Fishing for Jellyfish Galaxies: Exploring ram-pressure stripping with crowd science

Aims: We present the first results of Fishing for Jellyfish Galaxies, a pilot citizen-science project using Zooniverse to identify galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping (RPS). Methods: Volunteers visually inspected colour images of late-type galaxies from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, from a sample of 49,703 galaxies selected within $4 \times R_{500}$ of clusters and groups, restricted to galaxies brighter than 19th magnitude in the g and r bands, and with a minimum half-light radius of 2 arcseconds, to aid classification. We detail our data processing, including debiasing classifications and optimising vote-fraction thresholds to maximise completeness and purity, calibrated against a ground-truth set of pre-labelled galaxies. Results: Our final catalogue contains 6739 jellyfish candidates (6621 new), 5430 merger candidates, and 29,729 undisturbed galaxies, with 3910 jellyfish exhibiting prominent tail-like morphologies. We find that the fraction of RPS candidates rises from ~10% in galaxy groups to ~20-30% in massive clusters, confirming the findings of previous studies carried out on smaller samples. For the subset of our RPS candidate sample with spectroscopic data, we measure a median clustercentric velocity 53% higher than the general cluster population, consistent with galaxies in early stages of accretion into the cluster. They are also typically late-type blue galaxies with elevated star-formation rates, in agreement with expectations. These results demonstrate that citizen scientists can reliably identify galaxies that undergo environmental processes. We provide the initial release of 37,599 visually classified galaxies as a resource for future studies of galaxy transformation in clusters.

A note on the motion representation and configuration update in time stepping schemes for the constrained rigid body

The dynamics of a holonomically constrained rigid body can be modeled by Newton-Euler equations subjected to geometric constraints. This is frequently formulated as a differential-algebraic equation (DAE) system of index 1. Inmultibody system (MBS) dynamics it is common (1) to numerically solve this system by means of integration schemes for ordinary differential equations, and (2) to treat the rigid body motion on the direct product Lie group SO (3)R3, although rigid body motions form the semidirect product Lie group SE (3). It is has been observed that the constraint satisfaction depends on which Lie group is used as configuration space (c-space). In this paper the problem is considered from a geometric perspective. It is shown that the constraints are exactly satisfied by a numerical integration scheme if they define a subgroup of the c-space. The subgroups of SE (3) have a significance for modeling mechanical systems, including lower kinematic (Reuleaux) pairs and are implicitly used in MBS modeling. It is concluded that SE (3) is the appropriate cspace for numerical DAE modeling of a constrained rigid body. This result does not immediately apply to MBS, however.

The SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE) V. Full sample characterization

Unbiased surveys of large stellar samples are the prime means through which the prevalence of exoplanets can be derived, and crucial constraints to planet formation models can be set. Direct imaging (DI) is ideally positioned to probe the outer regions (5-300au) of planetary systems, providing complementary information to techniques such as transits and radial velocities. We present the full sample of the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the second largest DI campaign to date. SHINE observed 460 stars between 2015 and 2023 thanks to the guaranteed time observations (GTO) allocated by ESO to the SPHERE consortium at VLT. The goal of this paper is to homogeneously derive the stellar properties of the targets and to define a subsample of young single hosts to be used as a starting point for the final statistical analysis of the survey. Stellar ages were determined based on kinematic indicators (such as the membership to young moving groups), age diagnostics (lithium abundance, rotation, activity), and isochrone fitting. A thorough vetting for binarity was undertaken combining astrometric, spectroscopic, and imaging data. A subsample of 333 stars, covering a large extent of stellar ages and masses, was constructed. Selection criteria, global features, as well as the properties of individual stars are reported and discussed.

