Large and Small Polaron Excitations in La2/3(Sr/Ca)1/3MnO3 Films

We present detailed optical measurements of the mid-infrared (MIR) excitations in thin films of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) across the magnetic transition. The shape of the excitation at about 0.2 eV in both samples is analyzed in terms of polaron models. We propose to identify the MIR resonance in LSMO as the excitation of large polarons and that in LCMO as a small polaron excitation. A scaling behavior for the low-energy side of the polaronic MIR resonance in LSMO is established.

Dielectric behavior of Copper Tantalum Oxide

A thorough investigation of the dielectric properties of Cu2Ta4O12, a material crystallizing in a pseudo-cubic, perovskite-derived structure is presented. We measured the dielectric constant and conductivity of single crystals in an exceptionally broad frequency range up to GHz frequencies and at temperatures from 25 - 500 K. The detected dielectric constant is unusually high (reaching values up to 105) and almost constant in a broad frequency and temperature range. Cu2Ta4O12 possesses a crystal structure similar to CaCu3Ti4O12, the compound for which such an unusually high dielectric constant was first observed. An analysis of the results using a simple equivalent circuit and measurements with different types of contact revealed that extrinsic interfacial polarization effects, derived from surface barrier capacitors are the origin of the observed giant dielectric constants. The intrinsic properties of Cu2Ta4O12 are characterized by a (still relatively high) dielectric constant in the order of 100 and by charge transport via hopping conduction of Anderson-localized charge carriers.

Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO$_3$

LaTiO$_3$ is known as Mott-insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N}=146$ K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity, electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single crystals. At $T_{\rm N}$ significant structural changes appear, which are volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the dc-resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret these experimental observations as evidence of orbital order.

Dielectric properties and dynamical conductivity of LaTiO3: From dc to optical frequencies

We provide a complete and detailed characterization of the temperature-dependent response to ac electrical fields of LaTiO3, a Mott-Hubbard insulator close to the metal-insulator transition. We present combined dc, broadband dielectric, mm-wave, and infrared spectra of ac conductivity and dielectric constant, covering an overall frequency range of 17 decades. The dc and dielectric measurements reveal information on the semiconducting charge-transport properties of LaTiO3, indicating the importance of Anderson localization, and on the dielectric response due to ionic polarization. In the infrared region, the temperature dependence of the phonon modes gives strong hints for a structural phase transition at the magnetic ordering temperature. In addition, a gap-like electronic excitation following the phonon region is analyzed in detail. We compare the results to the soft-edge behavior of the optical spectra characteristic for Mott-Hubbard insulators. Overall a consistent picture of the charge-transport mechanisms in LaTiO3 emerges.

Doping dependence of the gap anisotropy in LCCO studied by millimeter-wave spectroscopy

We measure the penetration depth of optimally doped and underdoped La2-xCexCuO4 in the millimeter frequency domain (4 - 7 cm-1) and for temperatures 2 K < T < 300 K. The penetration depth as function of temperature reveals significant changes on electron doping. It shows quadratic temperature dependence in underdoped samples, but increases almost exponentially at optimal doping. Significant changes in the gap anisotropy (or even in the gap symmetry) may account for this transition.

The response of disordered matter to electromagnetic fields

We have studied a variety of different disordered materials, including molecular and ionic liquids, supercooled liquids and glasses, ionic conductors, and doped semiconductors, in ac electromagnetic fields over an exceptional broad dynamic range including the rarely investigated GHz to THz region. We show that all classes of disordered matter exhibit an astonishingly similar response: In addition to Jonscher's time-honored "Universal Dielectric Response", a superlinear power-law increase of the frequency-dependent conductivity shows up bridging the gap between the classical dielectric and the infrared region. We demonstrate that the universal dielectric behavior of disordered matter extends up to much higher frequencies than thought until now and covers the range from ultra-low (mHz) to phonon (THz) frequencies.

The Orbital Order Parameter in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 probed by Electron Spin Resonance

The temperature dependence of the electron-spin resonance linewidth in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 has been determined and analyzed in the paramagnetic regime across the orbital ordering transition. From the temperature dependence and the anisotropy of linewidth and $g$-value the orbital order can be unambiguously determined via the mixing angle of the wave functions of the $e_{\rm g}$-doublet. The linewidth shows a similar evolution with temperature as resonant x-ray scattering results.

