Perturbation of Traveling Boussinesq Solitons by Periodic Bathymetry

We investigate the perturbations induced by a periodic bathymetry on traveling Boussinesq solitons in a two-dimensional configuration. We present two perturbation approaches to solve the nonlinear, dispersive and non-autonomous differential equations of the model and compare the solutions with numerical simulations of the original system of equations. In the approximation for small periodic corrugations we built the solutions as modulated traveling waves using Fourier series. The coefficients of the series are solved using the Green function method and the pathordered exponential method. At the second order in the relative height of bed corrugations, we obtain the perturbation as the fourth-order linear dispersive waves generated by the modulated traveling soliton in its wake. In the second approach, we rewrite the Boussinesq system into a perturbed Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) nonlinear equation, and obtain the corresponding perturbed solitons. These analytic solutions are compared with the results of numerical simulations, for various parameters that characterize the effects of nonlinearity, dispersion, and bottom bathymetry. We also discuss the stability of the perturbed solitons in time. The perturbation approaches developed in this study are valid for any type of periodic bathymetries, and the method can readily be extended to non-periodic ones.

Model for self-organized Leidenfrost rotating polygons as cnoidal waves

The remarkable appearance of self-organized regular and peaked polygonal rotating patterns in shallow Leidenfrost rings is investigated as a balance between surface tension geometry and nonlinear terms of Euler equation. Using the Boussinesq shallow convection approximation and a specialized expansion of the Laplace equation solutions, we derive a nonlinear equation that can be integrated in terms of elliptic functions. The model rigorously accounts for surface tension, the contribution of the poloidal rolling vortex, and the interplay between buoyancy-driven and thermocapillary flows. We obtain cnoidal waves solutions describing the dynamics of the inner free surface of the Leidenfrost ring, to predict polygonal patterns in liquid nitrogen. These predictions are compared with experimental observations.Additionally, we introduce a simplified model based on poloidal averaging of the capillary pressure, leading to a Korteweg-de Vries-type equation. This simplified model not only reproduces the cnoidal wave solutions but also predicts new trigonometric solutions, offering insights into the formation of peaked polygons.

Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation Solitons on Quantum Droplets

Irrotational ow of a spherical thin liquid layer surrounding a rigid core is described using the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Accordingly, azimuthal moving nonlinear waves are modeled by periodic dark solitons expressed by elliptic functions. In the quantum regime the algebraic Bethe ansatz is used in order to capture the energy levels of such motions, which we expect to be relevant for the dynamics of the nuclear clusters in deformed heavy nuclei surface modeled by quantum liquid drops. In order to validate the model we match our theoretical energy spectra with experimental results on energy, angular momentum and parity for alpha particle clustering nuclei.

Experimental study of breathers and rogue waves generated by random waves over non-uniform bathymetry

Experimental results describing random, uni-directional, long crested, water waves over non-uniform bathymetry confirm the formation of stable coherent wave packages traveling with almost uniform group velocity. The waves are generated with JONSWAP spectrum for various steepness, height and constant period. A set of statistical procedures were applied to the experimental data, including the space and time variation of kurtosis, skewness, BFI, Fourier and moving Fourier spectra, and probability distribution of wave heights. Stable wave packages formed out of the random field and traveling over shoals, valleys and slopes were compared with exact solutions of the NLS equation resulting in good matches and demonstrating that these packages are very similar to deep water breathers solutions, surviving over the non-uniform bathymetry. We also present events of formation of rogue waves over those regions where the BFI, kurtosis and skewness coefficients have maximal values.

The Counterfactual Photoelectric Effect

We explore a counterfactual protocol for energy transfer. A modified version of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer dissociates a photon's position and energy into separate channels, resulting in a photoelectric effect in one channel without the absorption of a photon. We use the quantum Zeno effect to extend our results by recycling the same photon through the system and obtain a stream of photoelectrons. If dissociation of properties such as energy can be demonstrated experimentally, there may be a variety of novel energy-related applications that may arise from the capacity to do non-local work. The dissociation of intrinsic properties, like energy, from elementary particles may also lead to theoretical discussions of the constitution of quantum objects.

Non-compact manifolds with Killing spinors

We present a result for non-compact manifolds with invertible Dirac operator, where we link the presence of a massless Killing spinor, with a harmonic, closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor, if one exists for the specic manifold. A couple of examples are introduced.

Almost-BPS solutions in multi-center Taub-NUT

Microstates of colinear black holes embedded in a multi-center Taub-NUT spacetime are sought in 4 dimensions. A set of coupled ordinary partial differential equations are obtained and solved for almost-BPS states, where some supersymmetry is preserved in the context of N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions. The regularity of solutions is being carefully considered and we ensure that no CTC (closed time-like curves) are present. The larger framework is that of 11-dimensional N=2 supergravity and the current theory is obtained by compactifying down to 4 dimensions.

Nonlinear Decelerator for Payloads in Aerial Delivery Systems. I: Design and Testing

We study the dynamics and the optimization of the shock deceleration supported by a payload when its airborne carrier impacts the ground. We build a nonlinear elastic model for a container prototype and an elastic suspension system for the payload. We model the dynamics of this system and extract information on maximum deceleration, energy transfer between the container and payload, and energy resonant damping. We designed the system and perform lab experiments for various terminal velocities and types of grounds (cement, grass, sand water, etc.). The results are compared with the theoretical model and results are commented, including predictions for deceleration at different types of ground impact. The results can be used for aerial delivery systems, splash-down of capsules, recoveries, weather balloons, coastal surveying systems, or the new introduced goal-line technology in sport competitions.