Double to tenfold M-shell photoionization of singly charged lanthanum ions

Using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at the PETRA\,III synchrotron light source, we have measured cross sections for double and up to tenfold photoionization of La$^{+}$ ions by a single photon in the energy range 820--1400~eV, where resonances and thresholds occur that are associated with the excitation or ionization of one $M$-shell electron. These cross sections represent experimental benchmark data for the further development of quantum theoretical methods, which will have to provide the bulk of the atomic data required for the modeling of nonequilibrium plasmas such as kilonovae. In the present work, we have upgraded the Jena Atomic Calculator (JAC) and pushed the state-of-the-art of quantum calculations for heavy many-electron systems to new limits. In particular, we have performed large-scale calculations of the La$^+$ photoabsorption cross section and of the deexcitation cascades, which set in after the initial creation of a $3d$ hole. Our theoretical results largely agree with our experimental findings. However, our theoretical product-ion charge state distributions are somewhat narrower than the experimental ones, which is most probably due to the simplifications necessary to keep the cascade calculations tractable.

Testing strong-field QED to second-order in the highly correlated atomic system berylliumlike Pb78+ by electron-ion recombination spectroscopy

A low-energy storage ring with an ultracold electron cooler has been coupled with a heavy-ion accelerator facilitating high-resolution electron-ion collision spectroscopy of the heaviest few-electron ions. In the present work resonant electron-ion recombination of berylliumlike Pb$^{78+}$ ions was measured in the collision-energy range 9.3-16.5eV and a value of 244.937(30) eV is derived for the Pb$^{78+}$($2s^2\;^1S_0 - 2s\,2p\;^3P_1$) excitation energy. This result agrees with the most recent (less accurate) theoretical value of 244.942(52) eV [Malyshev et al., Physical Review A 110, 062824 (2024)], which has been calculated by applying strong-field QED rigorously up to the second order. The present investigation suggests that further technical improvements can potentially increase the experimental accuracy by an order of magnitude.

The SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE). V. Complete observations, data reduction and analysis, detection performances, and final results

During the past decade, state-of-the-art planet-finder instruments like SPHERE@VLT, coupling coronagraphic devices and extreme adaptive optics systems, unveiled, thanks to large surveys, around 20 planetary mass companions at semi-major axis greater than 10 astronomical units. Direct imaging being the only detection technique to be able to probe this outer region of planetary systems, the SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE) was designed and conducted from 2015 to 2021 to study the demographics of such young gas giant planets around 400 young nearby solar-type stars. In this paper, we present the observing strategy, the data quality, and the point sources analysis of the full SHINE statistical sample as well as snapSHINE. Both surveys used the SPHERE@VLT instrument with the IRDIS dual band imager in conjunction with the integral field spectrograph IFS and the angular differential imaging observing technique. All SHINE data (650 datasets), corresponding to 400 stars, including the targets of the F150 survey, are processed in a uniform manner with an advanced post-processing algorithm called PACO ASDI. An emphasis is put on the classification and identification of the most promising candidate companions. Compared to the previous early analysis SHINE F150, the use of advanced post-processing techniques significantly improved by one or 2 magnitudes (x3-x6) the contrast detection limits, which will allow us to put even tighter constraints on the radial distribution of young gas giants. This increased sensitivity directly places SHINE as the largest and deepest direct imaging survey ever conducted. We detected and classified more than 3500 physical sources. One additional substellar companion has been confirmed during the second phase of the survey (HIP 74865 B), and several new promising candidate companions are awaiting second epoch confirmations.

