Searching for Debris Disks around Seven Radio Pulsars

We report on our searches for debris disks around seven relatively nearby radio pulsars, which are isolated sources and were carefully selected as the targets on the basis of our deep $K_s$-band imaging survey. The $K_s$ images obtained with the 6.5\,m Baade Magellan Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory are analyzed together with the \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC images at 4.5 and 8.0~$μ$m and the \textit{WISE} images at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22~$μ$m. No infrared (IR) counterparts of these pulsars are found, with flux upper limits of $\sim μ$Jy at near-infrared ($λ<10\ μ$m) and $\sim$10--1000\,$μ$Jy at mid-infrared wavelengths ($λ>10\ μ$m). The results of this search are discussed in terms of the efficiency of converting the pulsar spin-down energy to thermal energy and X-ray heating of debris disks, with comparison made to the two magnetars 4U~0142+61 and 1E~2259+586 which are suggested to harbor a debris disk.

Extended quark mean-field model for neutron stars

We extend the quark mean-field (QMF) model to strangeness freedom to study the properties of hyperons ($Λ,Σ,Ξ$) in infinite baryon matter and neutron star properties. The baryon-scalar meson couplings in the QMF model are determined self-consistently from the quark level, where the quark confinement is taken into account in terms of a scalar-vector harmonic oscillator potential. The strength of such confinement potential for $u,d$ quarks is constrained by the properties of finite nuclei, while the one for $s$ quark is limited by the properties of nuclei with a $Λ$ hyperon. These two strengths are not same, which represents the SU(3) symmetry breaking effectively in the QMF model. Also, we use an enhanced $Σ$ coupling with the vector meson, and both $Σ$ and $Ξ$ hyperon potentials can be properly described in the model. The effects of the SU(3) symmetry breaking on the neutron star structures are then studied. We find that the SU(3) breaking shifts earlier the hyperon onset density and makes hyperons more abundant in the star, in comparisons with the results of the SU(3) symmetry case. However, it does not affect much the star's maximum mass. The maximum masses are found to be $1.62 M_{\odot}$ with hyperons and $1.88 M_{\odot}$ without hyperons. The present neutron star model is shown to have limitations on explaining the recently measured heavy pulsar.

Charmonium, $D_s$ and $D_s^*$ from overlap fermion on DWF configurations

We take a new approach to determine the scale parameter $r_0$, the physical masses of strange and charm quarks through a global fit which incorporates continuum extrapolation, chiral extrapolation and quark mass interpolation to the lattice data. The charmonium and charm-strange meson spectrum are calculated with overlap valence quarks on $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaboration. We use the masses of $D_s$, $D_s^*$ and $J/ψ$ as inputs and obtain $m_c^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=1.110(24)\,{\rm GeV}$, $m_s^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=0.104(9)\,{\rm GeV}$ and $r_0=0.458(11)\,{\rm fm}$. Subsequently, the hyperfine-splitting of charmonium and $f_{D_s}$ are predicted to be $112(5)\,{\rm MeV}$ and $254(5)\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively.

Quark mean-field model for single and double $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hypernuclei

The study of hypernuclei in the quark mean-field model are extended from single-$Λ$ hypernuclei to double-$Λ$ hypernuclei as well as $Ξ$ hypernuclei (double strangeness nuclei), with a broken SU(3) symmetry for the quark confinement potential. The strength of the potential for $u,d$ quarks is constrained by the properties of finite nuclei, while the one for $s$ quark is fixed by the single $Λ$-nucleus potential at the nuclear saturation density, which has a slightly different value. Compared to our previous work, we find that the introduction of such symmetry breaking improves efficiently the description of the single $Λ$ energies for a wide range of mass region, which demonstrates the importance of this effect on the hypernuclei study. Predictions for double-$Λ$ hypernuclei and $Ξ$ hypernuclei are then made, confronting with a few available experiential double-$Λ$ hypernuclei data and other model calculations. The consistency of our results with the available double-$Λ$ hypernucleus is found to be surprisingly good. Also, there is generally a bound state for $Ξ^0$ hypernuclei with both light and heavy core nuclei in our model.

