Quasi-rectifiable Lie algebras for partial differential equations

We introduce families of quasi-rectifiable vector fields and study their geometric and algebraic aspects. Then, we analyse their applications to systems of partial differential equations. Our results explain, in a simpler manner, previous findings about hydrodynamic-type equations. Facts concerning families of quasi-rectifiable vector fields, their relation to Hamiltonian systems, and practical procedures for studying such families are developed. We introduce and analyse quasi-rectifiable Lie algebras, which are motivated by geometric and practical reasons. We classify different types of quasi-rectifiable Lie algebras, e.g. indecomposable ones up to dimension five. New methods for solving systems of hydrodynamic-type equations are established to illustrate our results. In particular, we study hydrodynamic-type systems admitting $k$-wave solutions through quasi-rectifiable Lie algebras of vector fields. We develop techniques for obtaining the submanifolds related to quasi-rectifiable Lie algebras of vector fields and systems of partial differential equations admitting a nonlinear superposition rule: the PDE Lie systems.

Multiple Riemann wave solutions of the general form of quasilinear hyperbolic systems

The objective of this paper is to construct geometrically Riemann $k$-wave solutions of the general form of first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. To this end, we adapt and combine elements of two approaches to the construction of Riemann $k$-waves, namely the symmetry reduction method and the generalized method of characteristics. We formulate a geometrical setting for the general form of the $k$-wave problem and discuss in detail the conditions for the existence of $k$-wave solutions. An auxiliary result concerning the Frobenius theorem is established. We use it to obtain formulae describing the $k$-wave solutions in closed form. Our theoretical considerations are illustrated by examples of hydrodynamic type systems including the Brownian motion equation.

Invariant solutions of the supersymmetric version of a two-phase fluid flow system

A supersymmetric extension of the two-phase fluid flow system is formulated. A superalgebra of Lie symmetries of the supersymmetric extension of this system is computed. The classification of the one-dimensional subalgebras of this superalgebra into 63 equivalence conjugation classes is performed. For some of the subalgebras, it is found that the invariants have a non-standard structure. For six selected subalgebras, the symmetry reduction method is used to find invariants, orbits of the subgroups and reduced systems. Through the solutions of the reduced systems, the most general solutions are expressed in terms of arbitrary functions of one or two fermionic and one bosonic variables.

The $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ spin $s$ representations via $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ sigma models

We establish and analyze a new relationship between the matrices describing an arbitrary component of a spin $s$, where $2s\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, and the matrices of $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ two-dimensional Euclidean sigma models. The spin matrices are constructed from the rank-1 Hermitian projectors of the sigma models or from the antihermitian immersion functions of their soliton surfaces in the $\mathfrak{su}(2s+1)$ algebra. For the spin matrices which can be represented as a linear combination of the generalized Pauli matrices, we find the dynamics equation satisfied by its coefficients. The equation proves to be identical to the stationary equation of a two-dimensional Heisenberg model. We show that the same holds for the matrices congruent to the generalized Pauli ones by any coordinate-independent unitary linear transformation. These properties open the possibility for new interpretations of the spins and also for application of the methods known from the theory of sigma models to the situations described by the Heisenberg model, from statistical mechanics to quantum computing.

$\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ sigma models described through hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials

The main objective of this paper is to establish a new connection between the Hermitian rank-1 projector solutions of the Euclidean $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ sigma model in two dimensions and the particular hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials called Krawtchouk polynomials. We show that any such projector solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ model, defined on the Riemann sphere and having a finite action, can be explicitly parametrised in terms of these polynomials. We apply these results to the analysis of surfaces associated with $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ models defined using the generalised Weierstrass formula for immersion. We show that these surfaces are homeomorphic to spheres in the $\mathfrak{su}(2s+1)$ algebra, and express several other geometrical characteristics in terms of the Krawtchouk polynomials. Finally, a connection between the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ spin-s representation and the $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ model is explored in detail.

On the geometry of the Clairin theory of conditional symmetries for higher-order systems of PDEs with applications

This work presents a geometrical formulation of the Clairin theory of conditional symmetries for higher-order systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We devise methods for obtaining Lie algebras of conditional symmetries from known conditional symmetries, and unnecessary previous assumptions of the theory are removed. As a consequence, new insights into other types of conditional symmetries arise. We then apply the so-called PDE Lie systems to the derivation and analysis of Lie algebras of conditional symmetries. In particular, we develop a method for obtaining solutions of a higher-order system of PDEs via the solutions and geometric properties of a PDE Lie system, whose form gives a Lie algebra of conditional symmetries of the Clairin type. Our methods are illustrated with physically relevant examples such as nonlinear wave equations, the Gauss--Codazzi equations for minimal soliton surfaces, and generalised Liouville equations.

