The Nucleon Axial Form Factor from Elementary Target Data

Precise neutrino-nucleon amplitudes are essential ingredients for predicting neutrino event rates in current and upcoming long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. A common neutrino interaction with a low reaction threshold and with most of the energy carried by two final state particles is quasielastic scattering, for which the nucleon axial form factor, $F_{A}(Q^{2})$, is a dominant source of uncertainty. Improvements to the nucleon axial form factor rely on neutrino scattering data with elementary targets to reduce or eliminate the need for nuclear modeling systematics. This work examines constraints on the nucleon axial form factor that can be achieved from datasets of neutrino scattering on deuterium targets, Lattice QCD predictions, and from the recent hydrogen target data from the MINERvA Collaboration. Significant tension is found between hydrogen and deuterium target data, suggesting that extractions from deuterium underestimate both the central value and uncertainty of the form factor. Parameterizations for and uncertainties of the nucleon axial form factor using the $z$ expansion are provided.

Comparisons of triple-differential cross sections for quasielastic-like $ν_μ$-hydrocarbon interactions using $\langle E_ν\rangle \sim$ 3~GeV versus $\sim$ 6~GeV beams in MINERvA

Neutrino charged-current quasielastic-like scattering, a reaction category extensively used in neutrino oscillation measurements, receives contributions from single nucleon knockout processes, multinucleon processes, and inelastic scattering with subsequent rescattering or absorption in the nucleus to produce only nucleons in the final state. In this article, comparisons are presented of the same measurement in two different wideband neutrino beams: one beam peaks near 3 GeV with few neutrinos above 6 GeV; the other peaks near 6 GeV with few neutrinos above 10 GeV. Comparisons of differential cross sections in muon and proton kinematics for these two exposures probe deviations from free-neutron scattering that arise from the processes involving the nuclear medium, and provide a test of neutrino interaction models used to infer neutrino energies in oscillation experiments. Discrepancies are observed between the data and predictions that point to overestimates of the final state interactions of both protons and charged pions in quasielastic-like events.

Boosted decision tree reweighting of simulated neutrino interactions for $O(1)$ GeV neutrino cross section measurements

This paper illustrates a generic method for multi-dimensional reweighting of $O(1)$ GeV neutrino interaction Monte Carlo samples. The reweighting is based on a Boosted Decision Tree algorithm trained on high-dimensional space in detector final-state observables. This enables one generator's events to be reweighted so that its reconstructed particle content and kinematics distributions, as well as detector efficiency, match those of a target model. The approach establishes an efficient way to reuse legacy Monte Carlo data, avoiding re-generation. As an example, we test its use in a measurement of transverse kinematic imbalance of the $μ^-$ and proton in charged-current quasielastic like $ν_μ$ events from the MINERvA experiment.

Nuclear binding energy and transverse momentum imbalance in neutrino-nucleus reactions

We have measured new observables based on the final state kinematic imbalances in the mesonless production of $ν_μ+A\rightarrowμ^-+p+X$ in the $\text{MINER}ν\text{A}$ tracker. Components of the muon-proton momentum imbalances parallel ($δp_\mathrm{Ty}$) and perpendicular($δp_\mathrm{Tx}$) to the momentum transfer in the transverse plane are found to be sensitive to the nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, binding energy and non-QE contributions. The QE peak location in $δp_\mathrm{Ty}$ is particularly sensitive to the binding energy. Differential cross sections are compared to predictions from different neutrino interaction models. The Fermi gas models presented in this study cannot simultaneously describe features such as QE peak location, width and the non-QE events contributing to the signal process. Correcting the GENIE's binding energy implementation according to theory causes better agreement with data. Hints of proton left-right asymmetry are observed in $δp_\mathrm{Tx}$. Better modeling of the binding energy can reduce bias in neutrino energy reconstruction and these observables can be applied in current and future experiments to better constrain nuclear effects.

Measurement of the A dependence of the muon neutrino charged-current quasielastic-like cross section as a function of muon and proton kinematics at $<$E$_ν>\sim$6 GeV

The first simultaneous measurements of the $ν_μ$ quasielastic-like cross section on C, CH, H$_2$0, Fe, and Pb targets as a function of kinematic imbalance variables in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino direction are presented. These variables combine the muon and proton information to provide a new way to disentangle the effects of the nucleus in quasielastic-like processes. The data were obtained using a wide-band $ν_μ$ beam with $<$E$_ν>\sim$6 GeV. Cross-section ratios of the different target materials to CH are also shown. These measurements are used to explore the nature of the cross-section $A$-scaling, as well as initial and final state interaction effects. Comparisons are made to predictions from a number of commonly used neutrino Monte Carlo event generators. The range of predictions of the different models tends to cover the data but the degree and consistency of the agreement suffers in regions, and on higher $A$ targets, where the final state interactions are expected to be more pronounced.

