Magnetic field dependence of excitations near spin-orbital quantum criticality

The spinel FeSc$_2$S$_4$ has been proposed to realize a near-critical spin-orbital singlet (SOS) state, where entangled spin and orbital moments fluctuate in a global singlet state on the verge of spin and orbital order. Here we report powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements that observe the full bandwidth of magnetic excitations and we find that spin-orbital triplon excitations of an SOS state can capture well key aspects of the spectrum in both zero and applied magnetic fields up to 8.5 T. The observed shift of low-energy spectral weight to higher energies upon increasing applied field is naturally explained by the entangled spin-orbital character of the magnetic states, a behavior that is in strong contrast to spin-only singlet ground state systems, where the spin gap decreases upon increasing applied field.

Conductivity contrast and tunneling charge transport in the vortex-like ferroelectric domain patterns of multiferroic hexagonal YMnO3

We deduce the intrinsic conductivity properties of the ferroelectric domain walls around the topologically protected domain vortex cores in multiferroic YMnO3. This is achieved by performing a careful equivalent-circuit analysis of dielectric spectra measured in single-crystalline samples with different vortex densities. The conductivity contrast between the bulk domains and the less conducting domain boundaries is revealed to reach up to a factor 500 at room temperature, depending on sample preparation. Tunneling of localized defect charge carriers is the dominant charge-transport process in the domain walls that are depleted of mo-bile charge carriers. This work demonstrates that via equivalent-circuit analysis, dielectric spectroscopy can provide valuable information on the intrinsic charge-transport properties of ferroelectric domain walls, which is of high relevance for the design of new domain-wall-based microelectronic devices.

Structural, magnetic, electric, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of multiferroic GeV4S8

The lacunar spinel GeV4S8 undergoes orbital and ferroelectric ordering at the Jahn-Teller transition around 30 K and exhibits antiferromagnetic order below about 14 K. In addition to this orbitally driven ferroelectricity, lacunar spinels are an interesting material class, as the vanadium ions form V4 clusters representing stable molecular entities with a common electron distribution and a well-defined level scheme of molecular states resulting in a unique spin state per V4 molecule. Here we report detailed x-ray, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, thermal expansion, and dielectric results to characterize the structural, electric, dielectric, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of this interesting material, which also exhibits strong electronic correlations. From the magnetic susceptibility, we determine a negative Curie-Weiss temperature, indicative for antiferromagnetic exchange and a paramagnetic moment close to a spin S = 1 of the V4 molecular clusters. The low-temperature heat capacity provides experimental evidence for gapped magnon excitations. From the entropy release, we conclude about strong correlations between magnetic order and lattice distortions. In addition, the observed anomalies at the phase transitions also indicate strong coupling between structural and electronic degrees of freedom. Utilizing dielectric spectroscopy, we find the onset of significant dispersion effects at the polar Jahn-Teller transition. The dispersion becomes fully suppressed again with the onset of spin order. In addition, the temperature dependencies of dielectric constant and specific heat possibly indicate a sequential appearance of orbital and polar order.

Effect of adding nanometre-sized heterogeneities on the structural dynamics and the excess wing of a molecular glass former

We present the relaxation dynamics of glass-forming glycerol mixed with 1.1 nm sized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules using dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and two different neutron scattering (NS) techniques. Both, the reorientational dynamics as measured by DS and the density fluctuations detected by NS reveal a broadening of the alpha relaxation when POSS molecules are added. Moreover, we find a significant slowing down of the alpha-relaxation time. These effects are in accord with the heterogeneity scenario considered for the dynamics of glasses and supercooled liquids. The addition of POSS also affects the excess wing in glycerol arising from a secondary relaxation process, which seems to exhibit a dramatic increase in relative strength compared to the alpha-relaxation.

