Longitudinal structure function $F_L$ at low $Q^2$ and low $x$ with model for higher twist: an update

A reanalysis of the model for the longitudinal structure function $F_L (x,Q^2)$ at low $x$ and low $Q^2$ was undertaken, in view of the advent of the EIC. The model is based on the photon-gluon fusion mechanism suitably extrapolated to the region of low $Q^2$. It includes the kinematic constraint $F_L\sim Q^4$ as $Q^2\rightarrow$ 0 and higher twist contribution which vanishes as $Q^2 \rightarrow \infty$. Revised model was critically updated and compared to the presently available data.

Wilson lines in the MHV action

The MHV action is the Yang-Mills action quantized on the light-front, where the two explicit physical gluonic degrees of freedom have been canonically transformed to a new set of fields. This transformation leads to the action with vertices being off-shell continuations of the MHV amplitudes. We show that the solution to the field transformation expressing one of the new fields in terms of the Yang-Mills field is a certain type of the Wilson line. More precisely, it is a straight infinite gauge link with a slope extending to the light-cone minus and the transverse direction. One of the consequences of that fact is that certain MHV vertices reduced partially on-shell are gauge invariant -- a fact discovered before using conventional light-front perturbation theory. We also analyze the diagrammatic content of the field transformations leading to the MHV action. We found that the diagrams for the solution to the transformation (given by the Wilson line) and its inverse differ only by light-front energy denominators. Further, we investigate the coordinate space version of the inverse solution to the one given by the Wilson line. We find an explicit expression given by a power series in fields. We also give a geometric interpretation to it by means of a specially defined vector field. Finally, we discuss the fact that the Wilson line solution to the transformation is directly related to the all-like helicity gluon wave function, while the inverse functional is a generating functional for solutions of self-dual Yang-Mills equations.

Estimating nonlinear effects in forward dijet production in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions at the LHC

Using the framework that interpolates between the leading power limit of the Color Glass Condensate and the High Energy (or $k_{T}$) factorization we calculate the direct component of the forward dijet production in ultra-peripheral $\mathrm{Pb}$-$\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at CM energy $5.1\,\mathrm{TeV}$ per nucleon pair. The formalism is applicable when the average transverse momentum of the dijet system $P_{T}$ is much bigger than the saturation scale $Q_{s}$, $P_{T}\gg Q_{s}$, while the imbalance of the dijet system can be arbitrary. The cross section is uniquely sensitive to the Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) unintegrated gluon distribution, which is far less known from experimental data than the most common dipole gluon distribution appearing in inclusive small-$x$ processes. We have calculated cross sections and nuclear modification ratios using WW gluon distribution obtained from the dipole gluon density through the Gaussian approximation. The dipole gluon distribution used to get WW was fitted to the inclusive HERA data with the nonlinear extension of unified BFKL+DGLAP evolution equation. The saturation effects are visible but rather weak for realistic $p_{T}$ cut on the dijet system, reaching about $20\%$ with the cut as low as $6\,\mathrm{GeV}$. We find that the LO collinear factorization with nuclear leading twist shadowing predicts quite similar effects.

Unintegrated double parton distributions

We present the construction of unintegrated double parton distribution functions which include dependence on transverse momenta of partons. We extend the formulation which was used to obtain the single unintegrated parton distributions from the standard, integrated parton distribution functions. Starting from the homogeneous part of the evolution equations for the integrated double parton distributions, we construct the unintegrated double parton distributions as the convolutions of the integrated double distributions and the splitting functions, multiplied by the Sudakov form factors. We show that there exist three domains of external hard scales which require three distinct forms of the unintegrated double distributions. The additional transverse momentum dependence which arises through the Sudakov form factors leads to non-trivial correlations in the parton momenta. We also discuss the non-homogeneous contribution to the unintegrated double parton distributions, which arises due to the splitting of a single parton into daughter partons with high transverse momenta. We analyze two cases, the unfolding of the transverse momenta dependence from the last step of the evolution of two partons, and the case where the transverse momenta are generated directly from the single parton splitting.