Bounds on neutrino-DM interactions from TXS 0506+056 neutrino outburst

We constrain the neutrino-dark matter cross-section using the $13 \pm 5$ neutrino event excess observed by IceCube in 2014-2015 from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056. Our analysis takes advantage of the dark matter overdensity spike surrounding the supermassive black hole at the center of the blazar. In our results, we take into account uncertainties related to the different types of neutrino emission models and the features of the dark matter spike, considering cross-sections that scale with energy as $σ\propto (E_ν /E_0)^n$, for values of $n = 1, 0, -1, -2$. In our best-case scenario, we obtain limits competitive with those derived from other active galaxies, tidal disruption events (TDEs), and the IC-170922A event.

Particle detection performance and Geant4 simulation with low-cost CMOS technology

We evaluate the performance of an Omnivision OV5647 CMOS image sensor (5 Mp) for detecting radiation from Sr90 and Cs137 sources. Our experimental setup uses a Raspberry Pi 3 mini-computer for data acquisition, with image processing using Python and OpenCV libraries. We specify the necessary settings to convert a standard camera into a particle detector sensitive to electrons and photons, including a two-step background filtering procedure. In addition, we implement the first detailed Geant4 simulation that describes the layered geometry and material composition of a commercial CMOS sensor along with the radioactive sources. To enhance the simulation, we include an algorithm for charge diffusion and conversion of the energy deposited by electrons and photons into ADC counts. Our measurements are presented in terms of cluster size, the maximum ADC signal per cluster, and the number of clusters as a function of distance. We find a good agreement between the experimental data and simulation for all these observables, and we can reproduce the correlation between cluster size and maximum ADC signal per cluster. Thus, this simulation, cross-checked with data, can be used to test the feasibility of further particle detection ideas without the need to implement an experimental setup. However, the sensor has limited primary energy resolution and is thus unable to distinguish between different radioactive sources. Nevertheless, given the accurate measurement of energy deposition, the sensor, once calibrated, is suitable for dosimetric measurements of source activities.

Measurement of charged-current $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ cross sections on hydrocarbon in a shallow inelastic scattering region

This MINERvA analysis is the first neutrino and antineutrino study of a shallow inelastic scattering region, which is the transition region between resonant production and deep inelastic scattering processes. This transition is explicitly included in this study by expanding the scope of shallow inelastic scattering to include not only the mainly lower-$Q^2$ nonresonant pion production but also the kinematic region where pion production off quarks within the nucleon becomes significant with $Q^2$ below the onset of the deep-inelastic scattering region defined in this analysis. To reduce the resonance background the kinematic region 1.5 $<$ $W$ $<$ 2 GeV/$c^2$ was chosen. In addition to the inclusive differential cross section measurements, to emphasize SIS interactions off quarks within the nucleon a sample with $Q^2$ $\geq$ 1 GeV/$c^2$ was also analyzed. The measurements of one-dimensional cross sections at $\left\langle E_ν\right\rangle \sim 6$ GeV on hydrocarbon of $Q^2$, Bjorken x and muon momentum variables are compared with modified predictions from the GENIE 2 neutrino generator as well as predictions of other neutrino simulators GiBUU, NEUT, NuWro and an alternative GENIE 3 version. Significant discrepancies both in shape and magnitude between measurements and neutrino simulator predictions of all variables have been observed.

Distinguishing Beyond-Standard Model Effects in Neutrino Oscillation

We systematically assess the DUNE experiment's ability to distinguish between various beyond-standard neutrino oscillation hypotheses pair combinations. For a pair comparison, we evaluate the statistical separation, where one hypothesis plays the role of the true signal while the other corresponds to the test signal. The beyond-standard neutrino oscillation hypotheses under scrutiny include neutrino decay (invisible and visible), non-standard interactions, quantum decoherence, and the violation of the equivalence principle. When taken as the true model, we found that either quantum decoherence or the violation of the equivalence principle are the easiest to differentiate compared to the rest of the hypotheses. Additionally, from our statistical test, we investigate potential discrepancies between the measured CP-violation phase $δ_{CP}$ relative to its true value, which could occur for a given comparison. In our analysis, we will take the true values of $δ_{CP}$ as $-90^\circ$ and $180^\circ$. Notably, even in cases where the beyond-standard neutrino oscillation hypotheses scenarios are statistically indistinguishable, the measured value can exhibit significant deviations from its true value.