Double-$K$-hole resonances in single photoionization of He-like B$^{3+}$ ions

Within a joint experimental and theoretical research project, single photoionization of He-like B$^{3+}$ ions was investigated in the energy range from approximately 250 to 1200~eV. With the parent-ion beam in the experiment containing both $1s^2~^1S$ ground-state and $1s2s~^3S$ metastable B$^{3+}$ ions, double-core-hole resonances could be studied. Two series of hollow resonant states were observed, one populated by $K$-shell double excitation $1s^2~^1S \to 2\ell n\ell'~^1P$ ($\ell=s,p$; $\ell'=p,s$; $n=2,3,..,6$) at photon energies up to about 510~eV, the other by $K$-shell single excitation $1s2s~^3S \to 2\ell n\ell'~^3P$ ($\ell=s,p$; $\ell'=p,s$; $n=2,3,..,6$) at energies up to about 310~eV. High resolving powers up to approximately 29000 were achieved. The relativistic many-body perturbation theory was employed to determine level-to-level cross sections for $K$-shell excitation with subsequent autoionization. The resonance energies were calculated with inclusion of electron correlation and radiative contributions. The energy uncertainties of the most prominent resonances are estimated to be below $\pm 1$ meV. Convergent close coupling (CCC) calculations provided single-photoionization cross sections $σ_{34}$ for B$^{3+}$ including the resonant and non-resonant channels. Apart from the resonances, $σ_{34}$ is dominated by direct ionization in the investigated energy range. The contribution $σ_{34}^{\mathrm{dir}}$ of the latter process to $σ_{34}$ was separately determined by using the random-phase approximation with exchange and relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations which agree very well with previous calculations. Direct ionization of one electron accompanied by excitation of the remaining electron was treated by the CCC theory and found to be a minor contribution to $σ_{34}$.

Dielectronic recombination data for astrophysical applications: Plasma rate-coefficients for Fe^q+ (q=7-10, 13-22) and Ni^25+ ions from storage-ring experiments

This review summarizes the present status of an ongoing experimental effort to provide reliable rate coefficients for dielectronic recombination of highly charged iron ions for the modeling of astrophysical and other plasmas. The experimental work has been carried out over more than a decade at the heavy-ion storage-ring TSR of the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. The experimental and data reduction procedures are outlined. The role of previously disregarded processes such as fine-structure core excitations and trielectronic recombination is highlighted. Plasma rate coefficients for dielectronic recombination of Fe$^{q+}$ ions (q=7-10, 13-22) and Ni$^{25+}$ are presented graphically and in a simple parameterized form allowing for easy use in plasma modeling codes. It is concluded that storage-ring experiments are presently the only source for reliable low-temperature dielectronic recombination rate-coefficients of complex ions.

The effect of cluster dynamical state on ram-pressure stripping

Theoretical and observational studies have suggested that ram-pressure stripping by the intracluster medium can be enhanced during cluster interactions, boosting the formation of the "jellyfish" galaxies. In this work, we study the incidence of galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping in 52 clusters of different dynamical states. We use optical data from the WINGS/OmegaWINGS surveys and archival X-ray data to characterise the dynamical state of our cluster sample, applying eight different proxies. We then compute the number of ram-pressure stripping candidates relative to the infalling population of blue late-type galaxies within a fixed circular aperture in each cluster. We find no clear correlation between the fractions of ram-pressure stripping candidates and the different cluster dynamical state proxies considered. These fractions also show no apparent correlation with cluster mass. To construct a dynamical state classification closer to a merging "sequence", we perform a visual classification of the dynamical states of the clusters, combining information available in optical, X-ray, and radio wavelengths. We find a mild increase in the RPS fraction in interacting clusters with respect to all other classes (including post-mergers). This mild enhancement could hint at a short-lived enhanced ram-pressure stripping in ongoing cluster mergers. However, our results are not statistically significant due to the low galaxy numbers. We note this is the first homogeneous attempt to quantify the effect of cluster dynamical state on ram-pressure stripping using a large cluster sample, but even larger (especially wider) multi-wavelength surveys are needed to confirm the results.

