Quantum current magnification in a multi-channel mesoscopic ring

We have studied the current magnification effect in a multi-channel open mesoscopic ring. We show that the current magnification effect is robust even in the presence of several propagating modes inspite of mode mixing and cancellation effects. The magnitude of circulating currents in the multi-channel regime can be much larger than that in a single channel case. Impurities can enhance or degrade the current magnification effect depending sensitively on the system parameters. Circulating currents are mostly associated with Fano resonances in the total transport current. We further show that system-lead coupling qualitatively changes the current magnification effect.

Hartman effect in presence of Aharanov Bohm flux

The Hartman effect for the tunneling particle implies the independence of group delay time on the opaque barrier width, with superluminal velocities as a consequence. This effect is further examined on a quantum ring geometry in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux. We show that while tunneling through an opaque barrier the group delay time for given incident energy becomes independent of the barrier thickness as well as the magnitude of the flux. The Hartman effect is thereby extended beyond one dimension and in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux.

Entropy production, energy loss and currents in adiabatically rocked thermal ratchets

We study the nature of currents, input energy and entropy production in different types of adiabatically rocked ratchets using the method of stochastic energetics. The currents exhibit a peak as a function of noise strength. We show that there is no underlying resonance or synchronisation phenomena in the dynamics of the particle with these current peaks. This follows from the analysis of energy loss in the medium. We also show that the maxima seen in current as well as the total entropy production are not directly correlated.

Transport Coherence in Frictional Ratchets

We study the phenomena of noise induced transport in frictional ratchet systems. For this we consider a Brownian particle moving in a space dependent frictional medium in the presence of external white noise fluctuations. To get the directed transport, unlike in other ratchet models like flashing or rocking ratchets etc., we do not require the potential experienced by the particle to be asymmetric nor do we require the external fluctuations to be correlated. We have obtained analytical expressions for current and the diffusion coefficient. We show that the frictional ratchet do not exhibit a pronounced coherence in the transport in that the diffusion spread overshadows the accompanying directed transport in system with finite spatial extensions.

Equilibrium currents in quantum double ring system: A non-trivial role of system-reservoir coupling

Amperes law states that the magnetic moment of a ring is given by current times the area enclosed. Also from equilibrium statistical mechanics it is known that magnetic moment is the derivative of free energy with respect to magnetic field. In this work we analyze a quantum double ring system interacting with a reservoir. A simple S-Matrix model is used for system-reservoir coupling. We see complete agreement between the aforesaid two definitions when coupling between system and reservoir is weak, increasing the strength of coupling parameter however leads to disagreement between the two. Thereby signifying the important role played by the coupling parameter in mesoscopic systems.

Features in Evanescent Aharonov-Bohm interferometry

In this work we analyze an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer in the tunneling regime. In this regime, current magnification effect which arises in presence of transport currents is absent. A slight modification in the form of a quantum well incorporated in one of the arms leads to revival of current magnification. Systematics in magneto-conductance oscillations are observed in this evanescent wave geometry. In this framework we also see absence of Fano lineshapes in transmission resonances but once again one can recover these if the direct path supports propagating modes.

Bona fide Stochastic Resonance: A view point from stochastic energetics

We investigate the resonance type behaviour of an overdamped Brownian particle in a bistable potential driven by external periodic signal. It has been shown previously that the input energy pumped into the system by the external drive shows resonance type behaviour as function of noise strength. We further extend this idea to study the behaviour as function of frequency of the external driving force and show the occurrence of similar nonmonotonic behaviour, which can be ascribed as a signature of bona fide stochastic resonance. Both weak and strong driving limit has been explored indicating the occurrence of marginal supra-threshold stochastic resonance in a bistable potential system.

Wave attenuation model for dephasing and measurement of conditional times

Inelastic scattering induces dephasing in mesoscopic systems. An analysis of previous models to simulate inelastic scattering in such systems is presented and also a relatively new model based on wave attenuation is introduced. The problem of Aharonov-Bohm(AB) oscillations in conductance of a mesoscopic ring is studied. We have shown that conductance is symmetric under flux reversal and visibility of AB oscillations decay to zero as function of the incoherence parameter, signalling dephasing. Further wave attenuation is applied to a fundamental problem in quantum mechanics, i.e., the conditional(reflection/transmission) times spent in a given region of space by a quantum particle before scattering off from that region.

Survival of $Φ_{0}/2$ periodicity in presence of incoherence in asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm rings

Magneto conductance oscillations periodic in flux with periodicity $Φ_{0}$ and $Φ_{0}/2$ are seen in asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm rings as a function of density of electrons or Fermi wave vector. Dephasing of these oscillations is incorporated using a simple approach of wave attenuation. In this work we study how the excitation of the $Φ_{0}/2$ oscillations and the accompanying phase change of $π$ are affected by dephasing. Our results show that the $Φ_{0}/2$ oscillations survive incoherence, i.e., dephasing, albeit with reduced visibility while incoherence is also unable to obliterate the phase change of $π$.

