Algebraic model of baryon resonances

We discuss recent calculations of electromagnetic form factors and strong decay widths of nucleon and delta resonances. The calculations are done in a collective constituent model of the nucleon, in which the baryons are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of an oblate top.

Recent Calculations of Electromagnetic and Strong Decays of N*

We report on recent calculations of electromagnetic elastic form factors, helicity amplitudes and strong decay widths of N* resonances. The calculations are done in a collective constituent model for the nucleon, in which the resonances are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of an oblate top with a prescribed distribution of charges and magnetization.

Algebraic model of an oblate top

We consider an algebraic treatment of a three-body system. In particular, we develop the formalism for a system of three identical objects and discuss an application to nonstrange baryon resonances which are interpreted as vibrational and rotational excitations of an oblate symmetric top. We derive closed expressions for a set of elementary form factors that appear in the calculation of both electromagnetic, strong and weak couplings of baryons.

Algebraic Approach to Baryon Structure

We present an algebraic approach to the internal structure of baryons in terms of three constituents. We investigate a collective model in which the nucleon is regarded as a rotating and vibrating oblate top with a prescribed distribution of charges and magnetization. We contrast the collective and single-particle descriptions of baryons and compare the predictions of the model with existing data on masses, electromagnetic elastic and transition form factors and strong decays widths.

Partial Dynamical Symmetry and Mixed Dynamics

Partial dynamical symmetry describes a situation in which some eigenstates have a symmetry which the quantum Hamiltonian does not share. This property is shown to have a classical analogue in which some tori in phase space are associated with a symmetry which the classical Hamiltonian does not share. A local analysis in the vicinity of these special tori reveals a neighbourhood of phase space foliated by tori. This clarifies the suppression of classical chaos associated with partial dynamical symmetry. The results are used to divide the states of a mixed system into ``chaotic'' and ``regular'' classes.

Strong decays of qqq baryons

We study strong decays of nonstrange baryons by making use of the algebraic approach to hadron structure. Within this framework we derive closed expressions for decay widths in an elementary-meson emission model and use these to analyze the experimental data for N* -> N + pi, N* -> Delta + pi, N* -> N + eta, Delta* -> N + pi, Delta* -> Delta + pi and Delta* -> Delta + eta decays.

Electromagnetic Form Factors in a Collective Model of the Nucleon

We study the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in a collective model of baryons. Using the algebraic approach to hadron structure, we derive closed expressions for both elastic and transition form factors, and consequently for the helicity amplitudes that can be measured in electro- and photoproduction. Effects of spin-flavor symmetry breaking and of swelling of hadrons with increasing excitation energy are considered.

Partial Dynamical Symmetry in Deformed Nuclei

We discuss the notion of partial dynamical symmetry in relation to nuclear spectroscopy. Explicit forms of Hamiltonians with partial $SU(3)$ symmetry are presented in the framework of the interacting boson model of nuclei. An analysis of the resulting spectrum and electromagnetic transitions demonstrates the relevance of such partial symmetry to the spectroscopy of axially deformed nuclei.

Strong decays of nucleon and delta resonances

We study the strong couplings of the nucleon and delta resonances in a collective model. In the ensuing algebraic treatment we derive closed expressions for decay widths which are used to analyze the experimental data for strong decays into the pion and eta channels.

Form factors in an algebraic model of the nucleon

We study the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in a collective model of baryons. In an algebraic approach to hadron structure, we derive closed expressions for both elastic and transition form factors, and consequently for the helicity amplitudes that can be measured in electro- and photoproduction.

Spectrum Generating Algebra for X$_{3}$ Molecules

A new spectrum generating algebra for a unified description of rotations and vibrations in polyatomic molecules is introduced. An application to nonlinear X$_3$ molecules shows that this model (i) incorporates exactly the relevant point group, (ii) provides a complete classification of oblate top states, and (iii) treats properly both degenerate and nondegenerate vibrations.

Electromagnetic couplings in a collective model of the nucleon

We study the electromagnetic properties of the nucleon and its excitations in a collective model. In the ensuing algebraic treatment all results for helicity amplitudes and form factors can be derived in closed form in the limit of a large model space. We discuss nucleon form factors and transverse electromagnetic couplings in photo- and electroproduction, including transition form factors that can be measured at new electron facilities.

Algebraic models of hadron structure: I. Nonstrange baryons

We introduce an algebraic framework for the description of baryons. Within this framework we study a collective string-like model and show that this model gives a good overall description of the presently available data. We discuss in particular masses and electromagnetic couplings, including the transition form factors that can be measured at new electron facilities.

A Collective Model of Baryons

We propose an algebraic description of the geometric structure of baryons in terms of the algebra $U(7)$. We construct a mass operator that preserves the threefold permutational symmetry and discuss a collective model of baryons with the geometry of an oblate top.

Algebraic Treatment of Collective Excitations in Baryon Spectroscopy

We present an algebraic U(7) model for baryons which encompasses both single-particle and collective forms of quark dynamics. The mass operator by construction preserves the permutation symmetry between identical quarks. The underlying geometric structure of baryons is discussed in terms of a rigid rotating and vibrating oblate top shape. The model is applied to the mass spectrum of nonstrange baryons.
