Revisiting magnon bound states: ferro-antiferromagnetic $J_1\!-\!J_2$ square-lattice model

A comprehensive analysis of pairing and bound states of magnons in the Heisenberg $S\!=\!1/2$ square-lattice $J_1\!-\!J_2$ ferro-antiferromagnetic model is presented. We highlight the similarities and differences between the bound states of spin flips on a lattice and those of particles in the continuum. Magnon bound states at finite pair momentum are studied throughout the Brillouin zone and a convenient lattice partial-wave nomenclature is advocated. The mechanisms of enhanced stability or fragility of these bound states for the high-symmetry pair momenta are identified and quantified as relating to the effective dimensional reduction or enhancement, respectively. These effects are also shown to control the evolution of the bound states with the model parameters, providing a transparent framework for understanding magnon pairing in a more general setting. A method to determine the bound state phase boundaries is presented.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of the S = 5/2 almost Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet K2Mn(SeO3)2

We report calorimetric, magnetic, and neutron scattering studies on an S = 5/2, nearly Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K2Mn(SeO3)2 with weak XXZ easy-axis anisotropy. Multiple magnetic phases are identified, including a non-collinear Y phase in zero field, a field-induced collinear m = 1/3 magnetization plateau, and a high-field V phase. In the Y phase, the magnetic excitation spectrum exhibits both single-magnon excitations and an extended high-energy continuum. Both features are well described by non-linear spin wave theory. In the field-induced phases, complex effects of the spectrum renormalization even for large S = 5/2 material are clearly detectable. These results underscore the essential role of magnon-magnon interactions in the dynamics of large-S Heisenberg spin systems on a triangular lattice.

Demystifying quantum escapism on the honeycomb lattice

We demonstrate the versatility, simplicity, and power of the minimally-augmented spin-wave theory in studying phase diagrams of the quantum spin models in which unexpected magnetically ordered phases occur or the existing ones expand beyond their classical stability regions. We use this method to obtain approximate phase diagrams of the two paradigmatic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ models on the honeycomb lattice: the $J_1$-$J_3$ ferro-antiferromagnetic and $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ models. For the $J_1$-$J_3$ case, various combinations of the $XXZ$ anisotropies are analyzed. In a dramatic deviation from their classical phase diagrams, which host significant regions of the noncollinear spiral phases, quantum fluctuations stabilize several unconventional collinear phases and significantly extend conventional ones to completely supersede spiral states. These results are in close agreement with the available density-matrix renormalization group calculations. The applicability of this approach to the other models and its potential extension to different types of orders are discussed.

The Saga of $α$-RuCl$_3$: Parameters, Models, and Phase Diagrams

RuCl$_3$ was likely the first ever deliberately synthesized ruthenium compound, following the discovery of the $_{44}$Ru element in 1844. For a long time it was known as an oxidation catalyst, with its physical properties being discrepant and confusing, until a decade ago when its allotropic form $α$-RuCl$_3$ rose to exceptional prominence. This "re-discovery" of $α$-RuCl$_3$ has not only reshaped the hunt for a material manifestation of the Kitaev spin liquid, but it has opened the floodgates of theoretical and experimental research in the many unusual phases and excitations that the anisotropic-exchange magnets as a class of compounds have to offer. Given its importance for the field of Kitaev materials, it is astonishing that the low-energy spin model that describes this compound and its possible proximity to the much-desired spin-liquid state is still a subject of significant debate ten years later. In the present study, we argue that the existing key phenomenological observations put strong natural constraints on the effective microscopic spin model of $α$-RuCl$_3$, and specifically on its spin-orbit-induced anisotropic-exchange parameters that are responsible for the non-trivial physical properties of this material. These constraints allow one to focus on the relevant region of the multi-dimensional phase diagram of the $α$-RuCl$_3$ model, suggest an intuitive description of it via a different parametrization of the exchange matrix, offer a unifying view on the earlier assessments of its parameters, and bring closer together several approaches to the derivation of anisotropic-exchange models. We explore extended phase diagrams relevant to the $α$-RuCl$_3$ parameter space using quasi-classical, Luttinger-Tisza, exact diagonalization, and density-matrix renormalization group methods, demonstrating a remarkably c... BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$: Strong Kitaev, After All

