Topological Kondo effect in star junctions of Ising magnetic chains. Exact solution

In this paper I present a conjecture for the Bethe ansatz equations for the model describing a star junction of $M$ quantum critical Ising chains. For $M>3$ such model exhibits the so-called topological Kondo effect [B. Beri and N. R. Cooper, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 109}, 156803 (2012)] related to existence of Majorana zero energy modes at the junction. These modes are of a topological nature; they non-locally encode an SO(M) "spin" which is screened by the collective excitations of the chains. For certain values of $M$ the model is equivalent to the Kondo models with known exact solution. These cases are used to check the validity of the conjecture. It is demonstrated that the model behaves differently for $M$ even and odd; in the former case the model has a Fermi liquid and the latter case corresponds to a non-Fermi liquid infrared fixed point.

Ferromagnetic Exchange Anisotropy from Antiferromagnetic Superexchange in the Mixed 3d-5d Transition-Metal Compound Sr3CuIrO6

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the unusual ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional copper-iridium oxide Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$. Utilizing Ir $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we reveal a large gap magnetic excitation spectrum. We find that it is caused by an unusual exchange anisotropy generating mechanism, namely, strong ferromagnetic anisotropy arising from antiferromagnetic superexchange, driven by the alternating strong and weak spin-orbit coupling on the $5d$ Ir and 3d Cu magnetic ions, respectively. From symmetry consideration, this novel mechanism is generally present in systems with edge-sharing Cu$^{2+}$O$_4$ plaquettes and Ir$^{4+}$O$_6$ octahedra. Our results point to unusual magnetic behavior to be expected in mixed 3d-5d transition-metal compounds via exchange pathways that are absent in pure 3d or 5d compounds.

Local Structural Evidence for Strong Electronic Correlations in LiRh$_2$O$_4$ Spinel

The local structure of the spinel LiRh$_2$O$_4$ has been studied using atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of powder x-ray diffraction data. This measurement is sensitive to the presence of short Rh-Rh bonds that form due to dimerization of Rh$^{4+}$ ions on the pyrochlore sublattice, independent of the existence of long range order. We show that structural dimers exist in the low-temperature phase, as previously supposed, with a bond shortening of $Δr \sim 0.15$ Å. The dimers persist up to 350 K, well above the insulator-metal transition, with $Δr$ decreasing in magnitude on warming. Such behavior is inconsistent with the Fermi surface nesting-driven Peierls transition model. Instead, we argue that LiRh$_2$O$_4$ should properly be described as a strongly correlated system.

Symmetric and asymmetric excitations of a strong-leg quantum spin ladder

The zero-field excitation spectrum of the strong-leg spin ladder (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (DIMPY) is studied with a neutron time-of-flight technique. The spectrum is decomposed into its symmetric and asymmetric parts with respect to the rung momentum and compared with theoretical results obtained by the density matrix renormalization group method. Additionally, the calculated dynamical correlations are shown for a wide range of rung and leg coupling ratios in order to point out the evolution of arising excitations, as e.g. of the two-magnon bound state from the strong to the weak coupling limit.

An analytically tractable model of bad metals

We discuss a model Kondo-type Hamiltonian representing an analytically tractable version of the model used by Yin {\it et.al.}, Phys. Rev. B{\bf 86}, 2399 (2012) to explain the non-Fermi liquid behavior of iron chalcogenides and ruthenates in an intermediate energy range. We consider a regime where a complete screening of the local degrees of freedom proceeds in two stages described by two characteristic energy scales $T_K^{orb} >> E_0$. The first scale marks a screening of the orbital degrees of freedom and the second one marks a crossover to the regime with coherent propagation of quasiparticles. We present analytical results for the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility at $T << T_K^{orb}$.

Realization of 2-channel Kondo effect in a junction of three quantum Ising chains

It is shown that a junction of three quantum Ising chains ($Δ$-junction) can be described as the 2-channel Kondo model in a box which size is of the order of the Ising model correlation length with spin S=1/2 localized at the junction. The local spin is composed of the zero energy boundary Majorana modes of the Ising models.

A model description of the supersolid state in YBCO

I employ a semiphenomenological model introduced in A. M. Tsvelik, A. V. Chubukov, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 237001 (2007) to describe the state with co-existing superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) recently discovered in YBCO. The SC and the CDW order parameter fields are united in a single pseudospin and can be rotated into each other. It is suggested that disorder creates isolated pseudospins which become centers of inelastic scattering of electrons. It is suggested that this scattering is responsible for the logarithmic upturn in the resistivity $ρ(T) \sim - \ln T$ observed at low doping.

Parafermion excitations in superfluid of quasi-molecular chains

We study a quantum phase transition in a system of dipoles confined in a stack of $N$ identical one-dimensional lattices (tubes) polarized perpendicularly to the lattices. In this arrangement the intra-lattice interaction is purely repulsive preventing the system collapse and the inter-lattice one is attractive. The dipoles may represent polar molecules or indirect excitons. The transition separates two phases; in one of them superfluidity (understood as algebraic decay of the corresponding correlation functions) takes place in each individual lattice, in the other (chain superfluid) the order parameter is the product of bosonic operators from all lattices. We argue that in the presence of finite inter-lattice tunneling the transition belongs to the universality class of the $q=N$ two-dimensional classical Potts model. For $N=2,3,4$ the corresponding low energy field theory is the model of Z$_N$ parafermions perturbed by the thermal operator. Results of Monte Carlo simulations are consistent with these predictions. The detection scheme for the chain superfluid of indirect excitons is outlined.