Vibrationally Resolved Inner-Shell Photoexcitation of the Molecular Anion C$_2^-$

Carbon $1s$ core-hole excitation of the molecular anion C$_2^-$ has been experimentally studied at high resolution by employing the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. The experimental cross section for photo--double-detachment shows a pronounced vibrational structure associated with $1σ_u\to3σ_g$ and $1σ_g \to 1π_u$ core excitations of the C$_2^-$ ground level and first excited level, respectively. A detailed Franck-Condon analysis reveals a strong contraction of the C$_2^-$ molecular anion by 0.2~Å upon this core photoexcitation. The associated change of the molecule's moment of inertia leads to a noticeable rotational broadening of the observed vibrational spectral features. This broadening is accounted for in the present analysis which provides the spectroscopic parameters of the C$_2^-$ $1σ_u^{-1}\,3σ_g^2\;{^2}Σ_u^+$ and $1σ_g^{-1}\,3σ_g^2\;{^2}Σ_g^+$ core-excited levels.

A high resolution study of near-IR diffuse interstellar bands, search for small scale structure, time variability and stellar features

Diffuse interstellar bands comprise hundreds of absorption features in the ISM. Most DIBs are observed in the optical, but some are in the IR. We observed 76 early-type stars at R=50,000 and S/N ratios of several hundreds using CRIRES. We measure DIBs around 1318, 1527, 1561, 1565, 1567, 1574 and/or 1624 nm. We detect a total of 6 DIB features and 17 likely stellar features assisted by a CMFGEN model. We also measured the DIBs at 1318 and 1527 nm using X-shooter towards ten Ceph. variables with 3.2 < E(B-V) < 6.5 and 4 stars at low values of water vapour. Correlation coeffs. of 0.73-0.96 are found comparing NIRDIB eq. width vs. E(B-V) and with r > 0.8 when comparing the NIR and optical DIBs 5705, 5780, 6203, 6283 and 6269 A. The 5797 A DIB is less well correlated with the NIDIBs. The "C60+" DIB at 9632 A is not well correlated with the 1318 nm DIB. Partial correlation coefficients using E(B-V) as the covariate were also determined. For stars earlier than B2, the 1318 nm DIB is affected by an emission line on its blue wing, likely stellar in nature, although we cannot rule out interstellar/circumstellar origin for example caused by by a DIB in emission. The 1318 nm DIB has a red wing and is reasonably well fitted by two gaussians. Neither the component ratios nor separation are correlated with 5780/5797 or E(B-V). EW(1318 nm) correlates with HI with EW(1318 nm)/E(B-V) decreasing with f(H2). Five pairs of stars within 1 am show similar 1318 nm DIB profiles. Variation in 1318 nm is seen in HD 145501/145502 and HD 168607/168625 pairs. CRIRES data for 17 stars separated by 6-14 months and 2 X-shooter sightlines separated by 9.9 yr were analysed. No time-variability is detected in the 5780, 5797 A, 1318 nm or 1527 nm DIBs. Tentative time variation is observed in the C60+ DIBs at 9577 and 9632 A towards HD 183143 although very close to the noise level with confirmation required.

Multiple Photodetachment of Oxygen Anions via K-Shell Excitation and Ionization: Direct Double-Detachment Processes and Subsequent Deexcitation Cascades

Experimental cross sections for m-fold photodetachment (m=2-5) of oxygen anions via K-shell excitation and ionization were measured in the photon-energy range of 525-1500 eV using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. The measured cross sections exhibit clear signatures of direct double detachment, including double K-hole creation. The shapes of the double-detachment cross sections as a function of photon energy are in accord with Pattard's [J. Phys. B 35, L207 (2002)] empirical scaling law. We have also followed the complex deexcitation cascades that evolve subsequently to the initial double-detachment events by systematic large-scale cascade calculations. The resulting theoretical product charge-state distributions are in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Near K-Edge Photoionization and Photoabsorption of Singly, Doubly, and Triply Charged Silicon Ions

Experimental and theoretical results are presented for double, triple, and quadruple photoionization of Si$^+$ and Si$^{2+}$ ions and for double photoionization of Si$^{3+}$ ions by a single photon. The experiments employed the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. The experimental photon-energy range 1835--1900 eV comprises resonances associated with the excitation of a $1s$ electron to higher subshells and subsequent autoionization. Energies, widths, and strengths of these resonances are extracted from high-resolution photoionization measurements, and the core-hole lifetime of K-shell ionized neutral silicon is inferred. In addition, theoretical cross sections for photoabsorption and multiple photoionization were obtained from large-scale Multi-Configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations. The present calculations agree with the experiment much better than previously published theoretical results. The importance of an accurate energy calibration of laboratory data is pointed out. The present benchmark results are particularly useful for discriminating between silicon absorption in the gaseous and in the solid component (dust grains) of the interstellar medium.

