Riemann Invariants and Rank-k Solutions of Hyperbolic Systems

In this paper we employ a "direct method" in order to obtain rank-k solutions of any hyperbolic system of first order quasilinear differential equations in many dimensions. We discuss in detail the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of these type of solutions written in terms of Riemann invariants. The most important characteristic of this approach is the introduction of specific first order side conditions consistent with the original system of PDEs, leading to a generalization of the Riemann invariant method of solving multi-dimensional systems of PDEs. We have demonstrated the usefulness of our approach through several examples of hydrodynamic type systems; new classes of solutions have been obtained in a closed form.

Surfaces immersed in su(N+1) Lie algebras obtained from the CP^N sigma models

We study some geometrical aspects of two dimensional orientable surfaces arrising from the study of CP^N sigma models. To this aim we employ an identification of R^(N(N+2)) with the Lie algebra su(N+1) by means of which we construct a generalized Weierstrass formula for immersion of such surfaces. The structural elements of the surface like its moving frame, the Gauss-Weingarten and the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are expressed in terms of the solution of the CP^N model defining it. Further, the first and second fundamental forms, the Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature vector, the Willmore functional and the topological charge of surfaces are expressed in terms of this solution. We present detailed implementation of these results for surfaces immersed in su(2) and su(3) Lie algebras.

Description of surfaces associated with Grassmannian sigma models on Minkowski space

We construct and investigate smooth orientable surfaces in su(N) algebras. The structural equations of surfaces associated with Grassmannian sigma models on Minkowski space are studied using moving frames adapted to the surfaces. The first and second fundamental forms of these surfaces as well as the relations between them as expressed in the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are found. The scalar curvature and the mean curvature vector expressed in terms of a solution of Grassmanian sigma model are obtained.

Description of surfaces associated with $CP^{N-1}$ sigma models on Minkowski space

The objective of this paper is to construct and investigate smooth orientable surfaces in $R^{N^2-1}$ by analytical methods. The structural equations of surfaces in connection with $CP^{N-1}$ sigma models on Minkowski space are studied in detail. This is carried out using moving frames adapted to surfaces immersed in the $su(N)$ algebra. The first and second fundamental forms of this surface as well as the relations between them as expressed in the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are found. The Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature vector and the Willmore functional expressed in terms of a solution of $CP^{N-1}$ sigma model are obtained. An example of a surface associated with the $CP^1$ model is included as an illustration of the theoretical results.

On CP1 and CP2 maps and Weierstrass representations for surfaces immersed into multi-dimensional Euclidean spaces

An extension of the classic Enneper-Weierstrass representation for conformally parametrised surfaces in multi-dimensional spaces is presented. This is based on low dimensional CP^1 and CP^2 sigma models which allow the study of the constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces immersed into Euclidean 3- and 8-dimensional spaces, respectively. Relations of Weierstrass type systems to the equations of these sigma models are established. In particular, it is demonstrated that the generalised Weierstrass representation can admit different CMC-surfaces in R^3 which have globally the same Gauss map. A new procedure for constructing CMC-surfaces in R^n is presented and illustrated in some explicit examples.

Solutions of the generalized Weierstrass representation in four-dimensional Euclidean space

Several classes of solutions of the generalized Weierstrass system, which induces constant mean curvature surfaces into four-dimensional Euclidean space are constructed. A gauge transformation allows us to simplify the system considered and derive factorized classes of solutions. A reduction of the generalized Weierstrass system to decoupled CP^1 sigma models is also considered. A new procedure for constructing certain classes of solutions, including elementary solutions (kinks and bumps) and multisoliton solutions is described in detail. The constant mean curvature surfaces associated with different types of solutions are presented. Some physical interpretations of the results obtained in the area of string theory are given.

On complete integrability of the generalized Weierstrass system

In this paper we study certain aspects of the complete integrability of the Generalized Weierstrass system in the context of the Sinh-Gordon type equation. Using the conditional symmetry approach, we construct the Bäcklund transformation for the Generalized Weierstrass system which is determined by coupled Riccati equations. Next a linear spectral problem is found which is determined by nonsingular $2 \times 2$ matrices based on an $sl (2, \mathbb C)$ representation. We derive the explicit form of the Darboux transformation for the Weierstrass system. New classes of multisoliton solutions of the Generalized Weierstrass system are obtained through the use of the Bäcklund transformation and some physical applications of these results in the area of classical string theory are presented.

Weak Transversality and Partially Invariant Solutions

New exact solutions are obtained for several nonlinear physical equations, namely the Navier-Stokes and Euler systems, an isentropic compressible fluid system and a vector nonlinear Schroedinger equation. The solution methods make use of the symmetry group of the system in situations when the standard Lie method of symmetry reduction is not applicable.

Multivortex Solutions of the Weierstrass Representation

The connection between the complex Sine and Sinh-Gordon equations on the complex plane associated with a Weierstrass type system and the possibility of construction of several classes of multivortex solutions is discussed in detail. We perform the Painlevé test and analyse the possibility of deriving the Bäcklund transformation from the singularity analysis of the complex Sine-Gordon equation. We make use of the analysis using the known relations for the Painlevé equations to construct explicit formulae in terms of the Umemura polynomials which are $τ$-functions for rational solutions of the third Painlevé equation. New classes of multivortex solutions of a Weierstrass system are obtained through the use of this proposed procedure. Some physical applications are mentioned in the area of the vortex Higgs model when the complex Sine-Gordon equation is reduced to coupled Riccati equations.

On the solutions of the $CP^{1}$ model in $(2+1)$ dimensions

We use the methods of group theory to reduce the equations of motion of the $CP^{1}$ model in (2+1) dimensions to sets of two coupled ordinary differential equations. We decouple and solve many of these equations in terms of elementary functions, elliptic functions and Painlev{é} transcendents. Some of the reduced equations do not have the Painlev{é} property thus indicating that the model is not integrable, while it still posesses many properties of integrable systems (such as stable ``numerical'' solitons).
