All-electrical production of spin-polarized currents in carbon nanotubes: Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We study the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the quantum transport of carbon nanotubes with arbitrary chiralities. For certain spin directions, we find a strong spin-polarized electrical current that depends on the diameter of the tube, the length of the Rashba region and on the tube chirality. Predictions for the spin-dependent conductances are presented for different families of achiral and chiral tubes. We have found that different symmetries acting on spatial and spin variables have to be considered in order to explain the relations between spin-resolved conductances in carbon nanotubes. These symmetries are more general than those employed in planar graphene systems. Our results indicate the possibility of having stable spin-polarized electrical currents in absence of external magnetic fields or magnetic impurities in carbon nanotubes.

Symmetries of quantum transport with Rashba spin-orbit: Graphene spintronics

The lack of some spatial symmetries in planar devices with Rashba spin-orbit interaction opens the possibility of producing spin polarized electrical currents in absence of external magnetic field or magnetic impurities. We study how the direction of the spin polarization of the current is related to spatial symmetries of the device. As an example of these relations we study numerically the spin-resolved current in graphene nanoribbons. Different configurations are explored and analyzed to demonstrate that graphene nanoflakes may be used as excellent spintronic devices in an all-electrical setup.

Fano resonances in hexagonal zigzag graphene rings under external magnetic flux

We study transport properties of hexagonal zigzag graphene quantum rings connected to semi-infinite nanoribbons. Open two-fold symmetric structures support localized states that can be traced back to those existing in the isolated six-fold symmetric rings. Using a tight-binding Hamiltonian within the Green's function formalism, we show that an external magnetic field promotes these localized states to Fano resonances with robust signatures in transport. Local density of states and current distributions of the resonant states are calculated as a function of the magnetic flux intensity. For structures on corrugated substrates we analyze the effect of strain by including an out-of-plane centro-symmetric deformation in the model. We show that small strains shift the resonance positions without further modifications, while high strains introduce new ones.

Gaussian deformations in graphene ribbons: flowers and confinement

The coupling of geometrical and electronic properties is a promising venue to engineer conduction properties in graphene. Confinement added to strain allows for interplay of different transport mechanisms with potential device applications. To investigate strain signatures on transport in confined geometries, we focus on graphene nanoribbons (GNR) with circularly symmetric deformations. In particular, we study GNR with an inhomogeneous, out of plane Gaussian deformation, connected to reservoirs. We observe an enhancement of the density of states in the deformed region, accompanied with a decrease in the conductance, signaling the presence of confined states. The local density of states exhibits a six-fold symmetric structure with an oscillating sub-lattice occupation asymmetry, that persist for a wide range of energy and model parameters.

Helicoidal Fields and Spin Polarized Currents in CNT-DNA Hybrids

We report on theoretical studies of electronic transport in the archetypical molecular hybrid formed by DNA wrapped around single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Using a Green's function formalism in a $π$-orbital tight-binding representation, we investigate the role that spin-orbit interactions play on the CNT in the case of the helicoidal electric field induced by the polar nature of the adsorbed DNA molecule. We find that spin polarization of the current can take place in the absence of magnetic fields, depending strongly on the direction of the wrapping and length of the helicoidal field. These findings open new routes for using CNTs in spintronic devices.

Upper bound for the conductivity of nanotube networks

Films composed of nanotube networks have their conductivities regulated by the junction resistances formed between tubes. Conductivity values are enhanced by lower junction resistances but should reach a maximum that is limited by the network morphology. By considering ideal ballistic-like contacts between nanotubes we use the Kubo formalism to calculate the upper bound for the conductivity of such films and show how it depends on the nanotube concentration as well as on their aspect ratio. Highest measured conductivities reported so far are approaching this limiting value, suggesting that further progress lies with nanowires other than nanotubes.