Strangeness and charmness content of nucleon from overlap fermions on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion configurations

We present a calculation of the strangeness and charmness contents and of the nucleon from dynamical lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors. The calculation is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations. The configurations are generated by the RBC collaboration on a 24^3*64 lattice with sea quark mass am_l=0.005, am_s=0.04, and inverse lattice spacing a^{-1}=1.73GeV. Both actions have chiral symmetry which is essential in avoiding contamination due to the operator mixing with other flavors. Nucleon propagator and the quark loops are both computed with stochastic grid sources, while low-mode substitution and low-mode averaging methods are used respectively which substantially improve the signal to noise ratio. We obtain the strangeness matrix element f_{T_{s}} = m_s / M_N = 0.0334(62), and the charmness content f_{T_{c}} = m_c / M_N = 0.094(31) which is resolved from zero by 3σprecision for the first time.

Tensor force and shape evolution of Si isotopes in Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model

Much interest has been devoted to the shape evolution of neutron-rich Si isotopes recently both experimentally and theoretically. We provide our study of $^{28-42}$Si by Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model with BCS approximation for the pairing channel. We use an empirical pairing parameter deduced from the experimental binding energy data for each nuclei and each Skyrme parametrization. The recent highlight of the deformation change from a prolate shape of $^{38}$Si to an oblate shape of $^{42}$Si is confirmed in the present model. We also emphasize the role of tensor force on deformations of neutron-rich $^{30,32}$Si, and discuss its underlying physics.

Revisiting the hot matter in the center of gamma-ray bursts and supernova

Hot matter with nucleons can be produced in the inner region of the neutrino-dominated accretion flow in gamma-ray bursts or during the proto-neutron star birth in successful supernova. The composition and equation of state of the matter depend on the dynamic $β$ equilibrium under various neutrino opacities. The strong interaction between nucleons may also play an important role. We plan to extend the previous studies by incorporating these two aspects in our model. The modification of the $β$-equilibrium condition from neutrino optically thin to thick has been modeled by an equilibrium factor $χ$ ranging between the neutrino-freely-escaping case and the neutrino-trapped case. We employ the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach extended to the finite temperature regime to study the interacting nucleons. We show that the composition and chemical potentials of the hot nuclear matter for different densities and temperatures at each stage of $β$ equilibrium. We also compare our realistic equation of states with those of the free gas model. We find the neutrino opacity and the strong interaction between nucleons are important for the description and should be taken into account in model calculations.

The thermal dust emission in the N158-N159-N160 (LMC) star forming complex mapped by Spitzer, Herschel and LABOCA

We present a study of the infrared/submm emission of the LMC star forming complex N158-N159-N160. Combining observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope (3.6-70um), the Herschel Space Observatory (100-500um) and LABOCA (870um) allows us to work at the best angular resolution available now for an extragalactic source. We observe a remarkably good correlation between SPIRE and LABOCA emission and resolve the low surface brightnesses emission. We use the Spitzer and Herschel data to perform a resolved Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) modelling of the complex. Using MBB, we derive a global emissivity index beta_c of 1.47. If beta cold is fixed to 1.5, we find an average temperature of 27K. We also apply the Galliano et al. (2011) modelling technique (and amorphous carbon to model carbon dust) to derive maps of the star formation rate, the mean starlight intensity, the fraction of PAHs or the dust mass surface density of the region. We observe that the PAH fraction strongly decreases in the HII regions. This decrease coincides with peaks in the mean radiation field intensity map. The dust surface densities follow the FIR distribution, with a total dust mass of 2.1x10^4 Msolar (2.8 times less than when using graphite grains) in the resolved elements we model. We find a non-negligible amount of dust in the molecular cloud N159 South (showing no massive SF). We also investigate the drivers of the Herschel/PACS and SPIRE submm colours as well as the variations in the gas-to-dust mass ratio (G/D) and the XCO conversion factor in the region N159. We finally model individual regions to analyse variations in the SED shape across the complex and the 870um emission in more details. No measurable submm excess emission at 870um seems to be detected in these regions.

