High isothermal magnetocaloric effect in La(Fe,Si)13 based alloys

This work investigates the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in LaFe_{11.6}Si_{1.4} and LaFe_{11.78}Mn_{0.41}Si_{1.32}H_{1.6} alloys under adiabatic ΔT and isothermal ΔQ conditions in a magnetic field of μ_{0}H = 1.8 T. The studied samples exhibited high reproducibility of the ΔQ-effect upon cyclic magnetic field application, which is of critical importance for magnetic cooling systems. The LaFe_{11.78}Mn_{0.41}Si_{1.32}H_{1.6} alloy demonstrate high values of the isothermal MCE, with a maximum ΔQ = 3400 J/kg in a magnetic field of μ0H = 1.8 T near the Curie temperature (TC) of 275 K. This value is 2.5 times higher than the well-known corresponding values for pure Gd at room temperature. Furthermore, the structural and magnetic properties of LaFe13-xSix-based alloys with Cr and Co additions were investigated using density functional theory calcula-tions. It was shown that the addition of Cr leads to a decrease in the equilibrium volume, i.e., to a com-pression of the crystal lattice, whereas Co addition causes its expansion. These changes are expected to increase or decrease the T_{C}, respectively.

Determination of the magnetocaloric effect from thermophysical parameters and their relationships near magnetic phase transition in doped manganites

We present the results of a comparative analysis of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in Pr0.7Sr0.2Ca0.1MnO3, through direct and indirect measurements, using experimentally measured magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction, resistivity, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity parameters. We have demonstrated that the change in each parameter in response to a magnetic field near the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition temperature of the material correlates with the change in magnetic entropy. These findings allow us to interrelate these parameters and provide an alternative, effective approach for accessing the usefulness of magnetocaloric materials.

Anisotropic Magnetocaloric Properties of The Ludwigite Single Crystal Cu2MnBO5

We present the results of a thorough study of the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of a ludwigite crystal Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60 - 350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (92 K), capacity possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of capacity is observed in the temperature range of 95 - 160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The magnetocaloric effect (i.e. the adiabatic temperature change) was assessed through a direct measurement or an indirect method using the capacity data. Owing to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, an anisotropic MCE or the rotating MCE is observed in Cu2MnBO5. A deep minimum in the rotating MCE near the TC is observed and may be associated with the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility.

Magnetocaloric effect in some magnetic materials in alternating magnetic fields up to 22 Hz

Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in different materials (Gd, Fe48Rh52, Ni43Mn37.9In12.1Co7 and Ni2.07Co0.09Mn0.84Ga) in alternating magnetic fields with frequencies f < 22 Hz and an amplitude deltaH = 6.2 kOe are carried out. The MCE in Gd shows inconsiderable changes with field frequency. Near paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in Ni43Mn37.9In12.1Co7 Heusler alloy a slight reduction of MCE with frequency is observed. In weak alternating fields in materials with AFM-FM magneto-structural phase transitions (Fe48Rh52, Ni43Mn37.9In12.1Co7) it is not possible to get a structural contribution to overall MCE because of irreversibility of the transitions in these fields. Near magneto-structural phase transitions the MCE in these alloys has only magnetic contribution, and does not show a significant dependence on the magnetic field frequency. In Ni2.07Co0.09Mn0.84Ga Heusler alloy the MCE vanishes at frequencies about 20 Hz. The obtained results show the increase of frequencies of operating cycles is one of the powerful methods to improve the efficiency of magnetic refrigerators in case of Gd as a refrigerant.

Direct magnetocaloric effect measurement technique in alternating magnetic fields

A method for direct measurement of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in alternating magnetic fields is offered. Main advantages of the method compared to a classical direct one are the high temperature sensitivity (better than 10-3 K); the ability of measuring of MCE in weak magnetic fields (by several tens oersteds and higher); the ability of measuring of MCE on small-sized samples (1x1x 0.01 mm3 and larger); the ability of measuring of MCE in alternating magnetic fields up to 50 Hz of frequency. The results on measurement of MCE on Gd and Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy are reported.

Structure and magnetocaloric properties of La1-xKxMnO3 manganites

A technology of obtaining the single-phase ceramic samples of La1-xKxMnO3 manganites and the dependence of their structural parameters on the content of potassium has been described. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the obtained samples has been measured by two independent methods: by classical direct methodic and by a method of magnetic field modulation. The values of MCE obtained by both methods have been substantially differed. The explanation of the observed divergences is given. The correlation between the level of doping and MCE value has been defined. The value of TC determined by the MCE maximum has been conformed to the literature data received by other methods.

Low field magnetocaloric effect and heat capacity of A-site ordered NdBaMn2O6 manganite

The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the A-site ordered manganite NdBaMn2O6 is studied. The MCE in this compound has an anomalous behavior. In low magnetic fields, the abrupt transitions between direct and inverse magnetocaloric effect are observed. In a relatively strong magnetic field H=11 kOe the direct and inverse effects are observed only at cooling, while the heating mode reveals only an inverse MCE. The value of the MCE (-ΔS=0.7 J/kg K and ΔS= 1.02 J/kg K for ΔH=11 kOe) does not reach high values, but the proximity of the effects occurring at room temperatures expects the use of both effects in the magnetic cooling technology.

Specific heat and magnetocaloric effect in Pr1-xAgxMnO3 manganites

The magnetocaloric effect in alternating magnetic fields has been investigated in Pr1-xAgxMnO3 manganites with x=0.05-0.25. The stepwise reversal of the sign of the magnetocaloric effect has been revealed in a weakly doped sample (x=0.05) at low temperatures (~80 K). This reversal is attributed to the coexistence of the ferromagnetic and canted antiferromagnetic phases with different critical temperatures.

Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect in ribbon samples of Heusler alloys Ni - Mn - M (M = In, Sn)

Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect in samples of rapidly quenched ribbons of Mn50Ni40In10 and Ni50Mn37Sn13 Heusler alloys, with potential applications in magnetic refrigeration technology, are carried out. The measurements were made by a precise method based on the measurement of the oscillation amplitude of the temperature in the sample while is subjected to a modulated magnetic field. In the studied compositions both direct and inverse magnetocaloric effects associated with magnetic (paramagnet - ferromagnet - antiferromagnet) and structural (austenite - martensite) phase transitions are found. Additional inverse magnetocaloric effects of small value are observed around the ferromagnetic transitions.

Direct and Inverse Magnetocaloric effects in A-site ordered PrBaMn2O6 manganite in low magnetic fields

The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of A-site ordered PrBaMn2O6 manganite has been studied by direct methods and by the specific heat measurements. Direct measurements of the MCE in low magnetic fields were performed using recently proposed modulation technique and by classic direct method in high fields. Direct and inverse MCE are observed at Curie and Neel points correspondingly. A value of the inverse MCE in the heating run is less than in the cooling regime. This effect can be attributing to competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Indirectly estimated and direct MCE values considerably differ in around first order AF transition.

Investigation of solutions of boundary value problems for a composite type equation with non-local boundary conditions

Since the order of elliptic type model equation (Laplace equation) is two [1], [2], then it is natural the order of composite type model equation must be [3] [4] [5] three. At each point of the domain under consideration these equations have both real and complex characteristics. Notice that a boundary value problem for a composite type equation of second order first appeared in the paper [6]. The method for investigating the Fredholm property of boundary value problems is distinctive and belongs to one of the authors of the present paper.
