Near-K-edge single, double, and triple photoionization of C+ ions

Single, double, and triple ionization of the C+ ion by a single photon have been investigated in the energy range 286 to 326 eV around the K-shell single-ionization threshold at an unprecedented level of detail. At energy resolutions as low as 12 meV, corresponding to a resolving power of 24000, natural linewidths of the most prominent resonances could be determined. From the measurement of absolute cross sections, oscillator strengths, Einstein coefficients, multi-electron Auger decay rates and other transition parameters of the main K-shell excitation and decay processes are derived. The cross sections are compared to results of previous theoretical calculations. Mixed levels of agreement are found despite the relatively simple atomic structure of the C+ ion with only 5 electrons. This paper is a follow-up of a previous Letter [Müller et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 013002 (2015)].

Photoionization of metastable heliumlike C4+(1s 2s 3S1) ions: Precision study of intermediate doubly excited states

In a joint experimental and theoretical endeavour, photoionization of metastable C4+(1s 2s 3S1) ions via intermediate levels with hollow, double-K-vacancy configurations 2s2p, 2s3p, 2p3s, 2p3d, 2s4p, 2p4s and 2p4d has been investigated. High-resolution photon-ion merged-beams measurements were carried out with the resolving power reaching up to 25,000 which is sufficient to separate the leading fine-structure components of the 2s2p 3P term. Many-body perturbation theory was employed to determine level-to-level cross sections for K-shell excitation with subsequent autoionization. The resonance energies were calculated with inclusion of electron correlation and radiative contributions. Their uncertainties are estimated to be below $\pm$1 meV. Detailed balance confirms the present photoionization cross-section results by comparison with previous dielectronic-recombination measurements. The high accuracy of the theoretical transition energies together with the present experimental results qualify photoabsorption resonances in heliumlike ions as new, greatly improved energy-reference standards at synchrotron radiation facilities.

Single photoionization of the Zn II ion in the photon energy range 17.5 to 90.0 eV: experiment and theory

Measurements of the single photoionization cross section of Cu-like Zn$^+$ ions are reported in the energy (wavelength) range 17.5 eV (709 Å) to 90 eV (138 Å). The measurements on this {\it trans}-Fe element were performed at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron radiation facility in Berkeley, California at a photon energy resolution of 17 meV using the photon-ion merged-beams end-station. Below 30 eV the spectrum is dominated by excitation autoionizing resonance states. The experimental results are compared with large-scale photoionization cross-section calculations performed using a Dirac-Coulomb $R$-matrix approximation. Comparison are made with previous experimental studies, resonance states are identified and contributions from metastable states of Zn$^+$ determined.

Photoionization of ions with synchrotron radiation: From ions in space to atoms in cages

The photon-ion merged-beams technique for the photoionization of mass/charge selected ionized atoms, molecules and clusters by x-rays from synchrotron radiation sources is introduced. Examples for photoionization of atomic ions are discussed by going from outer-shell ionization of simple few-electron systems to inner-shell ionization of complex many-electron ions. Fundamental ionization mechanisms are elucidated and the importance of the results for applications in astrophysics and plasma physics is pointed out. Finally, the unique capabilities of the photon-ion merged-beams technique for the study of photoabsorption by nanoparticles are demonstrated by the example of endohedral fullerene ions.

Single-photon single ionization of W$^{+}$ ions: experiment and theory

Experimental and theoretical results are reported for photoionization of Ta-like (W$^{+}$) tungsten ions. Absolute cross sections were measured in the energy range 16 to 245 eV employing the photon-ion merged-beam setup at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. Detailed photon-energy scans at 100 meV bandwidth were performed in the 16 to 108 eV range. In addition, the cross section was scanned at 50 meV resolution in regions where fine resonance structures could be observed. Theoretical results were obtained from a Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix approach. Photoionization cross section calculations were performed for singly ionized atomic tungsten ions in their $5s^2 5p^6 5d^4({^5}D)6s \; {^6}{\rm D}_{J}$, $J$=1/2, ground level and the associated excited metastable levels with $J$=3/2, 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2. Since the ion beams used in the experiments must be expected to contain long-lived excited states also from excited configurations, additional cross-section calculations were performed for the second-lowest term, $5d^5 \; ^6{\rm S}_{J}$, $J$=5/2, and for the $^4$F term, $5d^3 6s^2 \; ^4{\rm F}_{J}$, with $J$ = 3/2, 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2. Given the complexity of the electronic structure of W$^+$ the calculations reproduce the main features of the experimental cross section quite well.

