Multiferroicity in the Mott Insulating Charge-Transfer Salt κ-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl

The recently proposed multiferroic state of the charge-transfer salt κ-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl [P. Lunkenheimer et al., Nature Mater., vol. 11, pp. 755-758, Sept. 2012] has been studied by dc-conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and measurements of the dielectric constant on various, differently prepared single crystals. In the majority of crystals we confirm the existence of an order-disorder-type ferroelectric state which coincides with antiferromagnetic order. This phenomenology rules out scenarios which consider an inhomogeneous, short-range-ordered ferroelectric state. Measurements of the dielectric constant and the magnetic susceptibility on the same crystals reveal that both transitions lie very close to each other or even collapse, indicating that both types of order are intimately coupled to each other. We address issues of the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant ε' and the dielectric loss ε'' and discuss sample-to-sample variations.

Supercooled-liquid and plastic-crystalline state in succinonitrile-glutaronitrile mixtures

We report a thorough characterization of the glassy phases of mixtures of succinonitrile and glutaronitrile via dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. This system is revealed to be one of the rare examples where both glassy states of matter, a structurally disordered supercooled liquid and an orientationally disordered plastic crystal, can be prepared in the same material. Both disordered states can be easily supercooled, finally arriving at a structural-glass or a glassy-crystal state. Detailed investigations using broadband dielectric spectroscopy enable a comparison of the glassy dynamics in both phases. Just as previously demonstrated for supercooled-liquid and plastic-crystalline ethanol, our experiments reveal very similar relaxational behavior and glass temperatures of both disordered states. Thus the prominent role of orientational degrees of freedom in the glass transition, suggested on the basis of the findings for ethanol, is fully corroborated by the present work. Moreover, the fragilities of both phases are determined and compared for different mixtures. The findings can be well understood within an energy-landscape based explanation of fragility.

Spin correlations and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$

We report on electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the spin relaxation in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. The main source of the ESR linewidth at temperatures $T \leq 150$ K is attributed to the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The vector components of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are determined from the angular dependence of the ESR spectra using a high-temperature approximation. Both the angular and temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth have been analyzed using a self-consistent quantum-mechanical approach. In addition analytical expressions based on a quasi-classical picture for spin fluctuations are derived, which show good agreement with the quantum-approach for temperatures $T \geq 2J/k_{\rm B} \approx 15$ K. A small modulation of the ESR linewidth observed in the $ac$-plane is attributed to the anisotropic Zeeman interaction, which reflects the two magnetically nonequivalent Cu positions.

Orbital-selective metal-insulator transition and gap formation above Tc in superconducting Rb1-xFe2-ySe2

We report on a hierarchy of temperatures Tc < Tgap < Tmet in superconducting Rb1-xFe2-ySe2 observed by THz spectroscopy. Above Tmet = 90 K the material reveals semiconducting characteristics. Below Tmet a coherent metallic THz response emerges. This metal-to-insulator type, orbital selective transition is clearly indicated by an isosbestic point in the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity and dielectric constant at THz-frequencies. At Tgap = 61 K a gap opens in the THz regime and then the superconducting transition occurs at Tc = 32 K. This sequence of temperatures seems to reflect a corresponding hierarchy of the electronic correlations in the different bands.

Spatial Inhomogeneity of the Superconducting Gap and Order Parameter in FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6}

We have performed a low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} with T_{C}~14 K. Spatially resolved measurements of the superconducting gap reveal substantial inhomogeneity on a nanometer length scale. Analysis of the structure of the gap seen in tunneling spectra by comparison with calculated spectra for different superconducting order parameters (s-wave, d-wave, and anisotropic s-wave) yields the best agreement for an order parameter with anisotropic s-wave symmetry with an anisotropy of ~40%. The temperature dependence of the superconducting gap observed in places with large and small gap size indicates that it is indeed the superconducting transition temperature which is inhomogeneous. The temperature dependence of the gap size is substantially larger than would be expected from BCS theory. An analysis of the local gap size in relation with the local chemical composition shows almost no correlation with the local concentration of Se-/Te-atoms at the surface.