$\mathbb{C}P^N$ sigma models via the $SU(2)$ coherent states approach

In this paper we present results obtained from the unification of $SU(2)$ coherent states with $\mathbb{C}P^N$ sigma models defined on the Riemann sphere having finite actions. The set of coherent states generated by a vector belonging to a carrier space of an irreducible representation of the group gives rise to a map from the sphere into the set of rank-1 Hermitian projectors in that space. The map can be identified with a particular solution of the $\mathbb{C}P^N$ sigma model, where $N+1$ is equal to the dimension of the representation space. In particular a choice of the generating vector as the highest weight vector of the representation gives rise to the map known as a Veronese immersion. Using a description of the matrix elements of these representations in terms of Jacobi polynomials, we obtain an explicit parametrization of the solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^N$ models, which has not been previously found. We relate the analytical properties of the solutions, which are known to belong to separate classes --- holomorphic, anti-holomorphic and various types of mixed ones --- to the weight corresponding to the chosen weight vector. Some examples of the described constructions are elaborated in detail in this paper.

Properties of soliton surfaces associated with integrable $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models

We investigate certain properties of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$-valued two-dimensional soliton surfaces associated with the integrable $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models constructed by the orthogonal rank-one Hermitian projectors, which are defined on the two-dimensional Riemann sphere with finite action functional. Several new properties of the projectors mapping onto one-dimensional subspaces as well as their relations with three mutually different immersion formulas, namely, the generalized Weierstrass, Sym-Tafel and Fokas-Gel'fand have been discussed in detail. Explicit connections among these three surfaces are also established by purely analytical descriptions and, it is demonstrated that the three immersion formulas actually correspond to the single surface parametrized by some specific conditions.

Fluid dynamics solutions obtained from the Riemann invariant approach

The generalized method of characteristics is used to obtain rank-2 solutions of the classical equations of hydrodynamics in (3+1) dimensions describing the motion of a fluid medium in the presence of gravitational and Coriolis forces. We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of solutions expressed in terms of Riemann invariants for an inhomogeneous quasilinear system of partial differential equations. The paper contains a detailed exposition of the theory of simple wave solutions and a presentation of the main tool used to study the Cauchy problem. A systematic use is made of the generalized method of characteristics in order to generate several classes of wave solutions written in terms of Riemann invariants.

A Lie systems approach to the Riccati hierarchy and partial differential equations

It is proved that the members of the Riccati hierarchy, the so-called Riccati chain equations, can be considered as particular cases of projective Riccati equations, which greatly simplifies the study of the Riccati hierarchy. This also allows us to characterize Riccati chain equations geometrically in terms of the projective vector fields of a flat Riemannian metric and to easily derive their associated superposition rules. Next, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which it is possible to map second-order Riccati chain equations into conformal Riccati equations through a local diffeomorphism. This fact can be used to determine superposition rules for particular higher-order Riccati chain equations which depend on fewer particular solutions than in the general case. Therefore, we analyze the properties of Euclidean, hyperbolic and projective vector fields on the plane in detail. Finally, the use of contact transformations enables us to apply the derived results to the study of certain integrable partial differential equations, such as the Kaup-Kupershmidt and Sawada-Kotera equations.

Supersymmetric versions of the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for immersion

In this paper, we construct and investigate two supersymmetric versions of the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for the immersion of 2D surfaces associated with a supersymmetric integrable system. The first version involves an infinitesimal deformation of the zero-curvature condition and the linear spectral problem associated with this system. This deformation leads the surfaces to be represented in terms of a bosonic supermatrix immersed in a Lie superalgebra. The second supersymmetric version is obtained by using a fermionic parameter deformation to construct surfaces expressed in terms of a fermionic supermatrix immersed in a Lie superalgebra. For both extensions, we provide a geometrical characterization of deformed surfaces using the super Killing form as an inner product and a super moving frame formalism. The theoretical results are applied to the supersymmetric sine-Gordon equation in order to construct super soliton surfaces associated with five different symmetries. We find integrated forms of these surfaces which represent constant Gaussian curvature surfaces and nonlinear Weingarten-type surfaces.

Classical-quantum correspondence for shape-invariant systems

A quantization procedure, which has recently been introduced for the analysis of Painlevé equations, is applied to a general time-independent potential of a Newton equation. This analysis shows that the quantization procedure preserves the exact solvability property for the class of shape-invariant potentials. When a general potential is considered the quantization procedure involves the solution of a Gambier XXVII transcendental equation. Explicit examples involving classical and exceptional orthogonal Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials are discussed.

