Room temperature optical manipulation of nuclear spin polarization in GaAsN

The effect of hyperfine interaction on the room-temperature defect-enabled spin filtering effect in GaNAs alloys is investigated both experimentally and theoretically through a master equation approach based on the hyperfine and Zeeman interaction between electron and nuclear spin of the spin filtering defect. We show that the nuclear spin polarization can be tuned through the optically induced spin polarization of conduction band electrons.

Constants of motion for the magnetic force: the angular momentum and the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector

It is well-known that an electric charge under a uniform magnetic field has a bidimensional motion if its initial position and velocity are perpendicular to this magnetic field. Although some constants of motion, as the energy and angular momentum, have been identified for this system, its features hide others. In this work, we build generalizations of the angular momentum and the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector and show that these vectors are constants of motion. Moreover, from them, we find four dynamically independent conserved qualities.

Quantum and classical dissipation of charged particles

A Hamiltonian approach is presented to study the two dimensional motion of damped electric charges in time dependent electromagnetic fields. The classical and the corresponding quantum mechanical problems are solved for particular cases using canonical transformations applied to Hamiltonians for a particle with variable mass. The Green's function is constructed and, from it, the motion of a Gaussian wave packet is studied in detail.

Giant spin-dependent photo-conductivity in GaAsN dilute nitride semiconductor

A theoretical and experimental study of the spin-dependent photoconductivity in dilute Nitride GaAsN is presented. The non linear transport model we develop here is based on the rate equations for electrons, holes, deep paramagnetic and non paramagnetic centers both under CW and pulsed optical excitation. Emphasis is given to the effect of the competition between paramagnetic centers and non paramagnetic centers which allows us to reproduce the measured characteristics of the spin-dependent recombination power dependence. Particular attention is paid to the role of an external magnetic field in Voigt geometry. The photoconductivity exhibits a Hanle-type curve whereas the spin polarization of electrons shows two superimposed Lorentzian curves with different widths, respectively related to the recombination of free and trapped electrons. The model is capable of reproducing qualitatively and quantitatively the most important features of photoluminescence and photocurrent experiments and is helpful in providing insight on the various mechanisms involved in the electron spin polarization and filtering in GaAsN semiconductors.

Room temperature Giant Spin-dependent Photoconductivity in dilute nitride semiconductors

By combining optical spin injection techniques with transport spectroscopy tools, we demonstrate a spin-photodetector allowing for the electrical measurement and active filtering of conduction band electron spin at room temperature in a non-magnetic GaAsN semiconductor structure. By switching the polarization of the incident light from linear to circular, we observe a Giant Spin-dependent Photoconductivity (GSP) reaching up to 40 % without the need of an external magnetic field. We show that the GSP is due to a very efficient spin filtering effect of conduction band electrons on Nitrogen-induced Ga self-interstitial deep paramagnetic centers.

Non linear transport theory for negative-differential resistance states of two dimensional electron systems in strong magnetic fields

We present a model to describe the nonlinear response to a direct dc current applied to a two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field. The model is based on the solution of the von Neumann equation incorporating the exact dynamics of two-dimensional damped electrons in the presence of arbitrarily strong magnetic and dc electric fields, while the effects of randomly distributed impurities are perturbatively added. From the analysis of the differential resistivity and the longitudinal voltage we observe the formation of negative differential resistivity states (NDRS) that are the precursors of the zero differential resistivity states (ZDRS). The theoretical predictions correctly reproduce the main experimental features provided that the inelastic scattering rate obey a $T^2$ temperature dependence, consistent with electron-electron interaction effects.

Hall field induced magnetoresistance oscillations of a two-dimensional electron system

We develop a model of the nonlinear response to a DC electrical current of a two dimensional electron system(2DES) placed on a magnetic field. Based on the exact solution of the Schroedinger equation in arbitrarily strong electric and magnetic fields, and separating the relative and guiding center coordinates, a Kubo-like formula for the current is worked out as a response to the impurity scattering. Self-consistent expressions determine the longitudinal and Hall components of the electric field in terms of the DC current. The differential resistivity displays strong Hall field-induced oscillations, in agreement with the main features of the phenomenon observed in recent experiments.

Photoluminescence of nanocrystals embedded in oxide matrices

We used the theory of finite periodic systems to explain the photoluminescence spectra dependence on the average diameter of nanocrystals embedded in oxide matrices. Because of the broad matrix band gap, the photoluminescence response is basically determined by isolated nanocrystals and sequences of a few of them. With this model we were able to reproduce the shape and displacement of the experimentally observed photoluminescence spectra.

Hall conductivity as a topological invariant

The object of the present work is to study the quantum Hall effect through its symmetries and topological aspects. We consider the model of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of applied in-plain electric field and perpendicular magnetic field. We refer to this as the two dimensional electric-magnetic Bloch problem (EMB). The Hall conductivity quatizations beyond the linear response approximation is analyzed.

Quantum Hall effect beyond the linear response approximation

The problem of Bloch electrons in two dimensions subject to magnetic and intense electric fields is investigated, the quantum Hall conductance is calculated beyond the linear response approximation. Magnetic translations, electric evolution and energy translation operators are used to specify the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. For rational values of the magnetic flux quanta per unit cell and commensurate orientations of the electric field relative to the original lattice, an extended superlattice is defined and a complete set of mutually commuting space-time symmetry operators are obtained. Dynamics of the system is governed by a finite difference equation that exactly includes the effects of: an arbitrary periodic potential, an electric field orientated in a commensurable direction of the lattice, and coupling between Landau levels. A weak periodic potential broadens each Landau level in a series of minibands, separated by the corresponding minigaps; additionally the effect of the electric field in the energy spectrum is to superimpose equally spaced discrete levels, in this "magnetic Stark ladder" the energy separation is an integer multiple of $ h E / a B $, with $a$ the lattice parameter. A closed expression for the Hall conductance, valid to all orders in $\bs E$ is obtained, the leading order term reduces to the result of Thouless et al, in which $σ_H^{(0)}$ is quantized in units of $e^2/h$. The first order corrections exactly cancels for any miniband that is completely filled. Second order corrections for the miniband conductance are explicitly calculated as $σ_H^{(2)} \propto e^3/ U_0^2 B$, with $U_0$ the strength of the periodic potential. However the use of a sum rule shows that $σ_H^{(2)}$ cancels when a Landau band is fully occupied.

ac Susceptibility in Granular Superconductors: Theory and Experiment

A phenomenological theory to describe the electromagnetic properties of granular superconductors, based on known bulk superconductors expressions and conventional Josephson's junctions tunneling currents, is presented and succesfully used to fit distinct experimental results for the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the temperature and the applied magnetic field of rather different samples.