The inelastic neutron scattering results and their analysis unequivocally point to a dominant Kitaev interaction in the honeycomb-lattice cobaltate BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$. Our anisotropic-exchange model closely describes $all$ available neutron scattering data in the material's field-polarized phase. The density-matrix renormalization group results for our model are in close accord with the unusual double-zigzag magnetic order and the low in-plane saturation field of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$.

Phase Diagram of the Easy-Axis Triangular-Lattice $J_1\!-\!J_2$ Model

The phase diagram of the $S\!=\!1/2$ easy-axis triangular-lattice $J_1\!-\!J_2$ model is investigated using the density-matrix renormalization group and analytical insights. We find a significant spin-liquid region extending from the Heisenberg limit and residing between the Y phase-known as the magnetic analogue of the "supersolid"-and collinear stripe phase. The order parameters of the supersolid are analyzed and an understanding of its lack of ferromagnetic moment is suggested.

Quantum Phases in the Honeycomb-Lattice $J_1$--$J_3$ Ferro-Antiferromagnetic Model

Using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations and minimally augmented spin-wave theory, we demonstrate that the phase diagram of the quantum $S\!=\!\frac12$ $J_1$--$J_3$ ferro-antiferromagnetic model on the honeycomb lattice differs dramatically from the classical one. It hosts the double-zigzag and Ising-z phases as unexpected intermediaries between ferromagnetic and zigzag states that are also extended beyond their classical regions of stability. In broad agreement with quantum order-by-disorder arguments, these collinear phases replace the classical spiral state.

Stripe magnetic order and field-induced quantum criticality in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CsCeSe$_2$

The two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) is a textbook example of frustrated magnetic systems. Despite its simplicity, the TLAF model exhibits a highly rich and complex magnetic phase diagram, featuring numerous distinct ground states that can be stabilized through frustrated next-nearest-neighbor couplings or anisotropy. In this paper, we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the TLAF material CsCeSe$_2$. The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) together with specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations of crystalline electric field suggest that the ground state of Ce ions is a Kramers doublet with strong easy-plane anisotropy. Elastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate the presence of stripe-$yz$ magnetic order that develops below $T_{\rm N} = 0.35$ K, with the zero-field ordered moment of $m_{\rm Ce} \approx 0.65~μ_{\rm B}$. Application of magnetic field first increases the ordering temperature by about 20% at the intermediate field region and eventually suppresses the stripe order in favor of the field-polarized ferromagnetic state via a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT). The field-induced response demonstrates sizable anisotropy for different in-plane directions, $\mathbf{B}\parallel{}\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{B}\perp{}\mathbf{a}$, which indicates the presence of bond-dependent coupling in the spin Hamiltonian. We further show theoretically that the presence of anisotropic bond-dependent interactions can change the universality class of QPT for $\mathbf{B}\parallel{}\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{B}\perp{}\mathbf{a}$.

Quantum Spin Dynamics Due to Strong Kitaev Interactions in the Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsCeSe$_2$

The extraordinary properties of the Kitaev model have motivated an intense search for new physics in materials that combine geometrical and bond frustration. In this work, we employ inelastic neutron scattering, spin wave theory, and exact diagonalization to study the spin dynamics in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) CsCeSe$_2$. This material orders into a stripe phase, which is demonstrated to arise as a consequence of the off-diagonal bond-dependent terms in the spin Hamiltonian. By studying the spin dynamics at intermediate fields, we identify an interaction between the single-magnon state and the two-magnon continuum that causes decay of coherent magnon excitations, level repulsion, and transfer of spectral weight to the continuum that are controlled by the strength of the magnetic field. Our results provide a microscopic mechanism for the stabilization of the stripe phase in TLAF and show how complex many-body physics can be present in the spin dynamics in a magnet with strong Kitaev coupling even in an ordered ground state.

