On astheno-K\"ahler nilmanifolds with balanced metrics

In this paper we study the structure of complex nilmanifolds $X$ admitting some special classes of Hermitian metrics, namely, astheno-K\"ahler, strongly Gauduchon and balanced metrics. We prove that, in complex dimension 4, the existence of a (non necessarily invariant) astheno-K\"ahler metric on $X$ implies that the nilmanifold is at most $2$-step and it has first Betti number $\geq 6$. Moreover, the complex structure has a very specific form, sometimes called "of special type" in the literature. We also study the interplay between the existence of astheno-K\"ahler metrics and that of strongly Gauduchon or balanced metrics. A key result is the use of some obstructions that are preserved by what we call $\mathfrak{b}$-extensions. This allows us to study the existence of these metrics on important classes of complex nilmanifolds, such as almost abelian, those having maximal nilpotent complex structures, and 8-dimensional nilmanifolds with non-nilpotent complex structures. We also construct, in every complex dimension $n\geq 4$, complex nilmanifolds admitting both an astheno-K\"ahler metric (possibly also being strongly Gauduchon) and another metric that is balanced. As an application, astheno-K\"ahler nilmanifolds with balanced metrics and with Fr\"olicher spectral sequence not degenerating at the second or third pages are found. To our knowledge, these are the first compact astheno-K\"ahler manifolds with such properties.

Nilmanifolds with non-nilpotent complex structures and their pseudo-K\"ahler geometry

We classify nilpotent Lie algebras with complex structures of weakly non-nilpotent type in real dimension eight, which is the lowest dimension where they arise. Our study, together with previous results on strongly non-nilpotent structures, completes the classification of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras admitting complex structures of non-nilpotent type. As an application, we identify those that support a pseudo-K\"ahler metric, thus providing new counterexamples to a previous conjecture and an infinite family of (Ricci-flat) non-flat neutral Calabi-Yau structures. Moreover, we arrive at the topological restriction $b_1(X)\geq 3$ for every pseudo-K\"ahler nilmanifold $X$ with invariant complex structure, up to complex dimension four.

Fr\"olicher spectral sequence of compact complex manifolds with special Hermitian metrics

In this paper we focus on the interplay between the behaviour of the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence and the existence of special Hermitian metrics on the manifold, such as balanced, SKT or generalized Gauduchon. The study of balanced metrics on nilmanifolds endowed with strongly non-nilpotent complex structures allows us to provide infinite families of compact balanced manifolds with Fr\"olicher spectral sequence not degenerating at the second page. Moreover, this result is extended to non-degeneration at any arbitrary page. Similar results are obtained for the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence of compact generalized Gauduchon manifolds. We also find a compact SKT manifold whose Fr\"olicher spectral sequence does not degenerate at the second page, thus providing a counterexample to a conjecture by Popovici.

The ascending central series of nilpotent Lie algebras with complex structure

We obtain several restrictions on the terms of the ascending central series of a nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ under the presence of a complex structure $J$. In particular, we find a bound for the dimension of the center of $\mathfrak g$ when it does not contain any non-trivial $J$-invariant ideal. Thanks to these results, we provide a structural theorem describing the ascending central series of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras $\mathfrak g$ admitting this particular type of complex structures $J$. Since our method is constructive, it allows us to describe the complex structure equations that parametrize all such pairs $(\mathfrak g, J)$.

Update on the MiniCLEAN Dark Matter Experiment

The direct search for dark matter is entering a period of increased sensitivity to the hypothetical Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP). One such technology that is being examined is a scintillation only noble liquid experiment, MiniCLEAN. MiniCLEAN utilizes over 500 kg of liquid cryogen to detect nuclear recoils from WIMP dark matter and serves as a demonstration for a future detector of order 50 to 100 tonnes. The liquid cryogen is interchangeable between argon and neon to study the A$^{2}$ dependence of the potential signal and examine backgrounds. MiniCLEAN utilizes a unique modular design with spherical geometry to maximize the light yield using cold photomultiplier tubes in a single-phase detector. Pulse shape discrimination techniques are used to separate nuclear recoil signals from electron recoil backgrounds. MiniCLEAN will be spiked with additional $^{39}$Ar to demonstrate the effective reach of the pulse shape discrimination capability. Assembly of the experiment is underway at SNOLAB and an update on the project is given.