Exploring minijets beyond the leading power

The crucial parameter of the current Monte Carlo models of high energy hadron-hadron interaction is the transverse momentum cutoff $p_{T0}$ for parton-parton interactions which slowly grows with energy and regularizes the cross section. This modification of the collinear factorization formula goes beyond the leading power and thus a natural question arises if such cutoff can be extracted from a formalism which takes into account power corrections. In this work, we consider the High Energy Factorization (HEF) valid at small $x$ and a new model, based on a similar principle to HEF, which in addition has a limit respecting the Dokshitzer-Dyakonov-Troyan formula for the dijet momentum disbalance spectrum. Minijet cross section and its suppression is then analyzed in two ways. First, we study minijets directly in the low-$p_T$ region, and demonstrate that higher twist corrections do generate suppression of the inclusive jet production cross section though these effects are not leading to the increase of the cutoff with incident energy. Second, we consider hard inclusive dijet production where Multi Parton Interactions (MPIs) with minijets produce power corrections. We introduce an observable constructed from differential cross section in the ratio $τ$ of dijet disbalance to the average dijet $p_T$ and demonstrate that the $τ>1$ region is sensitive to the cutoff $p_{T0}$ in the MPI minijet models. The energy dependence of the cutoff is reflected in the energy dependence of the bimodality coefficient $b$ of the $τ$ distribution. We compare $b$ calculated from $\mathsf{pythia}$, where one can conveniently control MPIs by the program parameters, and HEF for a few unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDs). We find that the energy dependence of $b$ is very sensitive to the particular choice of UGD and in some models it resembles predictions of the Monte Carlo models.

Gluon cascades and amplitudes in light-front perturbation theory

We construct the gluon wave functions, fragmentation functions and scattering amplitudes within the light-front perturbation theory. Recursion relations on the light-front are constructed for the wave functions and fragmentation functions, which in the latter case are the light-front analogs of the Berends-Giele recursion relations. Using general relations between wave functions and scattering amplitudes it is demonstrated how to obtain the maximally-helicity violating amplitudes, and explicit verification of the results is based on simple examples.

Next-to-leading and resummed BFKL evolution with saturation boundary

We investigate the effects of the saturation boundary on small-x evolution at the next-to-leading order accuracy and beyond. We demonstrate that the instabilities of the next-to-leading order BFKL evolution are not cured by the presence of the nonlinear saturation effects, and a resummation of the higher order corrections is therefore needed for the nonlinear evolution. The renormalization group improved resummed equation in the presence of the saturation boundary is investigated, and the corresponding saturation scale is extracted. A significant reduction of the saturation scale is found, and we observe that the onset of the saturation corrections is delayed to higher rapidities. This seems to be related to the characteristic feature of the resummed splitting function which at moderately small values of x possesses a minimum.

Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the LHC (MPI08)

The objective of this first workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is to raise the profile of MPI studies, summarizing the legacy from the older phenomenology at hadronic colliders and favouring further specific contacts between the theory and experimental communities. The MPI are experiencing a growing popularity and are currently widely invoked to account for observations that would not be explained otherwise: the activity of the Underlying Event, the cross sections for multiple heavy flavour production, the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in hard diffraction, etc. At the same time, the implementation of the MPI effects in the Monte Carlo models is quickly proceeding through an increasing level of sophistication and complexity that in perspective achieves deep general implications for the LHC physics. The ultimate ambition of this workshop is to promote the MPI as unification concept between seemingly heterogeneous research lines and to profit of the complete experimental picture in order to constrain their implementation in the models, evaluating the spin offs on the LHC physics program.

Parton Distributions

We provide an assessment of the state of the art in various issues related to experimental measurements, phenomenological methods and theoretical results relevant for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their uncertainties, with the specific aim of providing benchmarks of different existing approaches and results in view of their application to physics at the LHC. We discuss higher order corrections, we review and compare different approaches to small x resummation, and we assess the possible relevance of parton saturation in the determination of PDFS at HERA and its possible study in LHC processes. We provide various benchmarks of PDF fits, with the specific aim of studying issues of error propagation, non-gaussian uncertainties, choice of functional forms of PDFs, and combination of data from different experiments and different processes. We study the impact of combined HERA (ZEUS-H1) structure function data, their impact on PDF uncertainties, and their implications for the computation of standard candle processes, and we review the recent F_L determination at HERA. Finally, we compare and assess methods for luminosity measurements at the LHC and the impact of PDFs on them.

Pomeron - Graviton duality

In this lecture I give a short introduction to the high energy limit of hadronic interactions. The elements of the Regge theory, Pomeron in QCD and high energy scattering in AdS/CFT correspondence are presented. I discuss the resummation of the hard Pomeron which in the case of the fixed coupling leads to the value of intercept equal to two in the limit of the strong coupling.

