DGP brane cosmology and quark-hadron phase transition

In the standard picture of cosmology it is predicted that a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately 10 μseconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. We consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a DGP brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities useful for the study of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. Also, due to the high energy density in the early universe, we consider the quadratic energy density term that appears in the Friedmann equation. In DGP brane models such a term corresponds to the negative branch (ε=-1) of the Friedmann equation when the Hubble radius is much smaller than the crossover length in 4D and 5D regimes. We show that for different values of the cosmological constant on a brane, λ, phase transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma and of the hadronic fluid. We then consider the quark-hadron transition in the smooth crossover regime at high and low temperatures and show that such a transition occurs along with decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma during the process of the phase transition.

M-Branes on k-center Instantons

We present analytic solutions for membrane metric function based on transverse $k$-center instanton geometries. The membrane metric functions depend on more than two transverse coordinates and the solutions provide realizations of fully localized type IIA D2/D6 and NS5/D6 brane intersections. All solutions have partial preserved supersymmetries.

Quark-hadron phase transition in Brans-Dicke brane gravity

A standard picture in cosmology has been emerging over the past decade in which a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately $10^{-6}$ seconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. In this paper, we consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a Brans-Dicke brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities relevant to quantitative description of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. We show that for different values of the Brans-Dicke coupling, $ω$, phase transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma and of the hadronic fluid. We then move on to consider the quark-hadron transition in the smooth crossover regime at high and low temperatures and show that such a transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma during the process of quark-hadron phase transition.

Holographic description of Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS Spacetimes

We show that there exists a holographic 2D CFT description of a Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS spacetime. We first consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in extremal Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS spacetimes and find in the "near region", the wave equation in extremal limit could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. This suggests that there exist dual CFT descriptions of these black holes. In the probe limit, we compute the scattering amplitudes of the scalar off the extremal black holes and find perfect agreement with the CFT prediction. Furthermore we study the holographic description of the generic four dimensional non-extremal Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS black holes. We find that if focusing on the near-horizon region, for the massless scalar scattering in the low-frequency limit, the radial equation could still be rewritten as the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir, suggesting the existence of dual 2D description. We read the temperatures of the dual CFT from the conformal coordinates and obtain the central charges by studying the near-horizon geometry of near-extremal black holes. We recover the macroscopic entropy from the microscopic counting. We also show that for the superradiant scattering, the retarded Green's functions and the corresponding absorption cross sections are in perfect match with CFT prediction.

Cosmological Solutions in Five Dimensional Minimal Supergravity

We construct new non-stationary cosmological solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity that don't have any tri-holomorphic U(1) isometries. Our new solutions, in part, contain some of the previously constructed solutions to the minimal supergravity. The c-function of solutions shows monotonic increasing/decreasing behaviour in time, in agreement with the expected behaviour of c-function in spacetimes with positive cosmological constant.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Kerr-Bolt Spacetimes

We extend the recent proposal of hidden conformal symmetry to the four-dimensional spacetimes with rotational parameter and NUT twist. We consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field in background of Kerr-Bolt spacetimes and show in the "near region", the wave equation can be reproduced by the $SL(2,R)_L \times SL(2,R)_R$ Casimir quadratic operators. Moreover, we compute the microscopic entropy of the dual CFT by Cardy formula and find a perfect match to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of Kerr-Bolt spacetimes. The absorption cross section of a near region scalar field also matches to microscopic absorption cross section of the dual CFT.

Cosmological Solutions on Atiyah-Hitchin Space in Five Dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory

We construct non-stationary exact solutions to five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with positive cosmological constant. The solutions are based on four-dimensional Atiyah-Hitchin space. In asymptotic regions, the solutions approach to Gibbons-Perry-Sorkin monopole solutions. On the other hand, near the four-dimensional bolt of Atiyah-Hitchin space, our solutions show a bolt structure in five dimensions. The c-function for the solutions shows monotonic increase in time, in agreement with the general expected behaviour of c-function in asymptotically dS spacetimes.

Gibbons-Hawking M-branes

We present new M2 and M5-brane solutions in M-theory based on transverse Gibbons-Hawking spaces. These solutions provide realizations of fully localized type IIA D2/D6 and NS5/D6 brane intersections. One novel feature of these solutions is that the metric functions depend on more than two transverse coordinates (unlike all the other previous known solutions). All the solutions have eight preserved supersymmetries and the world-volume theories of the NS5-branes are new non-local, non-gravitational, six dimensional, T-dual little string theories with eight supersymmetries. We discuss the limits in which the dynamics of the D2 and NS5-branes decouple from the bulk for these solutions.

Kerr/CFT Correspondence in the Low Energy Limit of Heterotic String Theory

We investigate the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence in the context of heterotic string theory. The Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the near-horizon states of an extremal four (or higher) dimensional black hole could be identified with a certain chiral conformal field theory under the conjecture that the central charges from the non-gravitational fields vanish. The corresponding Virasoro algebra is generated by a class of diffeomorphisms which preserves the appropriate boundary conditions on the near-horizon geometry. To understand the chiral conformal field theory, we consider the class of extremal Kerr-Sen black hole (that contains three non-gravitational fields) as a class of solutions in the low energy limit (effective field theory) of heterotic string theory. We derive the expression of the conserved charges for the extremal Kerr-Sen solutions that contain dilaton, abelian gauge filed and antisymmetric tensor filed. We confirm and extend the validity of the conjecture (that the central charges from the non-gravitational fields vanish) for theories including antisymmetric tensor fields. We combine the calculated central charges with the expected form of the temperature using the Cardy formula to obtain the entropy of the extremal black hole microscopically; in agreement with the macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the extremal black hole.