Exciton-magnon transitions in the frustrated chromium antiferromagnets CuCrO2, alpha-CaCr2O4, CdCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4

We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to magnon sidebands by comparison with neutron scattering results. The temperature dependence of the line width of the most intense sidebands in both compounds can be described by an Arrhenius law. For CuCrO2 the sideband associated with the 4A2 -> 2T2 transition can be observed even above T_N. Its line width does not show a kink at the magnetic ordering temperature and can alternatively be described by a Z2 vortex scenario proposed previously for similar materials. The exciton-magnon features in alpha-CaCr2O4 are more complex due to the orthorhombic distortion. While for CdCr2O4 magnon sidebands are identified below T_N and one sideband excitation is found to persist across the magnetic ordering transition, only a weak fine structure related to magnetic ordering has been observed in ZnCr2O4.

Low-energy magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 chain compound SrNi2V2O8

Multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) transmission spectra have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field on single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 chain compound SrNi2V2O8 in the GHz frequency range. Magnetic resonance modes above 50 K have been observed with an effective g-factor of 2.24 at 100 K. Below 30 K, intra-triplet excitations have been observed in the ESR spectra, which reveal the presence of single-ion anisotropy with D = -0.29 meV.

Magnetic-field induced multiferroicity in a quantum critical frustrated spin liquid

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to check for the onset of polar order in the quasi one-dimensional quantum spin system Sul-Cu2Cl4 when passing from the spin-liquid state into the ordered spiral phase in an external magnetic field. We find clear evidence for multiferroicity in this material and treat in detail its H-T phase diagram close to the quantum-critical regime.

Unconventional magnetostructural transition in CoCr2O4 at high magnetic fields

The magnetic-field and temperature dependencies of ultrasound propagation and magnetization of single-crystalline CoCr2O4 have been studied in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 14 T and 62 T, respectively. Distinct anomalies with significant changes in the sound velocity and attenuation are found in this spinel compound at the onset of long-range incommensurate spiral-spin order at T_s = 27 K and at the transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate state at T_l = 14 K, evidencing strong spin-lattice coupling. While the magnetization evolves gradually with field, steplike increments in the ultrasound clearly signal a transition into a new magneto-structural state between 6.2 and 16.5 K and at high magnetic fields. We argue that this is a high-symmetry phase with only the longitudinal component of the magnetization being ordered, while the transverse helical component remains disordered. This phase is metastable in an extended H-T phase space.

Debye relaxation and 250 K anomaly in glass forming monohydroxy alcohols

A previous dielectric, near-infrared (NIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance study on the hydrogen-bonded liquid 2-ethyl-1-hexanol [C. Gainaru et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 118304 (2011)] revealed anomalous behavior in various static quantities near 250 K. To check whether corresponding observations can be made for other monohydroxy alcohols as well, these experimental methods were applied to such substances with 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 carbon atoms in their molecular backbone. All studied liquids exhibit a change of behavior near 250 K which is tentatively ascribed to effects of hydrogen bond cooperativity. By analyzing the NIR band intensities, a linear cluster size is derived that agrees with estimates from dielectric spectroscopy. All studied alcohols, except 4-methyl-3-heptanol, display a dominant Debye-like peak. Furthermore, neat 2-ethyl-1-butanol exhibits a well resolved structural relaxation in its dielectric loss spectrum which so far has only been observed for diluted monohydroxy alcohols.

Nonlinear dielectric response at the excess wing of glass-forming liquids

We present nonlinear dielectric measurements of glass-forming glycerol and propylene carbonate applying electrical fields up to 671 kV/cm. The measurements extend to sufficiently high frequencies to allow for the investigation of the nonlinear behavior in the regime of the so-far mysterious excess wing, showing up in the loss spectra of many glass formers as a second power law at high frequencies. Surprisingly, we find a complete lack of nonlinear behavior in the excess wing, in marked contrast to the alpha-relaxation where, in agreement with previous reports, a strong increase of dielectric constant and loss is found.

THz spectroscopy in the pseudo-Kagome system Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Br

Terahertz (THz) transmission spectra have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field on single crystals of Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Br. In the time-domain THz spectra without magnetic field, two resonance absorptions are observed below the magnetic ordering temperature T_N~27.4 K. The corresponding resonance frequencies increase with decreasing temperature and reach energies of 1.28 and 1.23 meV at 3.5 K. Multi-frequency electron spin resonance transmission spectra as a function of applied magnetic field show the field dependence of four magnetic resonance modes, which can be modeled as a ferromagnetic resonance including demagnetization and anisotropy effects.