Experimental and theoretical studies on visible light attenuation in water

In this study we describe lab experiments on determining the above water reflectance Rrs coefficient, and the water attenuation coefficient Kd for fresh water. Different types of screens (totally absorbent, gray, etc.) were submerged in water (0-0.6 m) and illuminated from outside. The spectral density of the water leaving radiance was measured for different depths. The results were ran by a code which took into account the geometry of the incident irradiation, the geometry of the screen under water, and boundary conditions at the water surface provided by the radiation transfer theory. From the experimental data and our model we obtain the spectral distribution of the attenuation coefficient for fresh water and compared it with other data in literature. These experiments, performed in the Nonlinear Wave Lab at ERAU# represent just a preliminary calibration of the experimental protocol. More tests with water of different degrees of turbidity, and possibly wave filed at the water surface are in progress and will be presented in a forthcoming paper.

Scaling analyses based on wavelet transforms for the Talbot effect

The fractal properties of the transverse Talbot images are analysed with two well-known scaling methods, the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) and the wavelet transform multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (WT-MFDFA). We use the widths of the singularity spectra, Delta alpha=alpha_H-alpha_min, as a characteristic feature of these Talbot images. The tau scaling exponents of the q moments are linear in q within the two methods, which proves the monofractality of the transverse diffractive paraxial field in the case of these images

Geometry of Axoneme-like Filament Bundles

We develop a formalism that describes the bending and twisting of axoneme-like filament bundles. We obtain general formulas to determine the relative sliding between any arbitrary filaments in a bundle subjected to unconstrained deformations. Particular examples for bending, twisting, helical and toroidal shapes, and combinations of these are discussed. Resulting equations for sliding and transversal shifting, expressed in terms of the curvature and torsion of the bundle, are applied to flagellar bend data. We prove that simultaneous combination of twisting and bending can produce a drastically drop in the sliding, by decreasing bending rigidity.

Dynamics of Immobilized Flagella

Although the auger-like 'swimming' motility of the African trypanosome was described upon its discovery over one hundred years ago, the precise biomechanical and biophysical properties of trypanosome flagellar motion has not been elucidated. In this study, we describe five different modes of flagellar beat/wave patterns in African trypanosomes by microscopically examining the flagellar movements of chemically tethered cells. The dynamic nature of the different beat/wave patterns suggests that flagellar motion in Trypanosoma brucei is a complex mixture of oscillating waves, rigid bends, helical twists and non-linear waves. Interestingly, we have observed soliton-like depression waves along the flagellar membrane, suggesting a nonlinear mechanism for the dynamics of this system. The physical model is inspired by the 2-dimensional elastic dynamics of a beam, and by taking into account uniform distribution of molecular motors torque and nonlinear terms in the curvature.

Analysis and classification of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations in the potential representation

A potential representation for the subset of traveling solutions of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations is introduced. The procedure involves a reduction of a third order partial differential equation to a first order ordinary differential equation. In this representation it can be shown that solitons and solutions with compact support only exist in systems with linear or quadratic dispersion, respectively. In particular, this article deals with so the called K(n,m) equations. It is shown that these equations can be classified according to a simple point transformation. As a result, all equations that allow for soliton solutions join the same equivalence class with the Korteweg-deVries equation being its representative.

Generalized Nonlinear Equation and Solutions for Fluid Contour Deformations

We generalize the nonlinear one-dimensional equation for a fluid layer surface to any geometry and we introduce a new infinite order differential equation for its traveling solitary waves solutions. This equation can be written as a finite-difference expression, with a general solution that is a power series expansion with coefficients satisfying a nonlinear recursion relation. In the limit of long and shallow water, we recover the Korteweg-de Vries equation together with its single-soliton solution.

Laplace transform of spherical Bessel functions

We provide a simple analytic formula in terms of elementary functions for the Laplace transform j_{l}(p) of the spherical Bessel function than that appearing in the literature, and we show that any such integral transform is a polynomial of order l in the variable p with constant coefficients for the first l-1 powers, and with an inverse tangent function of argument 1/p as the coefficient of the power l. We apply this formula for the Laplace transform of the memory function related to the Langevin equation in a one-dimensional Debye model.

Solitons and wavelets: Scale analysis and bases

We use a one-scale similarity analysis which gives specific relations between the velocity, amplitude and width of localized solutions of nonlinear differential equations, whose exact solutions are generally difficult to obtain. We also introduce kink-antikink compact solutions for the nonlinear-nonlinear dispersion K(2,2) equation, and we construct a basis of scaling functions similar with those used in the multiresolution analysis. These approaches are useful in describing nonlinear structures and patterns, as well as in the derivation of the time evolution of initial data for nonlinear equations with finite wavelength soliton solutions.

Similarity Analysis of Nonlinear Equations and Bases of Finite Wavelength Solitons

We introduce a generalized similarity analysis which grants a qualitative description of the localised solutions of any nonlinear differential equation. This procedure provides relations between amplitude, width, and velocity of the solutions, and it is shown to be useful in analysing nonlinear structures like solitons, dublets, triplets, compact supported solitons and other patterns. We also introduce kink-antikink compact solutions for a nonlinear-nonlinear dispersion equation, and we construct a basis of finite wavelength functions having self-similar properties.
