$^6$Li-loaded liquid scintillators produced by direct dissolution of compounds in diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN)

The paper describes preparation of $^6$Li-loaded liquid scintillators by methods involving direct dissolution of $^6$Li salts in the commercial diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN) solvent, without the formation of water-in-oil emulsions. Methods include incorporation of $^6$Li that, unlike previously reported formulations, does not require additions of water or a strong acid such as hydrochloric acid (HCl). Results of the conducted experiments show that dissolution of aromatic and aliphatic $^6$Li salts in DIPN can be easily achieved at 0.1- 0.3% by weight of atomic $^6$Li, using small additions of waterless surfactants, or mild carboxylic acids. An alternative way suggests incorporation of $^6$Li as a part of a surfactant molecule that can be dissolved in DIPN without any solubilizing additions. Proposed methods enable preparation of efficient $^6$Li-loaded liquid scintillators that, at a large scale of 50 cm, exhibit good pulse shape discrimination (PSD) properties combined with up to 107% of light output and up to 115% of the attenuation length measured relative to standard undoped EJ-309 liquid scintillator.

Performance of large-scale 6Li-doped pulse-shape discriminating plastic scintillators

A $^6$Li-doped plastic scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination capabilities, commercially identified as EJ-299-50, has been developed and produced at the kilogram-scale. A total of 44 kg-scale bars of dimensions 5.5 cm $\times$ 5.5 cm $\times$ 50 cm of this material have been characterized. Optical properties like light output and effective attenuation length have been found to be comparable to $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillators. The scintillator EJ-299-50 shows good neutron detection capabilities with an effective efficiency for capture on $^6$Li of approximately 85%. Stability tests performed on two formulation variations showed no intrinsic degradation in the material or optical properties during several months of observations.

Recent HBT results in Au+Au and p+p collisions from PHENIX

We present Hanbury-Brown Twiss measurements from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC for final results for charged kaon pairs from sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions and preliminary results for charged pion pairs from sqrt{s} = 200 GeV p+p collisions. We find that for kaon pairs from Au+Au, each traditional 3D Gaussian radius shows approximately the same linear increase as a function of N^{1/3}_{part}. An imaging analysis reveals a significant non-Gaussian tail for r \gtrsim 10 fm. The presence of a tail for kaon pairs demonstrates that similar non-Gaussian tails observed in earlier pion measurements cannot be fully explained by decays of long-lived resonances. The preliminary analysis of pions from sqrt{s} = 200 GeV p+p minimum biased collisions show correlations which are well suited to traditional 3D HBT radii extraction via the Bowler-Sinyukov method, and we present R_out, R_side, and R_long as a function of mean transverse pair mass.

Effects of Multiple Scattering in Cold Nuclear Matter on J/psi Suppression and in Heavy Ion Collisions

Coherent multiple scatterings of c and cbar quark pairs in the environment of heavy ion collisions have been used in a previous work by Qiu et al. [Qiu:1998rz] to study J/psi suppression. That model suggests that heavy quark re-scatterings in a cold nuclear medium can completely explain the centrality dependence of the observed J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS [Abreu:2001kd]. Their calculations also revealed significant differences under the assumptions of a color singlet or color octet production mechanism. A more recent analytic calculation [Fujii:2003fq], which includes incoherent final-state re-scatterings with explicit momentum transfer fluctuations in three dimensions, indicates much less suppression and little sensitivity to the production mechanism. In this article, we study simultaneously both the J/psi suppression and p_T modifications, at SPS and RHIC energies. We mainly focus on incoherent momentum transfer fluctuations in two dimensions, which is more appropriate for the heavy-ion collision kinematics. Our analytic and Monte-Carlo calculations reinforce the analytic results in [Fujii:2003fq]. Additionally, we find that the experimental J/psi suppression and from nucleus-nucleus collisions at the SPS or RHIC cannot simultaneously be described in this incoherent multiple scattering framework for any value of the fluctuation strength parameter .
