Analytical calculation of the spectrum of nonlinear Compton scattering beyond local approximations

We derive compact analytical formulae for the spectrum of nonlinear Compton scattering in a finite plane-wave pulse with a smooth temporal envelope. The strong-field QED probability is reduced to finite-pulse phase integrals, which are evaluated asymptotically for multicycle pulses with a broad class of smooth envelopes. We use the uniform approximation to remove the caustic divergences that appear at the nonlinear edges of broadened harmonics. Away from the caustics, it reduces to the standard saddle-point result. The behavior near the linear edge is further improved by an envelope-corrected saddle-point approximation. The approach retains the harmonic substructure in the spectral-angular region carrying the dominant part of the emitted radiation. The locally monochromatic approximation is recovered by averaging the finite-pulse interference. Within their asymptotic domain of applicability, the resulting formulae agree with direct numerical calculations and can be used to evaluate spectra from an electron beam.

Alignment and Timing Jitter in Flying-Focus Inverse Compton Scattering

Flying-focus laser pulses can extend the effective interaction length in inverse Compton sources by controlling the trajectory of the focal intensity. Their practical advantage, however, depends on tolerance to shot-to-shot electron--laser alignment and synchronization errors. We develop a semi-analytical model for the shot-averaged total photon yield in head-on inverse Compton scattering of an axisymmetric Gaussian electron bunch with a flying-focus laser pulse. The model includes finite electron-beam emittance, laser diffraction, transverse laser-centroid jitter, longitudinal focus-position jitter, and laser arrival-time jitter at the nominal interaction point. The ensemble averaging over these independent Gaussian errors and the integration over the longitudinal electron and laser coordinates are performed analytically, reducing the overlap problem to a single positive numerical quadrature. This formulation enables rapid evaluation of jitter-robust operating points and provides a compact tool for defining alignment and synchronization tolerances in flying-focus inverse Compton sources.

Cutting rules in strong field QED with application to trident pair production

Following Veltman's approach, we formulate and discuss a general cutting equation for QED in a plane-wave background. We apply the corresponding cutting rules to justify the connection between the two-loop radiative corrections to elastic electron scattering and the rate of the trident process in a constant crossed field. Among other terms generated by cuttings, some field-induced radiation corrections also emerge, which contain UV-finite contributions from loop insertions into external legs. As a byproduct, we compare the previously published results for the trident process in a constant crossed field and present a complete analytical expression for direct and exchange contributions to its rate, which is resolved in the spin of the initial electron. Our findings establish that although total rates can be reliably extracted from higher-loop by applying the cutting rules, reconstruction of differential rates requires additional care. The cutting rules apply to any loop order and may be extended to nonperturbative regimes.

Coherently enhanced radiation friction in laser-plasma collisions

We reconsider the footprints of radiation friction in a head-on collision of a bunch of relativistic charged particles with a laser pulse by demonstrating that forward and backward radiation and radiation friction are coherently enhanced in a dense bunch. This opens an avenue to observe radiation friction in laser-matter interactions at much lower energies and laser intensities than accepted ever previously. An estimate for the energy losses of the particles in the bunch over the collision due to coherent radiation friction in terms of laser and bunch parameters is derived and validated by comparing with the results of three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Analytical theory of coherent radiation and radiation friction in laser-plasma collisions

We develop an analytical theory of coherent (scaled quadratically with the number of particles) radiation and coherent radiation friction in a head-on collision of a dense charged particle bunch with an intense laser pulse. We demonstrate that the low-frequency coherent radiation in the forward and backward directions dominates the energy-momentum losses of a mildly relativistic bunch and can result in a substantial enhancement of the overall radiation friction as compared to the incoherent case. We derive the scaling laws for the average momentum losses of the bunch over the collision with respect to laser intensity, pulse duration, and particle bunch parameters, and show their robustness with respect to laser polarization and the shape of the particle distribution in the bunch.

Final multiplicity of a QED cascade in generalized Heitler model

We consider a generalized Heitler model for QED cascade. An exact formula for the final number of leptons is obtained by solving the kinetic equations. We demonstrate that in such a model the final number of leptons does not depend on photon and lepton free paths. We derive approximate formulas for the main characteristics of cascades at high energy, including the final number of leptons and the cascade depth. We show that in general the final number of leptons is asymptotically proportional to the energy of seed particle. It is also demonstrated how the original Heitler model is reproduced as a special case.

An analytical formula for signal optimization in stimulated photon-photon scattering setup with three laser pulses

We consider a setup to detect stimulated photon-photon scattering using high-power lasers. Signal photons are emitted from an overlap of the incoming intense laser pulses focused in vacuum from three sides. We derive and justify a general approximate analytical formula for the angular distribution and total yield of such signal photons in terms of the parameters of the incoming pulses, including their intensity, carrier frequencies, durations, focusing, polarizations, mutual orientation and overlap. Using the obtained formula a parametric study of the signal is carried out and optimization is performed.

Short-term evolution of electron wave packet in a constant crossed field with radiative corrections

We study the dynamics of an electron wave packet in a strong constant crossed electromagnetic field with account for radiative corrections due to interaction of the electron with the vacuum fluctuations. We evaluate a wave packet composed of the solutions to the Dyson-Schwinger equation, which describes electron propagation without emission of real photons. Spacetime dependence of the wave packet is obtained analytically for a short time interval, the more restricted from above the wider is the packet in momentum space. The radiative corrections alter the electron wavefunction, resulting in particular in a damping of the wave packet. The expectation value of the Dirac spin operator also gets modified.