GASP XXXVII: The Most Extreme Jellyfish Galaxies Compared to Other Disk Galaxies in Clusters, an HI Study

We present the results of a VLA HI imaging survey aimed at understanding why some galaxies develop long extraplanar H$α$ tails, becoming extreme jellyfish galaxies. The observations are centered on five extreme jellyfish galaxies, optically selected from the WINGS and OmegaWINGS surveys and confirmed to have long H$α$ tails through MUSE observations. Each galaxy is located in a different cluster. In the observations there are in total 88 other spiral galaxies within the field of view (40'x40') and observed bandwidth (6500 km s$^{-1}$). We detect 13 of these 88 spirals, plus one uncatalogued spiral, with HI masses ranging from 1 to 7 $\times$ 10${^9}$ M$_{\odot}$. Many of these detections have extended HI disks, two show direct evidence for ram pressure stripping, while others are possibly affected by tidal forces and/or ram-pressure stripping. We stack the 75 non-detected spiral galaxies and find an average HI mass of 1.9 $\times$ 10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$, which given their average stellar mass, implies they are very HI deficient. Comparing the extreme jellyfish galaxies to the other disk galaxies, we find that they have a larger stellar mass than almost all disk galaxies and than all HI detected galaxies, they are at smaller projected distance from the cluster center and at higher relative velocity to the cluster mean than all HI detections and most non-detections. We conclude that the high stellar mass allows extreme jellyfish galaxies to fall deeply into the cluster before being stripped and the surrounding ICM pressure gives rise to their spectacular star-forming tails.

ISPY -- NaCo Imaging Survey for Planets around Young stars. CenteR: the impact of centering and frame selection

Abridged: Direct imaging has made significant progress over the past decade leading to the detection of several giant planets. Observing strategies and data rates vary from instrument to instrument and wavelength, and can result in tens of thousands of images to be combined. We here present a new approach, tailored for VLT/NaCo observations performed with the Annular Groove Phase Mask (AGPM) coronagraph at $L'$ filter. Our pipeline aims at improving the post-processing of the observations on two fronts: identifying the location of the star behind the AGPM to better align the science frames and performing frame selection. Our method relies on finding the position of the AGPM in the sky frame observations, and correlate it with the circular aperture of the coronagraphic mask. This relationship allows us to retrieve the location of the AGPM in the science frames, in turn allowing us to estimate the position of the star. In the process we also gather additional information useful for our frame selection approach. We tested our pipeline on several targets, and find that we improve the S/N of companions around $β$ Pictoris and R CrA by $24\pm3$ \% and $117\pm11$ \% respectively, compared to other state-of-the-art reductions. The astrometry of the point sources is slightly different but remains compatible within $3σ$ compared to published values. Finally, we find that even for NaCo observations with tens of thousands of frames, frame selection yields just marginal improvement for point sources but may improve the final images for objects with extended emission such as disks. We proposed a novel approach to identify the location of the star behind a coronagraph even when it cannot easily be determined by other methods, leading to better S/N for nearby point sources, and led a thorough study on the importance of frame selection, concluding that the improvements are marginal in most case.

