Total electronic Raman scattering in the charge-density-wave phase of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model

The total electronic Raman scattering spectrum, including the nonresonant, mixed and resonant components, is determined for the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model at half filling within dynamical mean-field theory. Its frequency dependence is investigated for different values of the energy of the incident photons. The spectra reflect the different structures in the density of states and how they are modified by screening and resonance effects. The calculations are performed for the $B_{\rm 1g}$, $B_{\rm 2g}$ and $A_{\rm 1g}$ symmetries (which are typically examined in experiment). Our results for the resonance effects of the Raman spectra, found by tuning the energy of the incident photons, give information about the many-body charge dynamics of the CDW-ordered phase.

Nonresonant Raman and inelastic X-ray scattering in the charge-density-wave phase of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model

Nonresonant inelastic light and X-ray scattering is investigated for the spinless Falicov-Kimball model on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice with a charge-density-wave phase at half filling. The many-body density of states (DOS) is found for different values of the Coulomb repulsion $U$, ranging from a dirty metal to a Mott insulator. At zero temperature, the charge gap is exactly equal to $U$; increasing the temperature rapidly fills the gap with subgap states. The nonresonant response function for Raman and inelastic X-ray scattering shows peaks connected with transitions over the gap and transitions that involve subgap states. In the case of X-ray scattering (when both energy and momentum are transferred), the response function illustrates features of dynamical screening (vertex corrections) in the different (nonresonant) symmetry channels ($A_{\rm 1g}$ and $B_{\rm 1g}$). We also derive and verify the first moment sum rules for the (nonresonant) Raman and inelastic X-ray response functions.

F-electron spectral function of the Falicov-Kimball model and the Wiener-Hopf sum equation approach

We derive an alternative representation for the $f$-electron spectral function of the Falicov-Kimball model from the original one proposed by Brandt and Urbanek. In the new representation, all calculations are restricted to the real time axis, allowing us to go to arbitrarily low temperatures. The general formula for the retarded Green's function involves two determinants of continuous matrix operators that have the Toeplitz form. By employing the Wiener-Hopf sum equation approach and Szegö's theorem, we can derive exact analytic formulas for the large-time limits of the Green's function; we illustrate this for cases when the logarithm of characteristic function (which defines the continuous Toeplitz matrix) does and does not wind around the origin. We show how accurate these asymptotic formulas are to the exact solutions found from extrapolating matrix calculations to the zero discretization size limit.

Optical and dc transport properties of a strongly correlated charge density wave system: exact solution in the ordered phase of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model with dynamical mean-field theory

We derive the dynamical mean-field theory equations for transport in an ordered charge-density-wave phase on a bipartite lattice. The formalism is applied to the spinless Falicov-Kimball model on a hypercubic lattice at half filling. We determine the many-body density of states, the dc charge and heat conductivities, and the optical conductivity. Vertex corrections continue to vanish within the ordered phase, but the density of states and the transport coefficients show anomalous behavior due to the rapid development of thermally activated subgap states. We also examine the optical sum rule and sum rules for the first three moments of the Green's functions within the ordered phase and see that the total optical spectral weight in the ordered phase either decreases or increases depending on the strength of the interactions.

Electronic thermal transport in strongly correlated multilayered nanostructures

The formalism for a linear-response many-body treatment of the electronic contributions to thermal transport is developed for multilayered nanostructures. By properly determining the local heat-current operator, it is possible to show that the Jonson-Mahan theorem for the bulk can be extended to inhomogeneous problems, so the various thermal-transport coefficient integrands are related by powers of frequency (including all effects of vertex corrections when appropriate). We illustrate how to use this formalism by showing how it applies to measurements of the Peltier effect, the Seebeck effect, and the thermal conductance.

On the spectral relations for multitime correlation functions

A general approach for derivation of the spectral relations for the multitime correlation functions is presented. A special attention is paid to the consideration of the non-ergodic (conserving) contributions and it is shown that such contributions can be treated in a rigorous way using multitime temperature Green functions. Representation of the multitime Green functions in terms of the spectral densities and solution of the reverse problem -- finding of the spectral densities from the known Green functions are given for the case of the three-time correlation functions.

Electronic Raman scattering in correlated materials: exact treatment of nonresonant, mixed, and resonant scattering with dynamical mean field theory

We solve for the electronic Raman scattering response functions on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice employing dynamical mean field theory. This contribution extends previous work on the nonresonant response to include the mixed and resonant contributions. We focus our attention on the spinless Falicov-Kimball model, where the problem can be solved exactly, and the system can be tuned to go through a Mott-Hubbard-like metal-insulator transition. Resonant effects vary in different scattering geometries, corresponding to the symmetries of the charge excitations scattered by the light. We do find that the Raman response is large near the double resonance, where the transfered frequency is close to the incident photon frequency. We also find a joint resonance of both the charge-transfer peak and the low-energy peak when the incident photon frequency is on the order of the interaction strength. In general, the resonance effects can create order of magnitude (or more) enhancements of features in the nonresonant response, especially when the incident photon frequency is somewhat larger than the frequency of the nonresonant feature. Finally, we find that the resonant effects also exhibit isosbestic behavior, even in the A1g and B2g sectors, and it is most prominent when the incident photon frequency is on the order of the interaction energy.

