Bound on 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing from the first four-week science run of KATRIN

We report on the light sterile neutrino search from the first four-week science run of the KATRIN experiment in~2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter down to 40 eV below the endpoint at 18.57 keV. We consider the framework with three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino of mass $m_{4}$. The analysis is sensitive to a fourth mass state $m^2_{4} \lesssim$ 1000 eV$^2$ and to active-to-sterile neutrino mixing down to $|U_{e4}|^2 \gtrsim 2\cdot10^{-2}$. No significant spectral distortion is observed and exclusion bounds on the sterile mass and mixing are reported. These new limits supersede the Mainz results and improve the Troitsk bound for $m^2_{4} <$ 30 eV$^2$. The reactor and gallium anomalies are constrained for $ 100 < Δ{m}^2_{41} < 1000$ eV$^2$.

Feasibility of photoelectron sources for testing the energy scale stablity of the KATRIN beta-ray spectrometer

Photoabsorption of nuclear gamma-rays in thin metallic convertors was examined with the aim to produce monoenergetic photoelectrons of kinetic energy around 18.6 keV and natural width of about 1 eV. Calculations were carried out for commercial photon sources of 241Am (1.1 GBq) and 119mSn (0.5 GBq) irradiating Co and Ti convertors. Photoelectrons ejected by 241Am gamma- and X-rays from Co convertors of various thickness were measured with two electrostatic spectrometers.

Long term stability of the energy of conversion electrons emitted from solid 83Rb/83mKr source

The mono-energetic conversion electrons from the decay of 83mKr represent a unique tool for the energy calibration, energy scale monitoring and systematic studies of the tritium beta spectrum measurement in the neutrino mass experiment KATRIN. For this reason, the long term stability of energy of the 7.5 keV and 17.8 keV conversion electrons populated in the decay of solid 83Rb/83mKr vacuum evaporated sources was examined by means of two electron spectrometers.

Final Results from phase II of the Mainz Neutrino Mass Search in Tritium $β$ Decay

The paper reports on the improved Mainz experiment on tritum $β$ spectroscopy which yields a 10 times' higher signal to background ratio than before. The main experimental effects and systematic uncertainties have been investigated in side experiments and possible error sources have been eliminated. Extensive data taking took place in the years 1997 to 2001. A residual analysis of the data sets yields for the square of the electron antineutrino mass the final result of $m^2(ν_e)=(-0.6 \pm 2.2_{\rm{stat}} \pm 2.1_{\rm{syst}})$ eV$^2$/c$^4$. We derive an upper limit of $m(ν_e)\leq 2.3$ eV/c$^2$ at 95% confidence level for the mass itself.