Unitarity Constraints on Semi-hard Jet Production in Impact Parameter Space

The perturbative QCD formula for minijet production consitutes an important ingredient in models describing the total cross section and multiparticle production in hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. Using arguments based on s-channel unitarity we set bounds on the minimum value of p_T for which the leading twist minijet formula can be used. For large impact parameters where correlations between partons appear to be small we find that the minimum value of p_T should be greater than 2.5 GeV for LHC energies and greater than 3.5 GeV for cosmic ray energies of about 50 TeV. We also argue that for collisions with values of impact parameters typical for heavy particle production the values of minimum p_T are likely to be considerably larger. We also analyze and quantify the potential role of saturation effects in the gluon density. We find that although saturation effects alone are not sufficient to restore unitarity, they are likely to play an important role at LHC energies.

A matrix formulation for small-x singlet evolution

We propose a matrix evolution equation in (x,kt)-space for flavour singlet, unintegrated quark and gluon densities, which generalizes DGLAP and BFKL equations in the relevant limits. The matrix evolution kernel is constructed so as to satisfy renormalization group constraints in both the ordered and antiordered regions of exchanged momenta kt, and incorporates the known NLO anomalous dimensions in the MSbar scheme as well as the NLx BFKL kernel. We provide a hard Pomeron exponent and effective eigenvalue functions that include the n_f-dependence, and give also the matrix of resummed DGLAP splitting functions. The results connect smoothly with those of the single-channel approach. The novel P_{qa} splitting functions show resummation effects delayed down to x=0.0001, while both P_{ga} entries show a shallow dip around x=0.001, similarly to the gluon-gluon single-channel results. We remark that the matrix formulation poses further constraints on the consistency of a BFKL framework with the MSbar scheme, which are satisfied at NLO, but marginally violated by small n_f/N_c^2-suppressed terms at NNLO.

Minimal Subtraction vs. Physical Factorisation Schemes in Small-x QCD

We investigate the relationship of ``physical'' parton densities defined by kt-factorisation, to those in the minimal subtraction scheme, by comparing their small-x behaviour. We first summarize recent results on the above scheme change derived from the BFKL equation at NLx level, and we then propose a simple extension to the renormalisation-group improved (RGI) equation. In this way we are able the examine the difference between resummed gluon distributions in the Q_0 and MSbar schemes and also to show MSbar scheme resummed results for P_gg and approximate ones for P_qg. We find that, due to the stability of the RGI approach, small-x resummation effects are not much affected by the scheme-change in the gluon channel, while they are relatively more sensitive for the quark-gluon mixing.

Algebraic models for the hierarchy structure of evolution equations at small x

We explore several models of QCD evolution equations simplified by considering only the rapidity dependence of dipole scattering amplitudes, while provisionally neglecting their dependence on transverse coordinates. Our main focus is on the equations that include the processes of pomeron splittings. We examine the algebraic structures of the governing equation hierarchies, as well as the asymptotic behavior of their solutions in the large-rapidity limit.

Unintegrated gluon distribution from modified BK equation

We investigate the recently proposed nonlinear equation for the unintegrated gluon distribution function which includes the subleading effects at small $x$. We obtained numerically the solution to this equation in $(x,k)$ space, and also the integrated gluon density. The subleading effects affect strongly the normalization and the $x$ and $k$ dependence of the gluon distribution. We show that the saturation scale $Q_s(x)$, which is obtained from this model, is consistent with the one used in the saturation model by Golec-Biernat and Wüsthoff. We also estimate the nonlinear effects by looking at the relative normalization of the solutions to the linear and nonlinear equations. It turns out that the differences are quite large even in the nominally dilute regime, that is when $Q^2 \gg Q_s^2$. Finally, we calculate the dipole-nucleon cross section.

Nonlinear evolution equations in QCD

The following lectures are an introduction to the phenomena of partonic saturation and nonlinear evolution equations in Quantum Chromodynamics. After a short introduction to the linear evolution, the problems of unitarity bound and parton saturation are discussed. The nonlinear Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equation in the high energy limit is introduced, and the progress towards the understanding of the properties of its solution is reviewed. We discuss the concepts of the saturation scale, geometrical scaling and the lack of the infrared diffusion. Finally, we give a brief summary of current theoretical developments which extend beyond the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation.

Extending QCD perturbation theory to higher energies

On the basis of the results of a new renormalisation group improved small-x resummation scheme, we argue that the range of validity of perturbative calculations is considerably extended in rapidity with respect to leading log expectations. We thus provide predictions for the energy dependence of the gluon Green function in its perturbative domain and for the resummed splitting function. As in previous analyses, high-energy exponents are reduced to phenomenologically acceptable values. Additionally, interesting preasymptotic effects are observed. In particular, the splitting function shows a shallow dip in the moderate small-x region, followed by the expected power increase.