Magnetic ground state and 2D behavior in pseudo-Kagome layered system Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Br

Anisotropic magnetic properties of a layered kagome-like system Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Br have been studied by bulk magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. At T_N = 27.4 K the system develops an alternating antiferromagnetic order of (ab) layers, which individually exhibit canted ferrimagnetic moment arrangement, resulting from the competing ferro- and antiferro-magnetic intralayer exchange interactions. A magnetic field B_C ~ 0.8 T applied along the c axis (perpendicular to the layers) triggers a metamagnetic transition, when every second layer flips, i.e., resulting in a ferrimagnetic structure. Significantly higher fields are required to rotate the ferromagnetic component towards the b axis (~7 T) or towards the a axis (~15 T). The estimates of the exchange coupling constants and features indicative of an XY character of this quasi-2D system are presented.

Ions in glass forming glycerol: Close correlation of alpha and fast beta relaxation

We provide broadband dielectric loss spectra of glass-forming glycerol with varying additions of LiCl. The measurements covering frequencies up to 10 THz extend well into the region of the fast beta process, commonly ascribed to caged molecule dynamics. Aside of the known variation of the structural alpha relaxation time and a modification of the excess wing with ion content, we also find a clear influence on the shallow loss minimum arising from the fast beta relaxation. Within the framework of mode-coupling theory, the detected significant broadening of this minimum is in reasonable accord with the found variation of the alpha-relaxation dynamics. A correlation between alpha-relaxation rate and minimum position holds for all ion concentrations and temperatures, even below the critical temperature defined by mode-coupling theory.

Electron spin resonance and exchange paths in the orthorhombic dimer system Sr2VO4

We report on magnetization and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of Sr$_{2}$VO$_4$ with orthorhombic symmetry. In this dimer system the $V^{4+}$ ions are in tetrahedral environment and are coupled by an antiferromagnetic intra-dimer exchange constant $J/k_B \approx$ 100 K to form a singlet ground state without any phase transitions between room temperature and 2 K. Based on an extended-Hückel-Tight-Binding analysis we identify the strongest exchange interaction to occur between two inequivalent vanadium sites via two intermediate oxygen ions. The ESR absorption spectra can be well described by a single Lorentzian line with an effective g-factor $g$ = 1.89. The temperature dependence of the ESR intensity is well described by a dimer model in agreement with the magnetization data. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth can be modeled by a superposition of a linear increase with temperature with a slope $α$ = 1.35 Oe/K and a thermally activated behavior with an activation energy $Δ/k_B$ = 1418 K, both of which point to spin-phonon coupling as the dominant relaxation mechanism in this compound.

Korringa-like relaxation in the high-temperature phase of A-site ordered YBaMn2O6

We report on high-temperature electron spin resonance studies of A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 and disordered Y0.5Ba0.5MnO3. In the disordered sample we find that the linewidth is governed by spin-spin relaxation processes as in many other manganite systems. In contrast we find a Korringa-like spin relaxation with a slope of about 1 Oe/K above the charge-ordering transition and extending up to 930K in the metal ordered YBaMn2O6 samples. A Korringa-law is a clear feature of a truly metallic state, pointing to an unconventional high-temperature phase of these ordered manganites. In agreement with the ESR intensity this suggests that in the metallic high-temperature phase the ESR signal stems from Mn^4+ core spins which relax via the quasi-delocalized e_g electrons.

Nanoscale layering of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Rb2Fe4Se5

We studied phase separation in a single-crystalline antiferromagnetic superconductor Rb2Fe4Se5 (RFS) using a combination of scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and low-energy muon spin rotation (LE-μSR). We demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases segregate into nanometer-thick layers perpendicular to the iron-selenide planes, while the characteristic in-plane size of the metallic domains reaches 10 μm. By means of LE-μSR we further show that in a 40-nm thick surface layer the ordered antiferromagnetic moment is drastically reduced, while the volume fraction of the paramagnetic phase is significantly enhanced over its bulk value. Self-organization into a quasiregular heterostructure indicates an intimate connection between the modulated superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases.

Infrared phonons and specific heat in Ba3Cr2O8

We report on the phonon spectrum of Ba3Cr2O8 determined by infrared spectroscopy, and on specific heat measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Phonon modes split below the Jahn-Teller transition, which occurs at T_{JT} = 70 K as detected by specific heat measurements. The field-dependent specific heat data is analyzed in terms of the contributions from lattice, magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom. In contrast to the isostructural compound Sr3Cr2O8 our analysis does not indicate the existence of orbital fluctuations below the Jahn-Teller transition in Ba3Cr2O8.
