Improved cosmological constraints from a joint analysis of the SDSS-II and SNLS supernova samples

We present cosmological constraints from a joint analysis of type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observations obtained by the SDSS-II and SNLS collaborations. The data set includes several low-redshift samples (z<0.1), all 3 seasons from the SDSS-II (0.05 < z < 0.4), and 3 years from SNLS (0.2 <z < 1) and totals \ntotc spectroscopically confirmed type Ia supernovae with high quality light curves. We have followed the methods and assumptions of the SNLS 3-year data analysis except for the following important improvements: 1) the addition of the full SDSS-II spectroscopically-confirmed SN Ia sample in both the training of the SALT2 light curve model and in the Hubble diagram analysis (\nsdssc SNe), 2) inter-calibration of the SNLS and SDSS surveys and reduced systematic uncertainties in the photometric calibration, performed blindly with respect to the cosmology analysis, and 3) a thorough investigation of systematic errors associated with the SALT2 modeling of SN Ia light-curves. We produce recalibrated SN Ia light-curves and associated distances for the SDSS-II and SNLS samples. The large SDSS-II sample provides an effective, independent, low-z anchor for the Hubble diagram and reduces the systematic error from calibration systematics in the low-z SN sample. For a flat LCDM cosmology we find Omega_m=0.295+-0.034 (stat+sys), a value consistent with the most recent CMB measurement from the Planck and WMAP experiments. Our result is 1.8sigma (stat+sys) different than the previously published result of SNLS 3-year data. The change is due primarily to improvements in the SNLS photometric calibration. When combined with CMB constraints, we measure a constant dark-energy equation of state parameter w=-1.018+-0.057 (stat+sys) for a flat universe. Adding BAO distance measurements gives similar constraints: w=-1.027+-0.055.

Enhanced quasiparticle dynamics of quantum well states: the giant Rashba system BiTeI and topological insulators

In the giant Rashba semiconductor BiTeI electronic surface scattering with Lorentzian linewidth is observed that shows a strong dependence on surface termination and surface potential shifts. A comparison with the topological insulator Bi2Se3 evidences that surface confined quantum well states are the origin of these processes. We notice an enhanced quasiparticle dynamics of these states with scattering rates that are comparable to polaronic systems in the collision dominated regime. The Eg symmetry of the Lorentzian scattering contribution is different from the chiral (RL) symmetry of the corresponding signal in the topological insulator although both systems have spin-split surface states.

AgCuVO4: a quasi one-dimensional S = 1/2 chain compound

We present a joint experimental and computational study of the recently synthesized spin 1/2 system silver-copper-orthovanadate AgCuVO4 [A. Möller and J. Jainski, Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 634, 1669 (2008)] exhibiting chains of trans corner-sharing [CuO4] plaquettes. The static magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements of AgCuVO4 can be described to a good approximation by the Bonner-Fisher spin-chain model with J_intra ~ 330 K. Evidence for a Neel type of order at ~ 2.5 K is obtained from the specific heat and corroborated by ESR studies. To independently obtain a microscopically based magnetic model, density functional electronic structure calculations were performed. In good agreement with the experimental data, we find pronounced one-dimensional magnetic exchange along the corner-sharing chains with small inter-chain couplings. The difference between the experimentally observed and the calculated ordering temperature can be assigned to a sizable inter-chain frustration derived from the calculations.

Strong Magneto-elastic coupling in VOCl: Neutron and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction study

We present a combined neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of VOCl. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic order in VOCl is accompanied by a monoclinic distortion. The high sensitivity of the magnetic interaction parameters on V-O-V bond angles and V-V distances yields strong magnetoelastic coupling which implies the structural distortion below T$_N$ as well as anomalous structural effects in the paramagnetic phase.

Collective orbital excitations in orbitally ordered YVO3 and HoVO3

We study orbital excitations in the optical absorption spectra of YVO3 and HoVO3. We focus on an orbital absorption band observed at 0.4 eV for polarization E parallel c. This feature is only observed in the intermediate, monoclinic phase. By comparison with the local crystal-field excitations in VOCl and with recent theoretical predictions for the crystal-field levels we show that this absorption band cannot be interpreted in terms of a local crystal-field excitation. We discuss a microscopic model which attributes this absorption band to the exchange of two orbitals on adjacent sites, i.e., to the direct excitation of two orbitons. This model is strongly supported by the observed dependence on polarization and temperature. Moreover, the calculated spectral weight is in good agreement with the experimental result.

Optical study of orbital excitations in transition-metal oxides

The orbital excitations of a series of transition-metal compounds are studied by means of optical spectroscopy. Our aim was to identify signatures of collective orbital excitations by comparison with experimental and theoretical results for predominantly local crystal-field excitations. To this end, we have studied TiOCl, RTiO3 (R=La, Sm, Y), LaMnO3, Y2BaNiO5, CaCu2O3, and K4Cu4OCl10, ranging from early to late transition-metal ions, from t_2g to e_g systems, and including systems in which the exchange coupling is predominantly three-dimensional, one-dimensional or zero-dimensional. With the exception of LaMnO3, we find orbital excitations in all compounds. We discuss the competition between orbital fluctuations (for dominant exchange coupling) and crystal-field splitting (for dominant coupling to the lattice). Comparison of our experimental results with configuration-interaction cluster calculations in general yield good agreement, demonstrating that the coupling to the lattice is important for a quantitative description of the orbital excitations in these compounds. However, detailed theoretical predictions for the contribution of collective orbital modes to the optical conductivity (e.g., the line shape or the polarization dependence) are required to decide on a possible contribution of orbital fluctuations at low energies, in particular in case of the orbital excitations at about 0.25 eV in RTiO3. Further calculations are called for which take into account the exchange interactions between the orbitals and the coupling to the lattice on an equal footing.

Zero-field incommensurate spin-Peierls phase with interchain frustration in TiOCl

We report on the magnetic, thermodynamic and optical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets TiOCl and TiOBr, which have been discussed as spin-Peierls compounds. The observed deviations from canonical spin-Peierls behavior, e.g. the existence of two distinct phase transitions, have been attributed previously to strong orbital fluctuations. This can be ruled out by our optical data of the orbital excitations. We show that the frustration of the interchain interactions in the bilayer structure gives rise to incommensurate order with a subsequent lock-in transition to a commensurate dimerized state. In this way, a single driving force, the spin-Peierls mechanism, induces two separate transitions.