Resonant Enhancement of Electronic Raman Scattering

We present an exact solution for electronic Raman scattering in a single-band, strongly correlated material, including nonresonant, resonant and mixed contributions. Results are derived for the spinless Falicov-Kimball model, employing dynamical mean field theory; this system can be tuned through a Mott metal-insulator transition.

Resonant Enhancement of Inelastic Light Scattering in Strongly Correlated Materials

We use dynamical mean field theory to find an exact solution for inelastic light scattering in strongly correlated materials such as those near a quantum-critical metal-insulator transition. We evaluate the results for $\textbf{q}=0$ (Raman) scattering and find that resonant effects can be quite large, and yield a triple resonance, a significant enhancement of nonresonant scattering peaks, a joint resonance of both peaks when the incident photon frequency is on the order of $U$, and the appearance of an isosbestic point in all symmetry channels for an intermediate range of incident photon frequencies.

Strong coupling approach in dynamical mean-field theory for strongly correlated electron systems

We review two analytical approaches in Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) based on a perturbation theory expansion over the electron hopping to and from the self consistent environment. In the first approach the effective single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) is formulated in terms of the auxiliary Fermi-fields and the projection (irreducible Green's function) technique is used for its solution. A system of the DMFT equations is obtained that includes as simple specific cases a number of known approximations (Hubbard-III, AA, MAA, ...). The second approach is based on the diagrammatic technique (Wick's theorem) for Hubbard operators that allows to construct a thermodynamically consistent theory when SIAM exactly splits into four components (subspaces): two Fermi liquid and two non-Fermi liquid. The results for the density of states, concentration dependences of the band energies, chemical potential and magnetic order parameters are presented for different self-consistent approximations (AA, strong coupling Hartree--Fock and further).

Equivalence of the Falicov-Kimball and Brandt-Mielsch forms for the free energy of the infinite-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model

Falicov and Kimball proposed a real-axis form for the free energy of the Falicov-Kimball model that was modified for the coherent potential approximation by Plischke. Brandt and Mielsch proposed an imaginary-axis form for the free energy of the dynamical mean field theory solution of the Falicov-Kimball model. It has long been known that these two formulae are numerically equal to each other; an explicit derivation showing this equivalence is presented here.

Correlated hopping in infinite dimensions: Rigorous local approach

The general approach for the description of correlated hopping in the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory which is based on the expansion over electron hopping around the atomic limit is developed. It is formulated in terms of the local irreducible parts (cumulants) of Green's functions and allowed to calculate thermodynamical functions. As a limit case the Falicov-Kimball model with correlated hopping is considered.

Dynamical susceptibilities in strong coupling approach: General scheme and Falikov-Kimball model

A general scheme to calculate dynamical susceptibilities of strongly correlated electron systems within the dynamical mean field theory is developed. Approach is based on an expansion over electron hopping around the atomic limit (within the diagrammatic technique for site operators: projection and Hubbard ones) in infinite dimensions. As an example, the Falicov-Kimball and simplified pseudospin-electron models are considered for which an analytical expressions for dynamical susceptibilities are obtained.

An analytical strong coupling approach in dynamical mean-field theory

In the limit of infinite spatial dimensions a thermodynamically consistent theory of the strongly correlated electron systems, which is valid for arbitrary value of the Coulombic interaction ($U<\infty$), is built. For the Hubbard model the total auxiliary single-site problem exactly splits into four subspaces, which describe Fermi and non-Fermi liquid components. Such analytical approach allows to construct different thermodynamically consistent approximations: alloy-analogy approximation, Hartree-Fock approximation and further, that describes the self-consistent renormalization of the bosonic excitations (magnons and doublons).

Strong coupling Hartree-Fock approximation in the dynamical mean-field theory

In the limit of infinite spatial dimensions a thermodynamically consistent theory, which is valid for arbitrary value of the Coulombic interaction ($U<\infty$), is built for the Hubbard model when the total auxiliary single-site problem exactly splits into four subspaces with different ``vacuum states''. Some analytical results are given for the Hartree-Fock approximation when the 4-pole structure for Green's function is obtained: two poles describe contribution from the Fermi liquid component, which is ferromagnetic and dominant for small electron and hole concentrations (``overdoped case'' of high-$T_c$'s), whereas other two describe contribution from the non-Fermi liquid, which is antiferromagnetic and dominant close to half filling (``underdoped case'').

Self-consistent approach for thermodynamics of a simplified pseudospin-electron model

We present the method of the self-consistent calculation of thermodynamical and correlation functions. This approach is based on the GRPA (generalized random phase approximation) scheme with the inclusion of the mean field corrections. Investigation of a pseudospin-electron model (PEM) within the framework of the presented method shows that interaction between the electron and pseudospin subsystems leads to the possibility of either first or second order phase transitions between different uniform phases (bistability) as well as between the uniform and the chess-board ones. In the regime n=const, an instability with respect to phase separation in the electron and pseudospin subsystems can take place.
