Pressure-Induced Structure Transitions in Eu Metal to 92 GPa

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out on Eu metal at ambient temperature to pressures as high as 92 GPa (0.92 Mbar). Following the well-known bcc-to-hcp transition at 12 GPa, a mixed phase region is observed from 18 to 66 GPa until finally a single orthorhombic (Pnma) phase persists from 66 to 92 GPa. These results are compared to predictions from density functional theory calculations. Under pressure the relatively large molar volume Vmol of divalent Eu is rapidly diminished, equaling or falling below Vmol(P) for neighboring trivalent lanthanides above 15 GPa. The present results suggest that above 15 GPa Eu is neither divalent nor fully trivalent to pressures as high as 92 GPa.

High pressure structural study of fluoro perovskite CsCdF3 upto 60 GPa: A combined experimental and theoretical study

The structural behaviour of CsCdF3 under pressure is investigated by means of theory and experiment. High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 60 GPa using synchrotron radiation. The cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ crystal symmetry persists throughout this pressure range. Theoretical calculations were carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects. The calculated ground state properties -- the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and elastic constants -- are in good agreement with experimental results. Under ambient conditions, CsCdF3 is an indirect gap insulator with the gap increasing under pressure.

High-pressure structural, elastic and electronic properties of the scintillator host material, KMgF_3

The high-pressure structural behaviour of the fluoroperovskite KMgF_3 is investigated by theory and experiment. Density functional calculations were performed within the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects, as implemented within the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. In situ high-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 40 GPa using synchrotron radiation. We find that the cubic Pm\bar{3}m crystal symmetry persists throughout the pressure range studied. The calculated ground state properties -- the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and elastic constants -- are in good agreement with experimental results. By analyzing the ratio between the bulk and shear modulii, we conclude that KMgF_3 is brittle in nature. Under ambient conditions, KMgF_3 is found to be an indirect gap insulator with the gap increasing under pressure.

Studies on the Weak Itinerant Ferromagnet SrRuO3 under High Pressure to 34 GPa

The dependence of the Curie temperature Tc on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been determined to 17.2 GPa for the weak itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO3 in both polycrystalline and single-crystalline form. Tc is found to decrease under pressure from 162 K to 42.7 K at 17.2 GPa in nearly linear fashion at the rate dTc/dP = -6.8 K/GPa. No superconductivity was found above 4 K in the pressure range 17 to 34 GPa. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction studies to 25.3 GPa reveal no structural phase transition but indicate that the average Ru-O-Ru bond angle passes through a minimum near 15 GPa. The bulk modulus and its pressure derivative were determined to be B =192(3) GPa and B' = 5.0(3), respectively. Parallel ac susceptibility studies on polycrystalline CaRuO3 at 6 and 8 GPa pressure found no evidence for either ferromagnetism or superconductivity above 4 K.

Antiferromagnetism in Pr3In: Singlet/triplet physics with frustration

We present neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data for a single-crystal sample of the cubic (Cu3Au structure) compound Pr3In. This compound is believed to have a singlet (Gamma1) groundstate and a low-lying triplet (Gamma4) excited state. In addition, nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions are frustrated in this structure. Antiferromagnetic order occurs below T_N = 12K with propagation vector (0, 0, 0.5 +/-δ) where δ\approx 1/12. The neutron diffraction results can be approximated with the following model: ferromagnetic sheets from each of the three Pr sites alternate in sign along the propagation direction with a twelve-unit-cell square-wave modulation. The three moments of the unit cell of 1 μ_B magnitude are aligned so as to sum to zero as expected for nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions on a triangle. The magnetic susceptibility indicates that in addition to the antiferromagnetic transition at 12K, there is a transition near 70K below which there is a small (0.005 μ_B) ferromagnetic moment. There is considerable field and sample dependence to these transitions. The specific heat data show almost no anomaly at TN = 12K. This may be a consequence of the induced moment in the Gamma1 singlet, but may also be a sample-dependent effect.

