Observation of a Griffiths phase in paramagnetic La1-xSrxMnO3

We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase.

Spin-controlled Mott-Hubbard bands in LaMnO_3 probed by optical ellipsometry

Spectral ellipsometry has been used to determine the dielectric function of an untwinned crystal of LaMnO_3 in the spectral range 0.5-5.6 eV at temperatures 50 K < T < 300 K. A pronounced redistribution of spectral weight is found at the Neel temperature T_N = 140 K. The anisotropy of the spectral weight transfer matches the magnetic ordering pattern. A superexchange model quantitatively describes spectral weight transfer induced by spin correlations. This analysis implies that the lowest-energy transitions around 2 eV are intersite d-d transitions, and that LaMnO_3 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator.

Complex interplay of 3d and 4f magnetism in La:GdMnO3

We report on structural, magnetic, electrical, and thermodynamic properties of Gd-doped LaMnO3 single crystals for Gd doping levels 0 <= x <= 1. At room temperature, for all doping levels the orthorhombic O' phase is indicative for a strong Jahn-Teller distortion. All compositions are insulating. The magnetism of La$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$MnO$_3$ is dominated by the relatively strong Mn-Mn exchange. The weakening of the antiferromagnetic interactions due to the significant decrease f the Mn-O-Mn bond angles leads to the continuous suppression of the magnetic phase-transition temperatures into the antiferromagnetic low-temperature phase for increasing Gd doping. The magnetization can only be explained assuming canting of the manganese spins. The magnetic moments of Gd are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled within the sublattice and are antiferromagnetically coupled to the Mn moments. For intermediate concentrations compensation points are found, below which the spontaneous magnetization becomes negative. In pure GdMnO3 the Mn spins undergo a transition into a complex, probably incommensurate magnetic structure at 41.5 K, followed by a further ordering transition at 16-20 K revealing weak ferromagnetism due to canting and finally by the onset of magnetic order in the Gd sublattice at 6.5 K. At the lowest temperatures and low external fields both magnetic sublattices reveal a canted structure with antiparallel ferromagnetic components.

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of RMnO$_3$ (R = Pr, Nd)

The ground state properties of the pure perovskite compounds PrMnO$_3$ and NdMnO$_3$ were investigated by magnetization, magnetic AC susceptibility and specific heat measurements. A strongly anisotropic behavior has been detected for temperatures below the antiferromagnetic phase transition $T_N$~100K. The susceptibility and the weak spontaneous ferromagnetic moment appear to be different in both compounds due to different anisotropic rare earth contributions. The specific heat shows strong Schottky type contributions at low temperatures, which for NdMnO$_3$ strongly depend on the magnetic field. A spin reorientation phase transition (spin-flop type) induced by a magnetic field along b axis was observed in NdMnO$_3$ at H~110kOe and T=5K. All results can consistently be explained by anisotropic contributions of the rare earth ions: In PrMnO$_3$ the electronic ground state is determined by a low lying quasidoublet split by the crystal field ~19 K. In NdMnO$_3$ the Kramers doublet is split by an exchange Nd-Mn field (~20K).

The Orbital Order Parameter in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 probed by Electron Spin Resonance

The temperature dependence of the electron-spin resonance linewidth in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 has been determined and analyzed in the paramagnetic regime across the orbital ordering transition. From the temperature dependence and the anisotropy of linewidth and $g$-value the orbital order can be unambiguously determined via the mixing angle of the wave functions of the $e_{\rm g}$-doublet. The linewidth shows a similar evolution with temperature as resonant x-ray scattering results.

Structural, magnetic and electrical properties of single crystalline La_(1-x)Sr_xMnO_3 for 0.4 < x < 0.85

We report on structural, magnetic and electrical properties of Sr-doped LaMnO_3 single crystals for doping levels 0.4 < x < 0.85. The complex structural and magnetic phase diagram can only be explained assuming significant contributions from the orbital degrees of freedom. Close to x = 0.6 a ferromagnetic metal is followed by an antiferromagnetic metallic phase below 200 K. This antiferromagnetic metallic phase exists in a monoclinic crystallographic structure. Following theoretical predictions this metallic antiferromagnet is expected to reveal an (x^2-y^2)-type orbital order. For higher Sr concentrations an antiferromagnetic insulator is established below room temperature.

