Spontaneous non-ground state polariton condensation in pillar microcavities

We observe spontaneously driven non-ground state polariton condensation in GaAs pillar microcavities under non-resonant optical excitation. We identify a regime where the interplay of exciton-exciton and pair polariton scattering can lead to mode switching from non-ground state to ground state polariton condensation. A simple kinematic model satisfactorily describes the observed mode switching as each of the above scattering mechanisms becomes prevalent at different carrier densities.

Origin of the emission within the cavity mode of coupled quantum dot-cavity systems

The origin of the emission within the optical mode of a coupled quantum dot-micropillar system is investigated. Time-resolved photoluminescence is performed on a large number of deterministically coupled devices in a wide range of temperature and detuning. The emission within the cavity mode is found to exhibit the same dynamics as the spectrally closest quantum dot state. Our observations indicate that fast dephasing of the quantum dot state is responsible for the emission within the cavity mode. An explanation for recent photon correlation measurements reported on similar systems is proposed.

Global dynamics of high area-to-mass ratios GEO space debris by means of the MEGNO indicator

In this paper we provide an extensive analysis of the global dynamics of high-area-to-mass ratios geosynchronous (GEO) space debris, applying a recent technique developed by Cincotta et al. (2000), Mean Exponential Growth factor of Nearby Orbits (MEGNO), which provides an efficient tool to investigate both regular and chaotic components of the phase space. We compute a stability atlas, for a large set of near-geosynchronous space debris by numerically computing the MEGNO indicator, to provide an accurate understanding of the location of stable and unstable orbits as well as the timescale of their exponential divergence in case of chaotic motion. The results improve the analysis presented in Breiter et al. (2005a) notably by considering the particular case of high-area-to-mass ratios space debris. The results indicate that chaotic orbits region can be highly relevant, especially for very high area-to-mass ratios. Then, we provide some numerical investigations and an analytical theory which lead to a detailed understanding of the resonance structures appearing in the phase space. These analyses bring to the fore a relevant class of secondary resonances on both sides of the well-known pendulum-like pattern of geostationary space debris, leading to complex dynamics of such objects.

Suppression of nuclear spin diffusion at a GaAs/AlGaAs interface measured with a single quantum dot nano-probe

Nuclear spin polarization dynamics are measured in optically pumped individual GaAs/AlGaAs interface quantum dots by detecting the time-dependence of the Overhauser shift in photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Long nuclear polarization decay times of ~ 1 minute have been found indicating inefficient nuclear spin diffusion from the GaAs dot into the surrounding AlGaAs matrix in externally applied magnetic field. A spin diffusion coefficient two orders lower than that previously found in bulk GaAs is deduced.

Controlled light-matter coupling for a single quantum dot embedded in a pillar microcavity using far-field optical lithography

Using far field optical lithography, a single quantum dot is positioned within a pillar microcavity with a 50 nm accuracy. The lithography is performed in-situ at 10 K while measuring the quantum dot emission. Deterministic spectral and spatial matching of the cavity-dot system is achieved in a single step process and evidenced by the observation of strong Purcell effect. Deterministic coupling of two quantum dots to the same optical mode is achieved, a milestone for quantum computing.

Damping and magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic GaMnAs thin films

The magnetic properties of annealed, epitaxial Ga0.93Mn0.07As layers under tensile and compressive stress have been investigated by X-band (9GHz) and Q-band (35GHz) ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy. From the analysis of the linewidths of the uniform mode spectra the FMR Gilbert damping factor "alpha" has been determined. At T=4K we obtain a minimum damping factor of "alpha" = 0.003 for the compressively stressed layer. Its value is not isotropic. It has a minimum value for the easy axes orientations of the magnetic field and increases with the measuring temperature. Its average value is for both type of films of the order of 0.01 in spite of strong differences in the inhomogeneous linewidth which vary between 20 Oe and 600 Oe for the layers grown on GaAs and GaInAs substrates respectively.

Exciton/plasmon polaritons in GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructures near a metallic layer

We report on the strong coupling between inorganic quantum well excitons and surface plasmons. For that purpose a corrugated silver film was deposited on the top of a heterostructure consisting of GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells. The formation of plasmon/heavy-hole exciton/light-hole exciton mixed states is demonstrated with reflectometry experiments. The interaction energies amount to 21 meV for the plasmon/light-hole exciton and 22 meV for the plasmon/heavy-hole exciton. Some particularities of the plasmon-exciton coupling were also discussed and qualitatively related to the plasmon polarization.

Quantum-fluid dynamics of microcavity polaritons

Semiconductor microcavities offer a unique system to investigate the physics of weakly interacting bosons. Their elementary excitations, polaritons--a mixture of excitons and photons--behave, in the low density limit, as bosons that can undergo a phase transition to a regime characterised by long range coherence. Condensates of polaritons have been advocated as candidates for superfluidity; and the formation of vortices as well as elementary excitations with a linear dispersion are actively sought after. In this work, we have created and set in motion a macroscopically degenerate state of polaritons and let it collide with a variety of defects present in the sample. Our experiments show striking manifestations of a coherent light-matter packet that displays features of a superfluid, although one of a highly unusual character as it involves an out-of-equilibrium dissipative system where it travels at ultra-fast velocity of the order of 1% the speed of light. Our main results are the observation of i) a linear polariton dispersion accompanied with diffusion-less motion, ii) flow without resistance when crossing an obstacle, iii) suppression of Rayleigh scattering and iv) splitting into two fluids when the size of the obstacle is comparable with the size of the wavepacket. This work opens the way to the investigation of new phenomenology of out-of-equilibrium condensates.

