Summary of Working Group 3 of the Neutrino Factory '02 Workshop

The parallel sessions of the working group 3 were devoted to the discussions of short-baseline neutrino physics program at neutrino factories. First, possible studies of parton distribution functions (PDFs), in particular nuclear and polarized PDFs, are discussed in this summary. Second, the extractions of alpha_s from sum rules and structure functions of deep-inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering, higher-order perturbative QCD corrections and estimates of high-twist effects are summarized. Third, the situation of the observed NuTeV sin^2 theta_W anomaly is discussed.

QCD effects to Bjorken unpolarized sum rule for $νN$ deep-inelastic scattering

The possibility of the first measurement of Bjorken unpolarized sum rule for $F_1$ structure function of $νN$ deep-inelastic scattering at Neutrino Factories is commented. The brief summary of various theoretical contributions to this sum rule is given. Using the next-to-leading set of parton distributions functions, we simulate the expected $Q^2$-behavior and emphasize that its measurement can allow to determine the value of the QCD strong coupling constant $α_s$ with reasonable theoretical uncertainty, dominated by the ambiguity in the existing estimates of the twist-4 non-perturbative $1/Q^2$-effect.

Next-to-next-to-leading order fits to CCFR'97 $xF_3$ data and infrared renormalons

We briefly summarize the outcomes of our recent improved fits to the experimental data of CCFR collaboration for $xF_3$ structure function of $νN$ deep-inelastic scattering at the next-to-next-to-leading order. Special attention is paid to the extraction of $α_s(M_Z)$ and the parameter of the infrared renormalon model for $1/Q^2$-correction at different orders of perturbation theory. The results can be of interest for planning similar studies using possible future data of Neutrino Factories.

Bjorken unpolarized and polarized sum rules: comparative analysis of large-N_F expansions

Analytical all-orders results are presented for the one-renormalon-chain contributions to the Bjorken unpolarized sum rule for the F_1 structure function of nu N deep-inelastic scattering in the large-N_F limit. The feasibility of estimating higher order perturbative QCD corrections, by the process of naive nonabelianization (NNA), is studied, in anticipation of measurement of this sum rule at a Neutrino Factory. A comparison is made with similar estimates obtained for the Bjorken polarized sum rule. Application of the NNA procedure to correlators of quark vector and scalar currents, in the euclidean region, is compared with recent analytical results for the O(alpha_s^4 N_F^2) terms.

Neutrino deep-inelastic scattering: new experimental and theoretical results

A review of recent experimental and theoretical studies of characteristics of neutrino deep-inelastic scattering is presented. Special attentition is paid to the determination of $α_s$ and $1/Q^2$ non-perturbative effects from QCD fits to $xF_3$ data at different orders of perturbation theory, with the help of several theoretical methods.

Application of new multiloop QCD input to the analysis of $xF_3$ data

The new theoretical input to the analysis of the experimental data of the CCFR collaboration for $F_3$ structure function of $νN$ deep inelastic scattering is considered. This input comes from the next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to the anomalous dimensions of the Mellin moments of the $F_3$ structure function. The QCD scale $Λ_{\overline{MS}}^{(4)}$ is extracted from higher-twist independent fits. The results obtained demonstrate the minimization of the influence of perturbative QCD contributions to the value of $Λ_{\overline{MS}}^{(4)}$

Light-quark masses and renormalons

A brief review of the problem of the determination of light-quark masses from QCD sum rules for the correlators of scalar and pseudoscalar currents is given. Special attention is paid to the description of the large-$N_f$ results, obtained in collaboration with Broadhurst and Maxwell, for the scalar correlator, and estimates of its higher-order perturbative uncertainties within the renormalon-inspired large-$β_0$ expansion in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme are given. Brief discussion is presented of the results of calculations of higher-order perturbative QCD corrections to the relation between pole and $\overline{\rm MS}$-scheme running-quark masses. Their comparison with the different estimates is also given.

Physics at the front-end of a neutrino factory: a quantitative appraisal

We present a quantitative appraisal of the physics potential for neutrino experiments at the front-end of a muon storage ring. We estimate the forseeable accuracy in the determination of several interesting observables, and explore the consequences of these measurements. We discuss the extraction of individual quark and antiquark densities from polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. In particular we study the implications for the undertanding of the nucleon spin structure. We assess the determination of alpha_s from scaling violation of structure functions, and from sum rules, and the determination of sin^2(theta_W) from elastic nu-e and deep-inelastic nu-p scattering. We then consider the production of charmed hadrons, and the measurement of their absolute branching ratios. We study the polarization of Lambda baryons produced in the current and target fragmentation regions. Finally, we discuss the sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Calculation of the K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing parameter via the QCD sum rules at finite energies

The QCD finite energy sum rules method is used to show that the parameter of the K^0-\bar{K}_0 mixing \hat{B} is mainly determined by the value of g m_s< \bar{d} G_{μν} σ_{μν} d > and the vacuum expectation values of four-quark operators. Assuming the hypothesis of vacuum dominance and/or unitarity symmetry to estimate latter, it is found that \hat{B}=1.2\pm 0.1. (The updated (March 2001) prediction reads \hat{B} = 1.0 +- 0.1 (for more details, see Comments after the main text).