Probing nuclear effects with neutrino-induced charged-current neutral pion production

We study neutrino-induced charged-current (CC) $π^0$ production on carbon nuclei using events with fully imaged final-state proton-$π^0$ systems. Novel use of final-state correlations based on transverse kinematic imbalance enable the first measurements of the struck nucleon's Fermi motion, of the intranuclear momentum transfer (IMT) dynamics, and of the final-state hadronic momentum configuration in neutrino pion production. Event distributions are presented for i) the momenta of neutrino-struck neutrons below the Fermi surface, ii) the direction of missing transverse momentum characterizing the strength of IMT, and iii) proton-pion momentum imbalance with respect to the lepton scattering plane. The observed Fermi motion and IMT strength are compared to the previous MINERvA measurement of neutrino CC quasielastic-like production. The measured shapes and absolute rates of these distributions, as well as the cross-section asymmetries show tensions with predictions from current neutrino generator models.

Indirect search of Heavy Neutral Leptons using the DUNE Near Detector

We evaluate the potential of the DUNE Near Detector (DUNEND) for establishing bounds for heavy neutral leptons (HNL). This is achieved by studying how the presence of HNLs affects the production rates of active neutrinos, therefore, creating a deficit in the neutrino charged current (CC) events at the LArTPC of the DUNEND. The estimated bounds on HNLs are calculated for masses between 1 eV and 500 MeV. We consider 10 years of operation (5 in neutrino and antineutrino mode) and obtain limits of $|U_{\mu4}|^2 < 9 \times 10^{-3} (4 \times10^{-2})$ and $|U_{e4}|^2 < 7\times10^{-3} (3 \times10^{-2})$ for masses below 10 MeV and a 5\%(20\%) overall normalization uncertainty in the neutrino charged current event rates prediction. These limits, within the region of masses below 2(10) MeV, are better than those that can be achieved by DUNE direct searches for the case of a 5\%(20\%) uncertainty. When a conservative 20\% uncertainty is present, our limits can only improve current constraints on $|U_{e4}|^2$ by up to a factor of 3 in a small region around 5 eV and set limits on $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ in a mass region free of constraints (40 eV - 1 MeV).

Quantum Decoherence effects on precision measurements at DUNE and T2HK

We investigate the potential impact of neutrino quantum decoherence on the precision measurements of standard neutrino oscillation parameters in the DUNE and T2HK experiments. We show that the measurement of $δ_\text{CP}$, $\sin^2θ_{13}$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}$ is stronger effected in DUNE than in T2HK. On the other hand, DUNE would have a better sensitivity than T2HK to observe decoherence effects. By performing a combined analysis of DUNE and T2HK we show that a robust measurement of standard parameters would be possible, which is not guaranteed with DUNE data alone.

Measurement of the Multi-Neutron $\barν_μ$ Charged Current Differential Cross Section at Low Available Energy on Hydrocarbon

Neutron production in antineutrino interactions can lead to bias in energy reconstruction in neutrino oscillation experiments, but these interactions have rarely been studied. MINERvA previously studied neutron production at an average antineutrino energy of ~3 GeV in 2016 and found deficiencies in leading models. In this paper, the MINERvA 6 GeV average antineutrino energy data set is shown to have similar disagreements. A measurement of the cross section for an antineutrino to produce two or more neutrons and have low visible energy is presented as an experiment-independent way to explore neutron production modeling. This cross section disagrees with several leading models' predictions. Neutron modeling techniques from nuclear physics are used to quantify neutron detection uncertainties on this result.

Simultaneous measurement of muon neutrino $ν_μ$ charged-current single $π^+$ production in CH, C, H$_2$O, Fe, and Pb targets in MINERvA

Neutrino-induced charged-current single $π^+$ production in the $Δ(1232)$ resonance region is of considerable interest to accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work, high statistics differential cross sections are reported for the semi-exclusive reaction $ν_μA \to μ^- π^+ +$ nucleon(s) on scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead targets recorded by MINERvA using a wide-band $ν_μ$ beam with $\left< E_ν\right> \approx 6$~GeV. Suppression of the cross section at low $Q^2$ and enhancement of low $T_π$ are observed in both light and heavy nuclear targets compared to phenomenological models used in current neutrino interaction generators. The cross-section ratios for iron and lead compared to CH across the kinematic variables probed are 0.8 and 0.5 respectively, a scaling which is also not predicted by current generators.