Spin dynamics in La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} (x \le 0.175) investigated by high-field ESR spectroscopy

High-field electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments have been carried out in single crystals of La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_3 in the concentration range 0 \le x \le 0.175. Different quasioptical arrangements have been utilized in the frequency range 40 < ν< 700GHz and for magnetic fields B \le 12T. A splitting of the antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) mode is observed in the magnetic field for the parent compound LaMnO_3 in agreement with the antiferromagnetic structure of this material. Abrupt changes in the AFMR frequencies have been observed around x = 0.025 and attributed to the possible transition between antiferromagnetic and canted state. For increasing Sr-doping the observed AFMR modes are splitted even in zero field, which can be naturally explained using a concept of a canted magnetic structure for x<0.1. In La_{0.825}Sr_{0.175}MnO_3 the ESR spectra are consistent with the ferromagnetic and metallic state. The lines of ferromagnetic resonance and ferromagnetic antiresonance can be clearly seen in the spectra. For intermediate concentrations 0.1 \le x \le 0.15 a complicated set of ESR spectra has been observed, which can be well explained by a single ferromagnetic resonance mode and taking into account electrodynamic effects.

Crystal Field and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Interaction in orbitally ordered La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: An ESR Study

We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3 within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2> and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration.

High-field AFMR in single-crystalline La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: Experimental evidence for the existence of a canted magnetic structure

High-field antiferromagnetic-resonance (AFMR) spectra were obtained in the frequency range 60 GHz < ν< 700 GHz and for magnetic fields up to 8 T in twin-free single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3. At low temperatures two antiferromagnetic modes were detected, which reveal different excitation conditions and magnetic field dependencies. No splitting of these modes was observed for any orientation of the static magnetic field excluding the phase-separation scenario for this composition. Instead, the full data set including the anisotropic magnetization can be well described using a two-sublattice model of a canted antiferromagnetic structure.

ESR study in lightly doped La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3)

This is the first systematic ESR investigation of La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3) single crystals for Sr concentrations x < 0.2. The rich phase diagram of this compound, which is dominated by the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn^(3+), is a matter of actual interest in connection with giant magnetoresistance phenomena. The ESR signal, which is due to both Mn^(3+) and Mn^(4+), directely probes the suppression of the Jahn-Teller distortion with increasing Sr concentration and reveals all characteristic structural and magnetic phase transitions.

Structural phase transitions and sound velocity anomalies in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3

The sound velocities dependencies on temperature V(T) were measured by means of resonance method have on the thin plates of quasimonocrystalline manganites La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3. Results are presented for x=0.1, 0.125, 0.15, 0.175 and 0.2 in the temperature range from 70 to 350K. The V(T) behavior correlates with those of susceptibilities and magnetic moment M(T). For x=0.175 and 0.2 the transition to ferromagnetic state is accompanied by appearance of large but smooth rise in V(T) whereas structural phase transition between the rhomboedral (R) and orthorhombic (O) structures is accompanied by sharp increase up to 15-20% in V(T). For x=0.1, 0.125 and 0.15 the structural phase transition between Jahn-Teller distorted orthorhombic structure (O') and pseudocubic one (O'') is accompanied by deep minimum (~20-30%) in V(T).

Positive magnetoresistance and orbital ordering in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3)

We report on detailed transprort measurements of single crystalline La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (x<=0.2). We have found a giantpositive magnetoresistance in the compositions range between 0.1<=x<=0.125 and give an explaination in terms of orbital ordering due to the interplay between superexchange interactions and Jahn-Teller distortions.

The phase diagramm of La{1-x}Sr{x}MnO3 revisited

We report on detailed sucseptibility and magnetization studies in La{1-x}Sr{x}MnO3 for x<=0.2. We arrive at a phase diagram which shows a ferromagnetic ground state for 0.1<=x<=0.15 followed by a canted antiferromagnetic phase at higher temperatures, not in agreement with present canonical conjectures. The phase diagram indicates the importance of structural aspects and superexchange interactions for the magnetic phases at low Sr concentrations.