Tensor correlation, pairing interaction and deformation in Ne isotopes and Ne hypernuclei

We study tensor and pairing effects on the quadruple deformation of neon isotopes based on a deformed Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model with BCS approximation for the pairing channel. We extend the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock formalism for the description of single- and double-lambda hypernuclei adopting two different hyperon-nucleon interactions. It is found that the interplay of pairing and tensor interactions is crucial to derive the deformations in several neon isotopes. Especially, the shapes of $^{26,30}$Ne are studied in details in comparisons with experimentally observed shapes. Furthermore the deformations of the hypernuclei are compared with the corresponding neon isotopic cores in the presence of tensor force. We find the same shapes with somewhat smaller deformations for single $Λ$-hypernuclei compared with their core deformations. It is also pointed out that the latest version of hyperon interaction, the ESC08b model, having a deeper $Λ$ potential makes smaller deformations for hypernuclei than those of another NSC97f model.

Experimental investigation of the electronic structure of Ca$_{0.83}$La$_{0.17}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We performed a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy study of the electronic structure of electron-doped Ca$_{0.83}$La$_{0.17}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. A surface reconstruction associated with the dimerization of As atoms is observed directly in the real space, as well as the consequent band folding in the momentum space. Besides this band folding effect, the Fermi surface topology of this material is similar to that reported previously for BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$, with $Γ$-centred hole pockets quasi-nested to M-centred electron pockets by the antiferromagnetic wave vector. Although no superconducting gap is observed by ARPES possibly due to low superconducting volume fraction, a gap-like density of states depression of $7.7\pm 2.9$ meV is determined by scanning tunneling microscopy.

The $Δ_{mix}$ parameter in the overlap on domain-wall mixed action

A direct calculation of the mixed-action parameter $Δ_{mix}$ with valence overlap fermions on a domain-wall fermion sea is presented. The calculation is performed on four ensembles of the 2+1-flavor domain-wall gauge configurations: $24^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l= 0.005$, $a=0.114\fm$) and $32^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l = 0.004, 0.006, 0.008$, $a=0.085\fm$). For pion masses close to $300\MeV$ we find \hbox{$Δ_{mix}=0.030(6)\GeV^4$} at $a=0.114\fm$ and $Δ_{mix}=0.033(12)\GeV^4$ at $a=0.085\fm$. The results are quite independent of the lattice spacing and they are significantly smaller than the results for valence domain-wall fermions on Asqtad sea or those of valence overlap fermions on clover sea. Combining the results extracted from these two ensembles, we get $Δ_{mix}=0.030(6)(5)\GeV^4$, where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error associated with the fitting method.

The Strangeness and Charmness of Nucleon from Overlap Fermions

The calculation of the strangeness and charmness of the nucleon is presented with overlap fermion action on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion configurations. We adopt stochastic grid sources and the low mode substitution technique to improve the signals of nucleon correlation functions and the loops. The calculation is done on a $24^3\times 64$ lattice with $m_l=0.005$, $m_h=0.04$, and $a^{-1}=1.73\,{\rm GeV}$. We find $ f_{T_{s}} = 0.048(15)$ and $f_{T_{c}} = 0.029(43)$.

Non-Standard Grain Properties, Dark Gas Reservoir, and Extended Submillimeter Excess, Probed by Herschel in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Aims: In this paper, we perform detailed modelling of the Spitzer and Herschel observations of the LMC, in order to: (i) systematically study the uncertainties and biases affecting dust mass estimates; and to (ii) explore the peculiar ISM properties of the LMC. Methods: To achieve these goals, we have modelled the spatially resolved SEDs with two alternate grain compositions, to study the impact of different submillimetre opacities on the dust mass. We have rigorously propagated the observational errors (noise and calibration) through the entire fitting process, in order to derive consistent parameter uncertainties. Results: First, we show that using the integrated SED leads to underestimating the dust mass by ~50 % compared to the value obtained with sufficient spatial resolution, for the region we studied. This might be the case, in general, for unresolved galaxies. Second, we show that Milky Way type grains produce higher gas-to-dust mass ratios than what seems possible according to the element abundances in the LMC. A spatial analysis shows that this dilemma is the result of an exceptional property: the grains of the LMC have on average a larger intrinsic submm opacity (emissivity index beta~1.7 and opacity kappa_abs(160 microns)=1.6 m2/kg) than those of the Galaxy. By studying the spatial distribution of the gas-to-dust mass ratio, we are able to constrain the fraction of unseen gas mass between ~10, and ~100 % and show that it is not sufficient to explain the gas-to-dust mass ratio obtained with Milky Way type grains. Finally, we confirm the detection of a 500 microns extended emission excess with an average relative amplitude of ~15 %, varying up to 40 %. This excess anticorrelates well with the dust mass surface density. Although we do not know the origin of this excess, we show that it is unlikely the result of very cold dust, or CMB fluctuations.