High-Statistics Measurement of Antineutrino Quasielastic-like scattering at $E_ν\sim$ 6~GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We present measurements of the cross section for anti-neutrino charged-current quasielastic-like scattering on hydrocarbon using the medium energy (ME) NuMI wide-band neutrino beam peaking at $ \sim 6$ GeV. The cross section measurements are presented as a function of the longitudinal momentum ($p_{||}$) and transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) of the final state muon. This work complements our previously reported high statistics measurement in the neutrino channel and extends the previous anti-neutrino measurement made in the low energy (LE) beam at neutrino energy($ $) $\sim$ 3.5 GeV to $p_{T}$ of 2.5 GeV/c. Current theoretical models do not completely describe the data in this previously unexplored high $p_{T}$ region. The single differential cross section as a function of four momentum transfer ($Q^{2}_{QE}$) now extends to 4 GeV$^2$ with high statistics. The cross section as a function of $Q^{2}_{QE}$ shows that the tuned simulations developed by the MINERvA collaboration that agreed well with the low energy beam measurements do not agree as well with the medium energy beam measurements. Newer neutrino interaction models such as the GENIE 3 tunes are better able to simulate the high $Q^{2}_{QE}$.

Simultaneous measurement of muon neutrino quasielastic-like cross sections on CH, C, water, Fe, and Pb as a function of muon kinematics at MINERvA

This paper presents the first simultaneous measurement of the quasielastic-like neutrino-nucleus cross sections on C, water, Fe, Pb and scintillator (hydrocarbon or CH) as a function of longitudinal and transverse muon momentum. The ratio of cross sections per nucleon between Pb and CH is always above unity and has a characteristic shape as a function of transverse muon momentum that evolves slowly as a function of longitudinal muon momentum. The ratio is constant versus longitudinal momentum within uncertainties above a longitudinal momentum of 4.5GeV/c. The cross section ratios to CH for C, water, and Fe remain roughly constant with increasing longitudinal momentum, and the ratios between water or C to CH do not have any significant deviation from unity. Both the overall cross section level and the shape for Pb and Fe as a function of transverse muon momentum are not reproduced by current neutrino event generators. These measurements provide a direct test of nuclear effects in quasielastic-like interactions, which are major contributors to long-baseline neutrino oscillation data samples.

Measurement of inclusive charged-current $ν_μ$ cross sections as a function of muon kinematics at $ \sim6~GeV$ on hydrocarbon

MINERvA presents a new analysis of inclusive charged-current neutrino interactions on a hydrocarbon target. We report single and double-differential cross sections in muon transverse and longitudinal momentum. These measurements are compared to neutrino interaction generator predictions from GENIE, NuWro, GiBUU, and NEUT. In addition, comparisons against models with different treatments of multi-nucleon correlations, nuclear effects, resonant pion production, and deep inelastic scattering are presented. The data recorded corresponds to $10.61\times10^{20}$ protons on target with a peak neutrino energy of approximately 6 GeV. The higher energy and larger statistics of these data extend the kinematic range for model testing beyond previous MINERvA inclusive charged-current measurements. The results are not well modeled by several generator predictions using a variety of input models.

Improved constraint on the MINERvA medium energy neutrino flux using $\barνe^{-} \!\rightarrow \barνe^{-}$ data

Processes with precisely known cross sections, like neutrino electron elastic scattering ($νe^{-} \!\rightarrow νe^{-}$) and inverse muon decay ($ν_μe^{-} \!\rightarrow μ^{-} ν_e$) have been used by MINERvA to constrain the uncertainty on the NuMI neutrino beam flux. This work presents a new measurement of neutrino elastic scattering with electrons using the medium energy \numubar enhanced NuMI beam. A sample of 578 events after background subtraction is used in combination with the previous measurement on the \numu beam and the inverse muon decay measurement to reduce the uncertainty on the \numu flux in the \numu-enhanced beam from 7.6\% to 3.3\% and the \numubar flux in the \numubar-enhanced beam from 7.8\% to 4.7\%.
