Short-range correlations in semi-exclusive electron scattering experiments

One-nucleon emission electron scattering experiments are studied with a model that considers short--range correlations up to the first order in the number of correlation lines. The proper normalization of the many-body wave functions requires the evaluation of two- and three-point diagrams, the last ones usually neglected in the literature. When all these diagrams are included the effects of the short-range correlations are rather small. The results of our calculations are compared with experimental data taken on $^{16}$O.

Electron scattering with a short-range correlation model

The inclusive electromagnetic responses in the quasi-elastic region are calculated with a model which considers the terms of the cluster expansion containinga single correlation line. The validity of this model is studied by comparing, in nuclear matter, its results with those of a complete calculation. Results in finite nuclei for both one-and two-nucleon emission are presented.

Nuclear currents based on the integral form of the continuity equation

We present an approach to obtain new forms of the nuclear electromagnetic current, which is based on an integral form of the continuity equation. The procedure can be used to restore current conservation in model calculations in which the continuity equation is not verified. Besides, it provides, as a particular result, the so-called Siegert's form of the nuclear current, first obtained by Friar and Fallieros by extending Siegert's theorem to arbitrary values of the momentum transfer. The new currents are explicitly conserved and permit a straightforward analysis of their behavior at both low and high momentum transfers. The results are illustrated with a simple nuclear model which includes a harmonic oscillator mean potential.

Analysis of Meson Exchange and Isobar Currents in (e,e'p) Reactions from O-16

An analysis of the effects of meson exchange and isobar currents in exclusive (e,e'p) processes from O-16 under quasi-free kinematics is presented. A model that has probed its feasibility for inclusive quasi-elastic (e,e') processes is considered. Sensitivity to final state interactions between the outgoing proton and the residual nucleus is discussed by comparing the results obtained with phenomenological optical potentials and a continuum nuclear shell-model calculation. The contribution of the meson-exchange and isobar currents to the response functions is evaluated and compared to previous calculations, which differ notably from our results. These two-body contributions cannot solve the puzzle of the simultaneous description of the different responses experimentally separated. Copyright 1999 by The American Physical Society

Mean field description of electron induced quasi-elastic excitation in nuclei

The validity of the approximations done in the mean field description of the quasi-elastic excitation of medium-heavy nuclei is discussed. A test of the reliability of the plane wave Born approximation is presented. The uncertainty related to the choice of the electromagnetic nucleon form factors is discussed. The effects produced by the meson exchange currents generated by the exchange of a single pion are studied, as well as the need of including relativistic corrections to the one-body currents. The results of the continuum shell model and those of the Fermi gas model are compared and the need of treating the emitted nucleon within a relativistic framework is studied. We analyze the results of Random Phase Approximation calculations not only in terms of their effects on the mean field responses, but also in terms of the theoretical consistency in the choice of the effective residual interaction. The role of the final state interaction is investigated. A microscopic justification of the use of complex optical potential to describe the final state interaction is provided. The effects of the final state interaction on the mean field responses are studied with a sum rule conserving model. A comparison with the experimental data measured in the C12 and Ca40 nuclei is shown.

A Method to Determine the In-Air Spatial Spread of Clinical Electron Beams

We propose and analyze in detail a method to measure the in-air spatial spread parameter of clinical electron beams. Measurements are performed at the center of the beam and below the adjustable collimators sited in asymmetrical configuration in order to avoid the distortions due to the presence of the applicator. The main advantage of our procedure lies in the fact that the dose profiles are fitted by means of a function which includes, additionally to the Gaussian step usually considered, a background which takes care of the dose produced by different mechanisms that the Gaussian model does not account for. As a result, the spatial spread is obtained directly from the fitting procedure and the accuracy permits a good determination of the angular spread. The way the analysis is done is alternative to that followed by the usual methods based on the evaluation of the penumbra width. Besides, the spatial spread found shows the quadratic-cubic dependence with the distance to the source predicted by the Fermi-Eyges theory. However, the corresponding values obtained for the scattering power are differing from those quoted by ICRU nr. 35 by a factor ~2 or larger, what requires of a more detailed investigation.

A model of short-range correlations in the charge response

The validity of a model treating the short-range correlations up to the first order is studied by calculating the charge response of an infinite system and comparing the obtained results with those of a Fermi Hypernetted Chain calculation.

Radiative pion capture in nuclei: a continuum shell-model approach

The radiative pion capture process in nuclei is approached by using a continuum shell-model description of the nucleus, together with a phenomenological treatment of the two particle-two hole effects. It is found that these effects play an important role to reproduce the observed experimental photon energy distribution. This distribution as well as the integrated one depends significantly on the details of the mean field potential. This makes this process interesting to investigate the nuclear structure dynamics.

Meson-exchange contributions to the nuclear charge operator

The role of the meson-exchange current correction to the nuclear charge operator is studied in electron scattering processes involving the excitation of medium and heavy nuclei to energies up to the quasi-elastic peak. The effect of these contributions in the quasi-free electron scattering process is a reduction of at most a 3% in the longitudinal response at the energy of the peak, a value which is below the experimental error and must not be taken into account in calculations in this energy region. On the other hand, the excitation of low-lying nuclear levels of neutronic character shows, with respect to the protonic ones, a considerable effect due to the inclusion of the two-body term in the charge operator. More realistic calculations, such as those performed in the random-phase approximation framework, give rise to a mixing of one particle-one hole configurations of both kinds which reduce these effects. However, it has been found that the excitation of some of these levels is sizeably affected by the meson-exchange contribution. More precise experimental data concerning some of these states, such as e.g. the high-spin states in 208Pb, could throw some light in the problem of a more feasible determination of these effects and, as a consequence, could provide an alternative procedure to obtain the charge neutron form factor.

Mean-field calculations of quasi-elastic responses in 4He

We present calculations of the quasi-elastic responses functions in 4He based upon a mean-field model used to perform analogous calculations in heavier nuclei. The meson exchange current contribution is small if compared with the results of calculations where short-range correlations are explicitly considered. It is argued that the presence of these correlations in the description of the nuclear wave functions is crucial to make meson exchange current effects appreciable.

Parity violation in quasielastic electron scattering from closed-shell nuclei

The electromagnetic and weak neutral current matrix elements that enter in the analysis of parity-violating quasielastic electron scattering are calculated using a continuum nuclear shell model. New approximations to the on-shell relativistic one-body currents and relativistic kinematics for use in such models are developed and discussed in detail. Results are presented for three closed-shell nuclei of interest: $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb. The current work concludes with a study of the sensitivity of the resulting parity-violating asymmetries to properties of the nucleon form factors including the possible strangeness content of the nucleon.

Short-range Correlations in a CBF description of closed-shell nuclei

The Correlated Basis Function theory (CBF) provides a theoretical framework to treat on the same ground mean-field and short-range correlations. We present, in this report, some recent results obtained using the CBF to describe the ground state properties of finite nuclear systems. Furthermore we show some results for the excited state obtained with a simplified model based on the CBF theory.
