructure due to the on-going merger.

Highly efficient star formation in NGC 5253 possibly from stream-fed accretion

A local dwarf galaxy, NGC 5253, has a young super star cluster that may provide an example of highly efficient star formation. Here we report the detection and imaging, with the Submillimeter Array, of the J= 3-2 rotational transition of CO at the location of the massive cluster associated with the supernebula. The gas cloud is hot, dense, quiescent, and extremely dusty. Its gas-to-dust ratio is lower than the Galactic value, which we attribute to dust enrichment by Wolf-Rayet stars within the embedded star cluster. Its star formation efficiency exceeds 50%, ten times higher than clouds in the Milky Way: this cloud is a factory of stars and soot. We suggest that high efficiency results from the force-feeding of star formation by a streamer of gas falling into the galaxy.

Cold dust in giant barred galaxy NGC1365

Observations of galaxies at sub-millimeter wavelengths, where the emission is mainly due to cold dust, are required to constrain the dust physical properties and provide important insight on the gas content of galaxies. We mapped NGC1365 at 870um with LABOCA, the Large APEX Bolometer Camera, allowing us to probe the central mass concentration as well as the rate at which the gas flows to the center. We obtained the dust physical properties both globally and locally for different locations in the galaxy. A 20 K modified black body represents about 98% of the total dust content of the galaxy, the rest can be represented by a warmer dust component of 40 K. The bar exhibits an east-west asymmetry in the dust distribution: The eastern bar is heavier than the western bar by more than a factor of 4. Integrating the dust SED, we derive a total infrared (IR) luminosity of 9.8 x 10^{10} L_{\odot} leading to a dust-enshrouded star formation rate of ~16.7 M_{\odot} per year in NGC1365. We derive the gas mass from the measurements of the dust emission resulting in a CO-to-H2 conversion factor of X_{CO}~1.2x10^{20} mol cm^{-2} (K km s^{-1})^{-1} in the central disk including the bar. Taking into account the metallicity variation, the central gas mass concentration is only ~20% at R<40" (3.6 kpc). On the other hand, the time-scale with which the gas flows into the center, ~300 Myr, is rather short. This indicates that the current central mass in NGC1365 is evolving fast due to the strong bar.

Self-Diffusion of Iron in L10 FePd films Upon He-irradiation (alternative title: An alternative for diffusion studies in isotopic FePd multilayers)

The continuous need towards improving the capacity of magnetic storage devices requires materials with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. FePd, CoPd and their Co(Fe)Pt counterparts very attractive candidate for such purposes. The magnetic properties of these films are largely dependent on the orientation and local distribution of the L10 FePd phase fraction which are mainly controlled by diffusion processes and involve diffusion paths of a few angstroms. Highly ordered as well as disordered epitaxial isotope-periodic 57FePd/natFePd (001) thin films were prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy on MgO(001) substrate. Short range diffusion of different phases in FePd thin film induced by room temperature 130 keV He+ irradiation was investigated at fluences up to 30\times1015 ions/cm2. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy and synchrotron Mössbauer reflectivity experiments showed that the inter-atomic diffusion across 57FePd/natFePd interface occur mainly via the iron rich regions. The ratio of the diffusion length in the L10, fcc and iron rich structure are 1:1.4:5.6 respectively. Assuming that the diffusion coefficient in the fcc phase is between the diffusion coefficient of the L10 phase in the crystallographic c direction and perpendicular to it, the diffusion coefficient in the c-direction of the L10 phase is found more than 1.9 times lower than in the a-b plane.

Self-Diffusion of Iron in L10 FePd film - as revealed by reflectometric methods

L10 (CuAu(I)-type) ordered FePd as well as FePt and CoPt, due to their high magnetic anisotropy, are candidate materials for future ultra-high density magnetic recording. Atomic diffusion governs the structural relaxation and associated changes in the physical and magnetic properties in these alloys. Such processes involve diffusion paths of a few angstroms. In developing modern storage devices it is indispensable to understand these processes. Neutron reflectometry (NR) and Synchrotron Mössbauer Reflectometry (SMR) are suitable non destructive methods to study self-diffusion in a chemically homogenous isotope multilayer with diffusion lengths of the order of a few angstroms. From the diffusion parameters obtained from NR and SMR evaluation we determined activation energies (Q) and preexponent factors (D0) for the distinct environment in the FePd samples. We obtained the highest activation energy (1.82\pm0.38 eV)and lowest preexponential factor((5.76\pm0.35)*10-14 m2/s) for the ordered L10 as oppose to the iron rich regions were the activation energy (1.48\pm0.26 \pmV) found to be lowest and the preexponential factor the highest ((1.01\pm0.61)*10-13 m2/s).

