Topological phase transition and phonon-space Dirac topology surfaces in ZrTe$_5$

We use first-principles methods to reveal that in ZrTe$_5$, a layered van der Waals material like graphite, atomic displacements corresponding to five of the six zone-center A$_g$ (symmetry-preserving) phonon modes can drive a topological phase transition from strong to weak topological insulator with a Dirac semimetal state emerging at the transition, giving rise to a Dirac topology surface in the multi-dimensional space formed by the A$_g$ phonon modes. This implies that the topological phase transition in ZrTe$_5$ can be realized with many different settings of external stimuli that are capable of penetrating through the phonon-space Dirac surface without breaking the crystallographic symmetry. Furthermore, we predict that domains with effective mass of opposite signs can be created by laser pumping and will host Weyl modes of opposite chirality propagating along the domain boundaries. Studying phonon-space topology surfaces provides a new route to understanding and utilizing the exotic physical properties of ZrTe$_5$ and related quantum materials.

Transport in Magnetically Doped One-Dimensional Wires: Can the Helical Protection Emerge without the Global Helicity?

We study the phase diagram and transport properties of arbitrarily doped quantum wires functionalized by magnetic adatoms. The appropriate theoretical model for these systems is a dense one-dimensional Kondo Lattice (KL) which consists of itinerant electrons interacting with localized quantum magnetic moments. We discover the novel phase of the locally helical metal where transport is protected from a destructive influence of material imperfections. Paradoxically, such a protection emerges without a need of the global helicity, which is inherent in all previously studied helical systems and requires breaking the spin-rotation symmetry. We explain the physics of this protection of the new type, find conditions, under which it emerges, and discuss possible experimental tests. Our results pave the way to the straightforward realization of the protected ballistic transport in quantum wires made of various materials.

Quantum liquid with strong orbital fluctuations: the case of a pyroxene family

We discuss quasi one-dimensional magnetic Mott insulators of the pyroxene family where spin and orbital degrees of freedom remain tightly bound. We analyze their excitation spectrum and outline the conditions under which the orbital degrees of freedom become liberated so that the excitations become dispersive and the spectral weight shifts to energies much smaller than the exchange integral.

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in Metals: A Diagrammatic Approach

We develop a formalism to study the Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) response in metals based on the diagrammatic expansion for its cross section. The standard approach to the solution of the RIXS problem relies on two key approximations: short-range potentials and non-interacting conduction electrons. However, these approximations are inaccurate for charged particles in metals, where the long-range Coulomb interaction and dynamic screening effects are very important. In this work we study how to extract important information about collective excitations in the Coulomb plasma, plasmons and electron-hole pairs, from RIXS data. We find that single- and multi-plasmon excitations can easily be distinguished by positions of the corresponding peaks, singularities, and their intensities. We also discuss the hybrid processes, where plasmon emission is accompanied by excitation of electron-hole pairs, and study how they manifest themselves.

Spinon Confinement and a Sharp Longitudinal Mode in Yb$_2$Pt$_2$Pb in Magnetic Fields

The fundamental excitations in an antiferromagnetic chain of spins-1/2 are spinons, de-confined fractional quasiparticles that when combined in pairs, form a triplet excitation continuum. In an Ising-like spin chain the continuum is gapped and the ground state is N{é}el ordered. Here, we report high resolution neutron scattering experiments, which reveal how a magnetic field closes this gap and drives the spin chains in \YPP\ to a critical, disordered Luttinger-liquid state. In \YPP\ the effective spins-1/2 describe the dynamics of large, Ising-like Yb magnetic moments, ensuring that the measured excitations are exclusively longitudinal, which we find to be well described by time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations. The inter-chain coupling leads to the confinement of spinons, a condensed matter analog of quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. Insensitive to transverse fluctuations, our measurements show how a gapless, dispersive longitudinal mode arises from confinement and evolves with magnetic order.