Anisotropic Colossal Magnetoresistance Effects in Fe_{1-x}Cu_xCr_2S_4

A detailed study of the electronic transport and magnetic properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Cr$_2$S$_4$ ($x \leq 0.5$) on single crystals is presented. The resistivity is investigated for $2 \leq T \leq 300$ K in magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla and under hydrostatic pressure up to 16 kbar. In addition magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were performed. FMR and magnetization data reveal a pronounced magnetic anisotropy, which develops below the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, and increases strongly towards lower temperatures. Increasing the Cu concentration reduces this effect. At temperatures below 35 K the magnetoresistance, $MR = \frac{ρ(0) - ρ(H)}{ρ(0)}$, exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the magnetic field, probably due to an enhanced anisotropy. Applying the field along the hard axis leads to a change of sign and a strong increase of the absolute value of the magnetoresistance. On the other hand the magnetoresistance remains positive down to lower temperatures, exhibiting a smeared out maximum with the magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The results are discussed in the ionic picture using a triple-exchange model for electron hopping as well as a half-metal utilizing a band picture.

Far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity in electron-doped cuprate La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4

We performed far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity experiments in the electron-doped cuprate La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 with x = 0.081 (underdoped regime, T_c = 25 K). The onset of the absorption in the superconducting state is gradual in frequency and is inconsistent with the isotropic s-wave gap. Instead, a narrow quasiparticle peak is observed at zero frequency and a second peak at finite frequencies, clear fingerprints of the conductivity in a d-wave superconductor. A far-infrared conductivity peak can be attributed to 4Delta_0, or to 2Delta_0 + Delta_spin, where Delta_spin is the resonance frequency of the spin-fluctuations. The infrared conductivity as well as the suppression of the quasiparticle scattering rate below T_c are qualitatively similar to the results in the hole-doped cuprates.

ESR investigation of the spin dynamics in (Gd_{1-x}Y_{x})_2PdSi_{3}

We report electron-spin resonance measurements in polycrystalline samples of (Gd_{1-x}Y_{x})_2PdSi_{3}. We observe the onset of a broadening of the linewidth and of a decrease of the resonance field at approximately twice the Neel temperature in the paramagnetic state, this characteristic temperature coincides with the electrical resistivity minimum. The high-temperature behaviour of the linewidth is governed by a strong bottleneck effect.

Magnetic Anisotropy in La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO_3: Electron Spin Resonance

We report on Ferromagnetic-Resonance experiments in a single crystal of La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO_3 in the temperature range from 4 to 300 K. The observed anisotropy of the resonance line changes on crossing the transition from the orthorhombic O-phase to the rhombohedral R-phase at T~100 K and indicates a reorientation of the spins at about 130 K.

LiBC by polarized Raman spectroscopy: Evidence for lower crystal symmetry ?

The paper presents polarized Raman scattering study on a few-micron-size crystallite of LiBC with natural faces. The experiment on as grown sample has revealed a four lattice modes with frequencies at 1276 cm^-1, 830 cm^-1, 546 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1, respectively. The number of observed Raman lines and their selection rules are incompatible with the assumed D6h symmetry. The modes at 1276 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1 correspond to the expected Raman active modes. In contrast with the superconducting compound MgB2, the B-C bond stretching mode (at 1276 cm^-1) has rather small damping. The two "forbidden" modes (at 830 cm^-1 and 546 cm^-1) disappeared after subsequent thermal treatment.

On the peak in the far-infrared conductivity of strongly anisotropic cuprates

We investigate the far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity of electron-doped La_(2-x)Ce_xCuO_4 tilted 1 degree off from the ab-plane. The effective conductivity measured for this tilt angle reveals an intensive peak at finite frequency (ν~ 50 cm{-1}) due to a mixing of the in-plane and out-of-plane responses. The peak disappears for the pure in-plane response and transforms to the Drude-like contribution. Comparative analysis of the mixed and the in-plane contributions allows to extract the c-axis conductivity which shows a Josephson plasma resonance at 11.7 cm{-1} in the superconducting state.

