Improved Measurements of Nonlinear Integrable Optics Invariants at IOTA

Nonlinear integrable optics (NIO) are a promising novel approach at improving the stability of high intensity beams. Implementations of NIO based on specialized magnetic elements are being tested at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab. One method of verifying proper implementation of these solutions is by measuring the analytic invariants predicted by theory. The initial measurements of nonlinear invariants were performed during IOTA run in 2019/20, however the covid-19 pandemic prevented the full-scale experimental program from being completed. Several important improvements were implemented in IOTA for the 2022/23 run, including the operation at higher beam energy of 150 MeV, improved optics control, and chromaticity correction. This report presents the results of improved measurements of nonlinear invariants.

Characterization of Octuopole Elements for IOTA

The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) is a research storage ring constructed and operated at Fermilab to demonstrate the advantages of nonlinear integrable lattices. One of the nonlinear lattice configurations with one integral of motion is based on a string of short octupoles. The results of the individual magnets characterizations, which were necessary to determine their multipole composition and magnetic centers, are presented. This information was used to select and align the best subset of octupoles for the IOTA run 4.

Optical Stochastic Cooling Experiment At The Fermilab IOTA Ring

Beam cooling enables an increase of peak and average luminosities and significantly expands the discovery potential of colliders; therefore, it is an indispensable component of any modern design. Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is a high-bandwidth, beam-cooling technique that will advance the present state-of-the-art, stochastic cooling rate by more than three orders of magnitude. It is an enabling technology for next-generation, discovery-science machines at the energy and intensity frontiers including hadron and electron-ion colliders. This paper presents the status of our experimental effort to demonstrate OSC at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) ring, a testbed for advanced beam-physics concepts and technologies that is currently being commissioned at Fermilab. Our recent efforts are centered on the development of an integrated design that is prepared for final engineering and fabrication. The paper also presents a comparison of theoretical calculations and numerical simulations of the pickup-undulator radiation and its interaction with electrons in the kicker-undulator.

Study of the process $e^+e^-\to p\bar{p}$ in the c.m. energy range from threshold to 2 GeV with the CMD-3 detector

Using a data sample of 6.8 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider we select about 2700 events of the $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p}$ process and measure its cross section at 12 energy ponts with about 6\% systematic uncertainty. From the angular distribution of produced nucleons we obtain the ratio $|G_{E}/G_{M}| = 1.49 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.30$.

Search for the process $e^+e^-\to η^\prime(958)$ with the CMD-3 detector

A search for the process $\epem\to η^\prime(958)$ in the $\pipiη\to\pipiγγ$ final state has been performed with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 2.69 pb$^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy \Ecm = 957.68 MeV we set an upper limit for the product of electronic width and branching fractions $Γ_{η^\prime(958)\to\epem}\cdot\BR_{η^\prime(958)\to\pipiη}\cdot\BR_{η\toγγ}<0.00041$ eV at 90\% C.L.

Study of the process $e^+e^-\toηγ$ in the center-of-mass energy range 1.07--2.00 GeV

The $e^+e^-\toηγ$ cross section has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range 1.07--2.00 GeV using the decay mode $η\to 3π^0$, $π^0\to γγ$. The analysis is based on 36 pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured cross section of about 35 pb at 1.5 GeV is explained by decays of the $ρ(1450)$ and $ϕ(1680)$ resonances.

Study of e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV with SND

The cross section for the process e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma has been measured in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV. The experiment has been performed at the e+e- collider VEPP-2000 with the SND detector. The measured e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section above 1.4 GeV is the most accurate to date. Below 1.4 GeV our data are in good agreement with the previous SND and CMD-2 measurements. Data on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section are well described by the VMD model with two excited rho-like states. From the measured cross section we have extracted the gamma^* --> omega pi0 transition form factor. It has been found that the VDM model cannot describe simultaneously our data and data obtained from the omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- decay. We have also tested CVC hypothesis comparing our results on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section with data on the tau- --> omega pi- nu_{tau} decay.