Renormalons and multiloop estimates in scalar correlators, Higgs decay and quark-mass sum rules

The single renormalon-chain contribution to the correlator of scalar currents in QCD is calculated in the $\bar{MS}$-scheme in the limit of a large $N_f$. We find that in the factorial growth of the coefficients due to renormalons takes over almost immediatelly in the euclidean region. The essential differences between the large-order growth of coefficients in the scalar case, and in the vector case are analysed. In the timelike region a stabilization of the perturbative series for the imaginary part, with $n$-loop behaviour $S_n/[\log(s/Λ^2)]^{n-1}$, where $S_n$ is essential constant for $n\le{6}$, is observed. Only for $n\ge{7}$ does one discern the factorial growth and alternations of sign. Out all-order results are used to scrutinize the performance of multiloop estimates, within the ``naive nonabelianization'' procedure, and the effective charges approach. The asymtotic behaviour of perturbative coefficients, in both large $N_f$ and large $N_c$ limits, is analysed. A contour-improved resummation technique in the time-like region is developed. Some subtleties of scheme-dependence are illustrated using results in the $\bar{MS}$ and $V$-schemes. The all-order series under investigation are summed up with the help of the Borel resummation method. The results obtained are relevant to the analysis of the theoretical uncertainties in the 4-loop extractions of the running and invariant $s$-quark masses from QCD sum rules, and in calculations of the Higgs boson decay width into a quark-antiquark pair.

The interplay between perturbative QCD and power corrections: the description of scaling or automodelling limit violation in deep-inelastic scattering

The summary of the results of our next-to-next-to-leading fits of Tevatron experimental data for $xF_3$ structure function of the $νN$ deep-inelastic scattering is given. The special attention is paid to the extraction of twist-4 contributions and demonstration of the interplay between these effects and higher-order perturbative QCD corrections. The factorization and renormalization scale uncertainties of the results obtained are analysed

Higher twists and $α_s(M_Z)$ extractions from the NNLO QCD analysis of the CCFR data for $xF_3$ structure function

A detailed next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD analysis is performed for the experimental data of the CCFR collaboration for the $xF_3$ structure function. Theoretical ambiguities of the results of our NNLO fits are estimated by application of the Padé resummation technique and variation of the factorization and renormalization scales. The NNLO and N$^3$LO $α_s(Q^2)$ $\bar{MS}$-matching conditions are used. In the process of the fits we are taking into account of twist-4 $1/Q^2$-terms. We found that the amplitude of the $x$-shape of the twist-4 factor is decreasing in NLO and NNLO, though some remaining twist-4 structure seems to retain in NNLO in the case when statistical uncertainties are taken into account. The question of the stability of these results to the application of the [0/2] Padé resummation technique is considered. Our NNLO results for $α_s(M_Z)$ values, extracted from the CCFR $xF_3$ data, are $α_s(M_Z)=0.118 \pm 0.002 (stat) \pm 0.005 (syst)\pm 0.003 (theory)$ provided the twist-4 contributions are fixed through the infrared renormalon model and $α_s(M_Z)=0.121^{+0.007}_{0.010}(stat)\pm 0.005 (syst) \pm 0.003 (theory)$ provided the twist-4 terms are considered as free parameters.

Adler function from R^{e^+e^-} measurements: experiments vs QCD theory

An experimental motivated QCD analysis of the behaviour of the Adler D-function in the Euclidian region is described. It is stressed that by taking account of $b$-quark mass-dependent $α_s^2$-effects one obtains better agreement between theoretical predictions and experimentally motivated behaviour of the D-function at large Euclidian momentum transfer. A more detailed analysis of QCD predictions, including information on quark and gluon condensates, requires more precise data on $e^+e^-\to{hadrons}$, particularly in the region $E<M_{J/Ψ}$ and $M_{J/Ψ}<E<3.6 GeV$. use of experimental determination of the D-function to test the generalized Crewther relation is outlined.

The NLO DGLAP extraction of alpha_s and higher twist terms from CCFR xF_3 and F_2 structure functions data: results and scale dependence

We perform a detailed NLO analysis of the combined CCFR xF_3 and F_2 structure functions data and extract the value of alpha_s, parameters of distributions and higher-twist (HT) terms using a direct solution of the DGLAP equation. The value of alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1222\pm 0.0048 (exp) \pm 0.0026 (theor) is obtained. Our results has a larger central value and errors than the original one of the CCFR collaboration due to model independent parameterization of the HT contributions. The dependence of HT contributions on the QCD renormalization scale is studied.

The NNLO QCD analysis of the CCFR data for xF_3: is there still the room for the twist-4 terms?

The results of the more detailed NNLO QCD analysis of the CCFR data for $xF_3$ SF are presented. The factorization scale uncertainties are analysed. The NNLO results for $alpha_s(M_Z)$ and twist-4 contributions are obtained. Despite the fact that the amplitude of the $x$-shape of the twist-4 factor is consequently decreasing at the NLO and NNLO, our new QCD analysis seems to reveal the remaining twist-4 structure at the NNLO level. The definite N$^3$LO uncertainties are fixed using the [0/2] Padé resummation technique.
