High frequency magnetic permeability of nanocomposite film

The high frequency magnetic permeability of nanocomposite film consisting of the single-domain spherical ferromagnetic particles in the dielectric matrix is studied. The permeability is assumed to be determined by rotation of the ferromagnetic inclusion magnetic moments around equilibrium direction in AC magnetic field. The composite is modeled by a cubic array of ferromagnetic particles. The magnetic permeability tensor is calculated by solving the Landau-Lifshits-Gilbert equation accounting for the dipole interaction of magnetic particles. The permeability tensor components are found as functions of the frequency, temperature, ferromagnetic inclusions density and magnetic anisotropy. The obtained results show that nanocomposite films could have rather high value of magnetic permeability in the microwave range.

Finger patterns produced by thermomagnetic instability in superconductors

A linear analysis of thermal diffusion and Maxwell equations is applied to study the thermomagnetic instability in a type-II superconducting slab. It is shown that the instability can lead to formation of spatially nonuniform distributions of magnetic field and temperature. The distributions acquire a finger structure with fingers perpendicular to the screening current direction. We derive the criterion for the instability, and estimate its build-up time and characteristic finger width. The fingering instability emerges when the background electric field is larger than a threshold field, $E>E_c$, and the applied magnetic field exceeds a value $H_fing \propto 1/\sqrt{E}$. Numerical simulations support the analytical results, and allow to follow the development of the fingering instability beyond the linear regime. The fingering instability may be responsible for the nucleation of dendritic flux patterns observed in superconducting films using magneto-optical imaging.

Magnetization reversal process and nonlinear magneto-impedance in Cu/NiFe and Nb/NiFe composite wires

The magnetization reversal of Cu/NiFe and Nb/NiFe composite wires carrying AC current is studied. The frequency spectrum of a voltage induced in a pick-up coil wound around the wire is analyzed. The frequency spectrum is shown to consist of even harmonics within a wide range of AC current amplitudes and longitudinal DC magnetic fields. The strong dependencies of the harmonic amplitudes on the DC field are found. The results obtained may be of importance for the design of weak magnetic field sensors.

Spin-dependent transport in phase-separated manganites

Starting from the assumption that ferromagnetically correlated regions exist in manganites even in the absence of long-range magnetic order, we construct a model of charge transfer due to the spin-dependent tunnelling of charge carriers between such regions. This model allows us to analyze the temperature and magnetic field dependence of resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetic susceptibility of phase-separated manganites in the temperature range corresponding to non-metallic behavior. The comparison of theoretical and experimental results reveals the main characteristics of the phase-separated state.

Anisotropic flux creep in Bi2212:Pb single crystal in crossed magnetic fields

An experimental study of magnetic flux penetration under crossed magnetic fields in Bi2212:Pb single crystals is performed by the magneto-optic technique. The anisotropy of the flux creep rate induced by the in-plane magnetic field is observed at $T<54\pm 2$ K. This observation confirms the existence of the three-dimensional flux line structure in Bi2212:Pb at low temperatures. An asymmetry of the flux relaxation with respect to the direction of the in-plane field is found. This effect can be attributed to the influence of the laminar structure on the pinning in Bi2212:Pb single crystals.

Magnetic polarons in doped 1D antiferromagnetic chain

The structure of magnetic polarons (ferrons) is studied for an 1D antiferromagnetic chain doped by non-magnetic donor impurities. The conduction electrons are assumed to be bound by the impurities. Such a chain can be described as a set of ferrons at the antiferromagnetic background. We found that two types of ferrons can exist in the system. The ground state of the chain corresponds to the ferrons with the sizes of the order of the localization length of the electron near the impurity. The ferrons of the second type produce a more extended distortion of spins in the chain. They are stable within a finite domain of the system parameters and can be treated as excitations above the ground state. The ferrons in the excited states can appear in pairs only. The energy of the excited states decreases with the growth in density of impurities. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of an attractive interaction between ferrons.

Macroturbulent Instability of the Flux Line Lattice in Anisotropic Superconductors

A theory of the macroturbulent instability in the system containing vortices of opposite directions (vortices and antivortices) in hard superconductors is proposed. The origin of the instability is connected with the anisotropy of the current capability in the sample plane. The anisotropy results in the appearance of tangential discontinuity of the hydrodynamic velocity of vortex and antivortex motion near the front of magnetization reversal. As is known from the classical hydrodynamics of viscous fluids, this leads to the turbulization of flow. The examination is performed on the basis of the anisotropic power-law current-voltage characteristics. The dispersion equation for the dependence of the instability increment on the wave number of perturbation is obtained, solved, and analyzed analytically and numerically. It is shown that the instability can be observed even at relatively weak anisotropy.

Direct Demonstration of the Anisotropic Origin of the Macroturbulent Instability in Type-II Superconductors

The physical nature of the macroturbulence in the vortex matter in YBCO superconductors is verified by means of magnetooptic study of the instability in a single crystal prepared specially for this purpose. The instability develops near those sample edges where the oppositely directed flow of vortices and antivortices, guided by twin boundaries, is characterized by the discontinuity of the tangential component of the hydrodynamic velocity. This fact directly indicates that the macroturbulence is analogous to the instability of fluid flow at a surface of a tangential velocity discontinuity in classical hydrodynamics, and is related to the anisotropic flux motion in the superconductor.