Multiwavelength optical observations of chromospherically active binary systems. III. High resolution echelle spectra from Ca II H&K to Ca II IRT

This is the third paper of a series aimed at studying the chromosphere of active binary systems using the information provided for several optical spectroscopic features. High resolution echelle spectra including all the optical chromospheric activity indicators from the Ca II H & K to Ca II IRT lines are analysed here for 16 systems. The chromospheric contribution in these lines has been determined using the spectral subtraction technique. Very broad wings have been found in the subtracted H_alpha profile of the very active star HU Vir. These profiles are well matched using a two-component Gaussian fit (narrow and broad) and the broad component can be interpreted as arising from microflaring. Red-shifted absorption features in the H_alpha line have been detected in several systems and excess emission in the blue wing of FG UMa was also detected. These features indicate that several dynamical processes, or a combination of them, may be involved. Using the E(H_alpha)/E(H_beta) ratio as a diagnostic we have detected prominence-like extended material viewed off the limb in many stars of the sample, and prominences viewed against the disk at some orbital phases in the dwarfs OU Gem and BF Lyn. The He I D_3 line has been detected as an absorption feature in mainly all the giants of the sample. Total filling-in of the He I D_3, probably due to microflaring activity, is observed in HU Vir. Self-absorption with red asymmetry is detected in the Ca II H & K lines of the giants 12 Cam, FG UMa and BM CVn. All the stars analysed show clear filled-in Ca II IRT lines or even notable emission reversal. The small values of the E(8542)/E(8498) ratio we have found indicate Ca II IRT emission arises from plage-like regions.

Multiwavelength optical observations of the chromospherically active binary system OU Gem

We have analysed several multiwavelength optical observations (H_alpha, H_beta, H_epsilon, Ca II H & K, Ca II IRT lines) of chromospherically active binary system OU Gem, taken in three observation runs: March 1996, April 1998 (using the SOFIN spectrograph and the Nordic Optical Telescope) and January 1999 (using the ESA-MUSICOS spectrograph and the Isaac Newton Telescope). The spectra show double H_alpha and H_beta absorption lines, but after applying the spectral subtraction technique, clear excess emission is seen in both components. The two stars have the Ca II IRT lines in emission, strong emission in the Ca II H & K lines and small emission in the H_epsilon line. Although they have very similar spectral types, the cool one is more active than the hot one in all runs, except for MUSICOS run, and in all spectral lines, except for Ca II IRT lines.

Chromospherically active binaries members of young stellar kinematic groups

We present a kinematic study of a large sample of chromospherically active binaries (CAB) in order to determine their membership to representative young disk stellar kinematic groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Mayor group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), Hyades supercluster (800 Myr), IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr) and Castor moving group (200 Myr). Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from Hipparcos Catalogue and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate Galactic space motions (U, V, W) in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different stellar kinematic groups.

Late-type stars members of young stellar kinematic groups

We have compiled a catalog of late-type stars (F5-M) member of representative young disk stellar kinematic groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Mayor group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr). Other moving groups as IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr) and Castor Moving Group (200 Myr) have been also included. Stars have been selected from previously established member of stellar kinematic groups based in photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based in other criteria as their level of chromospheric activity, rotation rate, lithium abundance. Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from Hipparcos Catalogue, and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate Galactic space motions (U, V, W) in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different stellar kinematic groups. In addition to kinematic properties we also give for each star photometric, spectroscopic and physical properties as well as information about activity indicators and Li abundance. Some chromospherically active binaries results to be also members of some of these stellar kinematic groups.