A comparative study of some models of incoherence at the mesoscopic scale

The pre-existing literature on phenomena at the mesoscopic scale is concerned among other things with phase coherent transport. Phase coherent transport dominates at very low temperatures. With increase in temperature, as the system size becomes comparable to the inelastic mean free path phase incoherence sets in. This incoherence further leads to dephasing, and as a consequence purely quantum effects in electron transport give way to classical macroscopic behavior. In this work we consider two distinct phenomenological models of incoherent transport, the Coherent Absorption and Wave Attenuation models. We reveal some physical problems in the Coherent Absorption model as opposed to the Wave Attenuation model. We also compare our proposed model with experiments in case of the much studied peak to valley ratios in resonant tunneling diodes, magneto-conductance oscillations and Fano resonances in case of Aharonov-Bohm rings.

Giant diffusion and coherent transport in tilted periodic inhomogeneous systems

We investigate the dynamics of an overdamped Brownian particle moving in a washboard potential with space dependent friction coefficient. Analytical expressions have been obtained for current and diffusion coefficient. We show that the effective diffusion coefficient can be enhanced or suppressed compared to that of the uniform friction case. The diffusion coefficient is maximum near the critical threshold ($F_{c}$), which is sensitive to temperature and the frictional profile. In some parameter regime we observe that increase in noise (temperature) decreases the diffusion, which is counter-intuitive. This leads to coherent transport with large mean velocity accompanied by small diffusion. This is shown explicitly by analysis of Péclet number, which has been introduced to study coherent or optimal transport. This phenomena is complementary to giant diffusion.

A Biologically Inspired Ratchet Model of Two Coupled Brownian Motors

A ratchet model for coupled Brownian motors, inspired by the motion of individual two-headed molecular motors on cytoskeletal filaments, is proposed. Such motors are modeled as two elastically coupled Brownian particles, each of which moves in a flashing ratchet potential. The ratchet potentials felt by the individual particles are anti-correlated, modeling the successive binding and unbinding of the two motor heads to the filament. We obtain, via Langevin simulations, steady-state currents as functions of noise strength, the equilibrium separation of the particles and the rate of switching between potential states. We observe an enhanced current due to coupling, noise induced stability and phase-locked behaviour in the deterministic regime. A qualitative understanding of these features is provided.

Wave attenuation to clock sojourn times

The subject of time in quantum mechanics is of perennial interest especially because there is no observable for the time taken by a particle to transmit (or reflect) from a particular region. Several methods have been proposed based on scattering phase shifts and using different quantum clocks, where the time taken is clocked by some external input or indirectly from the phase of the scattering amplitudes. In this work we give a general method for calculating conditional sojourn times based on wave attenuation. In this approach clock mechanism does not couple to the Hamiltonian of the system. For simplicity, specific case of a delta dimer is considered in detail. Our analysis re-affirms recent results based on correcting quantum clocks using optical potential methods, albeit in a much simpler way.

Dephasing via stochastic absorption: A case study in Aharonov-Bohm oscillations

The Aharonov-Bohm ring has been the mainstay of mesoscopic physics research since its inception. In this paper we have dwelt on the problem of dephasing of AB oscillations using a phenomenological model based on stochastic absorption. To calculate the conductance in the presence of inelastic scattering we have used the method due to Brouwer and Beenakker. We have shown that conductance is symmetric under flux reversal and visibility of AB oscillations decay to zero as a function of the incoherence parameter thus signalling dephasing in the system. Some comments are made on the relative merits of stochastic absorption with respect to optical potential model, which have been used to mimic dephasing.

The conditional tunneling time for reflection using the WKB wave-function

We derive an expression for the conditional time for the reflection of a wave from an arbitrary potential barrier using the WKB wavefunction in the barrier region. Our result indicates that the conditional times for transmission and reflection are equal for a symmetric barrier within the validity of the WKB approach.

Study of quantum current enhancement, eigenenergy spectra and magnetic moments in a multiply connected system at equilibrium

A multiply connected system in both its open and closed form variations but in equilibrium is studied using quantum waveguide theory. The system exhibits remarkable features, in its open form variation we see current enhancement, hitherto seen only in non-equilibrium systems in absence of magnetic flux. In its closed form analog parity effects are broken. Further we analyse the global and local current densities of our system and also show that the orbital magnetic response of the system calculated from the current densities (and inherently linked to the topological configuration) is qualitatively not same as that calculated from the eigenenergy spectra.

Current magnification effect in mesoscopic systems at equilibrium

We study the current magnification effect and associated circulating currents in mesoscopic systems at equilibrium. Earlier studies have revealed that in the presence of transport current(non-equilibrium situation), circulating currents can flow in a ring even in the absence of magnetic field. This was attributed to current magnification which is quantum mechanical in origin. We have shown that the same effect can be obtained in equilibrium systems, however, in the presence of magnetic flux. For this we have considered an one-dimensional open mesoscopic ring connected to a bubble, and the system is in contact with a single reservoir. We have considered a special case where bubble does not enclose magnetic flux, yet circulating currents can flow in it due to current magnification.

Energetics of rocked inhomogeneous ratchets

We study the efficiency of frictional thermal ratchets driven by finite frequency driving force and in contact with a heat bath. The efficiency exhibits varied behavior with driving frequency. Both nonmonotonic and monotonic behavior have been observed. In particular the magnitude of efficiency in finite frequency regime may be more than the efficiency in the adiabatic regime. This is our central result for rocked ratchets. We also show that for the simple potential we have chosen, the presence of only spatial asymmetry (homogeneous system) or only frictional ratchet (symmetric potential profile), the adiabatic efficiency is always more than in the nonadiabatic case.