Testing the validity of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit for octahedrally coordinated iridates in a model system Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$

The electronic structure of Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$, a model system for the 5d Ir ion in an octahedral environment, is studied through a combination of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and theoretical calculations. RIXS spectra at the Ir L$_3$-edge reveal an Ir $t_{2g}$ manifold that is split into three levels, in contrast to the expectations of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit. Effective Hamiltonian and $ab inito$ quantum chemistry calculations find a strikingly large non-cubic crystal field splitting comparable to the spin-orbit coupling, which results in a strong mixing of the $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=1/2$ and $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=3/2$ states and modifies the isotropic wavefunctions on which many theoretical models are based.

Universal Features of the Excitation Spectrum in Generalized Gibbs Distribution Ensemble

It is shown that excitation spectra of Generalized Gibbs Ensembles (GGE) of one-dimensional integrable models with isotopic symmetry contain universal features insensitive to details of the distribution. Namely, the low energy limit of the subsystem of isotopic (for instance, spin) excitations is described by the effective action of a ferromagnet at thermodynamic equilibrium with a single temperature and with the stiffness determined by the initial conditions. The condition of universality is that the entropy per excited particle is small.

β-YbAlB4: a critical nodal metal

We propose a model for the intrinsic quantum criticality of β-YbAlB4, in which a vortex in momentum space gives rise to a new type of Fermi surface singularity. The unquenched angular momentum of the |J = 7/2,m_J = \pm5/2> Yb 4f-states generates a momentum-space line defect in the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons, leading to a quasi-two dimensional Fermi surface with a k\perp4 dispersion and a singular density of states proportional to E^{-1/2}. We discuss the implications of this line-node in momentum space for our current understanding of quantum criticality and its interplay with topology.

Finite wave vector pairing in doped two-leg ladders

We consider the effects of Umklapp processes in doped two-leg fermionic ladders. These may emerge either at special band fillings or as a result of the presence of external periodic potentials. We show that such Umklapp processes can lead to profound changes of physical properties and in particular stabilize pair-density wave phases.

Riding a wild horse: Majorana fermions interacting with solitons of fast bosonic fields

I consider a class of one-dimensional models where Majorana fermions interact with bosonic fields. Contrary to a more familiar situation where bosonic degrees of freedom are phonons and as such form a slow subsystem, I consider fast bosons. Such situation exists when the bosonic modes appear as collective excitations of interacting electrons as, for instance, in superconductors or carbon nanotubes. It is shown that an entire new class of excitations emerge, namely bound states of solitons and Majorana fermions. The latter bound states are not topological and their existence and number depend on the interactions and the soliton's velocity. Intriguingly the number of bound states increases with the soliton's velocity.

Zero energy Majorana modes in superconducting wires

I consider a model of two thin superconducting wires interacting through Josephson tunneling and Coulomb interactions. It is shown that there is a parameter range where such a model may have two ground states with different types of quasi-long-range order: one is superconducting and the other is pair density wave. It is further shown that boundaries between these different phases support zero energy Majorana modes and that these modes are robust against disorder.

Zero energy Majorana modes in spin ladders and a possible realization of the Kitaev model

We show that in double-chain Mott insulators (ladders), disordered alternating ionic potentials may locally destroy coherence of magnetic excitations and lead to the appearance of spontaneously dimerized islands inside the Haldane spin-liquid phase. We argue that a boundary between the dimerized and Haldane phases of a spin-1/2 ladder supports a localized zero-energy Majorana fermion mode. Based on these findings we suggest a realization of a generalized Kitaev model where Majorana fermions can propagate in more than one dimension.

Polar Phase of 1D Bosons with Large Spin

Spinor ultracold gases in one dimension represent an interesting example of strongly correlated quantum fluids. They have a rich phase diagram and exhibit a variety of quantum phase transitions. We consider a one-dimensional spinor gas of bosons with a large spin $S$. A particular example is the gas of chromium atoms (S=3), where the dipolar collisions efficiently change the magnetization and make the system sensitive to the linear Zeeman effect. We argue that in one dimension the most interesting effects come from the pairing interaction. If this interaction is negative, it gives rise to a (quasi)condensate of singlet bosonic pairs with an algebraic order at zero temperature, and for $(2S+1)\gg 1$ the saddle point approximation leads to physically transparent results. Since in one dimension one needs a finite energy to destroy a pair, the spectrum of spin excitations has a gap. Hence, in the absence of magnetic field there is only one gapless mode corresponding to phase fluctuations of the pair quasicondensate. Once the magnetic field exceeds the gap another condensate emerges, namely the quasicondensate of unpaired bosons with spins aligned along the magnetic field. The spectrum then contains two gapless modes corresponding to the singlet-paired and spin-aligned unpaired bose-condensed particles, respectively. At T=0 the corresponding phase transition is of the commensurate-incommensurate type.

A Field Theory for Fermionic Ladder with Generic Intrachain Interactions

An effective low energy field theory is developed for a system of two chains. The main novelty of the approach is that it allows to treat generic intrachain repulsive interactions of arbitrary strength. The chains are coupled by a direct tunneling and four-fermion interactions. At low energies the individual chains are described as Luttinger liquids with an arbitrary ratio of spin $v_s$ and charge $v_c$ velocities. A judicious choice of the basis for the decoupled chains greatly simplifies the description and allows one to separate high and low energy degrees of freedom. In a direct analogy to the bulk cuprates the resulting effective field theory distinguishes between three qualitatively different regimes: (i) small doping ($v_c << v_s$), (ii) optimal doping ($v_s \approx v_c$) and (iii) large doping ($v_s << v_c$). I discuss the excitation spectrum and derive expressions for the electron spectral function which turns out to be highly incoherent. The degree of incoherence increases when one considers an array of ladders (stripe phase).