Nonlinear Compton scattering in time-dependent electric fields: LCFA and beyond

Locally constant crossed field approximation (LCFA) is a powerful tool for theoretical and numerical studies of various strong field quantum electrodynamical effects. We explore this approximation in detail for photon emission by a spinless particle in a strong time-dependent electric field. This kind of electromagnetic fields is of particular interest, because, in contrast to the comprehensively studied case of a plane wave, they are not crossed. We develop an approach for calculating photon emission probability in a generic time-dependent electric field, establish the range of applicability of LCFA, and calculate the corrections to it.

Structure of radiative corrections in a strong constant crossed field in the bubble-chain approximation

We present a calculation of the electron mass operator combining the bubble-chain photon and the leading order electron propagators in a strong constant crossed electromagnetic field. The photon propagator is obtained by a summation of the Dyson series over 1PI polarization loop insertions and is accounted for in general form. By applying the derived mass operator, we find the bubble-chain electron propagator and the elastic scattering amplitude. The results are expressed in the general form of expansion over $γ$-matrix structures, each multiplied by a scalar invariant function of the electron virtuality and the quantum dynamical parameter $χ$. We perform their asymptotic analysis and identify the dominant contribution at $χ\gg 1$. The presented calculations can be generalized by replacing the leading order electron propagator with the bubble-chain one. This will allow a consistent study the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the fully nonperturbative regime $αχ^{2/3}\gtrsim1$ within the bubble-chain approximation. In addition, we accompany our paper with the open-access computer-algebraic scripts containing all the presented computations [https://github.com/ArsenyMironov/SFQED-Loops].

Onset of electron-seeded cascades in generic electromagnetic fields

QED cascades in a strong electromagnetic field of optical range and arbitrary configuration are considered. A general expression for short-time dependence of the key electron quantum dynamical parameter is derived, allowing to generalize the effective threshold condition of QED cascade onset. The generalized theory is applied to selfsustained cascades in a single focused laser pulse. According to numerical simulations, if a GeV electron bunch is used as a seed, an ordinary cascade can be converted into the selfsustained one. As an application, it would be also possible to produce this way bright collimated photon beams with up to GeV photon energies.

Resummation of QED radiative corrections in a strong constant crossed field

By considering radiative corrections of up to 3rd-loop order, Ritus and Narozhny conjectured that the proper expansion parameter for QED in a strong constant crossed field is $g=αχ^{2/3}$, where the dynamical quantum parameter $χ=e\sqrt{-(Fp)^2}/m^3$ combines the particle momentum $p$ with the external field strength tensor $F$. Here we present and discuss the first non-perturbative result in this context, the resummed bubble-type polarization corrections to the electron self-energy in a constant crossed field. Our analysis confirms the relevance of the scaling parameter $g$ to the enhancement of bubble-type radiative corrections. This parameter actually represents the characteristic value of the ratio of the 1-loop polarization bubble to the photon virtuality. After an all-order resummation we identify and discuss two contributions to the self-energy with different formation regions and asymptotic behavior for $g\gg1$. Whereas the breakdown of perturbation theory occurs already for $g\gtrsim1$, the leading-order result remains dominant until the asymptotic regime $g\gg 1$ is reached. However, the latter is specific to processes like elastic scattering or photon emission and does not have to remain true for general higher-order QED processes.

Self-consistent kinetic equations for $e^-e^+γ$-plasma generated from vacuum by strong electric field

We present a self-consistent kinetic description of an electron-positron-photon ($e^-e^+γ$) plasma generated from vacuum in a focal spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. We rely on a model of purely time-dependent external electric field, but properly take into account quantum radiation from plasma, as well as the semiclassical internal (plasma) field. To achieve this goal we derive a system of coupled kinetic equations for the electron, positron, and photon plasma species supplemented with Maxwell equation for the internal electric field. Quantum radiation is included systematically by taking into account the pair creation/annihilation and radiation channels of the BBGKY chain in quasiparticle representation, which we truncate at second order of perturbation theory. An important application of our results would be consistent consideration of photon emission and cascade production beyond the locally constant field approximation, including the depletion of the driving laser field and a possible scenario of cascade saturation due to thermalization.

The effect of interference on the trident process in a constant crossed field

We perform a complete calculation of electron-seeded pair-creation (the trident process) in a constant crossed electromagnetic background. Unlike earlier treatments, we include the interference between exchange diagrams. We find this exchange interference can be written as a contribution solely to the one-step process, and for small quantum nonlinearity parameter is of the same order as other one-step terms. We find the exchange interference further suppresses the one-step process in this parameter regime. Our findings further support the crucial assumption made in laser-plasma simulation codes that at high intensities, the trident process can be well-approximated by repeated iteration of the single-vertex subprocesses. The applicability of this assumption to higher-vertex processes has fundamental importance to the development of simulation capabilities.

Unusual face of radiation friction: enhancing production of longitudinal plasma waves

We study the penetration of ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulses into a thick subcritical plasma layer with accounting for radiation friction. We show that radiation pressure is enhanced by radiation friction in the direction transverse to the laser pulse propagation, and that for stronger and longer laser pulses this mechanism dominates over the ordinary ponderomotive pressure, thus resulting in a stronger charge separation than anticipated previously. We give estimates of the effect and compare them with the results of 1D and 2D PIC simulations.
