Approximating random quantum optimization problems

We report a cluster of results regarding the difficulty of finding approximate ground states to typical instances of the quantum satisfiability problem $k$-QSAT on large random graphs. As an approximation strategy, we optimize the solution space over `classical' product states, which in turn introduces a novel autonomous classical optimization problem, PSAT, over a space of continuous degrees of freedom rather than discrete bits. Our central results are: (i) The derivation of a set of bounds and approximations in various limits of the problem, several of which we believe may be amenable to a rigorous treatment. (ii) A demonstration that an approximation based on a greedy algorithm borrowed from the study of frustrated magnetism performs well over a wide range in parameter space, and its performance reflects structure of the solution space of random $k$-QSAT. Simulated annealing exhibits metastability in similar `hard' regions of parameter space. (iii) A generalization of belief propagation algorithms introduced for classical problems to the case of continuous spins. This yields both approximate solutions, as well as insights into the free energy `landscape' of the approximation problem, including a so-called dynamical transition near the satisfiability threshold. Taken together, these results allow us to elucidate the phase diagram of random $k$-QSAT in a two-dimensional energy-density--clause-density space.

Effective spin model for the spin-liquid phase of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice

We show that the spin liquid phase of the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice can be described by a pure spin model. This is based on a high-order strong coupling expansion (up to order 12) using perturbative continuous unitary transformations. The resulting spin model is consistent with a transition from three-sublattice long-range magnetic order to an insulating spin liquid phase, and with a jump of the double occupancy at the transition. Exact diagonalizations of both models show that the effective spin model is quantitatively accurate well into the spin liquid phase, and a comparison with the Gutzwiller projected Fermi sea suggests a gapless spectrum and a spinon Fermi surface.

Effect of Rare Fluctuations on the Thermalization of Isolated Quantum Systems

We consider the question of thermalization for isolated quantum systems after a sudden parameter change, a so-called quantum quench. In part icular we investigate the pre-requisites for thermalization focusing on the statistical properties of the time-averaged density matrix and o f the expectation values of observables in the final eigenstates. We find that eigenstates, which are rare compared to the typical ones sampled by the micro-canonical distribution, are responsible for the absence of thermalization of some infinite integrable models and play an important role for some non-integrable systems of finite size, such as the Bose-Hubbard model. We stress the importance of finite size effects for the thermalization of isolated quantum systems and discuss two alternative scenarios for thermalization, as well as ways to prune down the correct one.

Emergent multipolar spin correlations in a fluctuating spiral - The frustrated ferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field

We present the phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg J_1-J_2 chain in a magnetic field, obtained by large scale exact diagonalizations and density matrix renormalization group simulations. A vector chirally ordered state, metamagnetic behavior and a sequence of spin-multipolar Luttinger liquid phases up to hexadecupolar kind are found. We provide numerical evidence for a locking mechanism, which can drive spiral states towards spin-multipolar phases, such as quadrupolar or octupolar phases. Our results also shed light on previously discovered spin-multipolar phases in two-dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum magnets in a magnetic field.

Approximate eigenvalue determination of geometrically frustrated magnetic molecules

Geometrically frustrated magnetic molecules have attracted a lot of interest in the field of molecular magnetism as well as frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets. In this article we demonstrate how an approximate diagonalization scheme can be used in order to obtain thermodynamic and spectroscopic information about frustrated magnetic molecules. To this end we theoretically investigate an antiferromagnetically coupled spin system with cuboctahedral structure modeled by an isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian.

Dynamical dimer correlations at bipartite and non-bipartite Rokhsar-Kivelson points

We determine the dynamical dimer correlation functions of quantum dimer models at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point on the bipartite square and cubic lattices and the non-bipartite triangular lattice. Based on an algorithmic idea by Henley, we simulate a stochastic process of classical dimer configurations in continuous time and perform a stochastic analytical continuation to obtain the dynamical correlations in momentum space and the frequency domain. This approach allows us to observe directly the dispersion relations and the evolution of the spectral intensity within the Brillouin zone beyond the single-mode approximation. On the square lattice, we confirm analytical predictions related to soft modes close to the wavevectors (pi,pi) and (pi,0) and further reveal the existence of shadow bands close to the wavevector (0,0). On the cubic lattice the spectrum is also gapless but here only a single soft mode at (pi,pi,pi) is found, as predicted by the single mode approximation. The soft mode has a quadratic dispersion at very long wavelength, but crosses over to a linear behavior very rapidly. We believe this to be the remnant of the linearly dispersing "photon" of the Coulomb phase. Finally the triangular lattice is in a fully gapped liquid phase where the bottom of the dimer spectrum exhibits a rich structure. At the M point the gap is minimal and the spectral response is dominated by a sharp quasiparticle peak. On the other hand, at the X point the spectral function is much broader. We sketch a possible explanation based on the crossing of the coherent dimer excitations into the two-vison continuum.

The ALPS project release 1.3: open source software for strongly correlated systems

We present release 1.3 of the ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project, an international open source software project to develop libraries and application programs for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum lattice models such as quantum magnets, lattice bosons, and strongly correlated fermion systems. Development is centered on common XML and binary data formats, on libraries to simplify and speed up code development, and on full-featured simulation programs. The programs enable non-experts to start carrying out numerical simulations by providing basic implementations of the important algorithms for quantum lattice models: classical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) using non-local updates, extended ensemble simulations, exact and full diagonalization (ED), as well as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Changes in the new release include a DMRG program for interacting models, support for translation symmetries in the diagonalization programs, the ability to define custom measurement operators, and support for inhomogeneous systems, such as lattice models with traps. The software is available from our web server at http://alps.comp-phys.org/ .

