Magnetic and electronic properties of nitrogen-doped lanthanum sesquioxide La2O3 as predicted from first principles

Using the ab initio FLAPW-GGA method we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of nitrogen-doped non-magnetic sesquioxide La2O3 emphasizing the role of doping sites in the occurrence of d0-magnetism. We predict the magnetization of La2O3 induced by nitrogen impurity in both octahedral and tetrahedral sites of the oxygen sublattice. The most interesting results are that (i) the total magnetic moments (about 1 μB per supercells) are independent of the doping site, whereas (ii) the electronic spectra of these systems differ drastically: La2O3:N with six-fold coordinated nitrogen behaves as a narrow-band-gap magnetic semiconductor, whereas with four-fold coordinated nitrogen is predicted to be a magnetic half-metal. This effect is explained taking into account the differences in N-2pz versus N-2px,y orbital splitting for various doping sites. Thus, the type of the doping site is one of the essential factors for designing of new d0-magnetic materials with promising properties.

Electronic properties of new low-temperature superconductors: 3.3K (Ni2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6) and 2.7K (Ni2As2)(Sr4Sc2O6) from first principles

Based on first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, we have investigated structural and electronic properties of the recently synthesized tetragonal (space group P4/nmm) nickel-based pnictide oxide superconductors: 3.3K (Ni2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6) and 2.7K (Ni2As2)(Sr4Sc2O6). Optimized structural data, electronic bands, total and partial densities of states, and Fermi surface topology have been obtained and discussed in comparison with available experiments and with their Fe-based (Fe2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6) and (Fe2As2)(Sr4Sc2O6) analogs.

Elastic and electronic properties of hexagonal rhenium sub-nitrides Re3N and Re2N in comparison with hcp-Re and wurtzite-like rhenium mononitride ReN

Very recently, two new hexagonal rhenium sub-nitrides Re3N and Re2N, which belong to a rather rare group of known metal-rich (M/N > 1) nitrides of heavy 4d,5d metals, have been successfully synthesized, and their potential technological applications as ultra-incompressible materials have been proposed. In this work we present a detailed ab initio study of novel rhenium sub-nitrides in comparison with hcp-Re and wurtzite-like rhenium mono-nitride ReN, with the purpose to evaluate the trends of the elastic, electronic properties and chemical bonding in the series of these hexagonal systems as a function of the Re/N stoichiometry: Re \rightarrow Re3N \rightarrow Re2N \rightarrow ReN.

Atomic structure and electronic properties of nanotubes of layered iron-based superconductors

The atomic models of nanotubes for layered FeSe, LiFeAs, SrFe2As2, and LnFeAsO - the parent phases of so-called 11, 111, 122, and 1111 groups of newly discovered family of iron-based high temperature superconductors are proposed. On example of SrFe2As2 the electronic properties of predicted nanotubes are examined and discussed in comparison with those for the corresponding single layer and the crystal.

Ab initio study of elastic and electronic properties of cubic thorium pnictides ThPn and Th3Pn4 (Pn = P, As, and Sb)

Full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method with the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation potential was applied for comparative study of elastic and electronic properties of six cubic thorium pnictides ThPn and Th3Pn4, where Pn = P, As, and Sb. Optimized lattice parameters, theoretical density, independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk moduli (B), shear moduli (G), Young's moduli (Y), and Poisson's ratio (ν) were obtained for the first time and analyzed in comparison with available theoretical and experimental data. The electronic band structures, total and partial densities of states for all ThPn and Th3Pn4 phases were examined systematically. Moreover, the inter-atomic bonding pictures in thorium pnictides, as well as the relative stability of ThPn versus Th3Pn4 phases were discussed.

First-Principles Prediction of Novel Magnetic Materials Based on ZrCuSiAs-like Semiconducting Pnictide-Oxides

We assumed that significant enlargement of the functional properties of the family of quaternary ZrCuSiAs-like pnictide-oxides, often called also as 1111 phases, which are known now first of all as parent phases for new FeAs superconductors, may be achieved by replacement of nonmagnetic ions by magnetic ions in semiconducting ZrCuSiAs-like phases. We checked this assumption by means of first-principles FLAPW-GGA calculations using a wide-band-gap semiconductor YZnAsO doped with Mn, Fe, and Co as an example. Our main finding is that substitution of Mn, Fe, and Co for Zn leads to drastic transformations of electronic and magnetic properties of the parent material: as distinct from the non-magnetic YZnAsO, the examined doped phases YZn0.89Mn0.11AsO, YZn0.89Fe0.11AsO, and YZn0.89Co0.11AsO behave as a magnetic semiconductor, a magnetic half-metal or as a magnetic gapless semi-metal, respectively.

Elastic properties of superconducting MAX phases from first principles calculations

Using first-principles density functional calculations, a systematic study on the elastic properties for all known superconducting MAX phases (Nb2SC, Nb2SnC, Nb2AsC, Nb2InC, Mo2GaC and Ti2InC) was performed. As a result, the optimized lattice parameters, independent elastic constants, indicators of elastic anisotropy and brittle/ductile behavior as well as the so-called machinability indexis were calculated. We derived also bulk and shear moduli, Young's moduli, and Poisson's ratio for ideal polycrystalline MAX aggregates. The results obtained were discussed in comparison with available theoretical and experimental data and elastic parameters for other layered superconductors.