Singlet-triplet excitations and long range entanglement in the spin-orbital liquid candidate FeSc2S4

Theoretical models of the spin-orbital liquid (SOL) FeSc$_2$S$_4$ have predicted it to be in close proximity to a quantum critical point separating a spin-orbital liquid phase from a long-range ordered magnetic phase. Here, we examine the magnetic excitations of FeSc$_2$S$_4$ through time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures an excitation emerges that we attribute to a singlet-triplet excitation from the SOL ground state. A three-fold splitting of this excitation is observed as a function of applied magnetic field. As singlet-triplet excitations are forbidden in inversion symmetric pure spin systems, our results demonstrate the non-trivial character of the entangled spin-orbital singlet ground state. Using experimentally obtained parameters we compare to existing theoretical models to determine FeSc$_2$S$_4$'s proximity to the quantum critical point. In the context of these models, we estimate that the characteristic length of the singlet correlations to be $ξ/ (\textbf{a}/2) \approx 8.2$ (where $\textbf{a}/2$ is the nearest neighbor lattice constant) which establishes FeSc$_2$S$_4$ as a SOL with long-range entanglement.

On the multiferroic skyrmion-host GaV4S8

The lacunar spinel GaV4S8 exhibits orbital ordering at 44 K and shows a complex magnetic phase diagram below 12.7 K, which includes ferromagnetic and cycloidal spin order. At low but finite external magnetic fields, Néel-type skyrmions are formed in this material. Skyrmions are whirl-like spin vortices that have received great theoretical interest because of their non-trivial spin topology and that are also considered as basic entities for new data-storage technologies. Interestingly, we found that the orbitally ordered phase shows sizable ferroelectric polarization and that excess spin-driven polarizations appear in all magnetic phases, including the skyrmion-lattice phase. Hence, GaV4S8 shows simultaneous magnetic and polar order and belongs to the class of multiferroics, materials that attracted enormous attention in recent years. Here, we summarize the existing experimental information on the magnetic, electronic, and dielectric properties of GaV4S8. By performing detailed magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and dielectric experiments, we complement the low-temperature phase diagram. Specifically, we show that the low-temperature and low-field ground state of GaV4S8 seems to have a more complex spin configuration than purely collinear ferromagnetic spin order. In addition, at the structural Jahn-Teller transition the magnetic exchange interaction changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. We also provide experimental evidence that the vanadium V4 clusters in GaV4S8 can be regarded as molecular units with spin 1/2. However, at high temperatures deviations in the susceptibility show up, indicating that either the magnetic moments of the vanadium atoms fluctuate independently or excited states of the V4 molecule become relevant.

Fifth-order susceptibility unveils growth of thermodynamic amorphous order in glass-formers

Glasses are ubiquitous in daily life and technology. However the microscopic mechanisms generating this state of matter remain subject to debate: Glasses are considered either as merely hyper-viscous liquids or as resulting from a genuine thermodynamic phase transition towards a rigid state. We show that third- and fifth-order susceptibilities provide a definite answer to this longstanding controversy. Performing the corresponding high-precision nonlinear dielectric experiments for supercooled glycerol and propylene carbonate, we find strong support for theories based upon thermodynamic amorphous order. Moreover, when lowering temperature, we find that the growing transient domains are compact - that is their fractal dimension d_f = 3. The glass transition may thus represent a class of critical phenomena different from canonical second-order phase transitions for which d_f < 3.

Tuning orbital-selective correlation effects in superconducting Rb$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$

We report on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy on superconducting and metallic iron chalcogenides Rb$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$. The superconducting transition is reduced from $T_c=$ 32 K ($z=0$) to 22 K ($z=1.0$), and finally suppressed ($z=1.4$) by isoelectronic substitution of Se with S. Dielectric constant and optical conductivity exhibit a metal-to-insulator transition associated with an orbital-selective Mott phase. This orbital-selective Mott transition appears at higher temperature $T_{met}$ with increasing sulfur content, identifying sulfur substitution as an efficient parameter to tune orbital-dependent correlation effects in iron-chalcogenide superconductors. The reduced correlations of the $d_{xy}$ charge carriers can account for the suppression of the superconductivity and the pseudogap-like feature between $T_c$ and $T_{met}$ that was observed for $z=0$.