Hole - Nuclear Spin Interaction in Quantum Dots

We have measured the carrier spin dynamics in p-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots by pump-probe photo-induced circular dichroism and time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. We show that the hole spin dephasing is controlled by the hyperfine interaction between hole and nuclear spins. In the absence of external magnetic field, we find a characteristic hole spin dephasing time of 15 ns, in close agreement with our calculations based on dipole-dipole coupling between the hole and the quantum dot nuclei. Finally we demonstrate that a small external magnetic field, typically 10 mT instead of 200 mT for the case of electrons, quenches the hyperfine hole spin dephasing.

Observation of long-lived polariton states in semiconductor microcavities across the parametric threshold

The excitation spectrum around the pump-only stationary state of a polariton optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in semiconductor microcavities is investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence. The response to a weak pulsed perturbation in the vicinity of the idler mode is directly related to the lifetime of the elementary excitations. A dramatic increase of the lifetime is observed for a pump intensity approaching and exceeding the OPO threshold. The observations can be explained in terms of a critical slowing down of the dynamics upon approaching the threshold and the following onset of the soft Goldstone mode.

STM images of sub-surface Mn atoms in GaAs: evidence of hybridization of surface and impurity states

We prove that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of sub-surface Mn atoms in GaAs are formed by hybridization of the impurity state with intrinsic surface states. They cannot be interpreted in terms of bulk-impurity wavefunction imaging. High atomic resolution images obtained using a low-temperature apparatus are compared with advanced, parameter-free tight-binding simulations accounting for both the buckled (110) surface and vacuum electronic properties.

Titan's rotation: A 3-dimensional theory

We study the forced rotation of Titan seen as a rigid body at the equilibrium Cassini state, involving the spin-orbit synchronization. We used both the analytical and the numerical ways. We analytically determined the equilibrium positions and the frequencies of the 3 free librations around it, while a numerical integration associated to frequency analysis gave us a more synthetic, complete theory, where the free solution split from the forced one. We find a mean obliquity of 2.2 arcmin and the fundamental frequencies of the free librations of about 2.0977, 167.4883, and 306.3360 years. Moreover, we bring out the main role played by Titan's inclination on its rotation, and we suspect a likely resonance involving Titan's wobble.

Efficient dynamical nuclear polarization in quantum dots: Temperature dependence

We investigate in micro-photoluminescence experiments the dynamical nuclear polarization in individual InGaAs quantum dots. Experiments carried out in an applied magnetic field of 2T show that the nuclear polarization achieved through the optical pumping of electron spins is increasing with the sample temperature between 2K and 55K, reaching a maximum of about 50%. Analysing the dependence of the Overhauser shift on the spin polarization of the optically injected electron as a function of temperature enables us to identify the main reasons for this increase.

Spin-Polarized Tunneling as a probe of (Ga,Mn)As electronic properties

We present magnetic and tunnel transport properties of (Ga,Mn)As/(In,Ga)As/(Ga,Mn)As structure before and after adequate annealing procedure. The conjugate increase of magnetization and tunnel magnetoresistance obtained after annealing is shown to be associated to the increase of both exchange energy $Δ$$_{exch}$ and hole concentration by reduction of the Mn interstitial atom in the top magnetic electrode. Through a 6x6 band k.p model, we established general phase diagrams of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) and tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) \textit{vs.} (Ga,Mn)As Fermi energy (E$_F$) and spin-splitting parameter (B$_G$). This allows to give a rough estimation of the exchange energy $Δ$$_{exch}$=6B$_G$$\simeq$120 meV and hole concentration p$\simeq1.10^{20}$cm$^{-3}$ of (Ga,Mn)As and beyond gives the general trend of TMR and TAMR \textit{vs.} the selected hole band involved in the tunneling transport.

Anisotropic spin splitting of the electron ground state in InAs quantum dots

Photoinduced circular dichroism experiments in an oblique magnetic field allow measurements of Larmor precession frequencies, and so give a precise determination of the electron Lande g factor and its anisotropy in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots emitting at 1.32 eV. In good agreement with recent theoretical results, we measure g perp= 0.397 +_ 0.003 and g par = 0.18 +- 0.02.

Bistability of the Nuclear Polarisation created through optical pumping in InGaAs Quantum Dots

We show that optical pumping of electron spins in individual InGaAs quantum dots leads to strong nuclear polarisation that we measure via the Overhauser shift (OHS) in magneto-photoluminescence experiments between 0 and 4T. We find a strongly non-monotonous dependence of the OHS on the applied magnetic field, with a maximum nuclear polarisation of 40% for intermediate magnetic fields. We observe that the OHS is larger for nuclear fields anti-parallel to the external field than in the parallel configuration. A bistability in the dependence of the OHS on the spin polarization of the optically injected electrons is found. All our findings are qualitatively understood with a model based on a simple perturbative approach.

Universal conductance fluctuations in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets: structural and spin disorder

Mesoscopic transport measurements reveal a large effective phase coherence length in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets, contrary to usual 3d-metal ferromagnets. Universal conductance fluctuations of single nanowires are compared for epilayers with a tailored anisotropy. At large magnetic fields, quantum interferences are due to structural disorder only, and an unusual behavior related to hole-induced ferromagnetism is evidenced, for both quantum interferences and decoherence. At small fields, phase coherence is shown to persist down to zero field, even in presence of magnons, and an additional spin disorder contribution to quantum interferences is observed under domain walls nucleation.

Determination of the local concentrations of Mn interstitials and antisite defects in GaMnAs

We present a method for the determination of the local concentrations of interstitial and substitutional Mn atoms and As antisite defects in GaMnAs. The method relies on the sensitivity of the structure factors of weak reflections to the concentrations and locations of these minority constituents. High spatial resolution is obtained by combining structure factor measurement and X-ray analysis in a transmission electron microscope. We demonstrate the prevalence of interstitials with As nearest neighbors in as-grown layers.