Tuning from failed superconductor to failed insulator with magnetic field

Do charge modulations compete with electron pairing in high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors? We investigated this question by suppressing superconductivity in a stripe-ordered cuprate compound at low temperature with high magnetic fields. With increasing field, loss of three-dimensional superconducting order is followed by reentrant two-dimensional superconductivity and then an ultra-quantum metal phase. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the latter state is bosonic and associated with the charge stripes. These results provide experimental support to the theoretical perspective that local segregation of doped holes and antiferromagnetic spin correlations underlies the electron-pairing mechanism in cuprates.

Superconductor-Metal Transition in Odd-Frequency Paired Superconductor in Magnetic Field

It is shown that the application of sufficiently strong magnetic field to the odd-frequency paired Pair Density Wave state described in Phys. Rev. B 94, 165114 (2016) leads to formation of a low temperature metallic state with zero Hall response. Applications of these ideas to the recent experiments on stripe-ordered La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4 are discussed.

Physics of Arbitrary Doped Kondo Lattices: from a Commensurate Insulator to a Heavy Luttinger Liquid and a Protected Helical Metal

We study one-dimensional Kondo Lattices (KL) which consist of itinerant electrons interacting with Kondo impurities (KI) - localized quantum magnetic moments. We focus on KL with isotropic exchange interaction between electrons and KI and with a high KI density. The latter determines the principal róle of the indirect interaction between KI for the low energy physics. Namely, the Kondo physics becomes suppressed and all properties are governed by spin ordering. We present a first-ever comprehensive analytical theory of such KL at an arbitrary doping and predict a variety of regimes with different electronic phases. They range from commensurate insulators (at filling factors 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4) to metals with strongly interacting conduction electrons (close to these three special cases) to an exotic phase of a helical metal. The helical metals can provide a unique platform for realization of an emergent protection of ballistic transport in quantum wires. We compare out theory with previously obtained numerical results and discuss possible experiments where the theory could be tested.

Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Behavior and Spinon Confinement in YbAlO$_3$

Low dimensional quantum magnets are interesting because of the emerging collective behavior arising from strong quantum fluctuations. The one-dimensional (1D) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a paradigmatic example, whose low-energy excitations, known as spinons, carry fractional spin S = 1/2. These fractional modes can be reconfined by the application of a staggered magnetic field. Even though considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of such magnets, experimental realizations of this low-dimensional physics are relatively rare. This is particularly true for rare-earth based magnets because of the large effective spin anisotropy induced by the combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and crystal field splitting. Here, we demonstrate that the rare-earth perovskite YbAlO$_3$ provides a realization of a quantum spin S = 1/2 chain material exhibiting both quantum critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior and spinon confinement-deconfinement transitions in different regions of magnetic field-temperature phase diagram.

Model of spin liquids with and without time-reversal symmetry

We study a model in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime that is realized by an array of chains, each of which realizes relativistic Majorana fields in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime, coupled via current-current interactions. The model is shown to have a lattice realization in an array of two-leg quantum spin-1/2 ladders. We study the model both in the presence and absence of time-reversal symmetry, within a mean-field approximation. We find regimes in coupling space where Abelian and non-Abelian spin liquid phases are stable. In the case when the Hamiltonian is time-reversal symmetric, we find regimes where gapped Abelian and non-Abelian chiral phases appear as a result of spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These gapped phases are separated by a discontinuous phase transition. More interestingly, we find a regime where a non-chiral gapless non-Abelian spin liquid is stable. The excitations in this regime are described by relativistic Majorana fields in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime, much as those appearing in the Kitaev honeycomb model, but here emerging in a model of coupled spin ladders that does not break SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry.

A Local Quantum Phase Transition in YFe$_{2}$Al$_{10}$

A phase transition occurs when correlated regions of a new phase grow to span the system and the fluctuations within the correlated regions become long-lived. Here we present neutron scattering measurements showing that this conventional picture must be replaced by a new paradigm in \boldmath$\mathrm{YFe}_2\mathrm{Al}_{10}$, a compound that forms naturally very close to a \boldmath$T=0$ quantum phase transition. Fully quantum mechanical fluctuations of localized moments are found to diverge at low energies and temperatures, however the fluctuating moments are entirely without spatial correlations. Zero temperature order in \boldmath$\mathrm{YFe}_2\mathrm{Al}_{10}$ is achieved by a new and entirely local type of quantum phase transition that may originate with the creation of the moments themselves.