Stepwise contraction of the nf Rydberg shells in the 3d photoionization of multiply-charged xenon ions

Triple photoionization of Xe3+, Xe4+ and Xe5+ ions has been studied in the energy range 670-750 eV, including the 3d ionization threshold. The photon-ion merged-beam technique was used at a synchrotron light source to measure the absolute photoionization cross sections. These cross sections exhibit a progressively larger number of sharp resonances as the ion charge state is increased. This clearly visualizes the re-ordering of the $ε$f continuum into a regular series of (bound) Rydberg orbitals as the ionic core becomes more attractive. The energies and strengths of the resonances are extracted from the experimental data and are further analyzed by relativistic atomic-structure calculations.

Valence-shell single photoionization of Chlorine-like K$^{2+}$ ions: Experiment and Theory

The absolute single photoionization cross-section was measured for Cl-like K$^{2+}$ over the photon energy range from 44.2 - 69.7 eV at a constant energy resolution of 0.045 eV. The experiments were performed by merging an ion beam with a beam of synchrotron radiation from an undulator. The ground-state ionization threshold was measured at 0.004 eV energy resolution to be 45.717 $\pm$ 0.030 eV. The measurements are rich in resonance structure due to multiple Rydberg series of transitions to autoionizing states. These series are assigned spectroscopically using the quantum defect method, guided by pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations for the energies and oscillator strengths of transitions to autoionizing states. The experimental results, which include significant contributions from K$^{2+}$ ions initially in metastable states, are in satisfactory agreement with a linear superposition of semi-relativistic R-matrix calculations of photoionization cross sections from these initial states.

Valence-shell single photoionization of Kr$^{+}$ ions: Experiment and Theory

Photoionization of Kr$^+$ ions was studied in the energy range from 23.3 eV to 39.0 eV at a photon energy resolution of 7.5 meV. Absolute measurements were performed by merging beams of Kr$^+$ ions and of monochromatized synchrotron undulator radiation. Photoionization (PI) of this Br-like ion is characterized by multiple Rydberg series of autoionizing resonances superimposed on a direct photoionization continuum. Resonance features observed in the experimental spectra are spectroscopically assigned and their energies and quantum defects tabulated. The high-resolution cross-section measurements are benchmarked against state-of-the-art theoretical cross-section calculations from the Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix method.

State-resolved valence shell photoionization of Be-like ions: experiment and theory

High-resolution photoionization experiments were carried out using beams of Be-like C$^{2+}$, N$^{3+}$, and O$^{4+}$ ions with roughly equal populations of the $^1$S ground-state and the $^3$P$^o$ manifold of metastable components. The energy scales of the experiments are calibrated with uncertainties of 1 to 10 meV depending on photon energy. Resolving powers beyond 20,000 were reached allowing for the separation of contributions from the individual metastable $^3$P$^o_0$, $^3$P$^o_1$, and $^3$P$^o_2$ states. The measured data compare favourably with semi-relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix

Advances in Atomic Data for Neutron-Capture Elements

Neutron(n)-capture elements (atomic number Z>30), which can be produced in planetary nebula (PN) progenitor stars via s-process nucleosynthesis, have been detected in nearly 100 PNe. This demonstrates that nebular spectroscopy is a potentially powerful tool for studying the production and chemical evolution of trans-iron elements. However, significant challenges must be addressed before this goal can be achieved. One of the most substantial hurdles is the lack of atomic data for n-capture elements, particularly that needed to solve for their ionization equilibrium (and hence to convert ionic abundances to elemental abundances). To address this need, we have computed photoionization cross sections and radiative and dielectronic recombination rate coefficients for the first six ions of Se and Kr. The calculations were benchmarked against experimental photoionization cross section measurements. In addition, we computed charge transfer (CT) rate coefficients for ions of six n-capture elements. These efforts will enable the accurate determination of nebular Se and Kr abundances, allowing robust investigations of s-process enrichments in PNe.