Structural Behavior of Non-Oxide Perovskite Superconductor MgCNi$_{3}$ at Pressures up to 32 GPa

We report the pressure dependence of the structural parameters of the non-oxide perovskite superconductor MgCNi$_{3}$ up to 32 GPa using a diamond anvil cell and synchrotron x-rays at room temperature. The structure of the compound remains in the Pm-3m cubic symmetry throughout the pressure range. The bulk modulus $B_{0}=156.9\pm0.2$GPa with $B_{0}^{\prime}=9.8$obtained by fitting the pressure-volume data is in good agreement with theoretical calculations reported earlier. An anomalous shift of the (111) and (200) lines observed above 9 GPa indicates a possible local short range distortion that is consistent with earlier studies.

Compressibility of $Ce M In_5$ and $Ce_2 M In_8$ (M = Rh, Ir and Co) Compounds

The lattice parameters of the tetragonal compounds Ce$M$In$_{5}$ and Ce$_{2}M$In$_{8}$($M=$Rh, Ir and Co) have been studied as a function of pressure up to 15 GPa using a diamond anvil cell under both hydrostatic and quasihydrostatic conditions at room temperature. The addition of $M$In$_{2}$ layers to the parent CeIn$_{3}$ compound is found to stiffen the lattice as the 2-layer systems (average of bulk modulus values $B_{0}$ is 70.4 GPa) have a larger $B_{0}$ than CeIn$_{3}$ (67 GPa), while the 1-layer systems with the are even stiffer (average of $B_{0}$ is 81.4 GPa). Estimating the hybridization using parameters from tight binding calculations shows that the dominant hybridization is $fp$ in nature between the Ce and In atoms. The values of $V_{pf}$ at the pressure where the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ reaches a maximum is the same for all Ce$M$In$_{5}$ compounds. By plotting the maximum values of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ versus $c/a$ for the studied compounds and Pu-based superconductors, we find a universal $T_{c}$ versus $c/a$ behavior when these quantities are normalized appropriately. These results are consistent with magnetically mediated superconductivity.

Anisotropic Elastic Properties of CeRhIn$_{5}$

The structure of the quasi two dimensional heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ has been investigated as a function of pressure up to 13 GPa using a diamond anvil cell under both hydrostatic and quasihydrostatic conditions at room (T=295 K) and low (T=10 K) temperatures. Complementary resonant ultrasound measurements were performed to obtain the complete elastic moduli. The bulk modulus ($B\approx 78$ GPa) and uniaxial compressibilities ($κ_{a}$ $=3.96\times $ $10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$ and $% κ_{c}$ $=4.22\times $ $10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$) found from pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction are in good agreement with the ultrasound measurements. Unlike doping on the Rh site where $T_{c}$ increases linearly with the ratio of the tetragonal lattice parameters $c/a,$ no such correlation is observed under pressure; instead, a double peaked structure with a local minimum around 4-5 GPa is observed at both room and low temperatures.

Heat capacity studies of Ce and Rh site substitution in the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn_5;: Short-range magnetic interactions and non-Fermi-liquid behavior

In heavy fermion materials superconductivity tends to appear when long range magnetic order is suppressed by chemical doping or applying pressure. Here we report heat capacity measurements on diluted alloyes of the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn_5;. Heat capacity measurements have been performed on CeRh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (y <= 0.10) and Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Rh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (x <= 0.50) in applied fields up to 90 kOe to study the affect of doping and magnetic field on the magnetic ground state. The magnetic phase diagram of CeRh_{0.9}Ir_{0.1}In_5; is consistent with the magnetic structure of CeRhIn_5; being unchanged by Ir doping. Doping of Ir in small concentrations is shown to slightly increase the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_{N} (T_{N}=3.8 K in the undoped sample). La doping which causes disorder on the Ce sublattice is shown to lower T_{N} with no long range order observed above 0.34 K for Ce_{0.50}La_{0.50}RhIn_5;. Measurements on Ce_{0.50}La_{0.50}RhIn_5; show a coexistence of short range magnetic order and non-Fermi-liquid behavior. This dual nature of the Ce 4f-electrons is very similar to the observed results on CeRhIn_5; when long range magnetic order is suppressed at high pressure.

