Enhancement of the London penetration depth in pnictides at the onset of SDW order under superconducting dome

Recent measurements of the doping dependence of the London penetration depth λ(x) at low temperatures in clean samples of isovalent BaFe_2[As_(1-x)P_x]_2 at T<<Tc [Hashimoto et al., Science 336, 1554 (2012)] revealed a peak in λ(x) near optimal doping x=0.3. The observation of the peak at T<<Tc, points to the existence of the quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome. We associate such a QCP with the onset of a spin- density-wave order and show that the renormalization of λ(x) by critical magnetic fluctuations, gives rise to the observed feature. We argue that the case of pnictides is conceptually different from a one-component Galilean invariant Fermi liquid, for which correlation effects do not cause the renormalization of the London penetration depth at T=0.

Incoherent pair tunneling in the pseudogap phase of cuprates

Motivated by a recent experiment by Bergeal et al., we reconsider incoherent pair tunneling in a cuprate junction formed from an optimally doped superconducting lead and an underdoped normal metallic lead. We study the impact of the pseudogap on the pair tunneling by describing fermions in the underdoped lead with a model self-energy that has been developed to reproduce photoemission data. We find that the pseudogap causes an additional temperature dependent suppression of the pair contribution to the tunneling current. We discuss consistency with available experimental data and propose future experimental directions.

Nonlinear conductance of long quantum wires at a conductance plateau transition: Where does the voltage drop?

We calculate the linear and nonlinear conductance of spinless fermions in clean, long quantum wires where short-ranged interactions lead locally to equilibration. Close to the quantum phase transition where the conductance jumps from zero to one conductance quantum, the conductance obtains an universal form governed by the ratios of temperature, bias voltage and gate voltage. Asymptotic analytic results are compared to solutions of a Boltzmann equation which includes the effects of three-particle scattering. Surprisingly, we find that for long wires the voltage predominantly drops close to one end of the quantum wire due to a thermoelectric effect.

Quantitative analysis of quantum phase slips in superconducting MoGe nanowires revealed by switching-current statistics

We measure quantum and thermal phase-slip rates using the standard deviation of the switching current in superconducting nanowires at high bias current. Our rigorous quantitative analysis provides firm evidence for the presence of quantum phase slips (QPS) in homogeneous nanowires. We observe that as temperature is lowered, thermal fluctuations freeze at a characteristic crossover temperature Tq, below which the dispersion of the switching current saturates to a constant value, indicating the presence of QPS. The scaling of the crossover temperature Tq with the critical temperature Tc is linear, which is consistent with the theory of macroscopic quantum tunneling. We can convert the wires from the initial amorphous phase to a single crystal phase, in situ, by applying calibrated voltage pulses. This technique allows us to probe directly the effects of the wire resistance, critical temperature and morphology on thermal and quantum phase slips.

Quantum-fluctuation effects in transport properties of superconductors above the paramagnetic limit

We study the transport in ultrathin disordered film near the quantum critical point induced by the Zeeman field. We calculate corrections to the normal state conductivity due to quantum pairing fluctuations. The fluctuation-induced transport is mediated by virtual rather than real quasi-particles. We find that at zero temperature, where the corrections come from purely quantum fluctuations, the Aslamazov-Larkin paraconductivity term, the Maki-Thompson interference contribution and the density of states effects are all of the same order. The total correction leads to the negative magnetoresistance. This result is in qualitative agreement with the recent transport observations in the parallel magnetic field of the homogeneously disordered amorphous films and superconducting two-dimensional electron gas realized at the oxide interfaces.

Distribution of supercurrent switching in graphene under proximity effect

We study the stochastic nature of switching current in hysteretic current-voltage characteristics of superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) junctions. We find that the dispersion of the switching current distribution scales with temperature as a power law with the power close to 1/3. This observation is in sharp contrast with the known Josephson junction behavior where switching current dispersion is expected to scale with the power 2/3. We propose an explanation using a generalized version of Kurkijarvi's theory for the flux stability in rf-SQUID and attribute this anomalous effect to the temperature dependence of the critical current which persists down to low temperatures.

The Nernst effect from fluctuating pairs in the pseudogap phase

The observation of a large Nernst signal in cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature has attracted much attention. A potential explanation is that it originates from superconducting fluctuations. Although the Nernst signal is indeed consistent with gaussian fluctuations for overdoped cuprates, gaussian theory fails to describe the temperature dependence seen for underdoped cuprates. Here, we consider the vertex correction to gaussian theory resulting from the pseudogap. This yields a Nernst signal in good agreement with the data.

Transport implications of Fermi arcs in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates

We derive the fermionic contribution to the longitudinal and Hall conductivities within a Kubo formalism, using a phenomenological Greens function which has been previously developed to describe photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. We find that the in-plane electrical and thermal conductivities are metallic-like, showing a universal limit behavior characteristic of a d-wave spectrum as the scattering rate goes to zero. In contrast, the c-axis resistivity and the Hall number are insulating-like, being divergent in the same limit. The relation of these results to transport data in the pseudogap phase is discussed.

Resonantly suppressed transmission and anomalously enhanced light absorption in ultrathin metal films

We study light diffraction in the periodically modulated ultrathin metal films both analytically and numerically. Without modulation these films are almost transparent. The periodicity results in the anomalous effects, such as suppression of the transmittance accompanied by a strong enhancement of the absorptivity and specular reflectivity, due to excitation of the surface plasmon polaritons. These phenomena are opposite to the widely known enhanced transparency of periodically modulated optically thick metal films. Our theoretical analysis can be a starting point for the experimental investigation of these intriguing phenomena.

Anomalous charge transport in dodecaborides RB12 (R- Ho, Er, Tm, Lu)

High precision measurements of Hall RH(T) and Seebeck S(T) coefficients have been carried out for the first time on single crystals of rare earth dodecaborides RB12 (R - Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) at temperatures 1.8 - 300K. Low temperature anomalies associated with antiferromagnetic phase transitions in HoB12, ErB12 and TmB12 compounds have been detected on the temperature dependencies of RH(T) and S(T). The estimated values of charge carriers mobility allowed us to conclude about the appreciable influence of spin fluctuations on the charge transport in these compounds with B12 atomic clusters.

Measurement of $K^+ \to π^0 π^0 e^+ ν$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay using stopped positive kaons

The $K^+ \to π^0 π^0 e^+ ν$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons for a data sample of 216 events. A comparison of the observed spectra with a Monte Carlo simulation determined the $K_{e4}^{00}$ form factor. The results are compatible with the $K^+ \to π^+ π^- e^+ ν$ data, as estimated from the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. We also established that the $K_{e4}^{00}$ channel can be used to determine the $π$-$π$ scattering lengths.

A new limit of T-violating transverse muon polarization in the $K^{+}\toπ^{0}μ^{+} ν$ decay

A search for T-violating transverse muon polarization ($P_T$) in the $K^{+}\to π^{0}μ^{+}ν$ decay was performed using kaon decays at rest. A new improved value, $P_T= -0.0017\pm 0.0023 (stat)\pm 0.0011 (syst)$, was obtained giving an upper limit, $| P_T | < 0.0050$. The T-violation parameter was determined to be Im$ξ= -0.0053 \pm 0.0071(stat)\pm 0.0036(syst)$ giving an upper limit, $|$Im$ξ| <0.016$.