Electronic and optical properties of LiBC

LiBC, a semiconducting ternary borocarbide constituted of the lightest elements only, has been synthesized and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy, and conductivity measurements. Utilizing an infrared microscope the phonon spectrum has been investigated in single crystals. The in-plane B-C stretching mode has been detected at 150 meV, noticeably higher than in AlB2, a non-superconducting isostructural analog of MgB2. It is this stretching mode, which reveals a strong electron-phonon coupling in MgB2, driving it into a superconducting state below 40 K, and is believed to mediate predicted high-temperature superconductivity in hole-doped LiBC [H. Rosner, A. Kitaigorodsky, and W. E. Pickett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 127001 (2002)].

Photoemission study of polycrystalline Gd_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_{3+delta}: correlation and surface effects

We report photoemission studies of polycrystalline samples of Sr-doped GdTiO_{3+delta}, which undergoes a Mott-Hubbard-like metal-insulator transition at a Ti-concentration of about 20%. The Ti 3d-derived valence band near the Fermi level displays a two-peak structure consistent with a Hubbard-model-type interpretation as quasiparticle and lower Hubbard band. Contrary to the theoretical expectation the lower Hubbard band does not change its energy with doping. However, the analysis of the core level spectra and elemental mapping with a scanning electron microscope indicate a strongly inhomogeneous doping concentration in the probed surface regions. This questions the intrinsic character of the valence band spectra and demonstrates a general difficulty when using polycrystalline samples for such studies.

Structural, magnetic and electrical properties of single crystalline La_(1-x)Sr_xMnO_3 for 0.4 < x < 0.85

We report on structural, magnetic and electrical properties of Sr-doped LaMnO_3 single crystals for doping levels 0.4 < x < 0.85. The complex structural and magnetic phase diagram can only be explained assuming significant contributions from the orbital degrees of freedom. Close to x = 0.6 a ferromagnetic metal is followed by an antiferromagnetic metallic phase below 200 K. This antiferromagnetic metallic phase exists in a monoclinic crystallographic structure. Following theoretical predictions this metallic antiferromagnet is expected to reveal an (x^2-y^2)-type orbital order. For higher Sr concentrations an antiferromagnetic insulator is established below room temperature.

An unusual interplay among disorder, Kondo-effect and spin-glass behavior in the Kondo lattices, Ce$_2$Au$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si$_3$

We report the results of magnetic measurements for the solid solution Ce$_2$Au$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si$_3$. The results reveal that this solid solution is characterized by a magnetic phase diagram (plot of magnetic transition temperature versus $x$) unusual for Kondo lattices. In particular, the spin-glass freezing induced by disorder is observed only for the compositions at the weak coupling limit; as one approaches the quantum critical point by a gradual replacement of Au by Co, this disorder effect is surprisingly suppressed in favor of long range antiferro-magnetic ordering in contrast to expectations. This unusual interplay between disorder, spin-glass freezing and the Kondo-effect calls for further refinement of theories on competition between magnetism and the Kondo effect.

Anisotropic Exchange in LiCuVO$_4$ probed by ESR

We investigated the paramagnetic resonance in single crystals of LiCuVO$_4$ with special attention to the angular variation of the absorption spectrum. To explain the large resonance linewidth of the order of 1 kOe, we analyzed the anisotropic exchange interaction in the chains of edge-sharing CuO$_6$ octahedra, taking into account the ring-exchange geometry of the nearest-neighbor coupling via two symmetric rectangular Cu-O bonds. The exchange parameters, which can be estimated from theoretical considerations, nicely agree with the parameters obtained from the angular dependence of the linewidth. The anisotropy of this magnetic ring exchange is found to be much larger than it is usually expected from conventional estimations which neglect the bonding geometry. Hence, the data yield the evidence that in copper oxides with edge-sharing structures the role of the orbital degrees of freedom is strongly enhanced. These findings establish LiCuVO$_4$ as one-dimensional compound at high temperatures. PACS: 76.30.-v, 76.30.Fc, 75.30.Et