Electronic and elastic properties of the new 7.5K superconductor Nb2InC from first principles

First-principles calculations were performed to investigate electronic and elastic properties of the newly discovered 7.5K superconductor: layered Nb2InC. As a result, electronic bands, total and site-projected l- decomposed DOS at the Fermi level, shape of the Fermi surface for Nb2InC were obtained for the first time. Besides, independent elastic constants, bulk modulus, compressibility, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio together with the elastic anisotropy parameters and indicator of brittle/ductile behavior of Nb2InC were evaluated and analyzed in comparison with the available data.

Stability, structural, elastic and electronic properties of RuN polymorphs from first-principles calculations

First-principles calculations through a FLAPW-GGA method for six possible polymorphs of ruthenium mononitride RuN with various atomic coordination numbers CNs: cubic zinc blende (ZB) and cooperite PtS-like structures with CNs = 4; cubic rock-salt (RS), hexagonal WC-like and NiAs-like structures with CNs = 6 and cubic CsCl-like structure with CN = 8 indicate that the most stable is ZB structure, which is much more preferable for RuN than the recently reported RS structure for synthesized RuN samples. The elastic and electronic properties of ZB-RuN were investigated and discussed in comparison with those for RS-RuN polymorph.

Electronic band structure of novel tetragonal BiOCuS as a parent phase for novel layered superconductors

Very recently, the tetragonal BiOCuS was synthesized and declared as a new superconducting system with Fe-oxypnictide - related structure. Here, based on first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, the structural parameters, electronic bands picture, density of states and electron density distribution for BiOCuS are investigated for the first time. Our results show that, as distinct from related metallic-like FeAs systems, BiOCuS phase behaves as an ionic semiconductor with the calculated indirect band gap at about 0.48 eV. The superconductivity for BiOCuS may be achieved exclusively by doping of this phase. Our preliminary results demonstrate that as a result of hole doping, the [CuS] blocks become conducting owing to mixed Cu 3d + S 3p bands located near the Fermi level. For the hole doped BiOCuS the Fermi surface adopts a quasi-two-dimensional character, similarly to FeAs SCs.

Structural and electronic properties of new "122" pnictogen-free superconductor SrPd2Ge2 as compared with SrNi2Ge2 and SrNi2As2: first principles calculations

Very recently the new low-temperature (TC ~ 3K) superconductor (SC) SrPd2Ge2 has been reported. This compound is isostructural with curently intensively studied group of so-called "122" SC's (based on tetragonal AM2Pn2 phases, where A are Sr, Ba; M are d metals and Pn are pnictogens: As or P), but it is pnictogen-free. Here, by means of first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, we have studied the electronic structure of new SC SrPd2Ge2. The band structure, total and partial densities of states and Fermi surface topology for SrPd2Ge2 are evaluated and discussed in comparison with those of isostructural SrNi2Ge2 and SrNi2As2 phases.

Trends in structural and electronic properties for layered SrRu2As2, BaRu2As2, SrRh2As2 and BaRh2As2 from ab initio calculations

Based on first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, we have investigated the systematic trends in structural and electronic properties of a newly discovered group of ThCr2Si2-like arsenides: SrRu2As2, BaRu2As2, SrRh2As2 and BaRh2As2. Our results show that the replacement of an alkaline earth metal (Sr - Ba) and 4d metal (Ru - Rh) leads to various types of anisotropic deformations of the crystal structure caused by strong anisotropy of inter-atomic bonds. The band structure, density of states and Fermi surfaces have been evaluated and discussed. Appreciable changes in the near-Fermi bands and the Fermi surface topology found as going from (Sr,Ba)Ru2As2 to (Sr,Ba)Rh2As2 reflect the growth of the 3D-like type of dispersion for these systems, which is accompanied by an increase in the near-Fermi density of states. The inter-atomic bonding in (Sr,Ba)(Ru,Rh)2As2 phases adopts a complex anisotropic character, where the bonding in [(Ru,Rh)2As2] blocks is of a mixed metallic-ionic-covalent type whereas between adjacent [(Ru,Rh)2As2] blocks and (Sr,Ba) atomic sheets, ionic interactions emerge; thus these systems may be classified as ionic metals.

Electronic properties of superconducting Sr4V2Fe2As2O6 versus Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6

First principle FLAPW-GGA calculations have been performed with the purpose to understand the peculiarities of band structure and Fermi surface topology for recently discovered superconductor: Sr4V2Fe2As2O - in comparison with isostructural phase Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6. Our main finding is that the replacement of Sc on vanadium leads to drastic transformation of electronic, magnetic and conductive properties of these materials: as against non-magnetic Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 which is formed from non-magnetic conducting [Fe2As2] and insulating [Sr4Sc2O6] blocks, Sr4V2Fe2As2O6 consists from non-magnetic conducting [Fe2As2] blocks and [Sr4V2O6] blocks which exhibit magnetic half-metallic properties.

Electronic structure of Ti-doped Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6

First principle FLAPW-GGA calculations have been performed with the purpose to understand the electronic properties for the newly synthesized tetragonal (space group P4/nmm) layered iron arsenide-oxide: Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 doped with titanium. The total and partial densities of states, low-temperature electron specific heat and molar Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility have been obtained and discussed for Sr4ScTiFe2As2O6 in comparison with parent phase Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6. Our results show that the insertion of Ti into Sc sublattice of iron arsenide-oxide phase Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 leads to principal change of its electronic structure; in result the insulating so-called "charge reservoirs', i.e. perovskite-based [Sr4Sc2O6] blocks became conducting. This situation differs essentially from the known picture for all others Fe-As superconductors where the conducting [Fe2As2] blocks are separated by isolating blocks.
