The excess wing in the dielectric loss of glass-forming ethanol: A relaxation process

A detailed dielectric investigation of liquid, supercooled liquid, and glassy ethanol reveals a third relaxation process, in addition to the two processes already known. The relaxation time of the newly detected process exhibits strong deviations from thermally activated behavior. Most important, this process is the cause of the apparent excess wing, which was claimed to be present in the dielectric loss spectra of glass-forming ethanol. In addition, marked deviations of the spectra of ethanol from the scaling proposed by Dixon and Nagel have been detected.

High-field AFMR in single-crystalline La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: Experimental evidence for the existence of a canted magnetic structure

High-field antiferromagnetic-resonance (AFMR) spectra were obtained in the frequency range 60 GHz < ν< 700 GHz and for magnetic fields up to 8 T in twin-free single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3. At low temperatures two antiferromagnetic modes were detected, which reveal different excitation conditions and magnetic field dependencies. No splitting of these modes was observed for any orientation of the static magnetic field excluding the phase-separation scenario for this composition. Instead, the full data set including the anisotropic magnetization can be well described using a two-sublattice model of a canted antiferromagnetic structure.

Scaling of broadband dielectric data of glass-forming liquids and plastic crystals

The Nagel-scaling and the modified scaling procedure proposed recently by Dendzik et al. have been applied to broadband dielectric data on two glass- forming liquids (glycerol and propylene carbonate) and three plastic crystals (ortho-carborane, meta-carborane, and 1-cyano-adamantane). Our data extend the upper limit of the abscissa range to considerably higher values than in previously published analyses. At the highest frequencies investigated, deviations from a single master curve show up which are most pronounced in the Dendzik-scaling plot. The loss curves of the plastic crystals do not scale in the Nagel-plot, but they fall onto a separate master curve in the Dendzik-plot. In addition, we address the question of a possible divergence of the static susceptibility near the Vogel-Fulcher temperature. For this purpose, the low-temperature evolution of the high-frequency wing of the dielectric loss peaks is investigated in detail. No convincing proof for such a divergence can be deduced from the present broadband data.

Universal relationship between the penetration depth and the normal-state conductivity in YBaCuO

The absolute values of the conductivity in the normal state sigma_n and of the low temperature penetration depths lambda(0) were measured for a number of different samples of the YBaCuO family. We found a striking correlation between sigma_n and 1/lambda^2, regardless of doping, oxygen reduction or defects, thus providing a simple method to predict the superconducting penetration depth and to have an estimate of the sample quality by measuring the normal-state conductivity.

ESR experiments in the Kondo insulator CeNiSn

Below a characteristic temperature, due to hybridisation effects Kondo insulators exhibit a gap in the electronic density of states and behave like semiconductors. By using Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR), the compound CeNiSn was investigated as a representative of this class. In addition, the metal-to-insulator transition was studied as a function of doping for CeNi(1-x)Co(x)Sn and CeNi(1-y)Pt(y)Sn. The linewidth of the Gd resonance yields direct information about the density of states at the Fermi energy. So the size of the gap can clearly be estimated for the pure compound, and the closing of the gap by substitution of Ni by Co or Pt can be followed in detail. These results are compared to measurements of NMR, specific heat and susceptibility.

Wide range dielectric spectroscopy on glass-forming materials: an experimental overview

Dielectric spectroscopy is one of the most commonly used techniques for the investigation of the dynamic response of glass-forming materials. The tremendous slow-down of the particle motions when approaching the glass transition and especially the fast processes in glass-forming materials, which have come into the focus of scientific interest recently, make the investigation in a wide frequency range highly desirable. Recently, results from broadband dielectric spectroscopy on glass-forming materials in their liquid and supercooled-liquid state, covering more than 18 decades of frequency have been reported by our group. In the present paper, we give an overview of the various experimental setups and techniques used to collect these spectra. As an example, spectra of the prototypical glass former glycerol are presented.

ESR study in lightly doped La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3)

This is the first systematic ESR investigation of La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3) single crystals for Sr concentrations x < 0.2. The rich phase diagram of this compound, which is dominated by the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn^(3+), is a matter of actual interest in connection with giant magnetoresistance phenomena. The ESR signal, which is due to both Mn^(3+) and Mn^(4+), directely probes the suppression of the Jahn-Teller distortion with increasing Sr concentration and reveals all characteristic structural and magnetic phase transitions.

Electron spin resonance study of Na_{1-x}Li_xV_2O_5

We measured X-band electron-spin resonance of single crystalline sodium vanadate doped with lithium, Na_{1-x}Li_xV_2O_5 for 0 < x < 1.3% . The phase transition into a dimerized phase that is observed at 34 K in the undoped compound, was found to be strongly suppressed upon doping with lithium. The spin susceptibility was analyzed to determine the transition temperature and the energy gap with respect to the lithium content. The transition temperature Tsp is suppressed following a square dependence of the lithium concentration while the energy gap is found to decrease linearly. At high temperatures (T>Tsp) the susceptibility remains nearly independent of doping.