Chiral Lattice Supersolid on Edges of Quantum Spin Hall Samples

We show that edges of Quantum Spin Hall topological insulators represent a natural platform for realization of exotic supersolid phase. On one hand, fermionic edge modes are helical due to the nontrivial topology of the bulk. On the other hand, a disorder at the edge or magnetic adatoms may produce a dense array of localized spins interacting with the helical electrons. The spin subsystem is magnetically frustrated since the indirect exchange favors formation of helical spin order and the direct one favors (anti)ferromagnetic ordering of the spins. At a moderately strong direct exchange, the competition between these spin interactions results in the spontaneous breaking of parity and in the Ising type order of the $z$-components at zero temperature. If the total spin is conserved the spin order does not pin a collective massless helical mode which supports the ideal transport. In this case, the phase transition converts the helical spin order to the order of a chiral lattice supersolid. This represents a radically new possibility for experimental studies of the elusive supersolidity.

Chiral Spin Order in Kondo-Heisenberg systems

We demonstrate that Kondo-Heisenberg systems, consisting of itinerant electrons and localized magnetic moments (Kondo impurities), can be used as a principally new platform to realize scalar chiral spin order. The underlying physics is governed by a competition of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kosuya-Yosida (RKKY) indirect exchange interaction between the local moments with the direct Heisenberg one. When the direct exchange is weak and RKKY dominates the isotropic system is in the disordered phase. A moderately large direct exchange leads to an Ising-type phase transition to the phase with chiral spin order. Our finding paves the way towards pioneering experimental realizations of the chiral spin liquid in low dimensional systems with spontaneously broken time reversal symmetry.

A model of chiral spin liquids with Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases

We present a two-dimensional lattice model for quantum spin-1/2 for which the low-energy limit is governed by four flavors of strongly interacting Majorana fermions. We study this low-energy effective theory using two alternative approaches. The first consists of a mean-field approximation. The second consists of a Random Phase approximation (RPA) for the single-particle Green's functions of the Majorana fermions built from their exact forms in a certain one-dimensional limit. The resulting phase diagram consists of two competing chiral phases, one with Abelian and the other with non-Abelian topological order, separated by a continuous phase transition. Remarkably, the Majorana fermions propagate in the two-dimensional bulk, as in the Kitaev model for a spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice. We identify the vison fields, which are mobile (they are static in the Kitaev model) domain walls propagating along only one of the two space directions.

The ladder physics in the Spin Fermion model

A link is established between the spin-fermion (SF) model of the cuprates and the approach based on the analogy between the physics of doped Mott insulators in two dimensions and the physics of fermionic ladders. This enables one to use nonperturbative results derived for fermionic ladders to move beyond the large-N approximation in the SF model. It is shown that the paramagnon exchange postulated in the SF model has exactly the right form to facilitate the emergence of the fully gapped d-Mott state in the region of the Brillouin zone at the hot spots of the Fermi surface. Hence the SF model provides an adequate description of the pseudogap.

Lattice spin models for non-Abelian Chiral Spin Liquids

We suggest a class of two-dimensional lattice spin Hamiltonians describing non-Abelian SU(2) chiral spin liquids - spin-analogues of fractional non-Abelian quantum Hall states- with gapped bulk and gapless chiral edge excitations described by the SU(2)$_n$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory. The models are constructed from an array of a generalized spin-$n/2$ ladders with multi-spin exchange interaction which are coupled by isolated spins. Such models allow a controllable analytic treatment starting from the one-dimensional limit and are characterized by a bulk gap and non-Abelian SU(2)$_n$ gapless edge excitations.

Multipoint Green's functions in 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theories

We calculate the multipoint Green functions in 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theories. We use the crossing formula for general models and calculate the 3 and 4 point functions taking in to account only the lower nontrivial intermediate states contributions. Then we apply the general results to the examples of the scaling $Z_{2}$ Ising model, sinh-Gordon model and $Z_{3}$ scaling Ising model. We demonstrate this calculations explicitly. The results can be applied to physical phenomena as for example to the Raman scattering.
