Engineering Altermagnetism via Layer Shifts and Spin Order in Bilayer MnPS$_3$

Altermagnetic materials combine compensated magnetic order with momentum-dependent spin splitting, offering a fundamentally new route for spintronic functionality beyond conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. While most studies have focused on three-dimensional compounds, the emergence of altermagnetism in few-layer two-dimensional materials remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that bilayer MnPS$_3$, a prototypical 2D van der Waals magnet, can host stacking-induced altermagnetic phases. Using density-functional theory and spin-Laue symmetry analysis, we show that interlayer spin alignment and lateral displacement act as coupled symmetry control parameters that switch the system between Type II (collinear AFM) and Type III (altermagnetic) phases. Our systematic exploration reveals how specific stacking geometries enable momentum-dependent spin polarization without net magnetization, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. These results establish stacking engineering as a powerful, purely structural route for designing tunable altermagnetic states in 2D magnets, opening pathways toward symmetry-driven spintronic and magnetoelectronic devices.

Dual Topology as a Fingerprint of Relativistic Altermagnetism in AgF$_2$ Monolayer

Altermagnets have emerged as a fertile ground for quantum phenomena, but topological phases unifying different quasiparticles remain largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that monolayer AgF$_2$ hosts a dual topological state, driven by a single ferroelastic distortion. This polar transition breaks inversion symmetry and unleashes relativistic spin-orbit effects, simultaneously imparting non-trivial topology to electrons and magnons. The result is valence bands with opposite Chern numbers, $C^E=\pm3$, and a magnon spectrum with a full topological gap and chiral bands, $C^M=\pm1$. This work realizes topological altermagnonics in a tangible material platform, with a clear experimental fingerprint in the transverse thermal Hall effect. The coexistence of fermionic and bosonic topology in AgF$_2$ opens new directions for designing intrinsically hybrid quantum matter.

Interplay of structure and magnetism in LuFe4Ge2 tuned by hydrostatic pressure

LuFe$_4$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the ZrFe$_4$Si$_2$-type structure, hosting chains of Fe-tetrahedra giving rise to geometric frustration and low-dimensionality. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at around 36 K accompanied by a simultaneous structural transition from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase. The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic and structural transitions is investigated using electrical-transport, ac magnetic-susceptibility, ac calorimetry, M$\ddot{\rm o}$ssbauer, muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and x-ray diffraction measurements. External pressure suppresses the first-order transition to the antiferromagnetic phase (AFM1) around 1.8 GPa. The structural transition is largely unaffected by pressure and remains between 30 to 35 K for pressures up to 2 GPa. A second antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) is observed at higher pressures. The transition from the paramagnetic to the AFM2 phase is of second-order nature and appears to be connected to the structural transition. The magnetic volume fraction obtained from $μ$SR and M$\ddot{\rm o}$ssbauer measurements reveal that the entire sample undergoes magnetic ordering in both magnetic phases. In addition, similar low-temperature muon-precession frequencies in AFM1 and AFM2 phases point at similar ordered moments and magnetic structures in both phases. Our results further indicate enhanced magnetic fluctuations in the pressure induced AFM2 phase. The experimental observations together with density functional theory calculations suggest that the magnetic and structural order parameters in LuFe$_4$Ge$_2$ are linked by magnetic frustration, causing the simultaneous magneto-structural transition.

Tuning magnetic states in CrI$_3$ bilayers via Moiré patterns

Commensurable twisted bilayers can drastically change the magnetic properties of chromium trihalide layered compounds, which opens novel opportunities for tuning magnetic states through layer rotations. Here, we introduce a mathematical approach to obtain moiré patterns in twisted hexagonal bilayers by performing a certain commensurable rotation $θ$ over one layer. To test our approach, we apply it to find moiré structures with $θ=21.79^{\circ}$ and $32.20^{\circ}$ in the phases R$\bar{3}$ and C2/m of CrI$_{3}$. For comparison purposes, we also consider a non-shifted CrI$_{3}$ structure. Electronic and magnetic properties of the so-obtained systems are computed by \textit{Ab-Initio} methodologies. Results show the presence of rotation-angle-dependent magnetic configurations and steep modifications of the dispersion bands due to variations in the nearest and next nearest distances among layers of Cr atoms. Modifications obtained from these commensurable rotations are discussed on the basis of competition among different energy contributions due to changes in the atomic arrangements.