The Radio - 2 mm Spectral Index of the Crab Nebula Measured with GISMO

We present results of 2 mm observations of the Crab Nebula, obtained using the Goddard-IRAM Superconducting 2 Millimeter Observer (GISMO) bolometer camera on the IRAM 30 m telescope. Additional 3.3 mm observations with the MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope are also presented. The integrated 2 mm flux density of the Crab Nebula provides no evidence for the emergence of a second synchrotron component that has been proposed. It is consistent with the radio power law spectrum, extrapolated up to a break frequency of log(nu_{b} [GHz]) = 2.84 +/- 0.29 or nu_{b} = 695^{+651}_{-336} GHz. The Crab Nebula is well-resolved by the ~16.7" beam (FWHM) of GISMO. Comparison to radio data at comparable spatial resolution enables us to confirm significant spatial variation of the spectral index between 21 cm and 2 mm. The main effect is a spectral flattening in the inner region of the Crab Nebula, correlated with the toroidal structure at the center of the nebula that is prominent in the near-IR through X-ray regime.

Far-Infrared Properties of Spitzer-selected Luminous Starbursts

We present SHARC-2 350 micron data on 20 luminous z ~ 2 starbursts with S(1.2mm) > 2 mJy from the Spitzer-selected samples of Lonsdale et al. and Fiolet et al. All the sources were detected, with S(350um) > 25 mJy for 18 of them. With the data, we determine precise dust temperatures and luminosities for these galaxies using both single-temperature fits and models with power-law mass--temperature distributions. We derive appropriate formulae to use when optical depths are non-negligible. Our models provide an excellent fit to the 6um--2mm measurements of local starbursts. We find characteristic single-component temperatures T1 ~ 35.5+-2.2 K and integrated infrared (IR) luminosities around 10^(12.9+-0.1) Lsun for the SWIRE-selected sources. Molecular gas masses are estimated at 4 x 10^(10) Msun, assuming kappa(850um)=0.15 m^2/kg and a submillimeter-selected galaxy (SMG)-like gas-to-dust mass ratio. The best-fit models imply >~2 kpc emission scales. We also note a tight correlation between rest-frame 1.4 GHz radio and IR luminosities confirming star formation as the predominant power source. The far-IR properties of our sample are indistinguishable from the purely submillimeter-selected populations from current surveys. We therefore conclude that our original selection criteria, based on mid-IR colors and 24 um flux densities, provides an effective means for the study of SMGs at z ~ 1.5--2.5.

Wide-field mid-infrared and millimetre imaging of the high-redshift radio galaxy, 4C41.17

We present deep 350- and 1200-micron imaging of the region around 4C41.17 -- one of the most distant (z = 3.792) and luminous known radio galaxies -- obtained with the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC-II) and the Max Planck Millimeter Bolometer Array (MAMBO). The radio galaxy is robustly detected at 350- and 1200-micron, as are two nearby 850-micron-selected galaxies; a third 850-micron source is detected at 350-micron and coincides with a ~ 2-sigma feature in the 1200-micron map. Further away from the radio galaxy an additional nine sources are detected at 1200-micron, bringing the total number of detected (sub)millimeter selected galaxies (SMGs) in this field to 14. Using radio images from the Very Large Array (VLA) and Spitzer mid-infrared (mid-IR) data, we find statistically robust radio and/or 24-micron counterparts to eight of the 14 SMGs in the field around 4C41.17. Follow-up spectroscopy with Keck/LRIS has yielded redshifts for three of the eight robustly identified SMGs, placing them in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 2.7, i.e. well below that of 4C41.17. We infer photometric redshifts for a further four sources using their 1.6-micron (rest-frame) stellar feature as probed by the IRAC bands; only one of them is likely to be at the same redshift as 4C41.17. Thus at least four, and as many as seven, of the SMGs within the 4C41.17 field are physically unrelated to the radio galaxy. With the redshift information at hand we are able to constrain the observed over-densities of SMGs within radial bins stretching to R=50 and 100" (~ 0.4 and ~ 0.8Mpc at z ~ 3.8) from the radio galaxy to ~ 5x and ~ 2x that of the field, dropping off to the background value at R=150". First Astronomical Detection of the Cumulene Carbon Chain Molecule H_2C_6 in TMC1

The cumulene carbenes are important components of hydrocarbon chemistry in low mass star forming cores. Here we report the first astronomical detection of the long chain cumulene carbene H_2C_6 in the interstellar cloud TMC1, from observations of two of its rotational transitions: $J_{K,K'} = 7_{1,7} \rightarrow 6_{1,6}$ at 18.8 GHz and $8_{1,8} \rightarrow 7_{1,7}$ at 21.5 GHz, using NASA's Deep Space Network 70 m antenna at Goldstone, California. In addition we also observed the shorter cumulene carbene, H_2C_4 at the same position. The fractional abundance of H_2C_6 relative to H_2 is about $4.7 \times 10^{-11}$ and H_2C_4 is about $1.1 \times 10^{-9}$. The abundance of H_2C_6 is in fairly good agreement with gas phase chemical models for young molecular cloud cores, but the abundance of H_2C_4 is significantly larger than predicted.