Strong 3D correlations in vortex system of Bi2212:Pb

The experimental study of magnetic flux penetration under crossed magnetic fields in Bi2212:Pb single crystal performed by magnetooptic technique (MO) reveals remarkable field penetration pattern alteration (flux configuration change) and superconducting current anisotropy enhancement by the in-plane field. The anisotropy increases with the temperature rise up to $T_m = 54 \pm 2 K$. At $T = T_m$ an abrupt change in the flux behavior is found; the correlation between the in-plane magnetic field and the out-of-plane magnetic flux penetration disappears. No correlation is observed for $T > T_m$. The transition temperature $T_m$ does not depend on the magnetic field strength. The observed flux penetration anisotropy is considered as an evidence of a strong 3D - correlation between pancake vortices in different CuO planes at $T < T_m$. This enables understanding of a remarkable pinning observed in Bi2212:Pb at low temperatures.

Nanoscale phase separation in manganites

We study the possibility of nanoscale phase separation in manganites in the framework of the double exchange model. The homogeneous canted state of this model is proved to be unstable toward the formation of small ferromagnetic droplets inside an antiferromagnetic insulating matrix. For the ferromagnetic polaronic state we analyze the quantum effects related to the tails of electronic wave function and a possibility of electron hopping in the antiferromagnetic background. We find that these effects lead to the formation of the threshold for the polaronic state.

Vortex lattice in presence of a tunable periodic pinning potential

The vortex patterns stabilized by the square array of artificial pinning sites with a tunable pinning strength are studied by using a phenomenological approach in the London limit. The transitions between pinned and deformed triangular lattices are analyzed as a function of the amplitude of the vortex-pinning site interaction and the characteristic length-scale of this interaction. The critical current and different phases of vortex lattice are studied in presence of external transport current.

Mesoscopic Superconducting Cylinders: Phase Transitions, Phase Diagrams and Magnetization

Superconducting state in mesoscopic cylinder placed in the external magnetic field is analyzed at general de Gennes boundary condition for the order parameter. The lower and the surface critical fields of the cylinder are calculated at different values of de Gennes "extrapolation length" $b$. For the case of standard boundary condition (corresponding to $b\to \infty $) we use a variational method to calculate the phase transitions between different superconducting states. Based on the trial function for the order parameter, we find an approximate solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the Meissner, the single-vortex, and the giant-vortex states. The magnetization curves of thin cylinders are calculated.

Hydrodynamic Instability of the Flux-antiflux Interface in Type-II Superconductors

The macroturbulence instability observed in fluxline systems during remagnetization of superconductors is explained. It is shown that when a region with flux is invaded by antiflux the interface can become unstable if there is a relative tangential flux motion. This condition occurs at the interface when the viscosity is anisotropic, e.g., due to flux guiding by twin boundaries in crystals. The phenomenon is similar to the instability of the tangential discontinuity in classical hydrodynamics. The obtained results are supported by magneto-optical observations of flux distribution on the surface of a YBCO single crystal with twins.

Approximate Ginzburg-Landau solution for the regular flux-line lattice. Circular cell method

A variational model is proposed to describe the magnetic properties of type-II superconductors in the entire field range between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ for any values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ>1/\sqrt{2}$. The hexagonal unit cell of the triangular flux-line lattice is replaced by a circle of the same area, and the periodic solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau equations within this cell are approximated by rotationally symmetric solutions. The Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved by a trial function for the order parameter. The calculated spatial distributions of the order parameter and the magnetic field are compared with the corresponding distributions obtained by numerical solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The comparison reveals good agreement with an accuracy of a few percent for all $κ$ values exceeding $κ\approx 1$. The model can be extended to anisotropic superconductors when the vortices are directed along one of the principal axes. The reversible magnetization curve is calculated and an analytical formula for the magnetization is proposed. At low fields, the theory reduces to the London approach at $κ\gg 1$, provided that the exact value of $H_{c1}$ is used. At high fields, our model reproduces the main features of the well-known Abrikosov theory. The magnetic field dependences of the reversible magnetization found numerically and by our variational method practically coincide. The model also refines the limits of some approximations which have been widely used. The calculated magnetization curves are in a good agreement with experimental data on high-T$_c$ superconductors.

Variational method to study vortex matter in mesoscopic superconductors

A simple variational model is proposed to analyze the superconducting state in long cylindrical type-II superconductor placed in the external magnetic field. In the framework of this model, it is possible to solve the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the states with axially symmetric distributions of the order parameter. Phase transitions between different superconducting states are studied in the presence of external magnetic field and an equilibrium phase diagram of thin cylinder is obtained. The lower critical field of the cylindrical type-II superconductor with arbitrary values of radius and Ginzburg-Landau parameter is found. The field dependence of the magnetization of thin cylinder, which can carry several magnetic flux quanta, is calculated.

First integrals of Ginzburg-Landau equations and stability criteria for vortex-free state in unconventional superconductors

The first integrals of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for a vortex-free state of superconductors with different mixed symmetries of the order parameter are found. The general boundary conditions for the order parameter at the ideal interface between the superconductor and vacuum are derived. Based on these integrals and boundary conditions, we analyze the stability criteria for vortex-free state in unconventional superconductors. The threshold field above which the Abrikosov vortices can enter the superconductor is found to be higher or equal to the thermodynamic critical field for all states under study.

Resistivity and 1/f Noise in Non-Metallic Phase Separated Manganites

A simple model is proposed to calculate resistivity, magnetoresistance, and noise spectrum in non-metallic phase-separated manganites containing small metallic droplets (magnetic polarons). The system is taken to be far from the percolation transition into a metallic state. It is assumed that the charge transfer occurs due to electron tunneling from one droplet to another through the insulating medium. As a result of this tunneling, the droplets acquire or lose extra electrons forming metastable two-electron and empty states. In the framework of this model, explicit expressions for dc conductivity and noise power of the system are derived. It is shown that the noise spectrum has 1/f form in the low-frequency range.