Influence of the FFLO-like State on the Upper Critical Field of a S/F Bilayer: Angular and Temperature Dependence

We investigated the upper critical magnetic field, $H_{c}$, of a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) bilayer of Nb/Cu$_{41}$Ni$_{59}$ and a Nb film (as reference). We obtained the dependence of $H_{c\perp}$ and $H_{c\parallel}$ (perpendicular and parallel to the film plane, respectively) on the temperature, $T$, by measurements of the resistive transitions and the dependence on the inclination angle, $θ$, of the applied field to the film plane, by non-resonant microwave absorption. Over a wide range, $H_{c\perp}$ and $H_{c\parallel}$ show the temperature dependence predicted by the Ginzburg-Landau theory. At low temperatures and close to the critical temperature deviations are observed. While $H_{c}(θ)$ of the Nb film follows the Tinkham prediction for thin superconducting films, the Nb/Cu$_{41}$Ni$_{59}$-bilayer data exhibit deviations when $θ$ approaches zero. We attribute this finding to the additional anisotropy induced by the quasi-one-dimensional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state and propose a new vortex structure in S/F bilayers, adopting the segmentation approach from high-temperature superconductors.

Impact of water on the charge transport of a glass-forming ionic liquid

Using dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, we have performed a detailed investigation of the influence of water uptake on the translational and reorientational glassy dynamics in the typical ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride. From a careful analysis of the measured dielectric permittivity and conductivity spectra, we find a significant acceleration of cation reorientation and a marked increase of the ionic conductivity for higher water contents. The latter effect mainly arises due to a strong impact of water content on the glass temperature, which for the well-dried material is found to be larger than any values reported in literature for this system. The fragility, characterizing the non-Arrhenius glassy dynamics of the ionic subsystem, also changes with varying water content. Decoupling of the ionic motion from the structural dynamics has to be considered to explain the results.

Evidence for a Ru$^{4+}$ Kondo Lattice in LaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$

Rare $d$-electron derived heavy-fermion properties of the solid-solution series LaCu$_3$Ru$_x$Ti$_{4-x}$O$_{12}$ were studied for $1 \leq x \leq 4$ by resistivity, susceptibility, specific-heat measurements, and magnetic-resonance techniques. The pure ruthenate ($x = 4$) is a heavy-fermion metal characterized by a resistivity proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures $T$. The coherent Kondo lattice formed by the localized Ru 4$d$ electrons is screened by the conduction electrons leading to strongly enhanced effective electron masses. By increasing titanium substitution the Kondo lattice becomes diluted resulting in single-ion Kondo properties like in the paradigm $4f$-based heavy-fermion compound Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Cu$_{2.05}$Si$_2$ [M. Ocko {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{64}, 195106 (2001)]. In LaCu$_3$Ru$_x$Ti$_{4-x}$O$_{12}$ the heavy-fermion behavior finally breaks down on crossing the metal-to-insulator transition close to $x = 2$.

Electromagnons, magnons, and phonons in Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$

Here we present a detailed study of the THz and FIR response of the mixed perovskite manganite system Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ for holmium concentrations x = 0.1 and 0.3. We compare the magnetic excitations of the four different magnetically ordered phases (A-type antiferromagnetic, sinusoidally modulated collinear, helical phases with spin planes perpendicular to the crystallographic a and c axes). The transition between the two latter phases goes hand in hand with a switching of the ferroelectric polarization from P||a to P||c. Special emphasis is paid to the temperature dependence of the excitations at this transition. We find a significant change of intensity indicating that the exchange striction mechanism cannot be the only mechanism to induce dipolar weight to spin-wave excitations. We also focus on excitations within the incommensurate collinear antiferromagnetic phase and find a so far unobserved excitation close to 40 cm$^{-1}$. A detailed analysis of optical weight gives a further unexpected result: In the multiferroic phase with P||c all the spectral weight of the electromagnons comes from the lowest phonon mode. However, for the phase with the polarization P||a additional spectral weight must be transferred from higher frequencies.

Magnetic phase diagram of the helimagnetic spinel compound ZnCr2Se4 revisited by small-angle neutron scattering

We performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the helimagnetic spinel compound ZnCr2Se4. The ground state of this material is a multi-domain spin-spiral phase, which undergoes domain selection in a magnetic field and reportedly exhibits a transition to a proposed spin-nematic phase at higher fields. We observed a continuous change in the magnetic structure as a function of field and temperature, as well as a weak discontinuous jump in the spiral pitch across the domain-selection transition upon increasing field. From our SANS results we have established the absence of any long-range magnetic order in the high-field (spin-nematic) phase. We also found that all the observed phase transitions are surprisingly isotropic with respect to the field direction.

Nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy in a fragile plastic crystal

In this work we provide a thorough examination of the nonlinear dielectric properties of a succinonitrile-glutaronitrile mixture, representing one of the rare example of a plastic crystal with fragile glassy dynamics. The detected alteration of the complex dielectric permittivity under high fields can be explained considering the heterogeneous nature of glassy dynamics and a field-induced variation of entropy. While the first mechanism was also found in structural glass formers, the latter effect seems to be typical for plastic crystals. Morover, the third harmonic component of the dielectric susceptibility is reported, revealing a spectral shape as predicted for cooperative molecular dynamics. In accord with the fragile nature of the glass transition in this plastic crystal, we deduce a relatively strong temperature dependence of the number of correlated molecules, in contrast to the much weaker temperature dependence in plastic-crystalline cyclo-octanol, whose glass transition is of strong nature.

Multiferroicity and skyrmions carrying electric polarization in GaV4S8

Skyrmions are whirl like topological spin objects with high potential for future magnetic data storage. It is a fundamental question, relevant for both basic research and application, if a ferroelectric (FE) polarization can be associated with their magnetic texture and if these objects can be manipulated by electric fields. Here, we study the interplay between magnetism and electric polarization in the lacunar spinel GaV4S8, which undergoes a structural transition associated with orbital ordering at 44 K and reveals a complex magnetic phase diagram below 13 K, including a ferromagnetic (FM), cycloidal, and Néel-type skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase. We found that the orbitally ordered phase of GaV4S8 is FE with a sizable polarization of ~1 μC/cm2. Moreover, we observed spin-driven excess polarizations in all magnetic phases and, hence, GaV4S8 hosts three different multiferroic phases with coexisting polar and magnetic order. These include the SkL phase where we predict a strong spatial modulation of the FE polarization close to the skyrmion cores. By taking into account the crystal symmetry and spin patterns of the magnetically ordered phases, we identify the exchange striction as the main microscopic mechanism behind the spin-driven FE polarization in each multiferroic phase. Since GaV4S8 is unique among the known SkL host materials due to its polar crystal structure and the observed strong magnetoelectric effect, this study is an important step towards the non-dissipative electric-field control of skyrmions.

Polar Dynamics at the Jahn-Teller Transition in Ferroelectric GaV4S8

We present a dielectric spectroscopy study of the polar dynamics linked to the orbitally driven ferroelectric transition in the skyrmion host GaV4S8. By combining THz and MHz-GHz spectroscopy techniques, we succeed in detecting the relaxational dynamics arising from coupled orbital and polar fluctuations in this material and traced its temperature dependence in the paraelectric as well as in the ferroelectric phase. The relaxation time significantly increases when approaching the critical temperature from both sides of the transition. It is natural to assume that these polar fluctuations map the orbital dynamics at the Jahn-Teller transition. Due to the first-order character of the orbital-ordering transition, the relaxation time shows an enormous jump of about five orders of magnitude at the polar and structural phase transition.

MFU-type metal-organic frameworks as host materials of confined supercooled liquids

In this work we examine the use of metal-organic framework (MOF) systems as host materials for the investigation of glassy dynamics in confined geometry. We investigate the confinement of the molecular glass former glycerol in three MFU-type MOFs with different pore sizes and study the dynamics of the confined liquid via dielectric spectroscopy. In accord with previous reports on confined glass formers, we find different degrees of deviations from bulk behavior depending on pore size, demonstrating that MOFs are well-suited host systems for confinement investigations.

Dielectric Spectroscopy on Organic Charge-Transfer Salts

This Topical Review provides an overview of the dielectric properties of a variety of organic charge-transfer salts, based on both, data reported in literature and our own experimental results. Moreover, we discuss in detail the different processes that can contribute to the dielectric response of these materials. We concentrate on the family of the one-dimensional (TMTTF)2X systems and the two-dimensional BEDT-TTF-based charge-transfer salts, which in recent years have attracted considerable interest due to their often intriguing dielectric properties. We will mainly focus on the occurrence of electronic ferroelectricity in these systems, which also includes examples of multiferroicity.
