A Purely Classical Derivation of the Meissner Effect?

A recent study (arXiv:1109.1968v2, to be published in American Journal of Physics) claims to provide a classical explanation of the Meissner effect. However, the argument misuses de Gennes' derivation of flux expulsion in superconductors.

Superconducting antenna for detection of gravitational waves

Combining the principle of magnetic flux quantization inside a superconducting loop and existence of rigid platforms (i.e., solids, non-deformable under the action of gravitational waves) a design for gravitational wave antenna is suggested. This design could yield a non-resonant detector, with modest sizes and capability to generate detectable signals for gravitational waves from astrophysical sources.

Simultaneous recording of two- and four-probe resistive transitions in doped laser-processed Sr-Ru-O

To confirm previously reported evidence of high-temperature superconductivity in laser processed Sr-Ru-O, we performed simultaneous two-probe and four-probe resistive measurements using bar-geometry samples. A superconducting-type transition with an onset at about 250K was recorded in one of the samples, consistent with our previously reported measurements in the X-bridge geometry. Some compositional details of the samples are also provided which were not known at the time of previous web-publication.

Evidence for High-Temperature Superconductivity in Doped Laser-Processed Sr-Ru-O

We have discovered that samples of a new material produced by special processing of crystals of Sr2RuO4 (which is known to be a triplet superconductor with Tc values ~1.0-1.5K) exhibit signatures of superconductivity (zero DC resistance and expulsion of magnetic flux) at temperatures exceeding 200K. The special processing includes deposition of a silver coating and laser micromachining; Ag doping and enhanced oxygen are observed in the resultant surface layer. The transition, whether measured resistively or by magnetic field expulsion, is broad. When the transition is registered by resistive methods, the critical temperature is markedly reduced when the measuring current is increased. The resistance disappears by about 190K. The highest value of Tc registered by magneto-optical visualization is about 220K and even higher values (up to 250K) are indicated from the SQUID-magnetometer measurements.

Phonon deficit effect and solid state refrigerators based on superconducting tunnel junctions

Thin film devices have the advantage of being extremely compact, operate in a continuous mode, dissipate little power, and can easily be integrated in cryogenic detectors. Motivated by such possibilities, we investigate the phonon deficit effect in thin film $SIS$ (superconductor--insulator--superconductor) and $SIN$ tunnel junctions. Under certain circumstances, the phonon absorption spectra of such tunnel junctions have spectral windows of phonon absorption/emission. We propose to use phonon filters to select the phonon absorbtion windows and thus to enhance the cooling effect. Membranes attached to such tunnel junctions can be cooled in this way more effectively. We discuss a particular superlattice design of corresponding phonon filters.