Magnon interactions in the quantum paramagnetic phase of CoNb$_2$O$_6$

In this work, we study effects of magnon interactions in the excitation spectrum of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in the quantum paramagnetic phase in transverse field, where the $1/S$ spin-wave theory exhibits unphysical divergences at the critical field. We propose a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approach that eliminates such unphysical singularities while preserving the integrity of the singular threshold phenomena of magnon decay and spectrum renormalization that are present in both theory and experiment. With the microscopic parameters adopted from previous studies, this method yields a close quantitative agreement with the available experimental data for CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in the relevant regime. Insights into the general structure of the spin-anisotropic model of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and related zigzag chain materials are also provided and a discussion of the effects of additional longitudinal field on the spectrum is given.

Bond-dependent anisotropy and magnon decay in cobalt-based Kitaev triangular antiferromagnet

The Kitaev model, a honeycomb network of spins with bond-dependent anisotropic interactions, is a rare example of having a quantum spin liquid ground state. Although most Kitaev model candidate materials eventually order magnetically due to inevitable non-Kitaev terms, their bond-dependent anisotropy manifests in unusual spin dynamics. It has recently been suggested that bond-dependent anisotropy can stabilise novel magnetic phases and exotic spin dynamics on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice. However, few materials have been identified with simultaneous geometric frustration and bond-dependent anisotropy. Here, we report a frustrated triangular lattice with bond-dependent anisotropy in the cobalt-based triangular van der Waals antiferromagnet CoI2. Its momentum and energy-resolved spin dynamics exhibit substantial magnon breakdown and complex level repulsion, as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. A thorough examination of excitations in both the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states reveals that the bond-dependent anisotropy is the origin of the spiral order and the magnon breakdown found in CoI2. Our result paves the way toward a new research direction for the Kitaev model with geometrical frustration.

Where is the Quantum Spin Nematic?

We provide strong evidence of the spin-nematic state in a paradigmatic ferro-antiferromagnetic $J_1$--$J_2$ model using analytical and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In zero field, the attraction of spin-flip pairs leads to a first-order transition and no nematic state, while pair-repulsion at larger $J_2$ stabilizes the nematic phase in a narrow region near the pair-condensation field. A devil's staircase of multi-pair condensates is conjectured for weak pair-attraction. A suppression of the spin-flip gap by many-body effects leads to an order-of-magnitude contraction of the nematic phase compared to naïve expectations. The proposed phase diagram should be broadly valid.

Easy-plane anisotropic-exchange magnets on a honeycomb lattice: quantum effects and dealing with them

We provide analytical and numerical insights into the phase diagram and other properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice in the {\it easy-plane} limit, in which interactions are only between spin components that belong to the plane of magnetic ions. This parameter subspace allows for a much-needed systematic {\it quantitative} investigation of spin excitations in the ordered phases and of their generic features. Specifically, we demonstrate that in this limit one can consistently take into account magnon interactions in both zero-field zigzag and field-polarized phases. For the nominally polarized phase, we propose a regularization of the unphysical divergences that occur at the critical field and are plaguing the $1/S$-approximation in this class of models. For the explored parameter subspace, all symmetry-allowed terms of the standard parametrization of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model, such as $K$, $J$, and $Γ$, are significant, making the offered consideration relevant to a much wider parameter space. The dynamical structure factor near paramagnetic critical point illustrates this relevance by showing features that are reminiscent of the ones observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$, underscoring that they are not unique and should be common to a wide range of parameters of the model and, by an extension, to other materials.