Experimental Photoionization Cross-Section Measurements in the Ground and Metastable State Threshold Region of Se+

Absolute photoionization cross-section measurements are reported for Se+ in the photon energy range 18.0-31.0 eV, which spans the ionization thresholds of the 4S_{3/2} ground state and the low-lying 2P_{3/2,1/2} and 2D_{5/2,3/2} metastable states. The measurements were performed using the Advanced Light Source synchrotron radiation facility. Strong photoexcitation-autoionization resonances due to 4p-->nd transitions are seen in the cross-section spectrum and identified with a quantum-defect analysis.

New Atomic Data for Trans-Iron Elements and Their Application to Abundance Determinations in Planetary Nebulae

[Abridged] Investigations of neutron(n)-capture element nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution have largely been based on stellar spectroscopy. However, the recent detection of these elements in several planetary nebulae (PNe) indicates that nebular spectroscopy is a promising new tool for such studies. In PNe, n-capture element abundance determinations reveal details of s-process nucleosynthesis and convective mixing in evolved low-mass stars, as well as the chemical evolution of elements that cannot be detected in stellar spectra. Only one or two ions of a given trans-iron element can typically be detected in individual nebulae. Elemental abundance determinations thus require corrections for the abundances of unobserved ions. Such corrections rely on the availability of atomic data for processes that control the ionization equilibrium of nebulae. Until recently, these data were unknown for virtually all n-capture element ions. For the first five ions of Se, Kr, and Xe -- the three most widely detected n-capture elements in PNe -- we are calculating photoionization cross sections and radiative and dielectronic recombination rate coefficients using the multi-configuration Breit-Pauli atomic structure code AUTOSTRUCTURE. Charge transfer rate coefficients are being determined with a multichannel Landau-Zener code. To calibrate these calculations, we have measured absolute photoionization cross sections of Se and Xe ions at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron radiation facility. These atomic data can be incorporated into photoionization codes, which we will use to derive ionization corrections (hence abundances) for Se, Kr, and Xe in ionized nebulae. These results are critical for honing nebular spectroscopy into a more effective tool for investigating the production and chemical evolution of trans-iron elements in the Universe.

Improved Neutron-Capture Element Abundances in Planetary Nebulae

Spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides the means to investigate s-process enrichments of neutron(n)-capture elements that cannot be detected in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, accurate abundance determinations of these elements present a challenge. Corrections for unobserved ions can be large and uncertain, since in many PNe only one ion of a given n-capture element has been detected. Furthermore, the atomic data governing the ionization balance of these species are not well-determined, inhibiting the derivation of accurate ionization corrections. We present initial results of a program that addresses these challenges. Deep high resolution optical spectroscopy of ~20 PNe has been performed to detect emission lines from trans-iron species including Se, Br, Kr, Rb, and Xe. The optical spectral region provides access to multiple ions of these elements, which reduces the magnitude and importance of uncertainties in the ionization corrections. In addition, experimental and theoretical efforts are providing determinations of the photoionization cross-sections and recombination rate coefficients of Se, Kr, and Xe ions. These new atomic data will make it possible to derive robust ionization corrections for these elements. Together, our observational and atomic data results will enable n-capture element abundances to be determined with unprecedented accuracy in ionized nebulae.

Observation of Spin Fluctuations in a High-Tc Parent Compound Using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report the first observation of soft-x-ray scattering from spin fluctuations in a high-Tc parent compound. An antiferromagnetic charge transfer insulator, CaCuO2, was irradiated by Cu M-edge soft x-rays. Ultra-high resolution measurements of scattered intensity revealed magnon-magnon excitations, due to spin exchange scattering, as low-energy loss features. The process is analogous to optical Raman scattering. The spectra provide the first measurement of the two-magnon excitation energy and the antiferromagnetic exchange parameter in infinite-layer CaCuO2. The results reveal resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering as a novel probe of the spin dynamics in cuprates.