Evolution of the Magnetic Ground State in the Electron-Doped Antiferromagnet CaMnO$_3$

Measurements of the specific heat on the system Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (% $x\leq 0.10$) are reported. Particular attention is paid to the effect that doping the parent compound with electrons by substitution of La for Ca has on the magnetic ground state. The high ($T>40$ K) temperature data reveals that doping decreases $T_{N}$ from 122 K for the undoped sample to 103 K for $x=0.10$. The low temperature ($T<20$ K) heat capacity data is consistent with phase separation. The undoped sample displays a finite density of states and typical antiferromagnetic behavior. The addition of electrons in the $x\leq 0.03$ samples creates local ferromagnetism as evidenced by a decreased intermanl field and the need to add a ferromagnetic component to the heat capacity data for $x=0.03$. Further substitution enhances the ferromagnetism as evidenced by the formation of a long range spin density wave.

Field dependent effective masses in YbAl$_{3}$

We show for the intermediate valence compound YbAl$_{3}$ that the high field (40 $\lesssim B \lesssim$ 60T) effective masses measured by the de Haas-van Alphen experiment for field along the $<111>$ direction are smaller by approximately a factor of two than the low field masses. The field $B^{*} \sim$ 40T for this reduction is much smaller than the Kondo field $B_{K} \sim k_{B}T_{K}/μ_{B}$ ($T_{K}\sim$ 670K) but is comparable to the field $k_{B}T_{coh}/μ_{B}$ where $T_{coh}\sim$ 40K is the temperature for the onset of Fermi liquid coherence. This suggests that the field scale $B^{*}$ does not arise from 4$f$ polarization but is connected with the removal of the anomalies that are known to occur in the Fermi liquid state of this compound.

Short-range Magnetic interactions in the Spin-Ice compound Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Magnetization and susceptibility studies on single crystals of the pyrochlore Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ are reported for the first time. Magnetization isotherms are shown to be qualitatively similar to that predicted by the nearest neighbor spin-ice model. Below the lock-in temperature, $T^{\ast }\simeq 1.97$ K, magnetization is consistent with the locking of spins along [111] directions in a specific two-spins-in, two-spins-out arrangement. Below $T^{\ast}$ the magnetization for $B||[111]$ displays a two step behavior signalling the breaking of the ice rules.

Field-induced magnetic transitions in the quasi-two-dimensional heavy-fermion antiferromagnets Ce_{n}RhIn_{3n+2} (n=1 or 2)

We have measured the field-dependent heat capacity in the tetragonal antiferromagnets CeRhIn$_{5}$ and Ce$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$, both of which have an enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\sim 400$ mJ/mol-Ce K$^{2}$ above $T_{N}$. For $T<T_{N},$ the specific heat data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap in the Fermi surface for CeRhIn$_{5},$ while Ce$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ shows behavior consistent with a simple antiferromagnetic magnon. From these results, the magnetic structure, in a manner similar to the crystal structure, appears more two-dimensional in CeRhIn$_{5}$ than in Ce$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ where only about 12% of the Fermi surface remains ungapped relative to 92% for Ce$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$. When $B||c,$ both compounds behave in a manner expected for heavy fermion systems as both $T_{N}$ and the electronic heat capacity decrease as field is applied. When the field is applied in the tetragonal basal plane ($B||a$), CeRhIn$_{5}$ and Ce$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ have very similar phase diagrams which contain both first- and second-order field-induced magnetic transitions .

Spin Correlations in Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$: a Dipolar Spin Ice System

The pyrochlore material $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ has been suggested to show ``spin ice'' behaviour. We present neutron scattering and specific heat results that establish unambiguously that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ exhibits spin ice correlations at low temperature. Diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is found to be quite well described by a near neighbour spin ice model and very accurately described by a dipolar spin ice model. The heat capacity is well accounted for by the sum of a dipolar spin ice contribution and an expected nuclear spin contribution, known to exist in other Ho$^{3+}$ salts. These results settle the question of the nature of the low temperature spin correlations in $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ for which contradictory claims have been made.