Multiple photodetachment of silicon anions via K-shell excitation and ionization

Experimental cross sections for $m$-fold photodetachment ($m=3-6$) of silicon anions via $K$-shell excitation and ionization were measured in the photon-energy range of 1830-1900 eV using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. All cross sections exhibit a threshold behavior that is masked by pre-threshold resonances associated with the excitation of a $1s$ electron to higher, either partly occupied or unoccupied atomic subshells. Results from multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations agree with the experimentally derived cross sections for photo-absorption if small energy shifts are applied to the calculated resonance positions and detachment thresholds. Moreover, a systematic approach is applied for modeling the deexcitation cascades that set in after the initial creation of a $K$-shell hole. The resulting product charge-state distributions compare well with the measured ones for direct $K$-shell detachment but less well for resonant $K$-shell excitation. The present results are potentially useful for identifying silicon anions in cold plasmas such as interstellar gas clouds.

GRAVITY K-band spectroscopy of HD 206893 B: brown dwarf or exoplanet

We aim to reveal the nature of the reddest known substellar companion HD 206893 B by studying its near-infrared colors and spectral morphology and by investigating its orbital motion. We fit atmospheric models for giant planets and brown dwarfs and perform spectral retrievals with petitRADTRANS and ATMO on the observed GRAVITY, SPHERE, and GPI spectra of HD 206893 B. To recover its unusual spectral features, we include additional extinction by high-altitude dust clouds made of enstatite grains in the atmospheric model fits. We also infer the orbital parameters of HD 206893 B by combining the $\sim 100~μ\text{as}$ precision astrometry from GRAVITY with data from the literature and constrain the mass and position of HD 206893 C based on the Gaia proper motion anomaly of the system. The extremely red color and the very shallow $1.4~μ\text{m}$ water absorption feature of HD 206893 B can be fit well with the adapted atmospheric models and spectral retrievals. Altogether, our analysis suggests an age of $\sim 3$-$300~\text{Myr}$ and a mass of $\sim 5$-$30~\text{M}_\text{Jup}$ for HD 206893 B, which is consistent with previous estimates but extends the parameter space to younger and lower-mass objects. The GRAVITY astrometry points to an eccentric orbit ($e = 0.29^{+0.06}_{-0.11}$) with a mutual inclination of $< 34.4~\text{deg}$ with respect to the debris disk of the system. While HD 206893 B could in principle be a planetary-mass companion, this possibility hinges on the unknown influence of the inner companion on the mass estimate of $10^{+5}_{-4}~\text{M}_\text{Jup}$ from radial velocity and Gaia as well as a relatively small but significant Argus moving group membership probability of $\sim 61\%$. However, we find that if the mass of HD 206893 B is $< 30~\text{M}_\text{Jup}$, then the inner companion HD 206893 C should have a mass between $\sim 8$-$15~\text{M}_\text{Jup}$.

Constraining the Nature of the PDS 70 Protoplanets with VLTI/GRAVITY

We present K-band interferometric observations of the PDS 70 protoplanets along with their host star using VLTI/GRAVITY. We obtained K-band spectra and 100 $μ$as precision astrometry of both PDS 70 b and c in two epochs, as well as spatially resolving the hot inner disk around the star. Rejecting unstable orbits, we found a nonzero eccentricity for PDS 70 b of $0.17 \pm 0.06$, a near-circular orbit for PDS 70 c, and an orbital configuration that is consistent with the planets migrating into a 2:1 mean motion resonance. Enforcing dynamical stability, we obtained a 95% upper limit on the mass of PDS 70 b of 10 $M_\textrm{Jup}$, while the mass of PDS 70 c was unconstrained. The GRAVITY K-band spectra rules out pure blackbody models for the photospheres of both planets. Instead, the models with the most support from the data are planetary atmospheres that are dusty, but the nature of the dust is unclear. Any circumplanetary dust around these planets is not well constrained by the planets' 1-5 $μ$m spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and requires longer wavelength data to probe with SED analysis. However with VLTI/GRAVITY, we made the first observations of a circumplanetary environment with sub-au spatial resolution, placing an upper limit of 0.3~au on the size of a bright disk around PDS 70 b.