Study of the scalar charmed-strange meson Ds0*(2317) with chiral fermions

The recently discovered charmed-strangemeson Ds0*(2317) has been speculated to be a tetraquark mesonium. We study this suggestion with overlap fermions on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion configurations. We use 4-quark interpolating operatorswith Z4 grid sources on two lattices (16\times16\times16\times32 and 24\times24\times24 times64) to study the volume dependence of the states in an attempt to discern the nature of the states in the four-quark correlator to see if they are all two-meson scattering states or if one is a tetraquark mesonium. We also use the hybrid boundary condition method for this purpose which is designed to lift the two-meson states in energy while leaving the tetraquark mesonium unchanged. We find that the volume method is not effective in the present case due to the fact that the scattering states spectrum is closely packed for such heavy states so that one cannot separate out individual scattering states since the volume dependence is skewed as a result. However, the hybrid boundary condition method works and we found that the four-quark correlators can be fitted with a tower of two-meson scattering states. We conclude that we do not see a tetraquark mesonium in the Ds0*(2317) meson region.

Dust Emission from Evolved and Unevolved HII Regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present a study of the dust properties of 12 classical and superbubble HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We use infrared photometry from Spitzer (8, 24, 70, and 160 \mum bands), obtained as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) program, along with archival spectroscopic classifications of the ionizing stars to examine the role of stellar sources on dust heating and processing. Our infrared observations show surprisingly little correlation between the emission properties of the dust and the effective temperatures or bolometric magnitudes of stars in the HII regions, suggesting that the HII region evolutionary timescale is not on the order of the dust processing timescale. We find that the infrared emission of superbubbles and classical HII regions shows little differentiation between the two classes, despite the significant differences in age and morphology. We do detect a correlation of the 24 \mum emission from hot dust with the ratio of 70 to 160 \mum flux. This correlation can be modeled as a trend in the temperature of a minority hot dust component, while a majority of the dust remains significantly cooler.

Hyperon stars at finite temperature in the Brueckner theory

We perform Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations of hypernuclear matter at finite temperature and provide convenient analytical parametrizations of the results. We study then the properties of (proto)neutron stars containing hyperons. We find important effects of trapping and finite temperature on the structure of hyperonic stars.

Overlap Valence on 2+1 Flavor Domain Wall Fermion Configurations with Deflation and Low-mode Substitution

The overlap fermion propagator is calculated on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 x 32, 24^3 x 64 and 32^3 x 64 lattices. With HYP smearing and low eigenmode deflation, it is shown that the inversion of the overlap operator can be expedited by ~ 20 times for the 16^3 x 32 lattice and ~ 80 times for the 32^3 x 64 lattice. Through the study of hyperfine splitting, we found that the O(m^2a^2) error is small and these dynamical fermion lattices can adequately accommodate quark mass up to the charm quark. The low energy constant Δ_{mix} which characterizes the discretization error of the pion made up of a pair of sea and valence quarks in this mixed action approach is calculated via the scalar correlator with periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. It is found to be small which shifts a 300 MeV pion mass by ~ 10 to 19 MeV on these sets of lattices. We have studied the signal-to-noise issue of the noise source for the meson and baryon. It is found that the many-to-all meson and baryon correlators with Z_3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution is efficient in reducing errors for the correlators of both mesons and baryons. With 64-point Z_3 grid source and low-mode substitution, it can reduce the statistical errors of the light quark (m_π ~ 200 - 300 MeV) meson and nucleon correlators by a factor of ~ 3-4 as compared to the point source. The Z_3 grid source itself can reduce the errors of the charmonium correlators by a factor of ~ 3.

Meson spectra from overlap fermion on domain wall gauge configurations

We report meson spectra obtained by using valence overlap fermion propagators generated on a background of 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 X 32, 24^3 X 64 and 32^3 X 64 lattices. We use many-to-all correlators with Z3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution which is efficient in reducing errors for the hadron correlators. The preliminary results on meson spectrum, a0 correlators, and charmonium hyperfine splitting for three sea quark masses are reported here.
