Electron spectral shape of the third-forbidden $\beta$-decay of $^{87}$Rb measured using a Rb$_2$ZrCl$_6$ crystal scintillator

In recent years, interest in experimental studies of $\beta$-decay electron spectra -- often referred to as $\beta$ spectra -- has been growing. This is particularly true for $\beta$ transitions where the electron spectra are sensitive to the effective value of the weak axial coupling, $g_{\rm A}$. Such measurements serve as important benchmarks for nuclear physics calculations and can also be used to characterize background in astroparticle physics experiments. In this work, a dedicated experiment has been carried out to investigate the spectral shape of the third-forbidden $^{87}$Rb $\beta$-decays, with the goal of estimating the effective $g_{\rm A}$ value for this transition and of deriving the T$_{1/2}$ value. This was done by comparing the experimental spectral shape with the estimates from various phenomenological models. The $^{87}$Rb source was embedded directly within the detector material of a new Rb$_2$ZrCl$_6$ crystal scintillator; the data taking was performed deep underground at Gran Sasso National Laboratory. The obtained experimental half-life value for the studied process is T$_{1/2} = 5.08(13) \times$ 10$^{10}$ yr; while a $g_{\rm A}$ value in the range 0.4 to 0.6 is obtained when accounting for uncertainties and depending on the model adopted as discussed in detail in the text.

Double-beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to excited levels of $^{150}$Sm

The $2\nu2\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to the first excited 740.5 keV $0^{+}_{1}$ level of $^{150}$Sm was measured over 5.845 yr with the help of a four-crystal low-background HPGe $\gamma$ spectrometry system in the underground low-background laboratory STELLA of LNGS-INFN. A 2.381 kg highly purified Nd-containing sample was employed as the decay source. The expected de-excitation gamma-quanta of the $0^{+}_{1}$ level with energies 334.0 keV and 406.5 keV were observed both in one-dimensional spectrum and in coincidence data resulting in the half-life $T_{1/2}=[0.83^{+0.18}_{-0.13}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+0.16}_{-0.19}\mathrm{(syst)}]\times 10^{20}$ yr. Interpreting an excess of the 334.0-keV peak area as an indication of the $2\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to the 334.0 keV $2^+_1$ excited level of $^{150}$Sm with a half-life of $T_{1/2}=[1.5^{+2.3}_{-0.6}\mathrm{(stat)}\pm 0.4\mathrm{(syst)}]\times10^{20}$ yr, the $2\nu2\beta$ half-life of $^{150}$Nd for the transition to the 0$^{+}_{1}$ level is $T_{1/2}=[1.03^{+0.35}_{-0.22}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+0.16}_{-0.19}\mathrm{(syst)}]\times 10^{20}$ yr, in agreement with the previous experiments. Both half-life values reasonably agree with the theoretical calculations in the framework of proton-neutron QRPA with isospin restoration combined with like nucleon QRPA for description of excited states in the final nuclei. For $2\nu2\beta$ and $0\nu2\beta$ transitions of $^{150}$Nd and $^{148}$Nd to several excited levels of $^{150}$Sm and $^{148}$Sm, limits were set at level of $T_{1/2}>10^{20}-10^{21}$ yr.

Do we understand the internal spaces of second quantized fermion and boson fields, with gravity included? Relation with strings theories

The article proposes the description of internal spaces of fermion (quarks and leptons and antiquarks and antileptons) and boson (photons, weak bosons, gluons, gravitons and scalars) second quantized fields in a unique way if they all are massless. The internal spaces are described by ``basis vectors'', which are the superposition of odd (for fermions) and even (for bosons) products of the operators $\gamma^ {a}$. For an arbitrary symmetry $SO(d-1,1)$ of the internal spaces, it is the number of fermion fields (they appear in families and have their Hermitian conjugated partners in a separate group) equal to the number of boson fields (they appear in two orthogonal groups), manifesting a kind of supersymmetry, which differ of the string supersymmetry. On the assumption that fermions and bosons are active (they have momenta different from zero) only in $d=(3+1)$ ordinary space-time, bosons present vectors if they carry the space index $\mu=(0,1,2,3)$, and present scalars if they carry the index $\sigma \ge 5$. The author discusses this theory's latest achievements, with a trial to understand whether the extension to strings or to odd-dimensional spaces can lead to a new kind of supersymmetry. This model, named {\it spin-charge-family} theory, manifests in a long series of papers on the phenomenological success of the theory in elementary particle physics and cosmology.

Dark Matter: DAMA/LIBRA and its perspectives

The long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by DAMA deep underground at Gran Sasso Laboratory with different experimental configurations is summarized and perspectives will be highlighted. DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 set-up, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl) confirms the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature at high C.L.; the full exposure is 2.86 ton $\times$ yr over 22 annual cycles. The experiment is currently collecting data in the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 empowered configuration with an even lower software energy threshold. Other recent claims are shortly commented.

Optical, luminescence, and scintillation properties of advanced ZnWO$_4$ crystal scintillators

Zinc tungstate (ZnWO$_4$) crystal scintillators are promising detection material for the experiments searching for double beta decay, dark matter, and investigating rare alpha decays. An extended R&D was performed to develop advanced quality ZnWO$_4$ crystal scintillators. The R&D programme included the selection of the initial materials, the variation of the compound stoichiometry, the application of single and double crystallization, and the annealing of the crystal boules. The optical transmittance of the produced boules was measured, and the luminescence under X-ray excitation in the temperature region from 85 K to room temperature was studied (thermally stimulated luminescence was measured till 350 K). The energy resolution and the relative scintillation pulse amplitude were measured with gamma-sources demonstrating high scintillation properties of the samples produced by single crystallization from deeply purified zinc and tungsten oxides, with stoichiometric composition, annealed in air atmosphere.