Multimode solutions of first-order elliptic quasilinear systems obtained from Riemann invariants

Two new approaches to solving first-order quasilinear elliptic systems of PDEs in many dimensions are proposed. The first method is based on an analysis of multimode solutions expressible in terms of Riemann invariants, based on links between two techniques, that of the symmetry reduction method and of the generalized method of characteristics. A variant of the conditional symmetry method for constructing this type of solution is proposed. A specific feature of that approach is an algebraic-geometric point of view, which allows the introduction of specific first-order side conditions consistent with the original system of PDEs, leading to a generalization of the Riemann invariant method for solving elliptic homogeneous systems of PDEs. A further generalization of the Riemann invariants method to the case of inhomogeneous systems, based on the introduction of specific rotation matrices, enables us to weaken the integrability condition. It allows us to establish a connection between the structure of the set of integral elements and the possibility of constructing specific classes of simple mode solutions. These theoretical considerations are illustrated by the examples of an ideal plastic flow in its elliptic region and a system describing a nonlinear interaction of waves and particles. Several new classes of solutions are obtained in explicit form, including the general integral for the latter system of equations.

Soliton surfaces and generalized symmetries of integrable systems

In this paper, we discuss some specific features of symmetries of integrable systems which can be used to contruct the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for the immersion of 2D-soliton surfaces, associated with such systems, in Lie algebras. We establish the sufficient condition for the applicability of this formula. This condition requires the existence of two vector fields which generate a common symmetry of the initial system and its corresponding linear spectral problem. This means that these two fields have to be group-related and we determine an explicit form of this relation. It provides a criterion for the selection of symmetries suitable for the use of the Fokas-Gel'fand formula. We include some examples illustrating its application.

Soliton surfaces via zero-curvature representation of differential equations

The main aim of this paper is to introduce a new version of the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for immersion of soliton surfaces in Lie algebras. The paper contains a detailed exposition of the technique for obtaining exact forms of 2D-surfaces associated with any solution of a given nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) which can be written in zero-curvature form. That is, for any generalized symmetry of the zero-curvature condition of the associated integrable model, it is possible to construct soliton surfaces whose Gauss-Mainardi-Codazzi equations are equivalent to infinitesimal deformations of the zero-curvature representation of the considered model. Conversely, it is shown (Proposition 1) that for a given immersion function of a 2D-soliton surface in a Lie algebra, it possible to derive the associated generalized vector field in evolutionary form which characterizes all symmetries of the zero-curvature condition. The theoretical considerations are illustrated via surfaces associated with the Painlevé equations P1, P2 and P3, including transcendental functions, the special cases of the rational and Airy solutions of P2 and the classical solutions of P3.

Soliton surfaces associated with sigma models; differential and algebraic aspect

In this paper, we consider both differential and algebraic properties of surfaces associated with sigma models. It is shown that surfaces defined by the generalized Weierstrass formula for immersion for solutions of the CP^{N-1} sigma model with finite action, defined in the Riemann sphere, are themselves solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations for sigma models. On the other hand, we show that the Euler-Lagrange equations for surfaces immersed in the Lie algebra su(N), with conformal coordinates, that are extremals of the area functional subject to a fixed polynomial identity are exactly the Euler-Lagrange equations for sigma models. In addition to these differential constraints, the algebraic constraints, in the form of eigenvalues of the immersion functions, are treated systematically. The spectrum of the immersion functions, for different dimensions of the model, as well as its symmetry properties and its transformation under the action of the ladder operators are discussed. Another approach to the dynamics is given, i.e. description in terms of the unitary matrix which diagonalizes both the immersion functions and the projectors constituting the model.

Soliton surfaces associated with CP^{N-1} sigma models

Soliton surfaces associated with CP^{N-1} sigma models are constructed using the Generalized Weierstrass and the Fokas-Gel'fand formulas for immersion of 2D surfaces in Lie algebras. The considered surfaces are defined using continuous deformations of the zero-curvature representation of the model and its associated linear spectral problem. The theoretical framework is discussed in detail and several new examples of such surfaces are presented.

Soliton surfaces associated with symmetries of ODEs written in Lax representation

The main aim of this paper is to discuss recent results on the adaptation of the Fokas-Gel'fand procedure for constructing soliton surfaces in Lie algebras, which was originally derived for PDEs [Grundland, Post 2011], to the case of integrable ODEs admitting Lax representations. We give explicit forms of the $\g$-valued immersion functions based on conformal symmetries involving the spectral parameter, a gauge transformation of the wave function and generalized symmetries of the linear spectral problem. The procedure is applied to a symmetry reduction of the static $ϕ^4$-field equations leading to the Jacobian elliptic equation. As examples, we obtain diverse types of surfaces for different choices of Jacobian elliptic functions for a range of values of parameters.