Linear and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy on ammonium doped Rochelle salt

In this work we present a thorough investigation of the mixed system of Rochelle salt doped with ammonium, with 0<=x<=1 for [Na(K{1-x}(NH4)x)C4H4O6 * 4H2O]. This interesting system is known to exhibit a rich phase diagram with a variety of polar and non-polar phases. However, most of the earlier investigations date back many decades and the experimental advances made since then should enable new insight into the physical nature of its phase diagram. We studied single crystals of 18 doping concentrations using linear and non-linear frequency-dependent dielectric response spectroscopy. In the low field measurements a variety of relaxation features are detected and analyzed in detail. The results for two concentrations of x=0 and x=0.15 are described qualitatively with a simple model. Possibly the most important outcome of the present work is the detection of a new electrically ordered phase for concentrations 0.18<x<0.89.

Frequency dependent relaxation rate in the superconducting YBa2Cu3O{6+delta}

The submillimeter-wave 3 cm{-1} < nu < 35 cm{-1} complex conductivity of the reduced YBa2Cu3O{6+delta} film (Tc=56.5 K) was investigated for temperatures 4 K < T < 300 K and compared to the properties of the same film in the optimally doped state. The frequency dependence of the effective quasiparticle scattering rate 1/tau*(nu) was extracted from the spectra. 1/tau*(nu) is shown to be frequency independent at low frequencies and high temperatures. A gradual change to 1/tau*~nu^{1.5} law is observed as temperature decreases. In order to explain the observed temperature dependence of the low frequency spectral weight above Tc, the quasiparticle effective mass is supposed to be temperature dependent for T>Tc.

Electronic structure and magnetic interactions in LiV2O4

We present results of all-electron electronic structure calculations for the recently discovered d electron heavy fermion compound LiV_2O_4. The augmented spherical wave calculations are based on density functional theory within the local density approximation. The electronic properties near the Fermi energy originate almost exclusively from V 3d t_{2g} states, which fall into two equally occupied subbands: While sigma-type metal-metal bonding leads to rather broad bands, small pi-type p-d overlap causes a narrow peak at E_F. Without the geometric frustration inherent in the crystal structure, spin-polarized calculations reveal an antiferromagnetic ground state and ferromagnetic order at slightly higher energy. Since direct d-d exchange interaction plays only a minor role, ordering of the localized vanadium moments can be attributed exclusively to a rather weak superexchange interaction. With the magnetic order suppressed by the geometric frustration, the remaining spin fluctuations suggest an explanation of the low temperature behaviour of the specific heat.

Positive magnetoresistance and orbital ordering in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3)

We report on detailed transprort measurements of single crystalline La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (x<=0.2). We have found a giantpositive magnetoresistance in the compositions range between 0.1<=x<=0.125 and give an explaination in terms of orbital ordering due to the interplay between superexchange interactions and Jahn-Teller distortions.

The phase diagramm of La{1-x}Sr{x}MnO3 revisited

We report on detailed sucseptibility and magnetization studies in La{1-x}Sr{x}MnO3 for x<=0.2. We arrive at a phase diagram which shows a ferromagnetic ground state for 0.1<=x<=0.15 followed by a canted antiferromagnetic phase at higher temperatures, not in agreement with present canonical conjectures. The phase diagram indicates the importance of structural aspects and superexchange interactions for the magnetic phases at low Sr concentrations.

Broadband dielectric response of glycerol and propylene carbonate: a comparison

Dielectric data on glycerol and propylene carbonate covering 18 decades of frequency are presented and compared to each other. Both materials exhibit qualitatively similar behavior except for marked differences in the high-frequency region just below the boson peak. The results on both materials are consistent with the mode coupling theory of the glass transition.

Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy on Glass-Forming Propylene Carbonate

Dielectric spectroscopy covering more than 18 decades of frequency has been performed on propylene carbonate in its liquid and supercooled-liquid state. Using quasi-optic submillimeter and far-infrared spectroscopy the dielectric response was investigated up to frequencies well into the microscopic regime. We discuss the alpha-process whose characteristic timescale is observed over 14 decades of frequency and the excess wing showing up at frequencies some three decades above the peak frequency. Special attention is given to the high-frequency response of the dielectric loss in the crossover regime between alpha-peak and boson-peak. Similar to our previous results in other glass forming materials we find evidence for additional processes in the crossover regime. However, significant differences concerning the spectral form at high frequencies are found. We compare our results to the susceptibilities obtained from light scattering and to the predictions of various models of the glass transition.
