Experimental demonstration of Flying-Focus enhanced Thomson scattering

We report the experimental demonstration of a spatiotemporally engineered "Flying-Focus" laser pulse for enhanced x-ray generation in relativistic Thomson scattering. A combination of longitudinal chromatic aberration, angular dispersion, and group delay dispersion was applied to an ultrashort relativistically intense laser pulse to control the motion of its focal point. Precise tuning of the group delay dispersion was used to match the velocity of the focus to the trajectory of a counterpropagating electron bunch, produced by a laser wakefield accelerator. This prolonged the Thomson scattering interaction while reducing nonlinear effects, leading to an enhanced x-ray yield. The approach has the potential to increase the spectral density and brightness of the x-ray beam by orders of magnitude compared to equivalent focusing without spatiotemporal control. This experiment establishes a new technique for structured-light control at high intensity, demonstrating the realization of dynamic intensity structures that enhance light-matter interactions and for the generation of ultra-bright radiation sources.

Beyond the CDMS-II Dark Matter Search: SuperCDMS

Presently the CDMS-II collaboration's Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search at the Soudan Underground Laboratory sets the most stringent exclusion limits of any WIMP cold dark matter direct-detection experiment. To extend our reach further, to WIMP-nucleon cross sections in the range $10^{-46} - 10^{-44}$cm$^2$, we propose SuperCDMS, which would take advantage of a very deep site. One promising site is the recently approved SNOLab facility in Canada. In this paper we will present our overall plan, identify primary issues, and set the goals that need to be met prior to embarking upon each phase of SuperCDMS.

The Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector and LAMPF Neutrino Source

A search for neutrino oscillations of the type nu_bar_mu to nu_bar_e has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using nu_bar_mu from muon decay at rest. Evidence for this transition has been reported previously. This paper discusses in detail the experimental setup, detector operation and neutrino source, including aspects relevant to oscillation searches in the muon decay-at-rest and pion decay in flight channels.

Candidate Events in a Search for Muon Antineutrino to Electron Antineutrino Oscillations

A search for $\nuebar$'s in excess of the number expected from conventional sources has been made using the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector, located 30 m from a proton beam dump at LAMPF. A $\nuebar$ signal was detected via the reaction $\nuebar\,p \rightarrow e^{+}\,n$ with $e^+$ energy between 36 and $60\mev$, followed by a $\gamma$ from $np\rightarrow d\gamma$ ($2.2\mev$). Using strict cuts to identify $\gamma$'s correlated with positrons results in a signal of 9 events, with an expected background of $2.1 \pm 0.3$. A likelihood fit to the entire $e^+$ sample yields a total excess of $16.4^{+9.7}_{-8.9}\pm 3.3$ events, where the second uncertainty is systematic. If this excess is attributed to neutrino oscillations of the type $\numubar\rightarrow\nuebar$, it corresponds to an oscillation probability of ($0.34^{+0.20}_{-0.18}\pm 0.07$)\%.
