Structural glasses model using disorder fields: the boson peak from local ground states

We show the emergence of a contribution characteristic of the boson peak in the spectral density of structural glasses. To model the vitreous state, we consider static density-fluctuation fields coupled to a multiplicative quenched disorder. Performing an ensemble average over all disorder realizations, a functional series representation of the average free energy is obtained. In this series representation of the average free energy for the glassy state of matter, we identify in the function space effective actions. These effective actions present a large number of metastable states and ground states. Random first-order transition, widely discussed in the literature as a description of the transition from the supercooled liquid to the glassy state of matter, emerges naturally in our formalism. We establish the connection between the use of hyperbolic differential equations with random coefficients and the presence of many ground states in the average free energy. This connection allows us to study emergent excitations in such amorphous materials.

Hydrodynamic fields in fluctuating environment: a model for isochoric heat capacity of simple liquids

Using functional methods, we investigate the sound quanta arising from quantized hydrodynamic fields in simple liquids at low temperatures, under the influence of high-energy processes, coming from non-hydrodynamic degrees of freedom. To model these effects on the hydrodynamic fields, we assume that the quantum fields are coupled to an additive, delta-correlated (in space and time) quantum noise field. Thus, the hydrodynamic fields are defined in a fluctuating environment. After defining the generating functional of connected correlation functions in the presence of the noise field, we perform a functional integral over all noise field configurations. This is done using a formal object inspired by the distributional zeta-function method, called the configurational zeta-function. We obtain a new generating functional written in terms of an analytically tractable functional series. This formalism allow us to obtain the excitation spectra of liquids. In the liquid, each term of the series describes the emergent non-interacting elementary excitations with the usual phonon-like dispersion relation and additional excitations with dispersion relations with gaps in pseudo-momentum space. Finally, the behavior of the constant volume specific heat as a function of temperature is obtained for different simple liquids.

Universality Classes of Fluctuation Dynamics in Hierarchical Complex Systems

A unified approach is proposed to describe the statistics of the short time dynamics of multiscale complex systems. The probability density function of the relevant time series (signal) is represented as a statistical superposition of a large time-scale distribution weighted by the distribution of certain internal variables that characterize the slowly changing background. The dynamics of the background is formulated as a hierarchical stochastic model whose form is derived from simple physical constraints, which in turn restrict the dynamics to only two possible classes. The probability distributions of both the signal and the background have simple representations in terms of Meijer G-functions. The two universality classes for the background dynamics manifest themselves in the signal distribution as two types of tails: power law and stretched exponential, respectively. A detailed analysis of empirical data from classical turbulence and financial markets shows excellent agreement with the theory.

Quantum dot to disordered wire crossover: A complete solution in all length scales for systems with unitary symmetry

We present an exact solution of a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model describing the crossover between a quantum dot and a disordered quantum wire with unitary symmetry. The system is coupled ideally to two electron reservoirs via perfectly conducting leads sustaining an arbitrary number of propagating channels. We obtain closed expressions for the first three moments of the conductance, the average shot-noise power and the average density of transmission eigenvalues. The results are complete in the sense that they are nonperturbative and are valid in all regimes and length scales. We recover several known results of the recent literature by taking particular limits.

A Brownian Motion Model of Parametric Correlations in Ballistic Cavities

A Brownian motion model is proposed to study parametric correlations in the transmission eigenvalues of open ballistic cavities. We find interesting universal properties when the eigenvalues are rescaled at the hard edge of the spectrum. We derive a formula for the power spectrum of the fluctuations of transport observables as a response to an external adiabatic perturbation. Our formula correctly recovers the Lorentzian-squared behaviour obtained by semiclassical approaches for the correlation function of conductance fluctuations.

Intensity correlations in electronic wave propagation in a disordered medium: the influence of spin-orbit scattering

We obtain explicit expressions for the correlation functions of transmission and reflection coefficients of coherent electronic waves propagating through a disordered quasi-one-dimensional medium with purely elastic diffusive scattering in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. We find in the metallic regime both large local intensity fluctuations and long-range correlations which ultimately lead to universal conductance fluctuations. We show that the main effect of spin-orbit scattering is to suppress both local and long-range intensity fluctuations by a universal symmetry factor 4. We use a scattering approach based on random transfer matrices.

Universal parametric correlations in the transmission eigenvalue spectra of disordered conductors

We study the response of the transmission eigenvalue spectrum of disordered metallic conductors to an arbitrary external perturbation. For systems without time-reversal symmetry we find an exact non-perturbative solution for the two-point correlation function, which exhibits a new kind of universal behavior characteristic of disordered conductors. Systems with orthogonal and symplectic symmetries are studied in the hydrodynamic regime.

Parametric S-matrix fluctuations in quantum theory of chaotic scattering

We study the effects of an arbitrary external perturbation in the statistical properties of the S-matrix of quantum chaotic scattering systems in the limit of isolated resonances. We derive, using supersymmetry, an exact non-perturbative expression for the parameter dependent autocorrelator of two S-matrix elements. Universality is obtained by appropriate rescaling of the physical parameters. We propose this universal function as a new signature of quantum chaos in open systems.