Roller-Coaster in a Flatland: Magnetoresistivity in Eu-intercalated Graphite

Novel phenomena in magnetically-intercalated graphite has been a subject of much research, pioneered and promoted by M.~S. and G.~Dresselhaus and many others in the 1980s. Among the most enigmatic findings of that era was a dramatic, roller-coaster-like behavior of the magnetoresistivity in EuC$_6$ compound, in which magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ ions form a triangular lattice that is commensurate to graphite honeycomb planes. In this study, we provide a long-awaited {\it microscopic} explanation of this behavior, demonstrating that the resistivity of EuC$_6$ is dominated by spin excitations in Eu-planes and their highly nontrivial evolution with the magnetic field. Together with our theoretical analysis, the present study showcases the power of the synthetic 2D materials as a source of potentially significant insights into the nature of exotic spin excitations.

Anisotropic-Exchange Magnets on a Triangular Lattice: Spin Waves, Accidental Degeneracies, and Dual Spin Liquids

We present an extensive overview of the phase diagram, spin-wave excitations, and finite-temperature transitions of the anisotropic-exchange magnets on an ideal nearest-neighbor triangular lattice. We investigate transitions between five principal classical phases of the corresponding model: ferromagnetic, Néel, its dual, and the two stripe phases. Transitions are identified by the spin-wave instabilities and by the Luttinger-Tisza approach. Some of the transitions are direct and others occur via intermediate phases with more complicated forms of ordering. In a portion of the Néel phase, we find spin-wave instabilities to a long-range spiral-like state. In the stripe phases, quantum fluctuations are mostly negligible, leaving the ordered moment nearly saturated even for the $S=1/2$ case. However, for a two-dimensional surface of the full 3D parameter space, the spin-wave spectrum in one of the stripe phases exhibits an enigmatic accidental degeneracy manifested by pseudo-Goldstone modes. As a result, despite the nearly classical ground state, the ordering transition temperature in a wide region of the phase diagram is significantly suppressed from the mean-field expectation. We identify this accidental degeneracy as due to an exact correspondence to an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model with emergent symmetries that naturally lead to the pseudo-Goldstone modes. There are previously studied dualities within the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice that are exposed here in a wider parameter space. One important implication of this correspondence for the $S=1/2$ case is the existence of a region of the spin-liquid phase that is dual to the spin-liquid phase discovered recently by us. We complement our studies by the density-matrix renormalization group of the $S=1/2$ model to confirm some of the duality relations and to verify the existence of the dual spin-liquid phase.

Phase Diagram of YbZnGaO4 in Applied Magnetic Field

Recently, Yb-based triangular lattice antiferromagnets have garnered significant interest as possible quantum spin liquid candidates. One example is YbMgGaO4, which showed many promising spin liquid features, but also possesses a high degree of disorder owing to site-mixing between the non-magnetic cations. To further elucidate the role of chemical disorder and to explore the phase diagram of these materials in applied field, we present neutron scattering and sensitive magnetometry measurements of the closely related compound, YbZnGaO4. Our results suggest a difference in magnetic anisotropy between the two compounds, and we use key observations of the magnetic phase crossover to motivate an exploration of the field- and exchange parameter-dependent phase diagram, providing an expanded view of the available magnetic states in applied field. This enriched map of the phase space serves as a basis to restrict the values of parameters describing the magnetic Hamiltonian with broad application to recently discovered related materials.

Fingerprinting Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet by Excitation Gaps

CeCd$_3$As$_3$ is a rare-earth triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with large inter-layer separation. Our field-dependent heat capacity measurements at dilution fridge temperatures allow us to trace the field-evolution of the spin-excitation gaps throughout the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. The distinct gap evolution places strong constraints on the microscopic pseudo-spin model, which, in return, yields a close {\it quantitative} description of the gap behavior. This analysis provides crucial insights into the nature of the magnetic state of CeCd$_3$As$_3$, with a certainty regarding its stripe order and low-energy model parameters that sets a compelling paradigm for exploring and understanding the rapidly growing family of the rare-earth-based triangular-lattice systems.

Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h-Y(Mn,Al)O3

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO3, a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.