Static impurities in the S=3/2 kagome lattice

We consider the effects of doping the S=3/2 kagome lattice with static, nonmagnetic impurities. By exact diagonalization calculations on small clusters we deduce the local spin correlations and magnetization distribution around a vacancy. As in the S=1/2 kagome lattice, in the vicinity of the impurity we find an extended region where the spin correlations are altered as a consequence of frustation relief, and no indications for the formation of local moments. We discuss the implications of our results for local probe measurements on S=3/2 kagome materials.

Single-particle versus pair condensation of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping

We investigate the consequences of correlated hopping on the ground state properties of hard-core bosons on a square lattice as revealed by extensive exact diagonalizations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. While for non interacting hard-core bosons the effective attraction induced by the correlated hopping leads to phase separation at low density, we show that a modest nearest-neighbor repulsion suppresses phase separation, leading to a remarkable low-density pairing phase with no single particle Bose-Einstein condensation but long-range two-particle correlations, signaling a condensation of pairs. We also explain why the unusual properties of the pairing phase are a real challenge for standard one-worm quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Plaquette valence bond solid in the frustrated Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice

Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-dimer correlation functions, dimer structure factors and plaquette-plaquette correlation functions provides striking evidence for the presence of a plaquette valence bond solid order in part of the magnetically disordered region.

The quadrupolar phases of the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalizations and SU(3) flavour theory, we have precisely mapped out the phase diagram of the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in a magnetic field, with emphasis on the quadrupolar phases and their excitations. In particular, we show that ferroquadrupolar order can coexist with short-range helical magnetic order, and that the antiferroquadrupolar phase is characterized by a remarkable 2/3 magnetization plateau, in which one site per triangle retains quadrupolar order while the other two are polarized along the field. Implications for actual S=1 magnets are discussed.

Exotic phenomena in doped quantum magnets

We investigate the properties of the two-dimensional frustrated quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice, especially at infinitesimal doping. We find that next nearest neighbor (N.N.) J2 and next-next N.N. J3 interactions together destroy the antiferromagnetic long range order and stabilize a quantum disordered valence bond crystalline plaquette phase. A static vacancy or a dynamic hole doped into this phase liberates a spinon. From the profile of the spinon wavefunction around the (static) vacancy we identify an intermediate behavior between complete deconfinement (behavior seen in the kagome lattice) and strong confinement (behavior seen in the checkerboard lattice) with the emergence of two length scales, a spinon confinement length larger than the magnetic correlation length. When a finite hole hopping is introduced, this behavior translates into an extended (mobile) spinon-holon boundstate with a very small quasiparticle weight. These features provide clear evidence for a nearby "deconfined critical point" in a doped microscopic model. Finally, we give arguments in favor of superconducting properties of the doped plaquette phase.

Frustrated three-leg spin tubes: from spin 1/2 with chirality to spin 3/2

Motivated by the recent discovery of the spin tube [(CuCl$_2$tachH)$_3$Cl]Cl$_2$, we investigate the properties of a frustrated three-leg spin tube with antiferromagnetic intra-ring and inter-ring couplings. We pay special attention to the evolution of the properties from weak to strong inter-ring coupling and show on the basis of extensive density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition between a dimerized gapped phase at weak coupling that can be described by the usual spin-chirality model and a gapless critical phase at strong coupling that can be described by an effective spin-3/2 model. We also show that there is a magnetization plateau at 1/3 in the gapped phase and slightly beyond. The implications for [(CuCl$_2$tachH)$_3$Cl]Cl$_2$ are discussed, with the conclusion that this system behaves essentially as a spin-3/2 chain.

Two Step Restoration of SU(2) Symmetry in a Frustrated Ring-Exchange Magnet

We demonstrate the existence of a spin-nematic, moment-free phase in a quantum four-spin ring exchange model on the square lattice. This unusual quantum state is created by the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations which lead to a partial restoration of SU(2) symmetry when going from a four-sublattice orthogonal biaxial Neel order to this exotic uniaxial magnet. A further increase of frustration drives a transition to a fully gapped SU(2) symmetric valence bond crystal.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Spin-Charge Separation in Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnets

The dynamics of a mobile hole in two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets is investigated by exact diagonalization techniques. Our results provide evidence for spin-charge separation upon doping the kagome lattice, a prototype of a spin liquid. In contrast, in the checkerboard lattice, a symmetry broken Valence Bond Crystal, a small quasi-particle peak is seen for some crystal momenta, a finding interpreted as a restoration of weak holon-spinon confinement.

d-Mott phases in one and two dimensions

We use exact diagonalization to determine the spectrum of reduced Hamiltonians based on renormalization group flows to strong coupling. For the half-filled two-leg Hubbard ladder we reproduce the known insulating d-Mott groundstate with spin and charge gaps. For the saddle point regions of the two-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling we find a crossover to a similar strong coupling state, which truncates the Fermi surface near the saddle points. At lower scales d-wave superconductivity appears on the remaining Fermi surface.
