Hot spots in near-field optics

We investigate the critical points of the near field intensity. It is shown that there are no local maxima of the intensity outside dielectric surfaces and the only possible critical points are either local minima or saddle points. Using the boundary charge method we investigate numerically the field distribution around star-like sets of prolate spheroids. The field enhancement is shown to achieve a value of several hundreds at critical points outside the surfaces of spheroids and of several thousands near the surfaces.

Surface-active dust in a plasma sheath

The inhomogeneity of the plasma pressure near a conducting electrode is a cause for introducing the surface tension associated with the plasma-electrode interface. We evaluate the dependence of the surface tension on the density of the charged dust immersed in the plasma sheath. In a wide range of parameters, the surface tension turns out to be an increasing function of the dust density.

Interaction between dust grains near a conducting wall

The effect of the conducting electrode on the interaction of dust grains in a an ion flow is discussed. It is shown that two grains levitating above the electrode at the same height may attract one another. This results in the instability of a dust layer in a plasma sheath.

The Gravitational Cherenkov Radiation

An example of discontinuity of the energy-momentum tensor moving at superluminal velocity is discussed. It is shown that the gravitational Mach cone is formed. The power spectrum of the corresponding Cherenkov radiation is evaluated.

Rotational kinetics of absorbing dust grains in neutral gas

We study the rotational and translational kinetics of massive particulates (dust grains) absorbing the ambient gas. Equations for microscopic phase densities are deduced resulting in the Fokker-Planck equation for the dust component. It is shown that although there is no stationary distribution, the translational and rotational temperatures of dust tend to certain values, which differ from the temperature of the ambient gas. The influence of the inner structure of grains on rotational kinetics is also discussed.

Pulse interaction in nonlinear vacuum electrodynamics

The energy-momentum conservation law is used to investigate the interaction of pulses in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics with Lorentz-invariant constitutive relations. It is shown that for the pulses of the arbitrary shape the interaction results in phase shift only.

Radiometric force in dusty plasmas

A radiofrequency glow discharge plasma, which is polluted with a certain number of dusty grains, is studied. In addition to various dusty plasma phenomena, several specific colloidal effects should be considered. We focus on radiometric forces, which are caused by inhomogeneous temperature distribution. Aside from thermophoresis, the role of temperature distribution in dusty plasmas is an open question. It is shown that inhomogeneous heating of the grain by ion flows results in a new photophoresis like force, which is specific for dusty discharges. This radiometric force can be observable under conditions of recent microgravity experiments.