Atiyah-Hitchin in Five Dimensional Einstein-Maxwell Theory

We construct exact solutions to five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory based on Atiyah-Hitchin space. The solutions cannot be written explicitly in a closed form, so their properties are investigated numerically. The five-dimensional metric is regular everywhere except on the location of original bolt in four-dimensional Atiyah-Hitchin base space. On each time-fixed slices, the metric, asymptotically approaches an Euclidean Taub-NUT space.

Kerr-Bolt Spacetimes and Kerr/CFT Correspondence

We investigate the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence in the context of rotating spacetimes with a NUT twist. The Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the near-horizon states of an extremal four (or higher) dimensional black hole could be identified with a certain chiral conformal field theory. The corresponding Virasoro algebra is generated with a class of diffeomorphism which preserves an appropriate boundary condition on the near-horizon geometry. We try to understand the analog of singularities in the context of dual chiral CFT. Explicitly, we use Kerr/CFT correspondence to show that if we initially do not remove the singularities from the spacetimes, in the dual chiral CFT we can detect the presence of singularities in the bulk of spacetime.

Supergravity Solutions Without Tri-holomorphic U(1) Isometries

We investigate the construction of five-dimensional supergravity solutions that don't have any tri-holomorphic U(1) isometries. We construct a class of solutions that in various limits of parameters reduces to many of previously constructed five-dimensional supergravity solutions based on both hyper-Kahler base spaces that can be put into a Gibbons-Hawking form and hyper-Kahler base spaces that can't be put into a Gibbons-Hawking form. We find a new solution which is over triaxial Bianchi type IX Einstein-hyperkahler base space with no tri-holomorphic U(1) symmetry. One special case of this solution corresponds to five-dimensional solution based on Eguchi-Hanson type II geometry.

Resolved Conifolds in Supergravity Solutions

We construct generalized 11D supergravity solutions of fully localized intersecting D2/D4 brane systems. These solutions are obtained by embedding six-dimensional resolved Eguchi-Hanson conifolds lifted to M-theory. We reduce these solutions to ten dimensions, obtaining new D-brane systems in type IIA supergravity. We discuss the limits in which the dynamics of the D2 brane decouples from the bulk for these solutions.

The Disjointed Thermodynamics of Rotating Black Holes With a NUT Twist

We study the solutions of the Euclidean-signature Einstein equations (gravitational instantons) whose line-element takes the Kerr-bolt form, characterized by three real parameters: a size, a NUT charge, and a spin rate. The exclusion of singularities eliminates most combinations of these parameters, leaving only separated solution-manifolds between which continuous transitions are impossible (The angular velocity divided by the temperature is forced to be a rational multiple of $2π$). This ``quantization'' prevents the free variations presupposed by an equation like $T dS=dM + ΩdJ$, and thereby renders the first law true, false, meaningless, or tautological, depending on how one approaches it.

Bianchi Type IX M-Branes

We present new M2 and M5 brane solutions in M-theory based on transverse self-dual Bianchi type IX space. All the other recently M2 and M5 branes constructed on transverse self-dual Taub-NUT, Egughi-Hanson and Atiyah-Hitchin spaces are special cases of this solution. The solution provides a smooth transition from Eguchi-Hanson type I based M branes to corresponding branes based on Eguchi-Hanson type II space. All the solutions can be reduced down to ten dimensional fully localized intersecting brane configurations.

Entropy and Mass Bounds of Kerr-de Sitter Spacetimes

We consider Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes and evaluate their mass, angular momentum and entropy according to the boundary counterterm prescription. We provide a physicall interpretation for angular velocity and angular momentum at future/past infinity. We show that the entropy of the four-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes is less than of pure de Sitter spacetime in agreement to the entropic N-bound. Moreover, we show that maximal mass conjecture which states any asymptotically de Sitter spacetime with mass greater than de Sitter has a cosmological singularity is respected by asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes with rotation. We furthermore consider the possibility of strengthening the conjecture to state that any asymptotically dS spacetime will have mass greater than dS if and only if it has a cosmological singularity and find that Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes do not respect this stronger statement. We investigate the behavior of the c-function for the Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes and show that it is no longer isotropic. However an average of the c-function over the angular variables yields a renormalization group flow in agreement with the expansion of spacetime at future infinity.

A Review of the N-bound and the Maximal Mass Conjectures Using NUT-Charged dS Spacetimes

The proposed dS/CFT correspondence remains an intriguing paradigm in the context of string theory. Recently it has motivated two interesting conjectures: the entropic N-bound and the maximal mass conjecture. The former states that there is an upper bound to the entropy in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes, given by the entropy of pure de Sitter space. The latter states that any asymptotically de Sitter spacetime cannot have a mass larger than the pure de Sitter case without inducing a cosmological singularity. Here we review the status of these conjectures and demonstrate their limitation. We first describe a generalization of gravitational thermodynamics to asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes, and show how to compute conserved quantities and gravitational entropy using this formalism. From this we proceed to a discussion of the N-bound and maximal mass conjectures. We then illustrate that these conjectures are not satisfied for certain asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes with NUT charge. We close with a presentation of explicit examples in various spacetime dimensionalities.

One novel feature of these solutions is that they have bolt-like fixed points yet still preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetry. All the solutions can be reduced down to ten dimensional intersecting brane configurations.
